RESUMO

This study shows the antibacterial effect of amniotic fluid collected on 10 women from 32 to 38 weeks. Two techniques were used. The first is a quantitative analysis of a bacterial culture with amniotic fluid as compared to controls, with inhibition by the amniotic fluid demonstrated. The second is a morphologic analysis of gonorrheal cultures by electron microscopy, showing alteration of the bacteria when amniotic fluid is present. These facts are of interest when one tries to understand the discrepancy between high rates of discovery of bacteria during pregnancy and low rates of intra-amniotic infection by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

RESUMO

The authors observed the dependence of morphometric indicators of myelinated nerve fibers on the age of experimental animals. They performed a morphometric analysis of myelinated nerve fibers, namely nervous peroneus communis in male adult white rats of 17, 21, 25 and 31 weeks of age. They discovered that the values of individual morphometric indicators of axons of myelinated nerve fibers (axon perimeter, axon circular diameter, axon area, circular axon area) and their distribution vary in dependence on age of experimental animals. The authors emphasize that observation of experimental alterations of morphometric indicators of myelinated nerve fiber axons requires a comparison of findings in groups of animals with those in control groups of animals of the same age. (Tab. 2, Fig. 4, Ref. 28.)

RESUMO

The authors describe morphologic changes in mastocytes in the picture of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and skin changes in patients with urticaria pigmentosa (7 causes) and systemic mastocytosis (2 causes). The presented study analyzes the changes in the cellular membrane and cytoplasmic processes, intracytoplasmic membrane structures, mitochondria, granules, and nuclei of mastocytes in patients with systemic mastocytosis. The authors evaluate these cells as being atypical, respectively immature. The study discusses the malignization of these states. (Tab. 2, Fig. 8, Ref. 16.)

RESUMO

A survey of morphological changes of myelinated nerve fibers of peripheral nerves recorded in experimental streptozotocin induced diabetes mellitus in rats is presented. Causes of discordant interpretations of findings are considered and pathogenetic mechanisms involved in morphological changes of myelinated nerve fibers of peripheral nerves observed in this model of diabetes mellitus are discussed. RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine morphometric changes of myelinated fibers in early stages of experimental diabetes mellitus. Adult male Wistar rats aged 17 wk were used in this study. Diabetes mellitus was induced by streptozotocin. Samples of common peroneal nerve from diabetic rats (4 and 8 wk after induction of diabetes mellitus) and age-matched control animals were removed and processed. The semithin cross sections were stained with toluidine blue and used for myelinated fiber computer-aided morphometric analysis. There were no significant changes in diabetic animals after 4 wk duration of the disease. There was significant reduction in myelinated nerve fiber caliber in diabetic rats 8 wk after induction of diabetes as compared to age-matched controls. There was no significant reduction of axonal area in this group of diabetic rats, so diminution of fiber area was caused predominantly by reduction of myelin sheath area. The study demonstrates that the induction of diabetes mellitus in rat by streptozotocin is accompanied by early changes of the morphometric indices of myelinated nerve fibers of peripheral nerve.

RESUMO

Ten selected samples of amniotic fluid obtained through transabdominal amniocentesis from 10 pregnant women in their 17th-19th weeks of pregnancy were investigated for the survival of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in amniotic fluid. In 8 cases an antibacterial effect was observed with morphological changes comparable to the effect of benzylpenicillin. When N. gonorrhoeae was inoculated in amniotic fluid at 10(5)-10(7) cells/ml, it survived as an average 2 h longer than after inoculation of 10(2)-10(4) cells/ml. Electron microscopic pictures of gonococci taken after 2.6 and 24 h incubation in amniotic fluid correlated with the growth curves. Electron microscopically there were marked morphologic changes of N. gonorrhoeae, viz. vacuolar degeneration of their cytoplasm with a damage to the bacterial wall up to its complete destruction and lysis of the cell.

RESUMO

The authors studied the shape, orientation and number of Schmidt-Lantermann incisures in the sciatic nerve of the healthy guinea pig. The nerves were removed, fixed, shredded and evaluated in the light microscope. Internode length, fibre diameter and segment length were measured in isolated nerve fibres with an eyepiece micrometer. The number and configuration of the Schmidt-Lantermann incisures in the internode were found to be variable. The incisures follow one another at irregular intervals, dividing the whole internode into cylindroconical segments of varying lengths. The measured values were processed on a PMD 85/2 personal microcomputer.

RESUMO

The authors studied Schmidt-Lantermann incisures in myelinated fibres of the guinea pig sciatic nerve. Incisures of different shapes were observed and described in longitudinal sections; some of them were simply shaped, but others had a very intricate form. It is assumed that the atypical, intricate forms are complete incisures which change course and acquire a complex shape in longitudinal sections.

RESUMO

Tissue distribution experiments with 125I-1 16 alpha-iodo-estradiol (Amersham) showed the highest tissue-to-blood ratio of 3 to 8 in the liver, uterus, mammary gland, ovaries and adrenals up to 2 h after the injection. Satisfactory images with a simple autoradiographical techniques according to Stumpf [1971] have been achieved at 2 h after the injection of drug.
