BACKGROUND: Barley (H. vulgare L.) is an important cereal crop cultivated across various climates globally. Barley and its ancestor (H. vulgare subsp. spontaneum) are an economically valuable model for genetic research and improvement. Drought, among various abiotic stresses, is a substantial threat to agriculture due to its unpredictable nature and significant impact on crop yield. RESULTS: This study was conducted in both greenhouse and laboratory settings. Prior to the study, wild barley accessions were pre-selected based on their sensitivity or tolerance to drought as determined from fieldwork in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 cropping seasons. The effects of three levels of drought stress were evaluated (control, 90-95% field capacity [FC]; mild stress, 50-55% FC; and severe stress, 25-30% FC). Several parameters were assessed, including seedling and root growth, enzymatic activity (CAT, SOD, POD), soluble protein levels, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, abaxial and adaxial stomatal density and dimensions, and relative gene expression of Dhn1, SOD, POD, and CAT. Drought stress significantly increased enzyme activities, especially at 25-30% FC, and more in the tolerant genotype. On the other hand, sensitive genotypes showed a notable increase in stomatal density. Under drought stress, there was a general decline in seedling and root growth, protein content, chlorophyll and carotenoids, and stomatal dimensions. Importantly, gene expression analysis revealed that Dhn1, SOD, POD, and CAT were upregulated under drought, with the highest expression levels observed in the drought-tolerant genotype under severe stress conditions (25-30% FC). CONCLUSIONS: Our investigation highlights the distinct morphological, physiological, biochemical, and gene-expression profiles of drought-resistant and drought-sensitive wild barley genotypes under varying degrees of drought.

PURPOSE: To reach a consensus among obstetrics and gynecology experts on the effects of micronutrient supplementation on fertility and pregnancy to aid clinicians in decision-making and create a unified approach to managing micronutrient deficiencies in women, by performing a modified Delphi study. METHODS: A three-round modified Delphi process was conducted among a Delphi panel of 38 Egyptian experts to define recommendations regarding the role of supplementation on fertility and pregnancy in women of reproductive age. A literature review was performed and supporting evidence was graded to help guide the recommendations based on available evidence. RESULTS: A total of 62 statements were developed for discussion and voting. Out of the 62 statements, 60 statements reached expert consensus. Statements were divided into two domains. The first domain discussed the role of supplementation in fertility: optimizing natural fertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI), unexplained infertility, and endometriosis, whereas the second domain was concerned with the role of supplementation in pregnancy during the prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal periods. CONCLUSION: In this work, a modified Delphi methodology was implemented to reach a consensus on the use of micronutrient supplementation in women of reproductive age. These recommendations can help clinicians in their practice, guide future research, and identify gaps in the market for the pharmaceutical industry. This clinical guidance can be extrapolated to similar communities.

PURPOSE: To compare the internal adaptation of restorative systems bonded to mid-coronal and gingival dentin using light-cured, chemical-cured, and dual-cured adhesives, both immediately and after aging. METHODS: 60 molars were selected and received occluso-mesial preparations with dentin gingival margins. Restorations were performed using different restorative systems with light-cured, chemical-cured, and dual-cured adhesives. Internal adaptation was assessed by examining the percentage of continuous margin (%CM) at the pulpal and gingival dentin under a scanning electron microscope at x200 magnification. Half of the teeth were stored in sterile water for 24 hours, while the other half underwent 10,000 thermal cycles. Micro-morphological analysis was conducted on representative samples at x1,000 magnification. RESULTS: The restorative system with light-cured adhesive exhibited significantly lower %CM values at the gingival dentin, particularly after aging. Aging had a negative impact on the %CM values of the pulpal and gingival dentin in restorative systems with light-cured and dual-cured adhesives. Regional dentin variations influenced the %CM values, especially after aging, regardless of the restorative system used. The tested restorative system with chemical-cured adhesive is preferable for achieving improved internal adaptation when bonding to both mid-coronal and gingival dentin, compared to the other tested systems. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The study highlights the variations in adhesive performance between different regional dentin areas using the tested restorative systems.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the clinical performance of bulk-fill resin composite systems with different viscosities in class II cavities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 class II restorations were performed with a single operator in 50 patients using four different bulk-fill resin composite materials: Filtek™ Bulk Fill, Heated Filtek™ Bulk Fill, G-ænial™ BULK Injectable, and SonicFill3. A double-blinded randomized clinical trial was designed to evaluate the two-year clinical performance of the four bulk-fill composite resins using modified FDI criteria. Data were analyzed descriptively. Level of significance was set at 0.05. Differences between groups were tested using Wilcoxon-signed-rank and Mann-Whitney-U test as nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Wilcoxon signed rank tests (p < 0.05). Eighty restorations were available for evaluation, with a survival function of 100%. No statistically significant differences were observed between the four groups regarding assessing esthetic, functional, and biological properties during different follow-up periods. CONCLUSIONS: After 2 years of clinical follow-up, the bulk-fill composite systems with different viscosities seem to be esthetically, functionally, and biologically acceptable, with a promising clinical performance in class II cavities.

A highly efficient low-cost adsorbent was prepared using raw and chemically modified cellulose isolated from sugarcane bagasse for decontamination of Cr(VI) from wastewater. First, cellulose pulp was isolated from sugarcane bagasse by subjecting it to acid hydrolysis, alkaline hydrolysis and bleaching with sodium chlorate (NaClO3). Then, the bleached cellulose pulp was chemically modified with acrylonitrile monomer in the presence Fenton's reagent (Fe+2/H2O2) to carry out grafting of acrylonitrile onto cellulose by atom transfer radical polymerization. The developed adsorbent (acrylonitrile grafted cellulose) was analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Both raw cellulose and acrylonitrile grafted cellulose were used for chromium removal from wastewater. The effects of metal ion concentration, pH, adsorbent dose and time were studied, and their values were optimized. The optimum conditions for the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto raw and chemically modified cellulose were: metal ion concentration: 50 ppm, adsorbent dose: 1 g, pH: 6, and time: 60 min. The maximum efficiencies of 73% and 94% and adsorption capacities of 125.95 mg/g and 267.93 mg/g were achieved for raw and acrylonitrile grafted cellulose, respectively. High removal efficiency was achieved, owing to high surface area of 79.92 m2/g and functional active binding cites on grafted cellulose. Isotherm and kinetics studies show that the experimental data were fully fitted by the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo first-order model. The adsorbent (acrylonitrile grafted cellulose) was regenerated using three different types of regenerating reagents and reused thirty times, and there was negligible decrease (19%) in removal efficiency after using it for 30 times. Hence, it is anticipated that acrylonitrile could be utilized as potential candidate material for commercial scale Cr(VI) removal from wastewater.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the microleakage of lithium disilicate veneers with finish lines placed cervically in different substrates (enamel, dentin, and resin composite) and bonded with light-cure (LC) and amine-free dual-cure (DC) resin cements. Material and Methods: Forty-eight human maxillary central incisors were randomly assigned into three groups according to finish line substrate (n=16/group). Each group was subdivided randomly into two subgroups (n=8/subgroup) according to resin cement type: LC resin cement (Variolink Esthetic LC, Ivoclar Vivadent) and DC resin cement (Variolink Esthetic DC, Ivoclar Vivadent). All the specimens received lithium disilicate veneers (IPS e.max Press, Ivoclar Vivadent). After 5000 cycles of thermocycling, the microleakage was measured using the dye penetrating technique. Data were analyzed statistically using Scheirer Ray Hare test, Kruskal-Wallis H-test, and Mann-Whitney U-test. The level of significance was set at p ≤ .05. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between different substrates in microleakage (p=.001), but there was no statistically significant difference between resin cements (p=.907), and there was no interaction between substrates and resin cements (p=.983). Microleakage was lesser when the finish line was placed at enamel and resin composite than at dentin. Similar leakage scores were observed with LC and DC resin cements. Conclusions: The finish line of ceramic veneer is suggested to be placed in enamel or good-quality resin composite restoration. Regarding microleakage and durability, LC and amine-free DC resin cements are suggested for ceramic veneer cementation. In the present work, an efficient isocratic HPLC method was developed for the precise and accurate estimation of vitamin D3 in tablet form. The chromatographic conditions comprised an L3 silica column (5 µm in particle size, 4.6 mm × 250 mm) with a mobile phase n-hexane/ethyl acetate (85:15 v/v) with a flow rate of 2.0 mL/min and a detection wavelength of 292 nm. The new methodology was validated for accuracy, precision, specificity, robustness, and quantification limits according to an official monograph of USP/BP and ICH guidelines. The peak areas of the six replicates of the homogeneous sample were recorded. The mean value obtained was 67,301, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 0.1741. The linearity and range were in the acceptable bounds, i.e., 0.999, which was calculated using regression line analysis. The results show that the method is truly acceptable as the RSD, as the flow rate was 0.81%, while for the mobile phase composition, it was 0.72%, which lies in the acceptable range. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) values were 0.0539 µg/mL and 0.1633 µg/mL, respectively. The % RSD of the intra and inter-day precision of the method was deemed acceptable according to the international commission for harmonization guidelines. The developed method has potential to be used for the detection and quantification of vitamin D3 during routine analysis for tablets in dosage form.

The application of herbicides in soil has been noted for its detrimental effect on the soil microbial community, crucial for various biochemical processes. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the impact of butisanstar and clopyralid herbicides, both individually and in combination at different dosage (recommended field dose (RFD), ½, 2 and 5-times RFD). The assessment focuses on soil basal respiration (SBR), cumulative microbial respiration (CMR), and the activities dehydrogenase (DH), catalase (CAT), urease, acid and alkaline phosphatases (Ac-P and Alk-P) enzymes, along with their variations on days 10, 30, 60, and 90 post-herbicide application. Results indicate that, although herbicides, even at lower doses of RFD, demonstrate inhibitory effects on DH, CAT, and microbial respiration, they paradoxically lead to a significant enhancement in urease and phosphatase activities, even at higher doses. The inhibitory/enhancing intensity varies based on herbicide type, incubation period, and dosage. Co-application of herbicides manifests synergistic effects compared to individual applications. The most notable inhibitory effects on DH, CAT, and SBR are observed on the 30th day, coinciding with the highest activities of urease and phosphatases on the same day. The persistent inability to restore respiration and enzyme activities to initial soil (control) levels emphasizes the lasting adverse and inhibitory effects of herbicides, especially clopyralid, over the long term. It becomes apparent that soil microorganisms require an extended duration to decompose and acclimate to the presence of herbicides. Consequently, these agrochemical compounds pose a potential risk to crucial biochemical processes, such as nutrient cycling, ultimately impacting crop production.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the elemental analysis and microhardness of a bioactive material (Activa) and marginal tooth structure after storage in different media. Materials and Methods: Fifteen teeth received cervical restorations with occlusal enamel and gingival dentin margins using the tested material bonded with a universal adhesive, 5 of them on the 4 axial surfaces and the other 10 on only the 2 proximal surfaces. The first 5 teeth were sectioned into 4 restorations each, then stored in 4 different media; deionized water, Dulbecco's phosphate buffered saline (DPBS), Tris buffer, and saliva. The storage period for deionized water was 24 hours while it was 3 months for the other media. Each part was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis for different substrates/distances and the wt% of calcium, phosphorus, silica, and fluoride were calculated. The other 10 teeth were sectioned across the restoration, stored in either Tris buffer or saliva for 24 hours or 3 months, and were evaluated for microhardness of different substrates/areas. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test. Results: Enamel and dentin interfaces in the DPBS group exhibited a significant increase in calcium and phosphorus wt%. Both silica and fluoride significantly increased in tooth structure up to a distance of 75 µm in the 3-month-media groups than the immediate group. Storage media did not affect the microhardness values. Conclusions: SEM-EDS analysis suggests an ion movement between Activa and tooth structure through a universal adhesive while stored in DPBS.

Background Breastfeeding is recognized as a crucial determinant of child health and development, yet its multifaceted effects remain underexplored in many contexts. This cross-sectional study investigates the association between breastfeeding practices and various health and developmental outcomes in infants and young children, focusing on exclusive breastfeeding, partial breastfeeding, and formula feeding. Done at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Pakistan, the research aims to provide comprehensive insights into the nuanced impacts of breastfeeding on child well-being. Objectives This study aims to assess the association between breastfeeding duration and practices with the incidence of infectious diseases in infants and young children. It investigates the relationship between different breastfeeding practices: exclusive breastfeeding, partial breastfeeding, and formula feeding and cognitive development outcomes in early childhood. Additionally, the study evaluates the role of breastfeeding in the development of motor skills in infants and young children. Methodology A cohort of 390 participants, aged one month to three years, participated in the study. Data collection encompassed parental interviews, clinical assessments using standardized tools such as the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, and reviews of medical records. Statistical analyses, including frequency analysis and chi-square tests, were conducted to elucidate the relationships between breastfeeding practices and health outcomes. Results Exclusive breastfeeding exhibited a significantly lower incidence of infectious diseases compared to partial breastfeeding and formula feeding. Specifically, among exclusively breastfed children, incidences of colds, pneumonia, and diarrhea were 32%, 39.7%, and 40%, respectively. These rates were notably higher in partially breastfed and formula-fed children. Cognitive development outcomes also varied significantly across feeding groups. Exclusively breastfed children demonstrated superior cognitive performance, with 34.2% rated above average, compared to only 6.5% in the formula-fed group. Additionally, the prevalence of developmental delays was lowest among exclusively breastfed children (14.1%), contrasting with 62.8% in the partial breastfeeding group and 77.0% in the formula-feeding group. Conclusions The study underscores the pivotal role of exclusive breastfeeding in promoting optimal child health and development. Exclusive breastfeeding is associated with significantly reduced incidences of infectious diseases, superior cognitive development outcomes, and a lower prevalence of developmental delays. These findings highlight the importance of supportive interventions and policies aimed at encouraging exclusive breastfeeding practices, ultimately enhancing child well-being and developmental trajectories.

Fungi generate different metabolites some of which are intrinsically bioactive and could therefore serve as templates for drug development. In the current study, six endophytic fungi namely Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus tubigenesis, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium oxalicum, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus brasiliensis were isolated and identified from the medicinal plant, Silybum marianum. These endophytic fungi were identified through intra transcribed sequence (ITS) gene sequencing. The bioactive potentials of fungal extracts were investigated using several bioassays such as antibacterial activity by well-diffusion, MIC, MBC, anti-biofilm, antioxidant, and haemolysis. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 was used to determine the antibiofilm activity. The ethyl acetate extract of Aspergillus flavus showed strong to moderate efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa, and Bacillus spizizenii. Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus brasiliensis exhibited significant antibiofilm activity with IC50 at 4.02 and 3.63 mg/ml, while A. flavus exhibited maximum antioxidant activity of 50.8%. Based on HPLC, LC-MS, and NMR experiments kojic acid (1) and carbamic acid (methylene-4, 1-phenylene) bis-dimethyl ester (2) were identified from A. flavus. Kojic acid exhibited DPPH free radical scavenging activity with an IC50 value of 99.3 µg/ml and moderate activity against ovarian teratocarcinoma (CH1), colon carcinoma (SW480), and non-small cell lung cancer (A549) cell lines. These findings suggest that endophytic fungi are able to produce promising bioactive compounds which deserve further investigation.

Objective: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a significant contributor to chronic liver disease worldwide. Orlistat blocks intestinal fat absorption, leading to decreased liver fat content. Therefore, it is a viable option for NAFLD management. Methods: We performed a systematic review and metaanalysis using randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We used mean difference (MD) to pool continuous outcomes presented with the corresponding confidence interval (CI). Results: We included four RCTs with a total of 379 patients. Orlistat was effective in reducing liver fat content (MD: -5.02, 95% CI [-7.23, -2.82], P = 0.00001), alanine transferase (MD: -10.03, 95% CI [-17.80, -2.26], P = 0.01), aspartate transferase (MD: -4.29, 95% CI [-7.59, -0.99], P = 0.01), waist circumference (MD: -3.18, 95% CI [-4.25, -2.10], P = 0.00001), body mass index (MD: -1.03, 95% CI [-1.34, -0.73], P = 0.00001), total cholesterol (MD: -3.75, 95% CI [-4.02, -3.49], P = 0.00001), and low-density lipoprotein (MD: -3.83, 95% CI [-4.05, -3.61], P = 0.00001). However, orlistat was associated with increased serum triglycerides (MD: 7.46, 95% CI [6.48, 8.44], P = 0. 00001). Conclusion: Orlistat is a viable option for NAFLD management; however, it increases triglyceride levels. Larger RCTs are required.

Abstract Objective Sickle cell disease is characterized by clinical complications resulting in vaso-occlusive crisis with prominent attributes of oxidative stress, inflammation, and pain. Inflammation is an integral part of this disease which further exacerbates the pain during a crisis. Omega-3 fatty acids are known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-aggregatory properties and assist in diminishing the slow physiological inactivation. Methods A pilot nutritional interventional study was conducted wherein forty-three children with sickle cell disease aged 5-16 years were supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids for a period of six months. Analysis of oxidative stress, as well as inflammatory parameters, was done pre and post-supplementation. Results Increased free oxygen radical transference values depicting free radical generation is enhanced in these patients along with a reduced antioxidant defense, as seen by decreased free oxygen radical defense values. Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids for a period of six months significantly reduced the inflammatory marker homocysteine in all patients, whereas high sensitive C reactive protein was significantly reduced only in females of the age group 11-16years. Simultaneously a significant reduction in oxidative stress parameters with a concomitant increase of antioxidant defense was observed in all patients. Conclusion The authors' findings suggest the regulatory effects of omega-3 fatty acids as cellular activators in alleviating the complications due to sickle cell disease. Omega-3 fatty acids hold promise as future therapeutic candidates in patients with sickle cell disease.

Weeds are a serious obstacle to the production of chickpea. Imazethapyr (IM) herbicide is used to controlweeds in most of the pulses, including chickpea. Mitotic abnormalities, chromosomal behavior, and proteincontent in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), due to IM treatment, were studied. The chickpea seeds (varietyJG-11) were germinated in sterilized Petri dishes, 9 cm in diameter, on Whatman filter paper moistened with10 ml of either Hoagland nutrient solution (control) or five concentrations of IM (0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 ppm).From the cytologic point of view, observations demonstrated that the mitotic frequency in root meristematiccells diminished, and that abnormality frequency increased parallel to the increase in concentrations of IM.The herbicide was highly mito-inhibitory and induced chromosomal irregularities, such as stickiness, lagging,scattering, and chromosome bridges. The endosperm and root-shoot axis’ protein content decreased withincreasing of the herbicide concentration in all the treatments. It can be argued that IM produces undesirableside effects during mitosis in chickpea’s somatic cells and biochemical parameters

Background: Classrooms are an important environment for young children as this is where they spend a large part of their time. Aims: This study was designed to quantify the levels of heavy metals in classroom dusts in Shiraz, a city southwestern Iran. The potential association between heavy metal levels and childhood asthma was also investigated.Methods: We selected 32 schools for collecting classroom dust samples during September–November 2016. The con-centration of 10 heavy metals was measured in these dust samples by optical emission spectrometry. The diagnosis of childhood asthma was made using both the medical chart of each student and examination by an allergist. The data were analysed using SPSS, version 21.0.Results: The concentration of heavy metals in classroom dust samples ranged from 7559 to 53 723.0 mg/kg (mean: 16 945.5 mg/kg) for Fe, 169.0 to 952.0 mg/kg (mean 288.9 mg/kg) for Mn, and 9.0 to 971.0 mg/kg (mean 258.8 mg/kg) for Pb. We found no correlation between heavy metals in classroom dust and childhood asthma.Conclusion: In comparison with studies reported elsewhere, the maximum levels of lead in our study were greater. A potential explanation for the lack of correlation with childhood asthma is the large mass of the particles, preventing them from reaching the lower airways. Nevertheless, special attention should be paid to reducing high levels of heavy metals in classroom dust in this area.


Contexte : Les salles de classe constituent un environnement important pour les jeunes enfants, étant donné qu’ils passent une grande partie de leur temps dans ce lieu. Objectifs : La présente étude a été réalisée pour quantifier les niveaux de métaux lourds présents dans les poussières de salle de classe à Shiraz, ville du sud-ouest de la République islamique d’Iran. Le lien potentiel entre les concentrations de métaux lourds et l’asthme infantile a également été examiné. Méthodes : Nous avons sélectionné 32 écoles pour y prélever des échantillons de poussière dans les classes entre septembre et novembre 2016. La concentration en dix métaux lourds dans ces échantillons a été mesurée par spectrométrie d’émission optique. Le diagnostic d’asthme infantile a été posé à la fois sur la base du dossier médical de chaque élève et d’un examen réalisé par un allergologue. Les données ont été analysées à l’aide du logiciel SPSS, version 21.0. Résultats : La concentration en métaux lourds dans les échantillons de poussière des salles de classe variait de 7 559 à 53 723,0 mg/kg (moyenne : 16 945,5 mg/kg) pour Fe, de 169,0 à 952,0 mg/kg (moyenne : 288,9 mg/kg) pour Mn et de 9,0 à 971,0 mg/kg (moyenne : 258,8 mg/kg) pour Pb. Nous n’avons établi aucune corrélation entre les métaux lourds présents dans la poussière des salles de classe et l’asthme infantile. Conclusion : Comparativement aux études menées ailleurs, les niveaux maximaux de plomb étaient supérieurs dans notre étude. L’absence de corrélation avec l’asthme infantile pourrait s’expliquer par la masse élevée des particules, qui pourrait les empêcher d’atteindre les voies respiratoires basses. Néanmoins, une attention particulière doit être portée à la réduction des hauts niveaux de métaux lourds présents dans les salles de classe de cette région.

To study the effects of some new facilitators on the vegetative and morphological traits of Thymus kotschyanus, nine treatments were tested in the experimental rangeland field at the University of Mohaghegh Ardabili, Ardabil, Iran. Treatments included control, potassium silicate nanoparticles (PSN) with two levels of 500 and 1000 mg/lit, superabsorbent hydrogel (SH) with two levels of 10 and 30 g/kg, animal manure (AM) with two levels of 100, 200 g/kg, and effective microorganisms (EM) with two levels of 1 and 2%. Data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results of mean comparisons of treatments for Thymus kotschyanus characteristics showed that the highest amount of studied traits were observed in the treated SH 30 g/kg. These traits include plant height (19.44 cm), basal area (4.66 cm), canopy cover (99.11%), number of secondary branches (9.44) and depth of rooting (16.49 cm), aerial parts volume (26.77 cm3), root volume (17.66 cm3), aerial parts fresh weight (14.40 g), aerial parts dry weight (7.18 g), root fresh weight (3.98 g), and root dry weight (2.07 g). In general, the impact of treatments on Thymus growth traits were ranked as follows: SH 30 g/kg, PSN 1000 mg/lit, AM 200 g/kg, SH 10 g/kg, PSN 500 mg/lit, AM 100 g/kg, EM 2%, and EM 1%. In addition,the lowest plant traits were found in control. Overall, it is recommended extending the cultivation of this native medicinal plant by considering ecological conditions in each region. In addition, to promote the establishment and facilitate the growth of planted species, it is recommended using the facilitators utilized in the present work.


Para estudar os efeitos de alguns novos facilitadores sobre as características vegetativas e morfológicas de Thymus kotschyanus L., nove tratamentos foram testados no campo experimental de pastagens na Universidade de Mohaghegh Ardabili, Ardabil, Irã. Os tratamentos incluíram controle, nanopartículas de silicato de potássio (PSN) com dois níveis de 500 e 1000 mg/L, hidrogel superabsorvente (SH) com dois níveis de 10 e 30 g/kg, esterco animal (AM) com dois níveis de 100 e 200 g/kg e microorganismos efetivos (EM) com dois níveis de 1 e 2%. Os dados foram submetidos a uma análise de variância unidirecional (ANOVA). Os resultados das comparações médias dos tratamentos para as características de Thymus kotschyanus L. mostraram que a maior quantidade das características estudadas foi observada no tratamento com SH 30 g/kg. Essas características incluem altura de plantas (19,44 cm), área basal (4,66 cm), cobertura de dossel (99,11%), número de ramos secundários (9,44) e profundidade de enraizamento (16,49 cm), volume de partes aéreas (26,77 cm3), volume de raiz (17,66 cm3), peso fresco de partes aéreas (14,40 g), peso seco de partes aéreas (7,18 g), peso fresco de raiz (3,98 g) e peso seco de raiz (2,07 g). Em geral, o impacto dos tratamentos nas características de crescimento de Thymus foi classificado da seguinte forma: SH 30 g/kg, PSN 1000 mg/L, AM 200 g/kg, SH 10 g/kg, PSN 500 mg/L, AM 100 g/kg, EM 2% e EM 1%. Além disso, as características mais baixas da planta foram encontradas no controle. Em geral, recomenda-se estender o cultivo desta plantamedicinal nativa considerando as condições ecológicas em cada região. Além disso, para promover o estabelecimento e facilitar o crescimento de espécies plantadas, recomenda-se utilizar os facilitadores utilizados no presente trabalho.

Aims: To investigate the interrelationship between morphological traits and several phytophenol compounds as important essential oils in 23 fenugreek (Trigonella spp) accessions. Study Design: The experimental design was a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) replicated in two growing seasons. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Natural Resources, Fars Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center, Shiraz, Iran in the years 2015 and 2016. Methodology: Several agronomic and morphological traits were measured in the field. Leaf tissue samples were used to extract phytophenol compositions by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Results: The results of analysis of variance revealed that the year × accession interaction was not significant for phytophenol compounds whereas morphological traits were affected by this variance component. Great variations were found for phytophenols. Simple correlation analysis revealed that except quercetin most of phytophenols were not associated with morphological traits but multivariate statistical analysis techniques demonstrated association of these two sets of variables. Trans-ferulic acid, p-Coumaric acid, rutin and hesperidin were the most important phytophenol compounds associated with shoot fresh weight. Several phytophenols had direct and positive relation with shoot fresh weight whereas several others decreased as shoot fresh weight were increased. Quercetin was significantly associated with most of morphological attributes. Conclusion: The outcome of this study provides more options to breeders in terms of several unresolved issues in fenugreek with respect to phytophenol compositions and their associations with important morphological traits.

The study is associated with the effect of aspirin (Acetyl Salicylic Acid) on the microhardness of mineralized tissues of the offspring's teeth, in response to the ingestion of the drug during pregnancy. Aspirin is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic medicine, for symptomatic treatment. Misuse of this drug during pregnancy may instigate developmental defects in offspring. An experimental control study was designed, in which female rabbits were taken as representative mammalian models and treated with aspirin during pregnancy. Their offspring's teeth were used to assess the microhardness of dental tissues. The rabbits were alienated into two groups, treated and control, consisting of seven rabbits in each set (n= 7). Microhardness was evaluated in three types of the sample teeth. The total number of teeth examined were, 2x7x12= 168 samples. Vicker's Hardness degree values were measured and recorded vis-à-vis (50 g for 15 s with 3 indentations per specimen on enamel and dentine separately). The range of hardness obtained was statistically analyzed and the Student's t-tests was applied, with the aid of SPSS version 20. The P-values for both enamel and dentine from maxillary incisors and molars were less than 0.05. The same trend was observed in the mandibular teeth. However, a teratogenicity of Acetyl Salicylic Acid was pragmatic in the recent in vivo studies. Based on the analysis, it was evident that the aspirin administration could produce negative effects leading to reduction in the microhardness of dental tissues of the offsprings.


El estudio asocia el efecto de la aspirina (ácido acetil salicílico) sobre la microdureza de los tejidos mineralizados de los dientes de crías, en respuesta a la ingesta del fármaco durante la preñez. La aspirina es un analgésico y antipirético ampliamente utilizado para el tratamiento sintomático. El mal uso de esta droga durante la preñez puede inducir defectos en el desarrollo de las crías. Se diseñó un estudio experimental de control, en el que se tomaron conejas como modelos de mamíferos representativos y fueron tratados con aspirina durante la preñez. Los dientes de sus crías fueron utilizados para evaluar la microdureza de los tejidos dentales. Los animales fueron distribuidos en dos grupos, tratados y control, con siete animales en cada grupo (n= 7). La microdureza se evaluó en tres tipos de dientes de la muestra. El número total de dientes examinados fueron 168 (2x7x12). Se midieron y registraron valores del grado de dureza Vickers vis-à-vis (50 g por 15 s con 3 indentaciones por especimen sobre el esmalte y la dentina por separado). Se analizó estadísticamente la gama de dureza obtenida y se aplicaron pruebas t de Student con la ayuda del programa SPSS versión 20. Los valores de p para el esmalte y la dentina de los incisivos maxilares y molares fueron menores a 0,05. Se observó la misma tendencia en los dientes mandibulares. Sin embargo, teratogenicidad producto del ácido acetil salicílico se encontró en recientes estudios in vivo. De acuerdo al análisis de los resultados, se evidenció que la administración de aspirina provocó efectos negativos que determinaron la reducción de la microdureza de los tejidos dentales de las crías.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to determine the prevalence of maxillary canine impaction on a basis of a single panoramic radiograph in Bangladeshi population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A random sample of seven hundred panoramic radiographs was collected from the patient record of a dental clinic. All the selected panoramic radiographs were taken from January 2009 to August 2010 by a single panoramic radiograph machine with the same exposure time (19 seconds) for all radiographs. One hundred and twenty panoramic radiographs were excluded to minimize the selection bias. In a dim lit room, an observer assessed the radiographs on a standard radiographic light box. The position of the impacted maxillary canine was recorded in line with the longitudinal axis of a tooth using the edge of a metal ruler. Data were subsequently put on SPSS 11.5 software and chi-square (chi2) tests were applied to find out the association. RESULTS: Among 580 panoramic radiographs it was found that impacted maxillary canines were present in only 7 (1.2%) radiographs. A statistical significant difference was found between the age of the patients and the vertical position of the impacted canines (p=0.000) and between the age of the patients and the horizontal position of the impacted canines (p=0.003). CONCLUSION: The prevalence was found to be low compared with the present study from the limitation of panoramic image. Further study needs to include three-dimensional imaging modality.
