Resumen: Objetivo: Describir el consumo de grupos de alimentos recomendables y no recomendables para consumo cotidiano y su asociación con características sociodemográficas en población mexicana. Material y métodos: Información tomada de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición 2018-19, utilizando un cuestionario de frecuencia de consumo de alimentos. Se estimaron cuartiles de consumo de siete grupos de alimentos por grupo poblacional. Se analizó la asociación del consumo con tipo de localidad, región y terciles de condición de bienestar (ICB). Resultados: Pertenecer a localidades urbanas, región norte e ICB medio y alto se asoció con mayor posibilidad de estar en los cuartiles más altos de consumo de huevo y lácteos y carnes procesadas, mientras que la región sur se asoció con mayor consumo de leguminosas y bebidas endulzadas. Conclusión: En el sur de México se consume más frutas, pero menos leguminosas, huevo y lácteos, mientras que en localidades urbanas se consume más carnes procesadas, botanas, dulces y postres.


Abstract: Objective: To describe the consumption of recommended and non-recommended food groups for daily consumption, and their association with sociodemographic characteristics in Mexican population. Materials and methods: Information from the 2018-19 National Health and Nutrition Survey from Mexico, using a 7-day food consumption frequency questionnaire, in children and adults. We estimated consumption of seven food groups in quartiles by age group. We analyzed the association of locality of residence, region and tertil of well-being index (WBI). Results: Living in urban locality, north region, or medium or high WBI were associated with higher possibility of being in higher quartiles of egg and dairy, legumes, processed meat and snacks, candies and desserts consumption. Conclusions: In the southern Mexico more fruits are consumed, but less legumes, eggs and dairy products, while in urban locations more snacks, sweets and desserts are consumed.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de fatores demográficos e socioeconômicos, de doenças crônicas e do recebimento de orientações em saúde no padrão alimentar de idosos. O consumo alimentar foi avaliado por meio de questionário de frequência alimentar reduzido aplicado a 1.426 idosos residentes em Pelotas, RS, Brasil e os padrões alimentares foram obtidos por análise de componentes principais. Dois padrões foram identificados: saudável (alimentos integrais, frutas, legumes/verduras e leite) e ocidental (doces, frituras, alimentos congelados, embutidos e "fast food"). Mulheres, não fumantes e não dependentes alcoólicos aderiam mais ao padrão saudável, enquanto que homens, fumantes, dependentes alcóolicos e indivíduos com sobrepeso aderiam mais ao padrão ocidental. Maior renda e escolaridade estiveram associadas à maior adesão de ambos os padrões e a presença de doenças crônicas não esteve associada a nenhum padrão. O recebimento de orientações para hábitos saudáveis esteve associado à maior adesão ao padrão saudável e menor ao padrão ocidental. Há necessidade do fortalecimento de orientações eficazes sobre hábitos saudáveis nos serviços de saúde, com especial atenção para idosos do sexo masculino, tabagistas, dependentes alcoólicos e indivíduos com sobrepeso.


Abstract This cross-sectional study sought to assess the effect of demographic and socioeconomic factors, chronic diseases, and health counseling on dietary patterns of the elderly. Food consumption was assessed by means of a reduced eating frequency questionnaire distributed to 1,426 elderly residents in Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and dietary patterns were obtained using main component analysis. Two dietary patterns were identified: healthy diet (wholegrain food, fruits, vegetables, and milk) and Western diet (sweet snacks, fried foods, frozen foods, processed meats, and fast food). Females, non-smokers, and alcohol-free individuals tended more toward the healthy diet, whereas males, smokers, alcohol-dependent, and overweight individuals tended more toward the Western diet. Higher income and schooling were associated with a higher tendency toward both diets, and chronic diseases were not associated with either diet. Receiving counseling for adopting healthy habits was associated with a higher tendency toward a healthy diet and a lower tendency toward the Western diet. There is a need to increase effective guidance on healthy habits by health services to promote healthier eating practices, with special attention to elderly males, smokers, alcohol-dependent and overweight individuals.

Resumen: Objetivo: Caracterizar el perfil sociodemográfico que se asocia con las probabilidades de consumo de alimentos no básicos de alta densidad energética (ANBADE), gravados desde 2014. Material y métodos: Se utilizó la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición (Ensanut) 2012. Se identificó el grupo de ANBADE y se estimaron modelos probit sobre las probabilidades de consumo (PC) y de alto consumo después de ajustar por energía total (PAC), en función de características sociodemográficas. Resultados: Los escolares tienen 10.7 puntos porcentuales (pp) más PAC frente a los preescolares. Pertenecer a hogares con el mayor gasto o escolaridad del jefe se asocia con una PC 3.3 y 3.2 pp mayor en comparación con los hogares de menor gasto o escolaridad del jefe, respectivamente. Vivir en localidades metropolitanas se asocia con una PAC 5.2 pp mayor frente a localidades rurales. Conclusiones: El estudio identificó las condiciones sociodemográficas que se asocian con las mayores PC o PAC de ANBADE, que podrán considerarse en el diseño y evaluación de la política alimentaria.


Abstract: Objective: To characterize the sociodemographic profile associated with the probabilities of consumption of nonessential energy-dense foods (ANBADE), taxed since 2014. Materials and methods: We used the National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut) 2012. ANBADE group was identified and probit models were estimated for the probabilities of consumption (PC) and of belonging to the high quintile of consumption after adjusting for total energy intake (PAC), as a function of sociodemographic characteristics. Results: School-aged children have a PAC 10.7 percentage points (pp) higher vs. preschool-aged. Belonging to households with the highest expenditures or education of the head of the household are associated with a PC 3.3 or 3.2 pp higher vs. households with lower expenditures or education of the head, respectively. Living in metropolitan areas is associated with a PAC 5.2 pp higher vs. rural areas. Conclusions: The study identified the sociodemographic conditions associated with the largest PC or PAC of ANBADE, which may be considered in the design and evaluation of food policy.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that diet is very important in relation to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression, studies in this field are scarce and have focused only on some specific nutrients. We evaluated the energy, macronutrient and micronutrient intakes and dietary patterns of non-dialysis CKD participants in the PROGREDIR study. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study; CKD cohort, São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Baseline data on 454 participants in the PROGREDIR study were analyzed. Dietary intake was evaluated through a food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were derived through principal component analysis. Energy and protein intakes were compared with National Kidney Foundation recommendations. Linear regression analysis was performed between energy and nutrient intakes and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and between sociodemographic and clinical variables and dietary patterns. RESULTS: Median energy and protein intakes were 25.0 kcal/kg and 1.1 g/kg, respectively. In linear regression, protein intake (β = -3.67; P = 0.07) was related to eGFR. Three dietary patterns (snack, mixed and traditional) were retained. The snack pattern was directly associated with male gender (β = 0.27; P = 0.006) and inversely with diabetes (β = -0.23; P = 0.02). The traditional pattern was directly associated with male gender (β = 0.27; P = 0.007) and schooling (β = 0.40; P < 0.001) and inversely with age (β = -0.01; P = 0.001) and hypertension (β = -0.34; P = 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We identified low energy and high protein intake in this population. Protein intake was inversely related to eGFR. Dietary patterns were associated with age, gender, schooling level, hypertension and diabetes.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe the length of exposure to screens and the prevalence of consumption of meals and snacks by Brazilian adolescents in front of screens. METHODS We evaluated 74,589 12 to 17-year old adolescents from 1,247 schools in 124 Brazilian municipalities. A self-administered questionnaire was used. Its segment regarding nutrition contained questions about using TV, computers, and video game systems, having meals while watching TV, and consuming snacks in front of screens. Consumption of meals and snacks in front of screens was analyzed according to the following variables: geographical region, gender, age range, type of school (public or private), and school shift. The prevalences and their respective 95% confidence intervals were estimated under a complex sampling design. RESULTS A great deal of the adolescents (73.5%, 95%CI 72.3-74.7) reported spending two or more hours a day in front of screens. That habit was more frequent among male adolescents, private school students, morning shift students, and students from Brazil’s South region. More than half of the adolescents (56.6%, 95%CI 55.4-57.8) reported almost always or always having meals in front of TV, and 39.6% (95%CI 38.8-40.5) of them said they consumed snacks in front of screens exactly as often. Both situations were the most prevalent ones among the girls, who attended public schools and were from Brazil’s Midwest region. CONCLUSIONS Length of exposure to screens and consumption of meals and snacks almost always or always in front of screens are high among Brazilian adolescents. It is necessary to develop strategies aiming to reduce the length of screen use, considering the media reality that children and adolescents have been experiencing from earlier and earlier ages. That context must therefore be analyzed in an indissociable way.


RESUMO OBJETIVO Descrever o tempo de exposição às telas e a prevalência de consumo de refeições e petiscos em frente a telas em adolescentes brasileiros. MÉTODOS Foram avaliados 74.589 adolescentes de 12 a 17 anos de 1.247 escolas em 124 municípios brasileiros. Foi utilizado questionário autopreenchível, cujo bloco sobre alimentação continha perguntas sobre o uso de TV, computador e videogames, realização de refeições assistindo TV e consumo de petiscos em frente a telas. O consumo de refeições e petiscos em frente a telas foi analisado segundo as variáveis: região geográfica, sexo, faixa etária, tipo de escola (pública ou particular) e turno de estudo. Foram estimadas prevalências e respectivos intervalos de confiança de 95%, considerando-se o desenho de amostra complexa. RESULTADOS Grande parte dos adolescentes (73,5%, IC95% 72,3-74,7) referiu passar duas ou mais horas por dia em frente às telas. Esse hábito foi mais frequente entre os adolescentes do sexo masculino, de escola particular, do turno da manhã e da região Sul do País. Mais da metade dos adolescentes (56,6%, IC95% 55,4-57,8) relatou realizar as refeições quase sempre ou sempre em frente à TV, e 39,6% (IC95% 38,8-40,5) consumiam petiscos em frente às telas com essa mesma frequência. Ambas as situações foram mais prevalentes entre as meninas, que estudavam na rede pública de ensino e da região Centro-Oeste. CONCLUSÕES O tempo de exposição às telas e o consumo de refeições e petiscos quase sempre ou sempre em frente a telas é elevado entre os adolescentes brasileiros. Faz-se necessário desenvolver estratégias que visem à redução do tempo de uso de telas, considerando a realidade midiática que crianças e adolescentes têm vivenciado de forma cada vez mais precoce, devendo-se, portanto, trabalhar esse contexto de forma indissociável.

Four hundred ninety-five children between 0 and 17 years old provided information about their dietary intake in 966 24-hour dietary recall. Their nutritional status was established based on anthropometry using the growth patterns of WHO. Energy and macronutrients in 27 categories of dietary intake of snacks was determined. The aim was to establish the relationship between excess weight, snacking and consumption of energy derived from them. Based on models of linear regression and binomial where excess weight was the dependent variable and the explanatory power consumption, prevalence ratios (RP) and adjusted differences were calculated. Although energy from snack consumption increases with socioeconomic status, 751 (717, 786) kcal more in quintile 5 versus quintile 1, p <0.0001, the risk of excess in those taking snack is not statistically significant compared to those who did not consume, RP 1.05 (0.40 to 2.76). In conclusion, we established that consumption of snacks is not a determinant of overweight in Colombian children and that the main determinant of overweight and consumption of snacks is urban planning, social development, economic and level of wealth.


Cuatrocientos noventa y cinco niños entre 0 y 17 años aportaron información sobre su consumo dietario en 966 formatos de recordatorios de las últimas 24 horas. En todos se estableció su estado de nutrición con base en antropometría utilizando los patrones de crecimiento de la OMS. Se determinó el consumo de energía y macronutrientes en 27 categorías del consumo dietario de bocadillos con base en evidencia científica. El objetivo fue establecer la relación entre el exceso de peso, el consumo de bocadillos y el consumo de energía derivada de ellos. Con base en modelos de regresión lineal y binomial donde el exceso de peso era la variable dependiente y el consumo de energía la explicatoria, se calcularon Razones de Prevalencia (RP) y diferencias ajustadas. A pesar de que la energía derivada de consumo de bocadillos aumenta con el nivel socioeconómico, 751 (717, 786) kcal más en el quintil 5 versus el quintil 1, p<0,0001, el riesgo de exceso en aquellos que consumen bocadillos no es estadísticamente significativo con respecto a los que no consumen, RP 1,05 (0,40 a 2,76). En conclusión, establecimos que el consumo de bocadillos no es al parecer, determinante del exceso de peso en menores colombianos y que el principal determinante del exceso de peso y del consumo de bocadillos es el urbanismo, el desarrollo social, el económico y el nivel de riqueza.

El objetivo: de este estudio es evaluar la asociación entre el consumo de alimentos fuera del hogar: durante el trayecto de la casa a la escuela, en la escuela y de regreso, con el sobrepeso y la obesidad en una muestra nacional representativa de escolares mexicanos. Se evaluó el consumo de alimentos fuera de casa, en 9537 niños y niñas en edad escolar, obteniendo información de disponibilidad y consumo de grupos de alimentos y bebidas seleccionados. Asimismo se midieron peso, talla, consumo de energía total y variables sociodemográficas. Se construyeron modelos de regresión logística y se probaron interacciones con variables sociodemográficas. Los hallazgos principales muestran que la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad se asoció positivamente con el consumo de productos lácteos en niñas (RM:1.70; p=0.01), así como con el consumo de frituras en escolares residentes de la Cd. de México (RM: 1.68; p=0.06). El consumo de frutas y verduras en los niveles socioeconómicos medio y alto se asoció negativamente con la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad (RM: 0.54; p=0.01 y 0.59; p=0.07 respectivamente). Se concluye que los niños durante su estancia fuera del hogar: durante el trayecto de la casa a la escuela y de regreso, tienen una alta disponibilidad de alimentos densos en energía, lo que puede condicionar su consumo y contribuir a la aparición de sobrepeso y obesidad, por lo que resulta importante investigar esta asociación en estudios prospectivos.


The objective of our study was to evaluate the association between consumption of food during the journey from home to school and back, with overweight and obesity, in a nationwide representative sample of school children. We assessed consumption outside the home in 9537 children, with information on availability and consumption of selected groups of food and beverages. Height, weight, total energy consumption, and sociodemographic variables were also obtained. We developed logistic regression models, and tested interactions with sociodemographic variables. The results of our study show that the prevalence of overweight and obesity was positively associated with dairy consumption in girls (OR:1.70; p=0.01), as well as fried snacks consumption in school children living in Mexico City (OR:1.68; p=0.06). Consumption of fruits and vegetables in medium and high socioeconomic levels was negatively associated with the prevalence of overweight and obesity (OR:0.54; p=0.01 and 0.59; p=0.07, respectively). We concluded that children during their stay away from home have a high availability of energy dense foods, which can influence their consumption and contribute to the development of overweight and obesity, so it is important to investigate this association in prospective studies.
