Although it is known that increasing age is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in allogeneic transplantation (allo-HSCT), individualization of the process may allow to perform it in progressively older patients.This study analyzed the outcome of 97 patients older than 60 years with a first allo-HSCT performed at our institution between 2011 and 2019.Median age was 66 years (range 60-79) and 15.4% were older than 70 years. The most frequent diagnosis was acute leukemia (50.5%), and 58.8% received a myeloablative conditioning. With a median follow-up of 33.9 months (range 7.9-111.5), at 3-years overall survival (OS) was 50%; progression-free survival (PFS), 46%; cumulative incidence of relapse, 22%; and non-relapse mortality (NRM), 32%. There were no significant differences in OS (p = 0.415), PFS (p = 0.691), cumulative incidence of relapse (p = 0.357) or NRM (p = 0.658) between patients of 60-64 years (n = 37), 65-69 (n = 45) and ≥ 70 years (n = 15). No differences were observed either depending on the intensity of the conditioning regimen in terms of OS (p = 0.858), PFS (p = 0.729), cumulative incidence of relapse (p = 0.416) or NRM (p = 0.270).In conclusion, older adults can safely and effectively undergo allo-HSCT with proper patient selection and individualized transplantation procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Growing, albeit heterogenous evidence questions whether attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with socio-cognitive impairments, especially beyond childhood. This study focuses on mentalizing - the socio-cognitive ability to attribute and reason in terms of mental states. We aimed to characterize mentalizing performance in terms of correct scores and types of errors in adolescents and young adults with ADHD. METHODS: Forty-nine adolescents and adults with ADHD and 49 healthy controls matched for age and gender completed a computerized naturalistic mentalizing task, the Movie for Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Repeated measures analyses of variance examined the effects of age group and ADHD diagnosis on MASC performance. Additionally, associations between mentalizing scores, the severity of attention problems, and the presence of comorbidity were explored in the ADHD group. RESULTS: Results showed an increased prevalence of hypomentalizing errors in adolescents with ADHD. Lower mentalizing scores in adolescents with ADHD were correlated with indices of inattentiveness, impulsivity, and vigilance problems. Hypomentalizing errors in adolescents showed to be particularly associated with inattentiveness, after controlling for age and comorbidity. In contrast, adults with ADHD performed similarly to controls and their scores on the mentalizing task were not correlated to attention problems. CONCLUSION: These findings highlight potential developmental differences in mentalizing abilities in ADHD youths and their association with attentional impairments.

RESUMO

Noise pollution is a growing problem in urban areas, and it is important to study and evaluate its impact on human health and well-being. This work presents the design of a low-cost IoT model and implementation of two prototypes to collect noise level data in a specific area of the regional center of Chiriquí, at the Technological University of Panama that can be replicated to create a noise monitoring network. The prototypes were designed using Autodesk Fusion 360, and the data were stored in a MySQL database. Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS Pro were used to analyze the data, generate graphs, and display the information on maps. The results of the analysis can be used to develop strategies to reduce noise pollution and improve the quality of life in urban areas.

The taiep rat undergoes hypomyelination and progressive demyelination caused by an abnormal microtubule accumulation in oligodendrocytes, which elicits neuroinflammation and motor behavior dysfunction. Based on taurine antioxidant and proliferative actions, this work explored whether its sustained administration from the embryonic age to adulthood could prevent neuroinflammation, stimulate cell proliferation, promote myelination, and relieve motor impairment. Taurine (50 mg/L of drinking water = 50 ppm) was given to taiep pregnant rats on gestational day 15 and afterward to the male offspring until eight months of age. We measured the levels of nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde + 4-hydroxyalkenals (MDA + 4-HDA), CXCL1, CXCR2 receptor, growth factors (BNDF and FGF2), cell proliferation, and myelin content over time. Integral motor behavior was also evaluated. Our results showed that taurine administration significantly decreased NO and MDA + 4-HDA levels, increased cell proliferation, and promoted myelination in an age- and brain region-dependent fashion compared with untreated taiep rats. Taurine effect on chemokines and growth factors was also variable. Taurine improved vestibular reflexes and limb muscular strength in perinatal rats and fine movements and immobility episodes in adult rats. These results show that chronic taurine administration partially alleviates the taiep neuropathology.

Growth arrest-specific 1 (Gas1) is a pleiotropic protein that induces apoptosis of tumor cells and has important roles during development. Recently, the presence of two forms of Gas1 was reported: one attached to the cell membrane by a GPI anchor; and a soluble extracellular form shed by cells. Previously, we showed that Gas1 is expressed in different areas of the adult mouse CNS. Here, we report the levels of Gas1 mRNA protein in different regions and analyzed its expressions in glutamatergic, GABAergic, and dopaminergic neurons. We found that Gas1 is expressed in GABAergic and glutamatergic neurons in the Purkinje-molecular layer of the cerebellum, hippocampus, thalamus, and fastigial nucleus, as well as in dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. In all cases, Gas1 was found in the cell bodies, but not in the neuropil. The Purkinje and the molecular layers show the highest levels of Gas1, whereas the granule cell layer has low levels. Moreover, we detected the expression and release of Gas1 from primary cultures of Purkinje cells and from hippocampal neurons as well as from neuronal cell lines, but not from cerebellar granular cells. In addition, using SH-SY5Y cells differentiated with retinoic acid as a neuronal model, we found that extracellular Gas1 promotes neurite outgrowth, increases the levels of tyrosine hydroxylase, and stimulates the inhibition of GSK3ß. These findings demonstrate that Gas1 is expressed and released by neurons and promotes differentiation, suggesting an important role for Gas1 in cellular signaling in the CNS.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore whether interactions between FTO rs9939609 and ABCA1 rs9282541 affect BMI and waist circumference (WC), and could explain previously reported population differences in FTO-obesity and FTO-BMI associations in the Mexican and European populations. METHODS: A total of 3938 adults and 636 school-aged children from Central Mexico were genotyped for both polymorphisms. Subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue biopsies from 22 class III obesity patients were analyzed for FTO and ABCA1 mRNA expression. Generalized linear models were used to test for associations and gene-gene interactions affecting BMI, WC and FTO expression. RESULTS: FTO and ABCA1 risk alleles were not individually associated with higher BMI or WC. However, in the absence of the ABCA1 risk allele, the FTO risk variant was significantly associated with higher BMI (P = 0.043) and marginally associated with higher WC (P = 0.067), as reported in Europeans. The gene-gene interaction affecting BMI and WC was statistically significant only in adults. FTO mRNA expression in subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue according to ABCA1 genotype was consistent with these findings. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report showing evidence of FTO and ABCA1 gene variant interactions affecting BMI, which may explain previously reported population differences. Further studies are needed to confirm this interaction.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy aims to improve the outcome of breast cancer patients, but only few would benefit from this treatment. Pathological complete response has been proposed as a surrogate marker for the prediction of long-term clinical benefits; however, 50%-85% patients have an unfavorable pathological complete response to chemotherapy. MicroRNAs are known biomarkers of breast cancer progression; nevertheless, their potential to identify patients with pathological complete response remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether a microRNA profile could be associated with pathological complete response in triple-negative breast cancer patients receiving 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin, cyclophosphamide-cisplatin/paclitaxel as a novel neoadjuvant chemotherapy. In the discovery cohort, the expression of 754 microRNAs was examined in tumors from 10 triple-negative breast cancer patients who achieved pathological complete response and 8 without pathological complete response using TaqMan Low-Density Arrays. Unsupervised hierarchical cluster analysis identified 11 microRNAs with significant differences between responder and no-responder patients (fold change ≥ 1.5; p < 0.05). The differential expression of miR-30a, miR-9-3p, miR-770, and miR-143-5p was validated in an independent group of 17 patients with or without pathological complete response. Moreover, Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that expression of these four microRNAs was associated with an increased disease-free survival. Gene ontology classification of predicted microRNA targets indicated that numerous genes are involved in pathways related to chemoresistance, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, focal adhesion kinase, WNT, ERbB, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and AKT signaling. In summary, we identified a novel microRNA expression signature associated with pathological complete response in breast cancer. We propose that the four validated microRNAs could be used as molecular biomarkers of clinical response in triple-negative breast cancer patients with pathological complete response to neoadjuvant therapy.

Radiotherapy is an important treatment option for non-small cell lung carcinoma patients. Despite the appropriate use of radiotherapy, radioresistance is a biological behavior of cancer cells that limits the efficacy of this treatment. Deregulation of microRNAs contributes to the molecular mechanism underlying resistance to radiotherapy in cancer cells. Although the functional roles of microRNAs have been well described in lung cancer, their functional roles in radioresistance are largely unclear. In this study, we established a non-small cell lung carcinoma Calu-1 radioresistant cell line by continuous exposure to therapeutic doses of ionizing radiation as a model to investigate radioresistance-associated microRNAs. Our data show that 50 microRNAs were differentially expressed in Calu-1 radioresistant cells (16 upregulated and 34 downregulated); furthermore, well-known and novel microRNAs associated with resistance to radiotherapy were identified. Gene ontology and enrichment analysis indicated that modulated microRNAs might regulate signal transduction, cell survival, and apoptosis. Accordingly, Calu-1 radioresistant cells were refractory to radiation by increasing cell survival and reducing the apoptotic response. Among deregulated microRNAs, miR-29c was significantly suppressed. Reestablishment of miR-29c expression in Calu-1 radioresistant cells overcomes the radioresistance through the activation of apoptosis and downregulation of Bcl-2 and Mcl-1 target genes. Analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas revealed that miR-29c is also suppressed in tumor samples of non-small cell lung carcinoma patients. Notably, we found that low miR-29c levels correlated with shorter relapse-free survival of non-small cell lung carcinoma patients treated with radiotherapy. Together, these results indicate a new role of miR-29c in radioresistance, highlighting their potential as a novel biomarker for outcomes of radiotherapy in lung cancer.

Individual differences in working memory ability are mainly revealed when a demanding challenge is imposed. Here, we have associated cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptor genetic variation rs2180619 (AA, AG, GG), which is located in a potential CNR1 regulatory sequence, with performance in working memory. Two-hundred and nine Mexican-mestizo healthy young participants (89 women, 120 men, mean age: 23.26 years, SD = 2.85) were challenged to solve a medium (2-back) vs. a high (3-back) difficulty N-back tasks. All subjects responded as expected, performance was better with the medium than the high demand task version, but no differences were found among genotypes while performing each working memory (WM) task. However, the cost of the level of complexity in N-back paradigm was double for GG subjects than for AA subjects. It is noteworthy that an additive-dosage allele relation was found for G allele in terms of cost of level of complexity. These genetic variation results support that the endocannabinoid system, evaluated by rs2180619 polymorphism, is involved in WM ability in humans.

It is known that the microtubules (MT) of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites form an intranuclear mitotic spindle. However, electron microscopy studies and the employment of anti-beta-tubulin (ß-tubulin) antibodies have not exhibited these cytoskeletal structures in the cytoplasm of these parasites. The purpose of this work was to detect ß-tubulin in the cytoplasm of interphasic E. histolytica trophozoites. Activated or non-activated HMI-IMSS-strain E. histolytica trophozoites were used and cultured for 72 h at 37 °C in TYI-S-33 medium, and then these were incubated with the anti-ß-tubulin antibody of E. histolytica. The anti-ß-tubulin antibody reacted with the intranuclear mitotic spindle of E. histolytica-activated trophozoites as control. In contrast, in non-activated interphasic parasites, anti-ß-tubulin antibody reacted with diverse puntiform structures in the cytoplasm and with ring-shaped structures localized in the cytoplasm, cellular membrane and endocytic stomas. In this work, for the first time, the presence of ß-tubulin is shown in the cytoplasm of E. histolytica trophozoites.

Prophylactic subacute administration of zinc decreases lipoperoxidation and cell death following a transient cerebral hypoxia-ischemia, thus suggesting neuroprotective and preconditioning effects. Chemokines and growth factors are also involved in the neuroprotective effect in hypoxia-ischemia. We explored whether zinc prevents the cerebral cortex-hippocampus injury through regulation of CCL2, CCR2, FGF2, and IGF-1 expression following a 10 min of common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO). Male rats were grouped as follows: (1) Zn96h, rats injected with ZnCl2 (one dose every 24 h during four days); (2) Zn96h + CCAO, rats treated with ZnCl2 before CCAO; (3) CCAO, rats with CCAO only; (4) Sham group, rats with mock CCAO; and (5) untreated rats. The cerebral cortex-hippocampus was dissected at different times before and after CCAO. CCL2/CCR2, FGF2, and IGF-1 expression was assessed by RT-PCR and ELISA. Learning in Morris Water Maze was achieved by daily training during 5 days. Long-term memory was evaluated on day 7 after learning. Subacute administration of zinc increased expression of CCL2, CCR2, FGF2, and IGF-1 in the early and late phases of postreperfusion and prevented the CCAO-induced memory loss in the rat. These results might be explained by the induction of neural plasticity because of the expression of CCL2 and growth factors.

BACKGROUND: The anti-inflammatory effect of the cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF) was shown recently in primary glial cell cultures, yet such effect remains unknown both in vivo and in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) models of Parkinson's disease (PD). We addressed this issue by performing an intranigral transfection of the human CDNF (hCDNF) gene in the critical period of inflammation after a single intrastriatal 6-OHDA injection in the rat. METHODS: At day 15 after lesion, the plasmids p3xNBRE-hCDNF or p3xNBRE-EGFP, coding for enhanced green florescent protein (EGFP), were transfected into the rat substantia nigra (SN) using neurotensin (NTS)-polyplex. At day 15 post-transfection, we measured nitrite and lipoperoxide levels in the SN. We used ELISA to quantify the levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, endogenous rat CDNF (rCDNF) and hCDNF. We also used qRT-PCR to measure rCDNF and hCDNF transcripts, and immunofluorescence assays to evaluate iNOS, CDNF and glial cells (microglia, astrocytes and Neuron/Glial type 2 (NG2) cells). Intact SNs were additional controls. RESULTS: In the SN, 6-OHDA triggered nitrosative stress, increased inflammatory cytokines levels, and activated the multipotent progenitor NG2 cells, which convert into astrocytes to produce rCDNF. In comparison with the hemiparkinsonian rats that were transfected with the EGFP gene or without transfection, 6-OHDA treatment and p3xNBRE-hCDNF transfection increased the conversion of NG2 cells into astrocytes resulting in 4-fold increase in the rCDNF protein levels. The overexpressed CDNF reduced nitrosative stress, glial markers and IL-6 levels in the SN, but not TNF-α and IL-1ß levels. CONCLUSION: Our results show the anti-inflammatory effect of CDNF in a 6-OHDA rat of Parkinson's disease. Our results also suggest the possible participation of TNF-α, IL-1ß and IL-6 in rCDNF production by astrocytes, supporting their anti-inflammatory role.

In this work a non-homogeneous Poisson model is considered to study noise exposure. The Poisson process, counting the number of times that a sound level surpasses a threshold, is used to estimate the probability that a population is exposed to high levels of noise a certain number of times in a given time interval. The rate function of the Poisson process is assumed to be of a Weibull type. The presented model is applied to community noise data from Messina, Sicily (Italy). Four sets of data are used to estimate the parameters involved in the model. After the estimation and tuning are made, a way of estimating the probability that an environmental noise threshold is exceeded a certain number of times in a given time interval is presented. This estimation can be very useful in the study of noise exposure of a population and also to predict, given the current behavior of the data, the probability of occurrence of high levels of noise in the near future. One of the most important features of the model is that it implicitly takes into account different noise sources, which need to be treated separately when using usual models.

The transient hypoxic-ischemic attack, also known as a minor stroke, can result in long-term neurological issues such as memory loss, depression, and anxiety due to an increase in nitrosative stress. The individual or combined administration of chronic prophylactic zinc and therapeutic selenium is known to reduce nitrosative stress in the first seven days post-reperfusion and, due to an antioxidant effect, prevent cell death. Besides, zinc or selenium, individually administered, also causes antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. Therefore, this work evaluated whether combining zinc and selenium could prevent stroke-elicited cognition and behavior deficits after 30 days post-reperfusion. Accordingly, we assessed the expression of growth factors at 7 days post-reperfusion, a four-time course of memory (from 7 to 28 days post-learning test), and cell proliferation, depression, and anxiety-like behavior at 30 days post-reperfusion. Male Wistar rats with a weight between 190 and 240 g) were treated with chronic prophylactic zinc administration with a concentration of 0.2 mg/kg for 15 days before common carotid artery occlusion (10 min) and then with therapeutic selenium (6 µg/kg) for 7 days post-reperfusion. Compared with individual administrations, the administration combined of prophylactic zinc and therapeutic selenium decreased astrogliosis, increased growth factor expression, and improved cell proliferation and survival in two regions, the hippocampus, and cerebral cortex. These effects prevented memory loss, depression, and anxiety-like behaviors. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that the prophylactic zinc administration combined with therapeutic selenium can reduce the long-term sequelae caused by the transient ischemic attack. Significance statement. A minor stroke caused by a transient ischemic attack can result in psychomotor sequelae that affect not only the living conditions of patients and their families but also the economy. The incidence of these micro-events among young people has increased in the world. Nonetheless, there is no deep understanding of how this population group responds to regular treatments (Ekker and et al., 2018) [1]. On the basis that zinc and selenium have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties in stroke animal models, our work explored whether the chronic combined administration of prophylactic zinc and therapeutic selenium could prevent neurological sequelae in the long term in a stroke rat model of unilateral common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO) by 10-min. Our results showed that this combined treatment provided a long-term neuroprotective effect by decreasing astrogliosis, memory loss, anxiety, and depression-like behavior.

Government responses to the COVID-19 pandemic generated a new wave of social inequalities for communities around the world living in unjust circumstances . Lockdowns and health measures overlooked housing conditions, transitions to virtual schooling, ignoring homes and families without the technological infrastructure and skills to access education, as well as overlooking the availability of an economic remainder. informal employment. The experiences of various communities around the world, from racialized/ethnic communities, homeless, migrants, elderly to young populations, were not reflected in the knowledge that guided the Government's responses; in fact, their experiences were involuntarily silenced . As a result of all this, it was necessary to create alliances with communities that lived in vulnerable conditions and that bore the great burden of the pandemic, to ensure that their voices were included in Public Health policies and practices.


Las respuestas de los gobiernos a la pandemia de la COVID-19 generaron una nueva ola de desigualdades sociales para las comunidades de todo el mundo que vivían en circunstancias injustas . Los confinamientos y las medidas sanitarias pasaron por alto las condiciones de vivienda, las transiciones a la escolarización virtual, ignorando los hogares y las familias sin las infraestructuras tecnológicas y habilidades para acceder a la educación, así como la disponibilidad de un remanente económico pasó por alto el empleo informal. Las experiencias de varias comunidades en todo el mundo, desde comunidades racializadas/étnicas, personas sin hogar, migrantes, ancianos hasta poblaciones jóvenes, no se reflejaron en el conocimiento que orientó las respuestas del Gobierno; de hecho, sus experiencias fueron silenciadas involuntariamente . A consecuencia de todo ello, fue necesario generar alianzas con las comunidades que vivían en condiciones de vulnerabilidad y que soportaban la gran carga de la pandemia, para garantizar así que sus voces se incluyeran en las políticas y prácticas de Salud Pública.

Background: Xicotli data is the short name given to the dataset generated within the project framework "Integration of Biodiversity Data for the Management and Conservation of Wild Bee-Plant Interactions in Mexico (2021-2023)", as xicotli is the generic word for a bee in Nahuatl. The team comprised eco-informaticians, ecologists and taxonomists of both native bees and flora. The generated dataset contains so far 4,532 curated records of the plants, which are potential hosts of species of three focal families of bees native to Mexico: Apidae, Halictidae and Megachilidae and morphological and ecological data of the plant-bee interactions. This dataset was integrated and mobilised from citizen observations available at naturalista.mx (iNat), which were compiled through the iNaturalist project. New information: The new information obtained with the Xicotli data project was: Taxonomic information about bee species curated by taxonomists based on the information contained in iNaturalist;Taxonomic identification of the host plants by a botanist from the photos compiled by the Xicotli Data project;Data on the ecomorphological traits of bees and plants based on expert knowledge and literature. All the data were integrated into the Xicotli Data Project via the creation of new "observation fields". The visibility of the information originally contained in iNaturalist was maximized and can be consulted directly on the iNaturalist platform.

Nosocomial infections caused by Escherichia coli pose significant therapeutic challenges due to the high expression of genes encoding antimicrobial drug resistance. In this study, we investigated the conformation of the beta-lactam resistome responsible for the specific pattern of resistance against beta-lactam antibiotics. A total of 218 Escherichia coli strains were isolated from in-hospital patients diagnosed with nosocomial infections, obtained from various sources such as urine (n = 49, 22.48%), vaginal discharge (n = 46, 21.10%), catheter tips (n = 14, 6.42%), blood (n = 13, 5.96%), feces (n = 12, 5.50%), sputum (n = 11, 5.05%), biopsies (n = 8, 3.67%), cerebrospinal fluid (n = 2, 0.92%) and other unspecified discharges (n = 63, 28.90%). To characterize the beta-lactam resistome, all strains were subjected to antibiotic dilution tests and grown in beta-lactam antibiotics supplemented with Luria culture medium. Subsequently, multiplex PCR and next-generation sequencing were conducted. The results show a multi-drug-resistance phenotype, particularly against beta-lactam drugs. The primary determinant of this resistance was the expression of the blaTEM gene family, with 209 positive strains (95.87%) expressing it as a single gene (n = 47, 21.6%) or in combination with other genes. Common combinations included blaTEM + blaCTX (n = 42, 19.3%), blaTEM + blaCTX + blaSHV (n = 13, 6%) and blaTEM + blaCTX + blaBIL (n = 12, 5.5%), among others. The beta-lactam resistome of nosocomial Escherichia coli strains isolated from inpatients at the "October first" Regional Hospital of ISSSTE was predominantly composed of members of the blaTEM gene family, expressed in various configurations along with different members of other beta-lactamase gene families.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), mainly ischemic heart disease and stroke, is the main cause of death worldwide and each year more people die from CVD than from any other cause. These data call for a paradigm shift, where health promotion and cardiovascular prevention will acquire a central role in health policies. From this perspective, dedicating time during the consultation to promoting the acquisition of heart-healthy habits would be indicated in all individuals, regardless of cardiovascular risk classification, the role of the internist being fundamental. This position document from the International Forum of Internal Medicine (FIMI) presents the main indications regarding changes in lifestyle and acquisition of healthy habits to prevent CVD. The different sections will address topics including: nutrition, physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep, stress, environmental problems related to CVD and specific conditions in women. A section is included about starting CVD promotion and prevention measures at an early age, childhood and adolescence, also mentioning epigenetic aspects related to CVD. Social determinants in CVD are also taken into account, since some of these aspects, such as low socioeconomic level, modify cardiovascular risk and should be taken into account.


Las enfermedades cardiovasculares (ECV), principalmente la cardiopatía isquémica y el accidente cerebrovascular (ACV), constituyen la principal causa de muerte a nivel mundial y cada año mueren más personas por ECV que por cualquier otra causa. Estos datos requieren la necesidad de un cambio de paradigma, en donde la promoción de la salud y la prevención cardiovascular adquieran un papel central en las políticas sanitarias. Desde esta perspectiva, dedicar tiempo durante la consulta en promocionar la adquisición de hábitos cardiosaludables estaría indicado en todos los individuos, independientemente de la clasificación de riesgo cardiovascular, siendo fundamental el rol del médico internista en su función de médico de cabecera. En este documento de posicionamiento del Foro Internacional de Medicina Interna (FIMI) se presentan algunas pautas para recomendar e indicar modificaciones en el estilo de vida y adquisición de hábitos saludables para prevenir la ECV, que tienen el objetivo de ser una herramienta practica para el médico internista. Las diferentes secciones abordaran temas que incluyen: nutrición, actividad física, sedentarismo, obesidad, hábito tabáquico, consumo de alcohol, sueño, estrés, problemas ambientales relacionados a la ECV y condiciones específicas en la mujer. Se incluyó un apartado acerca de comenzar las medidas de promoción y prevención de ECV en edades tempranas, infancia y adolescencia, mencionando además aspectos epigenéticos relacionados a la ECV. Se tienen en cuenta además los determinantes sociales en ECV, ya que algunos de estos aspectos, como el bajo nivel socioeconómico, modifican el riesgo cardiovascular y debieran ser tenidos en cuenta.

The R230C variant of the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) gene has been consistently associated with decreased HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations in several studies in the Mexican mestizo population. However, information on how diet composition modifies the effect of the ABCA1-R230C variant on HDL-C concentrations is very scarce. The aim of the present study was to analyze whether the effect of ABCA1-R230C on HDL-C concentrations is modulated by dietary factors in a nationwide population sample of 3591 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted by the State's Employees' Social Security and Social Services Institute. All participants answered a validated questionnaire to assess health status and weekly food consumption. Fasting blood samples were drawn for biochemical analysis and DNA extraction, and the ABCA1-R230C variant was genotyped using TaqMan assays. Statistical analyses consisted of simple linear and multiple regression modeling adjusting for age, BMI, smoking, and alcohol consumption. The overall C risk allele frequency was 9.3% and the variant was significantly associated with low HDL-C concentrations in both sexes. A significant negative correlation between carbohydrate consumption and HDL-C concentrations was observed in women bearing the R230C variant (P = 0.021) and a significant gene-diet interaction was found only in premenopausal women (P = 0.037). In conclusion, the effect of the ABCA1-R230C gene variant on HDL-C concentrations is modulated by carbohydrate intake in premenopausal women. This finding may help design optimized dietary interventions according to sex and ABCA1-R230C genotype.
