RESUMO

Recent work on the visual guidance of locomotor interception of nonuniformly moving targets argued for an early reliance on first-order (velocity-based) changes in the target's bearing angle that was complemented approximately 1 second later with reliance on second-order (acceleration-based) changes. Here we provide further support for this hypothesis in a virtual driving task, in which 19 participants steered a vehicle to intercept targets moving along receding circular trajectories. Adopting a set of carefully designed target trajectories, we tested discriminating predictions with respect to the timing and direction of the first steering action. Analyses of temporal and directional characteristics of first steering events revealed a pattern of results that was fully compatible with our predictions. Moreover, application of the recently developed QuID method, focusing on the temporal co-evolution of steering behavior and the potential information sources driving it, confirmed the operative progression from early reliance on first-order changes to subsequent (after approximately 1 second) reliance on a combination of first- and second-order changes in the target's bearing angle over the course of action at the individual-trial level. The finding of an evolution over time toward higher-order informational variables, potentially captured by a fractional-order time derivative, may have consequences for other locomotor interception tasks such as running to catch a fly ball.

For use in autonomous micro air vehicles, visual sensors must not only be small, lightweight and insensitive to light variations; on-board autopilots also require fast and accurate optical flow measurements over a wide range of speeds. Using an auto-adaptive bio-inspired Michaelis-Menten Auto-adaptive Pixel (M 2 APix) analog silicon retina, in this article, we present comparative tests of two optical flow calculation algorithms operating under lighting conditions from 6 × 10 - 7 to 1 . 6 × 10 - 2 W·cm - 2 (i.e., from 0.2 to 12,000 lux for human vision). Contrast "time of travel" between two adjacent light-sensitive pixels was determined by thresholding and by cross-correlating the two pixels' signals, with measurement frequency up to 5 kHz for the 10 local motion sensors of the M 2 APix sensor. While both algorithms adequately measured optical flow between 25 ∘ /s and 1000 ∘ /s, thresholding gave rise to a lower precision, especially due to a larger number of outliers at higher speeds. Compared to thresholding, cross-correlation also allowed for a higher rate of optical flow output (99 Hz and 1195 Hz, respectively) but required substantially more computational resources.

Individuals with unilateral cerebral palsy (CP) demonstrate reduced performance in upper limb tasks compared to typically developing (TD) peers. We examined whether task conditions modify differences between teenagers with and without CP during a reciprocal aiming task. Twenty teenagers (nine CP and 11 TD) moved a pointer between two targets as fast as possible without missing a target. Task conditions were manipulated by changing the targets' size, by modifying the inertial properties of the pointer and by varying the upper limb used to perform the task (preferred/non-affected and non-preferred/affected upper limbs). While compared to TD peers, CP teenagers exhibited lower performance (longer movement times). Such differences were attenuated when the task was performed with the preferred upper limb and when accuracy requirements were less stringent. CP teenagers were not differentially affected by the pointer inertia manipulation. Task conditions not only affected performance but also joint kinematics. CP teenagers revealed less movement at the elbow and more movement at the shoulder when performing the task with their less skilled upper limb. However, both CP and TD teenagers demonstrated a larger contribution of trunk movement when facing more challenging task conditions. The overall pattern of results indicated that the joint kinematics employed by individuals with unilateral CP constituted adaptive responses to task requirements. Thus, the explanation of the effects of unilateral CP on upper limb behavior needs to go beyond a context-indifferent manifestation of the brain injury to include the interaction between task demands and action capabilities.

Using plain white and chequered footballs, we evaluated observers' sensitivity to rotation direction and the effects of ball texture on interceptive behaviour. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the maximal distance at which observers (n = 8) could perceive the direction of ball rotation decreased when rotation frequency increased from 5 to 11 Hz. Detection threshold distances were nevertheless always larger for the chequered (decreasing from 47 to 28 m) than for the white (decreasing from 15 to 11 m) ball. In Experiment 2, participants (n = 7) moved laterally along a goal line to intercept the two balls launched with or without ±4.3 Hz sidespin from a 30-m distance. The chequered ball gave rise to shorter movement initiation times when trajectories curved outward (±6 m arrival positions) or did not curve (±2 m arrival positions). Inward curving trajectories, arriving at the same ±2 m distances from the participants as the non-curving trajectories, evoked initial movements in the wrong direction for both ball types, but the amplitude and duration of these reversal movements were attenuated for the chequered ball. We conclude that the early detection of rotation permitted by the chequered ball allowed modulation of interception behaviour without changing its qualitative characteristics.

Pottery is a quintessential indicator of human cultural dynamics. Cultural alignment of behavioral repertoires and artifacts has been considered to rest upon two distinct dynamics: selective transmission of information and culture-specific biased transformation. In a cross-cultural field experiment, we tested whether community-specific morphological features of ceramic vessels would arise when the same unfamiliar shapes were reproduced by professional potters from three different communities who threw vessels using wheels. We analyzed the details of the underlying morphogenesis development of vessels in wheel throwing. When expert potters from three different communities of practice were instructed to faithfully reproduce common unfamiliar model shapes that were not parts of the daily repertoires, the morphometric variation in the final shape was not random; rather, different potters produced vessels with more morphometric variation among than within communities, indicating the presence of community-specific deviations of morphological features of vessels. Furthermore, this was found both in the final shape and in the underlying process of morphogenesis; there was more variation in the morphogenetic path among than within communities. These results suggest that the morphological features of ceramic vessels produced by potters reliably and nonrandomly diverge among different communities. The present study provides empirical evidence that collective alignment of morphological features of ceramic vessels can arise from the community-specific habits of fashioning clay.

In this study, we aimed to characterize the affordance of interceptability for oneself using a manual lateral interception paradigm. We asked a two-fold research question: (1) What makes a virtual ball interceptable or not? (2) How reliably can individuals perceive this affordance for oneself? We hypothesized that a spatiotemporal boundary would determine the interceptability of a ball, and that individuals would be able to perceive this boundary and make accurate perceptual judgments regarding their own interceptability. To test our hypotheses, we administered a manual lateral interception task to 15 subjects. They were first trained on the task, which was followed by two experimental sessions: action and judging. In the former, participants were instructed to intercept as many virtual balls as possible using a hand-held slider to control an on-screen paddle. In the latter session, while making interceptions, participants were instructed to call "no" as soon as they perceived a ball to be uninterceptable. Using generalized linear modeling on the data, we found a handful of factors that best characterized the affordance of interceptability. As hypothesized, distance to be covered and ball flight time shaped the boundary between interceptable and uninterceptable balls. Surprisingly, the angle of approach of the ball also co-determined interceptability. Altogether, these variables characterized the actualized interceptability. Secondly, participants accurately perceived their own ability to intercept balls on over 75% of trials, thus supporting our hypothesis on perceived interceptability. Analyses revealed that participants considered this action boundary while making their perceptual judgments. Our results imply that the perceiving and actualizing of interceptability are characterized by a combination of the same set of variables.

In daily life, we often encounter situations in which we have to coordinate our actions with others to achieve a common goal. These actions are also defined as joint actions. In this study we investigated how a multi-agent system learns to acquire control in a novel joint action task. To this end, we designed a task in which agents had to coordinate their actions so as to control a ball rolling on a long, hand-held beam. Participants' task was to roll the ball as fast and accurately as possible back-and-forth between two indicated targets on the beam, by manually adjusting the inclination angle of the beam. In the joint action version of this task, two participants each hold a different beam extremity. In a solo action version, the participant holds one extremity while the other is attached to a static support. The experiment consisted of two practice sessions that each comprised 15 two-min trials. One group of 12 participants first performed a solo action session of the task and then a joint action session (Group S/J), while another group of 12 participants started with a joint action session, followed by a solo action session (Group J/S). While performance increased over practice in all sessions, we found that in the joint action task dyads without prior solo task experience (Group J/S) adopted a sequential pattern of interpersonal coordination by freezing their motion whenever the other agent moved. In contrast, dyads that had received prior practice in the solo task setting (Group S/J) demonstrated less freezing and more complementary motion during the joint action performance. Lastly, we found that initial practice as a dyad in the joint action task did not result in a significant improvement of a subsequent solo action performance. We concluded that multi-agent motor learning in a novel joint action task is characterized by the initial freezing of task-relevant degrees of freedom, while individual training in a constrained setting can stimulate the freeing of these DFs during subsequent joint action performance.

Five elite gymnasts performed giant circles on the high bar under different conditions of loading (without and with 6-kg loads attached to the shoulders, waist or ankles). Comparing the gymnasts' kinematic pattern of movement with that of a triple-pendulum moving under the sole influence of nonmuscular forces revealed qualitative similarities, including the adoption of an arched position during the downswing and a piked position during the upswing. The structuring role of nonmuscular forces in the organization of movement was further reinforced by the results of an inverse dynamics analysis, assessing the contributions of gravitational, inertial and muscular components to the net joint torques. Adding loads at the level of the shoulders, waist or ankles systematically influenced movement kinematics and net joint torques. However, with the loads attached at the level of the shoulders or waist, the load-induced changes in gravitational and inertial torques provided the required increase in net joint torque, thereby allowing the muscular torques to remain unchanged. With the loads attached at the level of the ankles, this was no longer the case and the gymnasts increased the muscular torques at the shoulder and hip joints. Together, these results demonstrate that expert gymnasts skillfully exploit the operative nonmuscular forces, employing muscle force only in the capacity of complementary forces needed to perform the task.

In two experiments we studied how participants steer to intercept uniformly moving targets in a virtual driving task under hypotheses-differentiating conditions of initial target eccentricity and target motion. In line with our re-analysis of findings from earlier studies, in both experiments the observed interception behavior could not be understood as resulting from reliance on (changes in) egocentric target direction nor from reliance on (changes in) target-heading angle. The overall pattern of results observed was however compatible with a control strategy based on nulling changes in the target's bearing angle. The presence of reversals in movement direction under specific combinations of target eccentricity and motion conditions indicated that the information used was not purely rate-of-change (i.e., first-order) based but carried traces of an influence of initial target position. In Experiment 2 we explicitly tested the potential role of early reliance on perceived egocentric target direction by examining the effects of a 10° rotation of the visual scene (i.e., of both target and environment). While such a rotation gave rise to minor changes in the moment of initiation of the first steering action, contrary to predictions it did not affect the characteristics of the direction-reversal phenomenon. We conclude that the visual guidance of locomotor interception is best understood as resulting from nulling changes in the target's bearing angle, with such nulling perhaps best conceived as being fractional-order (rather integer-order) driven.

This study explored the informational variables guiding steering behaviour in a locomotor interception task with targets moving along circular trajectories. Using a new method of analysis focussing on the temporal co-evolution of steering behaviour and the potential information sources driving it, we set out to invalidate reliance on plausible informational candidates. Applied to individual trials rather than ensemble averages, this Qualitative Inconsistency Detection (QuID) method revealed that steering behaviour was not compatible with reliance on information grounded in any type of change in the agent-centred target-heading angle. First-order changes in the environment-centred target's bearing angle could also not adequately account for the variations in behaviour observed under the different experimental conditions. Capturing the observed timing of unfolding steering behaviour ultimately required a combination of (velocity-based) first-order and (acceleration-based) second-order changes in bearing angle. While this result may point to reliance on fractional-order based changes in bearing angle, the overall importance of the present findings resides in the demonstration of the necessity to break away from the existing practice of trying to fit behaviour into a priori postulated functional strategies based on categorical differences between operative heuristic rules or control laws.

Here we studied how participants steer to intercept uniformly moving targets in a virtual driving task. We tested the hypothesis that locomotor interception behavior cannot fully be explained by a strategy of nulling rate of change in pertinent agent-target relations such as the target-heading angle or target's bearing angle. In line with a previously reported observation and model simulations, we found that, under specific combinations of initial target eccentricity and target motion direction, locomotor paths revealed reversals in movement direction. This phenomenon is not compatible with unique reliance on first-order (i.e., rate-of-change based) information in the case of uniformly moving targets. We also found that, as expected, such reversals in movement direction were not observed consistently over all trials of the same experimental condition: their presence depended on the timing of the first steering action effected by the participant, with only early steering actions leading to reversals in movement direction. These particular characteristics of the direction-reversal phenomenon demonstrated here for a locomotor interception-by-steering task correspond to those reported for lateral manual interception. Together, these findings suggest that control strategies operating in manual and locomotor interception may at least share certain characteristics.

It takes longer to accomplish difficult tasks than easy ones. In the context of motor behaviour, Fitts' famous law states that the time needed to successfully execute an aiming movement increases linearly with task difficulty. While Fitts' explicit formulation has met criticism, the relation between task difficulty and movement time is invariantly portrayed as continuous. Here, we demonstrate that Fitts' law is discontinuous in reciprocal aiming owing to a transition in operative motor control mechanisms with increasing task difficulty. In particular, rhythmic movements are implemented in easy tasks and discrete movements in difficult ones. How movement time increases with task difficulty differs in both movement types. It appears, therefore, that the human nervous system abruptly engages a different control mechanism when task difficulty increases.

To coordinate the redundant degrees of freedom (DOF) in the action system, synergies are often proposed. Synergies organize DOF in temporary task-specific units emerging from interactions among task, organism, and environmental constraints. We examined whether task constraints affect synergies, end-effector kinematics, or both. To this end, we compared synergies and end-effector kinematics when participants (N = 15) performed discrete movements of identical amplitude in manual reaching (stationary targets) and manual lateral interception (moving targets, with different angles of approach). We found that time-velocity profiles were roughly symmetric in reaching, whereas they had a longer decelerative tail and showed an angle-of-approach effect in interception. Uncontrolled manifold analyses showed that in all conditions joint angle variability was primarily covariation, indicating a synergistic organization. The analysis on the clusters of joint angle configurations demonstrated differences between reaching and interception synergies, whereas more similar synergies were used within interception conditions. This implies that some task constraints operate at the level of synergies while other task constraints only affect end-effector kinematics. The results support a 2-step process in the organization of DOF, consisting of synergy formation and further constraining of synergies to produce the actual movement, as proposed by Kay (1988). Ceramics are quintessential indicators of human culture and its evolution across generations of social learners. Cultural transmission and evolution theory frequently emphasizes apprentices' need for accurate imitation (high-fidelity copying) of their mentors' actions. However, the ensuing prediction of standardized fashioning patterns within communities of practice has not been directly addressed in handicraft traditions such as pottery throwing. To fill this gap, we analysed variation in vessel morphogenesis amongst and within traditional potters from culturally different workshops producing for the same market. We demonstrate that, for each vessel type studied, individual potters reliably followed distinctive routes through morphological space towards a much-less-variable common final shape. Our results indicate that mastering the pottery handicraft does not result from accurately reproducing a particular model behaviour specific to the community's cultural tradition. We provide evidence that, at the level of the elementary clay-deforming gestures, individual learning rather than simple imitation is required for the acquisition of a complex motor skill such as throwing pottery.

Using a precision grip, 12 participants horizontally oscillated a lightweight object at different movement frequencies (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 Hz) under two types of elastic load. In the first (CENT), the center of oscillation coincided with the neutral position of the object in the elastic force field, leading to two peaks in load force (LF) per cycle of movement (2:1 frequency ratio). In the second (BACK and FRONT), the neutral elastic force position of the object was located outside the range of movement, thus leading to only one LF peak per cycle of movement (1:1 frequency ratio). Results showed that in BACK and FRONT the coupling between grip force (GF) and LF (as reflected by coefficients of correlations) remained strong for all movement frequencies. In contrast, this coupling decreased in CENT as movement frequency increased, with participants switching progressively from two to one GF modulation per cycle of movement. Specific evaluation of performance under conditions giving rise to comparable LF frequencies (CENT at 1.0 Hz vs. BACK/FRONT at 2.0 Hz) confirmed the effect of frequency ratio on GF-LF coupling. We conclude that the control of GF is more efficient when LF varies at the frequency of movement than when it varies at twice this frequency, especially when movement frequency is high. These results are interpreted in the context of coordination dynamics and forward modeling approach.

We studied how teams of two players of different skill level intercepted approaching balls in the doubles-pong task. In this task, the two players moved their on-screen paddles along a shared interception axis, so that the approaching ball was intercepted by one of the paddles and that the paddles did not collide. Earlier work revealed the presence of a fuzzy division of interception space, with a boundary between interception domains located in the space between the two initial paddle positions. In the present study, using the performance of the players in their individual training sessions, we formed teams of players of varying skill level. We considered two accounts of how this boundary should be understood. In a first account, the players have shared knowledge of this boundary. Based on the side of the boundary at which the approaching ball will cross the interception axis, the players would decide whose paddle is to make the interception. Under this account, we expected that a better-skilled player would take responsibility for a larger interception domain, leading to a boundary closer to the lesser-skilled player. However, our analyses did not reveal any systematic effect of skill difference on the location (or degree of fuzziness) of the boundary: location of boundaries and overlap of interception domains varied over teams but were not systematically related to skill differences between team members. We did find effects of ball speed and approach angle. In a second account, the boundary emerges from (information-driven) player-player-ball interactions. An action-based model consistent with this account was able to capture all the patterns in boundary positions and overlaps that we observed. We conclude that the interception patterns that players demonstrate in the doubles-pong task are best understood as emerging from the unfolding of the dynamics of the system of the two players and the ball, coupled through information.

In many daily situations, our behavior is coordinated with that of others. This study investigated this coordination in a doubles-pong task. In this task, two participants each controlled a paddle that could move laterally near the bottom of a shared computer screen. With their paddles, the players needed to block balls that moved down under an angle. In doing so, they needed to make sure that their paddles did not collide. A successful interception led to the ball bouncing back upwards. Importantly, all communication other than through vision of the shared screen was excluded. In the experiment, the initial position of the paddle of the right player was varied across trials. This allowed testing hypotheses regarding the use of a tacitly understood boundary to divide interception space. This boundary could be halfway the screen, or in the middle between the initial positions of the two paddles. These two hypotheses did not hold. As an alternative to planned division of labor, the behavioral patterns might emerge from continuous visual couplings of paddles and ball. This was tested with an action-based decision model that considered the rates of change of each player's angle between the interception axis and the line connecting the ball and inner edge of the paddle. The model accounted for the observed patterns of behavior to a very large extent. This led to the conclusion that decisions of who would take the ball emerged from ongoing social coordination. Implications for social coordination in general are discussed.

Using a fixed-base driving simulator we compared the effects of the size and type of traffic vehicles (i.e., normal-sized or double-sized cars or motorcycles) approaching an intersection in two different tasks. In the perceptual judgment task, passively moving participants estimated when a traffic vehicle would reach the intersection for actual arrival times (ATs) of 1, 2, or 3s. In line with earlier findings, ATs were generally underestimated, the more so the longer the actual AT. Results revealed that vehicle size affected judgments in particular for the larger actual ATs (2 and 3s), with double-sized vehicles then being judged as arriving earlier than normal-sized vehicles. Vehicle type, on the other hand, affected judgments at the smaller actual ATs (1 and 2s), with cars then being judged as arriving earlier than motorcycles. In the behavioral task participants actively drove the simulator to cross the intersection by passing through a gap in a train of traffic. Analyses of the speed variations observed during the active intersection-crossing task revealed that the size and type of vehicles in the traffic train did not affect driving behavior in the same way as in the AT judgment task. First, effects were considerably smaller, affecting driving behavior only marginally. Second, effects were opposite to expectations based on AT judgments: driver approach speeds were smaller (rather than larger) when confronted with double-sized vehicles as compared to their normal-sized counterparts and when confronted with cars as compared to motorcycles. Finally, the temporality of the effects was different on the two tasks: vehicle size affected driver approach speed in the final stages of approach rather than early on, while vehicle type affected driver approach speed early on rather than later. Overall, we conclude that the active control of approach to the intersection is not based on successive judgments of traffic vehicle arrival times. These results thereby question the general belief that arrival time estimates are crucial for safe interaction with traffic.

This case study examined how two rowers adapted their rowing patterns following crew training as a newly formed coxless pair. The two participants were expert (double-oar) single scull-boat rowers. Performing as a crew in the coxless-pair's sweep-boat, where each rower operates a single oar, on-the-water data were collected before and after a 6-week intensive team-training program. Rowing patterns were characterized by the horizontal oar angle, oar angular velocity and linear oar-water velocity profiles during the catch (minimal oar angle) to finish (maximal oar angle) half-cycles of the propulsive water phase. After crew training, rowers demonstrated a tighter synchronization and a closer correspondence in oar angle at the moment of catch, together with a closer matching of the evolution over time of their subsequent oar movements. Most likely due to the inherent asymmetries involved in sweep-boat rowing, the stroke rower also developed a somewhat longer-duration larger-amplitude oar movement than the bow rower. Remarkably, both rowers revealed changes in the inter-cycle variability of their individual patterns of rowing. While the initially more variable stroke rower improved the consistency of his rowing pattern over practice, the initially highly consistent bow rower on the contrary relaxed his tendency to always perform in the same way. We discuss how the crew performance changed over training and to what extent it was associated with changes in individual behaviors. Along the way we demonstrate that the often-used measure of average continuous relative phase does not adequately capture the particularities of the coordination pattern observed. Overall, the results obtained at the individual level of analysis suggest that team benefits were obtained through distinct adaptations of the rowers' individual rowing patterns.

Flexibility in motor actions can be defined as variability in the use of degrees of freedom (e.g., joint angles in the arm) over repetitions while keeping performance (e.g., fingertip position) stabilized. We examined whether flexibility can be increased through enlarging the joint angle range during practice in a manual obstacle-avoidance target-pointing task. To establish differences in flexibility we partitioned the variability in joint angles over repetitions in variability within (GEV) and variability outside the solution space (NGEV). More GEV than NGEV reflects flexibility; when the ratio of the GEV and NGEV is higher, flexibility is higher. The pretest and posttest consisted of 30 repetitions of manual pointing to a target while moving over a 10 cm high obstacle. To enlarge the joint angle range during practice participants performed 600 target-pointing movements while moving over obstacles of different heights (5-9 cm, 11-15 cm). The results indicated that practicing movements over obstacles of different heights led participants to use enlarged range of joint angles compared to the range of joint angles used in movements over the 10 cm obstacle in the pretest. However, for each individual obstacle neither joint angle variance nor flexibility were higher during practice. We also did not find more flexibility after practice. In the posttest, joint angle variance was in fact smaller than before practice, primarily in GEV. The potential influences of learning effects and the task used that could underlie the results obtained are discussed. We conclude that with this specific type of practice in this specific task, enlarging the range of joint angles does not lead to more flexibility.
