RESUMO

Hummingbirds have evolved to hover and manoeuvre with exceptional flight control. This is enabled by their musculoskeletal system that successfully exploits the agile motion of flapping wings. Here, we synthesize existing empirical and modelling data to generate novel hypotheses for principles of hummingbird wing actuation. These may help guide future experimental work and provide insights into the evolution and robotic emulation of hummingbird flight. We develop a functional model of the hummingbird musculoskeletal system, which predicts instantaneous, three-dimensional torque produced by primary (pectoralis and supracoracoideus) and combined secondary muscles. The model also predicts primary muscle contractile behaviour, including stress, strain, elasticity and work. Results suggest that the primary muscles (i.e. the flight 'engine') function as diverse effectors, as they do not simply power the stroke, but also actively deviate and pitch the wing with comparable actuation torque. The results also suggest that the secondary muscles produce controlled-tightening effects by acting against primary muscles in deviation and pitching. The diverse effects of the pectoralis are associated with the evolution of a comparatively enormous bicipital crest on the humerus.

This review provides a comprehensive examination of GDM, focusing on diagnostic strategies and the associated maternal and offspring complications. We delve into the challenges and controversies surrounding GDM diagnosis, including the variability in diagnostic criteria, diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility issues, ethical considerations, and the influence of ethnicity and genetics. Maternal complications, such as preeclampsia, cesarean sections, long-term health implications, and neonatal complications like macrosomia, hypoglycemia, and respiratory distress syndrome, are explored in detail. Additionally, we investigate the long-term risks of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes in offspring and potential cognitive and developmental outcomes. This review underscores the critical importance of early detection and effective management of GDM, the need for standardized diagnostic criteria, personalized care plans, and the ongoing pursuit of research to enhance our understanding of this complex condition. GDM remains a dynamic field where ongoing innovation and research promise to improve the health outcomes of pregnant individuals and their children.

Skeletal muscle atrophy is a complex physiological process characterized by progressive muscle mass and strength loss. It is associated with various health conditions, including aging, disease, and certain diseases. Emerging research has indicated that oxidative stress plays a significant role in developing and progressing skeletal muscle atrophy. This review article explores the mechanisms by which oxidative stress influences skeletal muscle atrophy and its implications for potential therapeutic interventions. The review begins by providing an overview of skeletal muscle atrophy and the current understanding of its underlying mechanisms, highlighting the intricate balance between protein degradation and synthesis pathways. Subsequently, the concept of oxidative stress is introduced, discussing its sources and the intricate redox signaling pathways present in skeletal muscle cells. This review's main focus is exploring the multifaceted role of oxidative stress in skeletal muscle atrophy. The detrimental effects of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) production on cellular components, including proteins, lipids, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), are discussed. In addition, the impact of oxidative stress on key signaling pathways involved in muscle wasting, such as the ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy, is examined. Furthermore, the review highlights the implications of oxidative stress in modulating muscle regeneration and the importance of redox balance in maintaining muscle health. Monkeypox (Mpox), a rare zoonotic viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, has been gaining attention due to its potential for human-to-human transmission and its clinical resemblance to other poxvirus infections, such as smallpox and chickenpox. Enhancing nursing care for monkeypox patients is imperative to manage and contain its spread effectively. This review analyzes the key aspects of enhancing nursing care in monkeypox patients, focusing on differential diagnoses, prevention measures, and therapeutic interventions. Differential diagnosis is crucial in terms of the early recognition and management of monkeypox. Given its similarity to other poxvirus infections, a thorough assessment of clinical symptoms, travel history, and exposure to potential reservoir hosts is essential. Nursing professionals play a pivotal role in eliciting comprehensive patient histories and relaying this information to the medical team for accurate diagnosis. Prevention measures constitute a vital component of nursing care in monkeypox management. Implementing stringent infection prevention and control practices, including isolation protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and hand hygiene, is imperative to curbing nosocomial transmission. Nurses are at the forefront of enforcing these measures, educating patients, families, and healthcare staff about their significance, and ensuring strict adherence. Necroptosis is a regulated form of cell death that has gained increasing attention in recent years. It plays a significant role in various physiological and pathological processes, including renal health and disease. This review article provides an overview of necroptosis as a regulated cell death pathway and explores its implications in renal physiology and renal diseases. The molecular signaling pathways involved in necroptosis, including the key players such as receptor-interacting protein kinases (RIPKs) and mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL), are discussed in detail. The crosstalk between necroptosis and other cell death pathways, particularly apoptosis, is explored to understand the interplay between these processes in renal cells. In normal physiological conditions, necroptosis has been found to play a crucial role in renal development and tissue homeostasis. However, dysregulated necroptosis can contribute to tissue damage, inflammation, and fibrosis in renal diseases. The review highlights the involvement of necroptosis in acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and renal transplant rejection, elucidating the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and consequences. The therapeutic targeting of necroptosis in renal diseases is an emerging area of interest. Current and emerging strategies to modulate necroptosis, including the inhibition of key mediators and regulators, are discussed here. This comprehensive review aims to provide a thorough understanding of the impact of menopause on cardiovascular aging, with a specific focus on the influences of androgens. A literature search was conducted to gather relevant studies and clinical evidence exploring the relationship between menopause, androgens, and cardiovascular health. The review integrates findings from various studies to present a holistic view of the topic. The review outlines the changes in hormone levels during menopause and discusses the cardiovascular risk factors associated with this transition. Furthermore, it explores the impact of menopause on cardiovascular structure and function, elucidating the underlying mechanisms that contribute to cardiovascular aging. Androgens' significance in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis is discussed, followed by exploring the effects of androgen decline during menopause on lipid profiles, insulin sensitivity, vascular function, and other cardiovascular parameters. The review delves into the mechanisms of androgen action on the cardiovascular system, emphasizing the role of androgen receptors and the intricate interplay between androgens, estrogens, and other hormones. We report the very rare case of recurrent unilateral pleural effusion in a 53-year-old male. Computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left-sided paravertebral mass at D3 level. Multiple biopsy and CT scan lead us to the diagnosis of "Angiomatous Malformation." The lesion was excised surgically which on final histopathological report termed hemangioma.
