RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the plasma protein profile of patients with primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS) compared to healthy controls and identify proteins that might be used in the evaluation, diagnosis, and prognosis of this condition. The sample consisted of 14 patients with PAPS and 17 sex- and age-matched controls. Plasma samples were submitted to proteomic analysis (albumin and immunoglobulin G depletion, concentration, digestion, and label-free data-independent mass spectrometry). The software ExpressionE was used to quantify intergroup differences in protein expression. The analysis yielded 65 plasma proteins of which 11 were differentially expressed (9 upregulated and 2 downregulated) in relation to controls. Four of these are known to play a role in pathophysiological mechanisms of thrombosis: fibrinogen α chain, fibrinogen α chain, apolipoprotein C-III, and α-1-glycoprotein-1. Our analysis revealed autoimmune response and the presence of proteins believed to be functionally involved in the induction of procoagulant activity in patients with PAPS. Further studies are necessary to confirm our findings and may eventually lead to the development of significantly more accurate diagnostic tools.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the level of knowledge about HPV vaccine among adolescents in government and private schools in Aracaju, Sergipe State. Determining their social and demographic profile and sexual behavior, with a comparative analysis of both groups.METHODS: Cross-sectional prospective study in which a questionnaire was completed by 810 adolescents between 10 and 19 years old in government and private schools, conducted from January to December 2012. Respondents aged 18 years old or more and the parents or guardians of underage participants signed consent forms. This survey was approved by the Ethics Committee at the Sergipe Federal University. Frequency distribution and association tests (Fisher's exact test) tables were drawn up for the statistical analysis.RESULTS: The mean age in private schools was 15.6 years old, with 56.74% stating that they knew about the vaccine, and 3.47% taken all three doses. In government schools, the average age was 16.2 years; 40.16% of the respondents had already heard about the vaccine, although no-one from this group had been vaccinated. In private schools, there was a significant association between the following variables: knowledge about HPV vaccine and contraceptive use (p = 0.289); living with parents (p = 0.000); Pap smear (p = 0.022); and knowledge about HPV (p = 0.000). In government schools, there was a significant association for only knowledge about HPV.CONCLUSION: Knowledge about HPV vaccine was similar in both groups. Most the adolescents stated that they knew about HPV, and this knowledge was significantly associated with knowledge of the vaccine(AU)
