Background: Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic mental disorder that involves disruptions in cognitive processes, emotional responsiveness, and social interactions. Psychotherapeutic and social integration practices have increasingly been added to the pharmacological treatment in an effort to improve the level of functioning and the quality of life of individuals affected by this condition. Befriending, defined as a one-on-one companionship provided by a volunteer who aims to act as an emotionally supportive liaison, is hypothesized to be an effective such intervention, offering support for building and maintaining social relationships in the community. Despite its increase in popularity and acceptance, befriending remains poorly understood and under-researched. Methods: We performed a systematic search for studies targeting befriending either as an intervention or a controlled condition in studies on schizophrenia. Searches were performed in four databases: APA PsycInfo, Pubmed, Medline and EBSCO. The keywords "schizophrenia," AND "befriending," were searched for on all databases. Results: The search yielded 93 titles and abstracts, of which 18 met the criteria for inclusion. The studies included in this review have all incorporated befriending as an intervention or a controlled condition, as per our search criteria, and aimed at depicting the value and feasibility of this intervention to address social and clinical deficits in individuals with schizophrenia. Conclusion: The studies selected for this scoping review revealed inconsistent findings regarding the effect of befriending on overall symptoms and the subjective reporting of quality of life in individuals with schizophrenia. This inconsistency may be attributed to differences between the studies and their specific limitations.

Background: Terms currently used to describe the so-called challenging and disruptive behaviors (CBDs) of children with intellectual disabilities (ID) have different connotations depending on guiding contextual frameworks, such as academic and cultural settings in which they are used. A non-judgmental approach, which does not attempt to establish existing categorical diagnoses, but which describes in a neutral way, is missing in the literature. Therefore, we tried to describe CDBs in youth with ID in an explorative study. Methods: Interviews with families investigated the CDBs of five youth with Down syndrome. At home, families tracked youth's sleep/wake behaviors and physical activity. Youth were observed in a summer school classroom. The collected information and suggested explanatory models for observed CDBs were reviewed with the families. Results: We grouped CDBs as challenging, if they were considered to be reactive or triggered, or unspecified, if no such explanatory model was available. A third category was created for light-hearted CDBs: goofy, acknowledging the right to laugh together with peers. We found some relationships between sleep, physical activity, and CDBs and developed an explorative approach, supporting a child-centered perspective on CDBs. Conclusion: The controversial discussions on terminology and management of CDBs in the literature demonstrate the need for a non-judgmental approach. Such an explorative approach, allowing non-professionals to not label, has been missing. The fact that, up to now, the light-hearted behaviors of an individual with ID have not been integrated in commonly-used behavioral checklists as their natural right, proves our concept and indicates that a paradigm change from judgment-based to exploratory-driven approaches is needed.

The cartoon Fidgety Philip, the banner of Western-ADHD diagnosis, depicts a 'restless' child exhibiting hyperactive-behaviors with hyper-arousability and/or hypermotor-restlessness (H-behaviors) during sitting. To overcome the gaps between differential diagnostic considerations and modern computing methodologies, we have developed a non-interpretative, neutral pictogram-guided phenotyping language (PG-PL) for describing body-segment movements during sitting (Journal of Psychiatric Research). To develop the PG-PL, seven research assistants annotated three original Fidgety Philip cartoons. Their annotations were analyzed with descriptive statistics. To review the PG-PL's performance, the same seven research assistants annotated 12 snapshots with free hand annotations, followed by using the PG-PL, each time in randomized sequence and on two separate occasions. After achieving satisfactory inter-observer agreements, the PG-PL annotation software was used for reviewing videos where the same seven research assistants annotated 12 one-minute long video clips. The video clip annotations were finally used to develop a machine learning algorithm for automated movement detection (Journal of Psychiatric Research). These data together demonstrate the value of the PG-PL for manually annotating human movement patterns. Researchers are able to reuse the data and the first version of the machine learning algorithm to further develop and refine the algorithm for differentiating movement patterns.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to compare the practical aspects of providing medication abortions through telemedicine and in-person clinic visits so that clinics can use this information when planning to add this service. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a comparative retrospective chart review comparing telemedicine medication abortions to a control group matched for date seen. We extracted and compared demographics, use of dating ultrasound, outcomes and unscheduled visits or communications with staff and physicians. RESULTS: During the study period, we provided 4340 medication abortions, of which 182 (4.2%) were provided through by telemedicine; 199 patients met the criteria to be in the control group. The mean age was 28.7 years for telemedicine patients and 28.1 years for in-person patients (p = .38). The mean gestational ages were also similar, 48.2 days for telemedicine patients and 46.5 days for in-person patients (p = .03). Only 33 (18.1%) of telemedicine patients had dating ultrasounds compared to 199 (100%) of in-clinic patients (p < .001). The proportions of documented completed abortions (164/182, 90.1% and 179/199, 89.9%, p = .76) were similar, as were the proportions of aspirations for completion (6/182, 3.3% and 9/199, 4.5%, p = .54) and the proportions lost to follow-up (5.5% and 6.6%, p = .66). There were 10 complications in each group (5.5% of telemedicine patients and 5.0% of in-clinic patients) (p > 0.5). Unscheduled communications with office assistants were greater in the telemedicine patients than the in-person patients (84/182, 46.2% vs. 43/199, 21.6% in-person, p < .001). CONCLUSION: We found that telemedicine patients required more unscheduled communications and received ultrasounds far less often compared to in-clinic patients. IMPLICATIONS: We could provide telemedicine without the need for ultrasound to most women. Larger studies without routine ultrasound use are needed to validate our findings. Unscheduled communication with clinic staff was more frequent with telemedicine medication abortion patients. This information may help clinics when planning to add this service.

Overstocking can be a major issue in the dairy cattle industry, leading to negative changes in feeding and resting behavior. Additional stress imposed and alterations in feeding behavior may significantly impact the rumen microbiome. The rumen microbiome is responsible for the successful conversion of feed to usable energy for its host. Thus, understanding the effects of stocking density on the rumen microbiome is imperative for further elucidation of potentially negative consequences of overstocking in dairy cattle. This study implemented a Latin Square design accounting for four pens of cattle and four treatment periods so that all treatment combinations were assigned to every pen during one period of the study. Two treatment factors, including two levels of physically effective neutral detergent fiber, achieved with addition of chopped straw, and stocking density (100% vs. 142%) of freestalls and headlocks, were combined and tested within a factorial treatment design. Within each pen, three or four cannulated cows (n = 15 total) were sampled for rumen content on the final day of each treatment period. Each treatment was randomly assigned to a single pen for a 14-day period. The V1-V3 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene were targeted for bacterial analyses. Variables with approximately normally-distributed residuals and a Shapiro-Wilk statistic of ≥0.85 were analyzed using a mixed model analysis of variance with the GLIMMIX procedure with fixed effects of feed (straw vs. no straw), stocking density (100% vs. 142%), and the interaction of feed × stocking density, and random effects of pen, period, feed × stocking × pen × period. Pen was included as the experimental unit in a given period and the sampling unit as cow. Variables included Shannon's Diversity Index, Faith's phylogenetic diversity index, chao1, observed OTU, and Simpson's evenness E as well as most individual taxa. Data were analyzed in SAS 9.4 utilizing the GLIMMIX procedure to perform mixed model analysis of variance. If data were not normally distributed, a ranked analysis was performed. No differences were observed in α-diversity metrics by fiber or stocking density (P > 0.05). Beta diversity was assessed using weighted and unweighted Unifrac distances in QIIME 1.9.1 and analyzed using ANOSIM. No differences were observed in weighted (P = 0.6660; R = -0.0121) nor unweighted (P = 0.9190; R = -0.0261) metrics and R values suggested similar bacterial communities among treatments. At the phylum level, Tenericutes differed among treatments with an interaction of stocking density by feed (P = 0.0066). At the genus level, several differences were observed by treatment, including Atopobium (P = 0.0129), unidentified members of order RF39 (P = 0.0139), and unidentified members of family Succinivibrionaceae (P = 0.0480). Although no diversity differences were observed, taxa differences may indicate that specific taxa are affected by the treatments, which may, in turn, affect animal production.

The 3xTg-AD mouse has high validity as a model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) because it develops both amyloid beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Human patients with AD typically develop motor deficits, which worsen as the disease progresses, but 3xTg-AD mice have been reported to show enhanced motor abilities. We investigated the motor behaviour phenotype of male and female 3xTg-AD and B6129SF2 wildtype mice on a battery of motor behaviours at 6 months of age. Compared to wildtype mice, the 3xTg-AD mice had enhanced motor performance on the Rotarod, but worse performance on the grid suspension task. In gait analysis 3xTg-AD mice had a longer stride length and made more foot slips on the balance beam than wildtype mice. There was no overall difference in voluntary wheel-running activity between genotypes, but there was a disruption in circadian activity rhythm in 3xTg-AD mice. In some motor tasks, such as the Rotarod and balance beam, females appeared to perform better than males, but this sex differences was accounted for by differences in body weight. Our results indicate that while the 3xTg-AD mice show enhanced performance on the Rotarod, they have poorer performance on other motor behaviour tasks, indicating that their motor behaviour phenotype is more complex than previously reported. The presence of the P301L transgene may explain the enhancement of Rotarod performance but the poorer performance on other motor behaviour tasks may be due to other transgenes.

Which behavioral test is the most sensitive for detecting cognitive deficits in the 3xTg-AD at 6.5 months of age? The 3xTg-AD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has three transgenes (APPswe, PS1M146V, and Tau P301L) which cause the development of amyloid beta plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and cognitive deficits with age. In order to determine which task is the most sensitive in the early detection of cognitive deficits, we compared male and female 3xTg-AD and B6129SF2 wildtype mice at 6.5 months of age on a test battery including spontaneous alternation in the Y-Maze, novel object recognition, spatial memory in the Barnes maze, and cued and contextual fear conditioning. The 3xTg-AD mice had impaired learning and memory in the Barnes maze but performed better than B6129SF2 wildtype mice in the Y-Maze and in contextual fear conditioning. Neither genotype demonstrated a preference in the novel object recognition task nor was there a genotype difference in cued fear conditioning but females performed better than males. From our results we conclude that the 3xTg-AD mice have mild cognitive deficits in spatial learning and memory and that the Barnes maze was the most sensitive test for detecting these cognitive deficits in 6.5-month-old mice.
