RESUMO

To cope with a critical lack of foster families, Nova Scotia's Department of Community Services uses rented private facilities staffed by subcontracted companies, known as "places of safety". Similar models are used across the country, with places of safety intended to be used for emergency placements only. The mean length of stay in a place of safety was 255 nights in 2020. Male children are far overrepresented, as are Indigenous children. Despite the increasing use of places of safety, little is known about the impacts of these short-term and unhomelike environments. Previous research on placement disruption shows that placement change and multiple placements impact children's health, mental health, and attachment behaviour. This paper presents data on the use of places of safety in Nova Scotia and synthesizes existing research on placement disruption to present advocacy priorities and directions for further research.

The self-assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) into thin films at the liquid-liquid interface has promising applications in industries such as catalysis, optics, and sensors. However, precise control over their formation is complex, influenced by several factors which scale differently with core size. Due to their small free energy of adsorption, there are few examples of AuNPs with core diameters <10 nm. The present research evaluates the adsorption of ∼3 nm AuNPs from either side of the oil-aqueous interface with variations in ligand shell composition, the oil phase composition, and the structure of alcohol additives to best drive thin-film formation. Film formation and quality are evaluated, and a recent thermodynamic model is used to gain insight into the primary forces promoting this adsorption. Results demonstrate that longer-chain alcohol additives (namely, n-butanol and n-hexanol) induced adsorption more efficiently than shorter-chain alcohols (ethanol). The volume of alcohol additive needed to induce adsorption was dependent upon the ligand composition, suggesting that the mechanism for induced interfacial adsorption is via interaction with the AuNP ligand shell. Comparison with the thermodynamic model indicates that the driving force for this induced adsorption is the alteration of the three-phase contact angle. Additionally, the use of various oils demonstrates that as oil-water interfacial tension increases, more AuNPs adsorb to the interface. This relationship is also supported by the model. Insight gained for favorable conditions of adsorption for AuNPs < 10 nm as well as the underlying thermodynamic mechanism is important in working toward the ability to fine-tune such films for industrial applications.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop, implement, and assess the effects of an alarm management policy and educational program on nurses' perceptions and practices of alarm management in an acute care hospital. METHOD: Nurses from an acute care hospital in the southeastern United States attended a mandatory alarm management education program. The hospital implemented the evidence-based alarm management education to achieve the NPSG.06.01.01: Alarm Management. Pre- and posttests were administered to evaluate the education and the changes in nurses' perceptions and practices of clinical alarms. RESULTS: A total of 417 nurses received the educational intervention. All participants completed the pretest, and 215 (51%) completed the voluntary posttest. Significant improvements were made in alarm perceptions and practices. Nurses suggested unit-specific alarm education, improved staffing, and updated equipment. CONCLUSION: Findings support the benefits of continued education in alarm management for nurses. Bedside nurses are a critical member of a multidisciplinary alarm management team because they are at the forefront of patient safety and most at risk for experiencing alarm fatigue.
