ABSTRACT
The thermoelastic and thermomechanical properties of commercial Ni-Ti Alloys used in orthodontics are not always delivered by the manufacturer. Even more their physical, chemical and morphological properties are not always known. The purpose of the present study was to organize, in a systematic way, this type information in regard to orthodontic arcs to help orthodontists evaluate commonly used orthodontic nickel-titanium alloys. This information is based upon reproducible and proof data by analyzing certain thermomechanical properties of the materials under consideration. The physical-chemical and morphological properties are introduced to the orthodontist in a simple and pleasant way. We have used nine 0,016 arcs from different manufacturers All of the samples were examined using an INSTROM machine and a Scanning Electron Microspe (Hitachi S-2500). The results showed that the surface quality of the samples varies from those with a relatively smooth surface to those with a rough one. The amount and quality of marstensitic phase was also observed to vary from one sample to another. The tests done with the INSTRON indicated small variations of the mechanical properties (AU)
