RESUMO
As pessoas idosas representam uma percentagem crescente da população mundial. A medida que a população envelhece, cresce a demanda por profissionais da saúde que conheçamas particularidades do envelhecimento e do cuidado com as pessoas idosas. Não é diferente com a Odontologia e os cirurgiões-dentistas. Existem muitas alterações fisiológicas na boca e nostecidos maxilo-faciais que são relacionadas com o envelhecimento. Além disso, muitas doenças bucais e condições patológicas são frequentes entre os idosos. O objetivo deste artigo e fazer uma revisão dessas alterações fisiológicas e patológicas relacionadas com a saúde e as condições bucais dos idosos, de maneira a contribuir para a disseminação desta informação entre osprofissionais da Odontologia.
Older people represent growing percentage of the population around the world. As the population ages, the demand rises for health professionals that know the particularities of agingand of the care of aged people. It is not different for the dentists or dentistry itself. There are many physiological changes in mouth and inaxillofacial tissues that are related to the aging.Further, many oral diseases and pathological conditions are coinmon among these people. The objective of this paper is to review these physiological and pathological changes related to the oral health and conditions of elderly people in order to contribute to dissemination of this information among Dental Professionals.
