RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the efficacy of single-channel percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) and conventional open surgery in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods: This is a retrospective study. A total of 66 patients with LDH admitted to Tianjin Medical University from June 2017 to June 2018 were divided into two groups: the observation group (single-channel PELD) and the control group (posterior lumbar interbody fusion), with 33 cases in each group. The two groups were compared in terms of visual analogue scale(VAS), oswestry disability index (ODI), Japanese Orthopaedic Association Score(JOA), perioperative indicators, clinical efficacy, postoperative complications, changes in inflammatory factors and serum T lymphocyte subsets. Results: The operation time, incision length, intraoperative blood loss, time in bed, hospital stay in the observation group were all lower than those in the control group. At 7d after treatment, the improvement of ODI, VAS and JOA in the observation group were better than that in the control group. At the last follow-up, there was no significant difference in Cobb angle and lumbar lordosis angle between the two groups. The levels of serum IL-1, IL-6 and TNF-α in the observation group were lower than those in the control group. The degree of reduction of serum CD3+ and CD4+ in the observation group were higher than those in the control group. And the level of elevation of CD8+ in the observation group was lower than that in the control group. Moreover, there was no significant difference in CD4+/CD8+ level between the two groups. The excellent rate of surgical results in the observation group was higher than that in the control group. Complications occurred in both groups, with no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: Single-channel PELD can achieve superior clinical efficacy over conventional open surgery in the treatment of LDH.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Infection is a significant risk factor that impacts for perioperative morbidity and mortality in liver transplantation (LTx) patients and is difficult to evaluate quantitatively in the early posttransplantation period. Thus, a biomarker to assess the risk of infection and the prognosis of the recipient is highly desirable. METHODS: A total of 128 consecutive patients with end-stage liver diseases undergoing LTx between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, were screened retrospectively. Graft preservation fluid and blood samples were collected for culture, and other perioperative laboratory examination results were recorded, for assessment of infection status. RESULTS: After a follow-up period of 30 days, the survival rate among the 128 LTx recipients was 94.5%. Multivariable regression analysis showed that the logarithmically transformed neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (HR = 3.548, 95% CI: ; p = .041) on post-LTx day 1 and graft preservation fluid culture positivity (HR = 12.032, 95% CI: ; p = .006) were independent predictive factors for early prognosis after LTx. CONCLUSIONS: Positive graft preservation fluid culture and the logarithmically transformed NLR on post-LTx day 1 were independent predictive factors for early prognosis after LTx. The logarithmically transformed NLR could provide an earlier indication than culture results in clinical practice.

RESUMO

All vertebrate cells generally self-regulate for sustaining homeostasis and cell functions. As a major regulatory mechanism, regulatory volume decrease (RVD) occurs in hypotonicity-induced cell swelling, and then shrinking by the efflux of intracellular osmolytes and water, in which the ions K+, Cl-, and Ca2+ play a key role in the RVD process. We observed that these pivotal ions could result in novel RVD behaviors under repeatedly hypotonic stimulation. However, there is a lack of valid means for assessing the effect of pivotal ions on RVD. In this work, we proposed an effective measurement process based on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) combined with cell function of RVD for revealing acute variations in cell volume regulation induced by the pivotal ions. A QCM sensor was implemented by adhering MCF-7 cells to a poly-l-lysine-modified gold chip and cyclic stimulation with hypotonic NaCl medium, in which a frequency shift (Δf) showed the superior feasibility of the technique in exhibiting RVD behaviors. With the increase in the number of cycles, the RVD values decreased progressively under three stimulation cycles with hypotonic NaCl alone. Compared with the first cycle, the RVD level in the second and third cycles declined by 60.7±1.7% and 82.1±1.6% (n=3), respectively; conversely, it recovered in NaCl-KCl solution, but was significantly enhanced by 52.2±0.8% in NaCl-CaCl2 solution. Moreover, the inhibition of chloride channels to block Cl- efflux also decreased the RVD level by 56.2±3.0%. The results indicate that these ions (K+, Cl-, Ca2+) are all able to affect the function of RVD, among which intracellular Cl- depletion reduced RVD during measurement, but which recovered with K+ supplement, and Ca2+ enhanced RVD due to activation of ion channels. Therefore, this work provides a comprehensive assessment of cellular behavior and offers an innovative method for gaining insight into cellular functions and mechanisms. A novel strategy was conducted by integrating a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) with the function of cell volume regulation for analyzing the role of the pivotal ions ( K+, Cl-, Ca2+) in NaCl media on the behaviors of regulatory cell volume decrease (RVD).

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although numerous publications on three-dimensional printing (3DP) in spine surgery have been published, bibliometric analysis studies are scarce. Thus, this study aimed to present a bibliometric analysis of the status, hot spots, and frontiers of 3DP in spine surgery and associated research disciplines. METHODS: All publications relating to the utilization of 3DP in spine surgery from 1999 to May 9, 2022, were retrieved from the Web of Science. The bibliometric analysis was performed using CiteSpace software, and information on the country, institution, author, journal, and keywords for each publication was collected. RESULTS: A total of 270 articles were identified. From 2016 onward, a significant increase in publications on spinal surgery was observed. China was the most productive and influential country (98 publications) and H-index (22), followed by the USA and Australia. The most productive institution was Capital Medical University (9 publications). P. S. D'urso (8 publications, 46 citations) and R. J. Mobbs (8 publications, 39 citations) were the most prolific authors. European Spine Journal contributed the highest number of publications. The eight main clusters were: "rapid prototyping" #0, "3D printed" #1, "spine fusion" #2, "scoliosis" #3, "spine surgery" #4, "patient-specific" #5, "nervous system" #6, and "neuronavigation" #7. The strongest keyword bursts in 3DP in spine surgery were "fixation," "drill template," "instrumentation," "fusion," "complication," and "atlantoaxial instability." CONCLUSION: This analysis provides information on research trends and frontiers in the application of 3DP in spine surgery, as well as research and collaboration partners, institutions, and countries.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accurate segmentation of neonatal brain tissues and structures is crucial for studying normal development and diagnosing early neurodevelopmental disorders. However, there is a lack of an end-to-end pipeline for automated segmentation and imaging analysis of the normal and abnormal neonatal brain. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a deep learning-based pipeline for neonatal brain segmentation and analysis of structural magnetic resonance images (MRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two cohorts were enrolled in the study, including cohort 1 (582 neonates from the developing Human Connectome Project) and cohort 2 (37 neonates imaged using a 3.0-tesla MRI scanner in our hospital). We developed a deep leaning-based architecture capable of brain segmentation into 9 tissues and 87 structures. Then, extensive validations were performed for accuracy, effectiveness, robustness and generality of the pipeline. Furthermore, regional volume and cortical surface estimation were measured through in-house bash script implemented in FSL (Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain Software Library) to ensure reliability of the pipeline. Dice similarity score (DSC), the 95th percentile Hausdorff distance (H95) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated to assess the quality of our pipeline. Finally, we finetuned and validated our pipeline on 2-dimensional thick-slice MRI in cohorts 1 and 2. RESULTS: The deep learning-based model showed excellent performance for neonatal brain tissue and structural segmentation, with the best DSC and the 95th percentile Hausdorff distance (H95) of 0.96 and 0.99 mm, respectively. In terms of regional volume and cortical surface analysis, our model showed good agreement with ground truth. The ICC values for the regional volume were all above 0.80. Considering the thick-slice image pipeline, the same trend was observed for brain segmentation and analysis. The best DSC and H95 were 0.92 and 3.00 mm, respectively. The regional volumes and surface curvature had ICC values just below 0.80. CONCLUSIONS: We propose an automatic, accurate, stable and reliable pipeline for neonatal brain segmentation and analysis from thin and thick structural MRI. The external validation showed very good reproducibility of the pipeline.

RESUMO

Intersection crashes can be potentially mitigated through vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) safety management systems. It is important, however, to consider some of the human factors related aspects of such systems to maximise potential safety benefits. In this study, Intersection Manoeuvre Assistance Systems were conceptualised and evaluated in a driving simulator. The systems were designed to assist drivers with intersection manoeuvres by making use of connected infrastructure and providing real-time feedback, guidance, and active vehicle controls. The study compared drivers' confidence, workload, glances at the instrument panel, and hazard anticipation when driving using three systems-System A (no alert or assist); System B (alert only); and System C (alert and assist). Study results show differences in drivers' confidence in such systems and potentially degraded visual gaze behaviours.Practitioner summary: Connected infrastructure-based intersection management assistance systems can potentially reduce crashes. This experimental driving simulation study evaluated drivers' perceptions and reactions to intersection management systems. Results indicate reduced confidence in automated systems, reduced visual scanning for external hazards at intersections, and increased off-road glances towards the instrument panel.

RESUMO

A recent article entitled "Fullendoscopic (biportal or uniportal) versus microscopic lumbar decompression laminectomy in patients with spinal stenosis: systematic review and metaanalysis" written by Pairuchvej et al. (Eur J Orthop Surg Traumatol 30(4):595-611, 2019) published in "European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology" has aroused our great interest. The authors concluded that compared with minimally invasive decompression surgery, full endoscopic spinal surgery had better pain relief (back pain and leg pain) in the treatment of lumbar spinal stenosis and had a lower complication rate, but no statistical difference in oswestry disability index score and operative time between both groups. Comparing to minimally invasive spinal surgery, bi-portal endoscopic spinal surgery had better back pain relief in the early stage, while uni-portal full endoscopic spinal surgery had better pain relief in the leg and a lower rate of complications.

RESUMO

AIMS: To explore the effects of six months of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on pancreatic fat content and its impact on ß-cell function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 106 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomized to either a moderate-intensity aerobic training group (three times a week, including 5 min warm-up, 50 min aerobic dancing, and 5 min relaxation, n = 53) or control group (n = 53) with 6-month intervention. The primary endpoint was change in pancreatic fat content. An intention-to-treat analysis was conducted. RESULTS: Eighty-six patients completed the study with 43 patients in the aerobic training group. The average age, HbA1c, and pancreatic fat content for all participants (106 patients) were 66.39 ± 5.59 years, 7.05 ± 1.24%, and 10.35 ± 9.20%, respectively. Nearly half (49.06%) of patients were males. Subjects in the aerobic training group saw a significant reduction in pancreatic fat content when compared to controls (p = 0.001). In logistic regression models containing age, diabetes duration, change in BMI, smoking/drinking status, changes in lipid indices, and other abdominal fat content, only reduction in pancreatic fat content (p < 0.05) was an independent protective factor for ß-cell function and HbA1c. CONCLUSIONS: Six months of moderate-intensity aerobic training significantly reduced the pancreatic fat content. The reduction of pancreatic fat content was an independent protective factor for ß-cell function and HbA1c.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether magnetic susceptibility value (MSV) and radiomics features of the nigrostriatal system could be used as imaging markers for diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD) and its related cognitive impairment (CI). METHODS: A total of 104 PD patients and 45 age-sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). The former completed Hoehn-Yahr Stage and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The patients were divided into several subgroups according to disease stages, courses, and MoCA scores. The ROI was subdivided into the substantia nigra (SN), head of caudate nucleus (HCN), and putamen. The MSVs and radiomics features were obtained from QSM. The multivariable logistic regression (MLR) and support vector machine (SVM) models were constructed to diagnose PD. The correlations between MSVs, radiomics features, and MoCA scores were evaluated. RESULTS: The MSVs in bilateral SN pars compacta (SNc) of PD patients were higher than those of the HCs (p < 0.001). There were differences in some radiomics features between the two groups (p < 0.05). The MSVs of the right SNc and the radiomics features of the right SN had the highest area under the curve (AUC), respectively. The comprehensive MLR model (0.90) and SVM model (0.95) revealed better classification performance than MSVs (p < 0.05) in diagnosing PD. The MSVs from the HCN were negatively correlated with MoCA scores in PD subgroups. There were correlations between radiomics features and MoCA scores in PD patients. CONCLUSIONS: Radiomics features and MSVs of the nigrostriatal system from QSM could have crucial role in diagnosing PD and assessing CI. KEY POINTS: • The MLR and the SVM models have excellent diagnostic performance in the diagnosis of PD. • A PD diagnostic nomogram, created based on MSV and the radiomics scores of SVM model, is very convenient for clinical use. • The radiomics features of the nigrostriatal system based on QSM help to evaluate the cognitive impairment in PD patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Brucella spp. is an important zoonotic pathogen responsible for brucellosis in humans and animals. Brucella abortus A19 strain is a widespread vaccine in China. However, it has a drawback of residual virulence in animals and humans. METHODS: In this study, the BALB/c mice were inoculated with either 100 µL PBS(control group, C group), 109 CFU/mL inactivated B. abortus A19 strain (I group), 105 CFU/mL (low-dose group, L group) 106 CFU/mL live B. abortus A19 strain (high-dose group, H group), or 105 CFU/mL live B. abortus A19 strain combined with 109 CFU/mL inactivated B. abortus A19 strain (LI group). Mice were challenged with B. abortus strain 2308 at 7 week post vaccination. Subsequently, the immune and protective efficacy of the vaccines were evaluated by measuring splenic bacterial burden, spleen weight, serum IgG, interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-4 (IL-4) percentage of CD4 + and CD8 + T cells of mice via bacterial isolation, weighing, ELISA and flow cytometry, respectively. RESULTS: The splenic bacterial burden and spleen weight of the mice in group LI were mostly equivalent to the mice of group H. Moreover, Brucella-specific serum IgG, IFN-γ, IL-4, and the percentage of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells of the LI group mice were similar to those of the H group. In the subsequent challenge test, both vaccines conferred protective immunity to wild-type (WT) 2308 strain. In addition, the levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in these mice were similar to those of the mice in the H group. CONCLUSIONS: Combined immunization with low dose live vaccine and inactivated vaccine allowed to reduce the live B. abortus A19 vaccine, dose with an equivalent protection of the high-dose live vaccine.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neuromedin U (NMU) plays an important role in activating the group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and initiating the host's anti-parasitic immune responses. It is aimed to explore the distribution characteristics of NMU in the sheep small intestine and the influence of Moniezia benedeni infection on them. In the present study, the pET-28a-NMU recombinant plasmids were constructed, and Escherichia coli. BL21 (DE3) were induced to express the recombinant protein. And then, the rabbit anti-sheep NMU polyclonal antibody was prepared and immunofluorescence staining was performed with it. The expression levels of NMU in the intestine of normal and Moniezia benedeni-infected sheep were detected by ELISA. RESULTS: The results showed that the molecular weight of the obtained NMU recombinant protein was consistent with the expected molecular (13 kDa) and it was expressed in the form of inclusion body. The titer and specificity of obtained rabbit anti-sheep NMU polyclonal antibody were good. The results of immunofluorescence analysis showed that the nerve fibers which specifically expressed NMU mainly extended from the ganglion in the submucosal to lamina propria (LP) in the sheep small intestine, and the expression level was relatively high; especially on the nerve fibers of LP around the intestinal glands. The expression levels were gradually increased from the duodenum to the ileum, and the levels in the jejunum and ileum were significantly higher than that in the duodenum (P < 0.05). In addition, scattered NMU positive cells were distributed in the epithelium of the jejunal crypts. Moniezia benedeni infection increased the expression of NMU in each intestinal segment, especially in the jejunum and ileum there were significant increase (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was suggested that Moniezia benedeni infection could be detected by the high expression of NMU in sheep enteric nervous, and which laid the foundation for further studies on whether NMU exerts anti-parasitic immunity by activating ILC2s. In addition, NMU was expressed in some intestinal gland epitheliums, which also provided a basis for studying its roles in regulation of the immune homeostasis. The present study laid the foundation for further revealing the molecular mechanism of sheep's neural-immune interaction network perceiving the colacobiosis of parasites.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Premature ovarian failure (POF) is one of the common disorders found in women leading to 1% female infertility. Clinical features of POF are hypoestrogenism or estrogen deficiency. With the development of regenerative medicine, human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) therapy brings new prospects for POF. This research aims to reveal the therapeutic effects and potential mechanisms of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs)-derived exosomes on POF. METHODS: The mRNA and protein expressions in hucMSCs and ovarian granulosa cells (KGN and SVOG cells) were assessed using qRT-PCR and western blot. ELISA assay was performed to evaluate estradiol (E2) secretion in granulosa cells. The binding relationship between miR-21 and LATS1 was verified by dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation assay (RIP) assay. Additionally, Immunoprecipitation assay was carried out to confirm Lysyl oxidase like 2 (LOXL2) was phosphorylated by large tumor suppressor 1 (LATS1). Finally, the binding relationships between Yes-associated protein (YAP), StAR and LOXL2 were verified by dual-luciferase reporter assay and/or chromatin immunoprecipitation assay (ChIP) assay. RESULTS: Here our results displayed that miR-21 was overexpressed in hucMSCs and hucMSCs-derived exosomes, compared with that ovarian granulosa cells. hucMSC-exo with overexpressing miR-21 could markedly promote the secretion of estrogen in ovarian granulosa cells. LATS1 overexpression in ovarian granulosa cells reduced the secretion of estrogen. We subsequently confirmed that LATS1 was the target of miR-21. In addition, LATS1 could regulate StAR expression by phosphorylating LOXL2 and YAP. CONCLUSION: miR-21 carried by hucMSCs-derived exosomes could downregulate LATS1, thereby reducing phosphorylated LOXL2 and YAP, and ultimately promoting estrogen secretion in ovarian granulosa cells.

RESUMO

We present a kilowatt-level quasi-continuous-wave (QCW) cryogenically cooled 946-nm slab laser oscillator for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The laser system is based on a double-face-pumped large-size single-slab Nd:YAG design, delivering a record-high average power of 1.06 kW without additional amplification. This laser oscillator operates at repetition rate of 400 Hz with a pulse duration of 175 µs, resulting in a single pulse energy of 2.65 J. To the best of our knowledge, these results represent the highest output power and pulse energy for any all-solid-state 946-nm laser ever reported to date. Our scheme paves a new path for the development of the compact high-power solid-state 946-nm laser.

RESUMO

HCP5 has been reported to be downregulated in ovarian granulosa cells (OGCs) and to facilitate cell proliferation. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell exosome (hucMSCs-exo) treatment can prevent OGCs apoptosis in vitro. However, the functional mechanism of HCP5 and hucMSCs-exo requires further exploration. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) was performed to measure the expression of markers related to hucMSCs. The osteogenic and adipogenic potential of hucMSCs was measured by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin red and by oil red-O staining, respectively. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blotting were used to detect the mRNA and protein levels, respectively. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were measured by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, colony formation assay and flow cytometry. The interaction of HCP5/musashi RNA-binding protein 2 (MSI2) and oestrogen receptor alpha 1 (ESR1) mRNA was analysed using RNA pulldown and RIP assays. HucMSCs and exosomes were successfully isolated and identified. HucMSC-derived exosomes promoted the proliferation of OGCs and ESR1 expression and inhibited cell apoptosis. HCP5 overexpression in exosomes further enhanced these effects. MSI2 knockdown led to the opposite results. HCP5 targeted MSI2, and MSI2 knockdown reduced the decreases in HCP5 and ESR1 expression. Mechanistically, HCP5 in HucMSC-derived exosomes promoted ESR1 expression by binding to MSI2, which promoted the proliferation of OGCs.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to investigate LINC00278 expression in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and its involvement in the process of proliferation, migration, and invasion, providing a rationale for mining potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets of LSCC. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to identify optimal prognostic lncRNAs. MTS, colony formation, wound healing, and Transwell invasion assays were used to determine the effects of LINC00278 overexpression on the proliferation, migration, and invasion of cancer cells. The expressions of signaling pathway-related proteins and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) marker proteins were detected using western blot. The chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and dual-luciferase reporter assays were performed to demonstrate the binding of ETS proto-oncogene 1, transcription factor (ETS1), and LINC00278 promoter region. The molecular targets of LINC00278 were identified by RNA sequencing analysis and co-expression analysis. Kaplan-Meier analysis and CIBERSORT algorithm were used to analyze survival and immune cell infiltration based on LINC00278, COL4A1, and COL4A2. Multivariate Cox regression was used to establish a six-gene prognostic model. LINC00278 expression was low in LSCC tissues, and it was significantly associated with the TNM (tumors/nodes/metastases) stage (p<0.001), lymphatic metastasis (p<0.01), and pathological differentiation (p<0.01). LINC00278 overexpression significantly reduced LSCC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in TU686, TU177, and AMC-HN-8 cell lines. E-cadherin protein expression was increased, while N-cadherin, Vimentin, Zeb1, and Snail protein expression was decreased in the LINC00278 group, compared to the pcDNA3.1 group. Additionally, in AMC-HN-8 and FaDu cell lines, the LINC00278-treated group had significantly lower p-AKT and p-mTOR protein levels than the control group. ETS1 is a direct transcriptional regulator of the LINC00278 gene based on luciferase reporter assays and ChIP experiments. Western blot analysis demonstrated that high LINC00278 expression inhibited both ETS1 expression and phosphorylation. COL4A1/COL4A2 were identified as potential downstream targets of LINC00278. Meanwhile, the LINC00278/COL4A1/COL4A2-dominated low-risk group showed higher antigen-presenting activity and a higher immune score than the high-risk group. The findings indicated that ETS1 upregulated LINC00278 expression on the Y chromosome, which in turn inhibited LSCC growth in vivo and in vitro by inhibiting the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway via downregulation of COL4A1/COL4A2.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The rapid identification and isolation of individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 are fundamental countermeasures for the efficient control of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has affected millions of people around the world. Real-time RT-PCR is one of the most commonly applied reference methods for virus detection, and the use of pooled testing has been proposed as an effective way to increase the throughput of routine diagnostic tests. However, the clinical applicability of different types of real-time RT-PCR tests in a given group size remains inconclusive due to inconsistent regional disease prevalence and test demands. METHODS: In this study, the performance of one dual-target conventional and two point-of-care real-time RT-PCR tests in a 5-specimen pooled testing strategy for the detection of SARS-COV-2 was evaluated. RESULTS: We demonstrated the proof of concept that all of these real-time RT-PCR tests could feasibly detect SARS-CoV-2 from nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal specimens that contain viral RNA loads in the range of 3.48 × 105 to 3.42 × 102 copies/ml through pooled testing in a group size of 5 with overall positive percent agreement (pooling vs. individual testing) ranging from 100% to 93.75%. Furthermore, the two POC real-time RT-PCR tests exhibited comparable sensitivity to that of the dual-target conventional one when clinical specimens were tested individually. CONCLUSION: Our findings support the feasibility of using real-time RT-PCR tests developed as a variety of platforms in routine laboratory detection of suspected COVID-19 cases through a pooled testing strategy that is beneficial to increasing the daily diagnostic capacity.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine trends and hot subjects in the field of oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF) research during the last decade using bibliometric analysis and visualization tools, in order to assist researchers in exploring new directions for future research in that field. METHODS: Articles published from January 1, 2012, to August 15, 2021, were screened in the Web of Science database. The data were analyzed with CiteSpace software, which generated visualization knowledge maps. All literature was assessed for the following parameters: the number of total publications, distribution, h-index, institutions, journals, authors, co-occurrence state, and research hotspots. RESULTS: A total of 173 articles were identified. The country with the largest number of articles was China (41.04%), followed by South Korea (20.81%), the USA (15.61%), Japan (9.83%), and Thailand (2.89%). South Korea and the USA had the highest h-index (9), followed by China (8), Japan (7), and Thailand (2). Catholic University of Korea was the organization that produced the most literature. World Neurosurgery published the most papers about OLIF (12.50%), but articles in Spine were most frequently cited (151). Kim JS was the most productive author, whereas Silvestre C was the most cited author. The main research hotspots are anatomy, discectomy, approach, injure, and diseases. CONCLUSIONS: The number of publications in the field of OLIF has increased considerably in recent years. The USA, China, South Korea, and Japan have made substantial contributions to this field. Anatomy, complications, decompression surgery, and application in various degenerative lumbar diseases have been the research hotspots in recent years.

RESUMO

The recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) has attracted much attention in China as a way to rapidly transform and upgrade aquaculture ponds to realize zero-emissions of pollutants in aquaculture tail water. Tail water purification ponds (TWPPs) play an important role in the treatment of aquaculture wastewater. However, until now, there have been few reports on the occurrence of antibiotics in RAS and the removal of antibiotics from the TWPPs of RAS. Therefore, this study focused on the occurrence of antibiotics in a typical ecological RAS. For comparison, the same measurements were simultaneously carried out in nearby open aquaculture ponds and rivers. The pollution level and spatial distribution of antibiotics in the RAS and the removal of antibiotics in the TWPPs were explored. The results showed that (1) eleven and twelve antibiotics were detected in water and sediment samples in the RAS, respectively, but no antibiotics were found in fish muscles and feed. Erythromycin (ERY), lincomycin (LIN), and ciprofloxacin (CFX) were the three main types of antibiotics found in water and sediment samples. (2) The TWPPs of the RAS can effectively remove antibiotics in aquaculture water. The antibiotic concentration in recirculating aquaculture ponds of the RAS was as high as 180 ng/L. After treatments in the TWPPs, the antibiotic concentration of aquaculture water decreased to 81.6 ng/L (3) The antibiotic concentrations in recirculating aquaculture ponds (25.2-180 ng/L) were lower than those in the nearby open aquaculture ponds (126-267.3 ng/L), and the concentration of antibiotics in the sediments of recirculating aquaculture ponds was up to 22.9 ng/g, while that in TWPPs was as high as 56.1 ng/g. In conclusion, the antibiotic residues in the RAS were low after antibiotics were banned in feed in China, and the removal of antibiotics in the TWPPs was more pronounced. Furthermore, cross-contamination was found between the RAS, surrounding open aquaculture ponds and the river, and the water supply of the RAS was likely to be the main contributor of antibiotics in the aquaculture environments. This study can help the government formulate discharge standards for antibiotics in aquaculture and also provide a reference for the transformation and upgrading of aquaculture ponds to achieve a zero-emission aquaculture mode.

RESUMO

Background: Surgical incision pain, rebound pain, and recurrence can manifest themselves in different forms of postoperative pain after full endoscopic lumbar discectomy (FELD). This study aims to evaluate various postoperative pains after FELD and summarize their characteristics. Methods: Data about the demographic characteristics of patients, pain intensity, and functional assessment results were collected from January 2016 to September 2019. Clinical outcomes including Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and visual analog scale (VAS) scores, were obtained. Results: A total of 206 patients were enrolled. ODI and VAS of the patients significantly decreased after FELD at 12-month follow-up. A total of 193 (93.7%) patients had mild surgical incision pain after FELD and generally a VAS < 4, and it mostly resolved on its own within 3 days. A total of 12 (5.8%) patients experienced rebound pain, which was typically characterized by pain (mainly leg pain with or without back pain), generally occurring within 2 weeks after FELD and lasting < 3 weeks. The pain levels of rebound pain were equal to or less than those of preoperative pain, and generally scored a VAS of < 6. The recurrence rate was 4.4%. Recurrence often occurs within three months after surgery, with the pain level of the recurrence being greater than or equal to the preoperative pain. Conclusions: Different types of postoperative pain have their own unique characteristics and durations, and treatment options are also distinct. Conservative treatment and analgesia may be indicated for rebound pain and surgical incision pain, but recurrence usually requires surgical treatment.

RESUMO

Remifentanil is a potent, short-acting opioid analgesic drug that can protect tissues from ischemia and reperfusion injury though anti-inflammatory effects. However, the utility of remifentanil in liver regeneration after hepatectomy is not known. Using a 70% hepatectomy mouse model (PHx), we found that preconditioning animals with 4 µg/kg remifentanil enhanced liver regeneration through supporting hepatocyte proliferation but not through anti-inflammatory effects. These effects were also phenocopied in vitro where 40 mM remifentanil promoted the proliferation of primary mouse hepatocyte cultures. We further identified that remifentanil treatment increased the expression of ß-arrestin 2 in vivo and in vitro. Demonstrating specificity, remifentanil preconditioning failed to promote liver regeneration in liver-specific ß-arrestin 2 knockout (CKO) mice subjected to PHx. While remifentanil increased the expression of activated (phosphorylated)-ERK and cyclin D1 in PHx livers, their levels were not significantly changed in remifentanil-treated CKO mice nor in WT mice pretreated with the ERK inhibitor U0126. Our findings suggest that remifentanil promotes liver regeneration via upregulation of a ß-arrestin 2/ERK/cyclin D1 axis, with implications for improving regeneration process after hepatectomy.
