ABSTRACT

Objective:

to reflect on questions related to the aging and the body, involving changes and significance for modern society.

Methodology:

this is a bibliographical research from publications indexed in the virtual health library in the period from August 2009 to June 2010. The corpus of this study was composed of twenty publications.

Result:

the transformations of the body are inherent to the aging, in wich they find inlaid referring questions to the welfare, to the health, pain, the illness and the process of aging. Through the relation “me-body-other-world”, lives it in significant way for itself, and desires the recognition of this value for the others. However, youth and vigor become central elements in a society that has the body as a way of expression and identity construction. The body of the old is “different” compared, disadvantaged, with the body model and young beauty in our society.

Conclusion:

to recognize the transformations of the body at the maturity means to include it into the register of the difference, it in a value place, keeping it in the circuit of the desire, without a denial of itself.
