ABSTRACT
Cryotherapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is effective in reducing the incidence of blindness in premature infants. However, there is a high incidence of retinal detachments and macular abnormalities associated with this treatment modality. A brief review of ROP is presented and two cases of retinal detachments following cryotherapy are discussed. When compared to argon laser photocoagulation and diode laser photocoagulation, cryotherapy may be associated with greater adverse effects and less favourable structural and functional success.(AU)
