RESUMO

In this research, the effect of curing temperature on the metalloid (As) leachability of cemented paste backfill (CPB; a mix of tailings, cement and water) is studied. ASTM C 1308 leaching protocol is used to determine the leachability of CPB samples subjected to different curing temperatures (2, 20 and 35 °C). In addition, the effect of curing temperature on the microstructure of CPB is assessed to determine if the temperature dependence of the leaching characteristics of CPB is related to variations in the microstructure of the cement matrix. The microstructural techniques used include, powder x-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The results obtained indicate that the curing temperature has a significant effect on the leachability of CPB. It is found that as curing temperature increased from 2 °C to 35 °C the performance of the CPB for arsenic immobilization decreased. The magnitude of this temperature-induced change in As-leachability of CPB depends on the curing temperature range (low (≤20 °C) or elevated (35 °C) temperatures). This curing temperature dependency of the leachability of CPB is attributable to the temperature-induced changes in the pore structure of CPB, formation/development of hydration products and pH in the CPBs during the curing process. The results also indicate that diffusion dominates as the leaching mechanism through the studied temperature range and is independent of curing temperature. However, curing temperature does control the availability for arsenic to leach. The new findings presented in this paper will contribute to design more environmental-friendly cemented paste backfill materials and structures, which is vital for sustainable mining.

RESUMO

A captive 3-mo-old white African lion (Panthera leo) presented with clinical signs of acute pain and a distended abdomen. Despite emergency treatment, the lion died a few hours after presentation. Postmortem examination revealed gross changes in the liver, spleen, and lungs and an anomalous cystic structure in the bile duct. Histologic examination identified severe generalized multifocal to coalescent necrotizing and neutrophilic hepatitis, neutrophilic splenitis, and mild interstitial pneumonia, consistent with bacterial septicemia. The abnormal biliary structures resembled biliary cystadenoma. However, due to the age of the animal, they were presumed to be congenital in origin. Biliary tract anomalies and cystadenomas have been reported previously in adult lions, and this case suggests that at least some of these examples may have a congenital basis. It is unclear whether the lesion was an underlying factor in the development of hepatitis.

RESUMO

Ventricular candidiasis is consistently one of the most prominent pathologic conditions diagnosed in stone curlews (Burhinus oedicnemus) in the United Arab Emirates, predominately affecting the captive population. Predisposing factors are a humid environment, stress, immunosuppression, inadequate nutrition, and an extended use of oral antibiotics. In this report, we describe the clinical signs, diagnosis, and pathologic result in stone curlews with ventricular candidiasis.

RESUMO

An analysis of excess winter deaths across the West Midlands found higher levels in the NHS Birmingham East and North area than in the rest of the region. The trust created an algorithm to identify those at risk of excess winter death and fuel poverty.

RESUMO

The structure of 1,4-B4S2(NMe2)4 has been determined by gas-phase electron diffraction and quantum chemical calculations and is compared with the known solid-state structure. While these structures are similar, with a twisted ring geometry [the dihedral angle S-B-B-S from electron diffraction is 75.4(16) degrees], they are strikingly different to the solid-state structure of 1,4-B4O2(OH)4, which is planar. Using quantum chemical calculations, the combinations of O or S in the ring and OH or NMe2 as the substituent have been studied and it has been shown that there are two separate causes of the twisted ring. Since the calculated (and observed) structure of 1,4-B4O2(OH)4 is planar but that of 1,4-B4S2(OH)4 is twisted, it is concluded that the inclusion of sulfur in the ring twists the structure by approximately 40 degrees. By comparing the structures of 1,4-B4S2(OH)4 and 1,4-B4S2(NMe2)4 it has been determined that the twist caused by the NMe2 groups is around 30 degrees.
