RESUMO

Quantitative structural parameters of pyrochlore Nd2Ru2O7, with temperature dependence, have been derived upon fitting XRD and EXAFS data. An anomalous expansion of the lattice parameter and the Ru-O bond length indicates a structural instability at low temperatures; in particular, an increase in the non-thermal term of the mean square fluctuation in the bond length is the evidence for a static disorder of Ru atoms. This static disorder is closely correlated with a decrease in the average Ru-O-Ru bond angle with decreasing temperature, favoring the short-range ferromagnetic coupling in the material. This ferromagnetic coupling formed thus triggered the spin frustration at low temperature when the contradictory constraints of antiferromagnetic interaction act upon the same Ru site in the corner-sharing tetrahedrons of pyrochlore Nd2Ru2O7. This study demonstrates that the spin frustration arising from the competition of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interactions in pyrochlore Nd2Ru2O7 will cause structural instability especially on the atomic scale, which provides a new point of view to help understand its particular magnetic state.

RESUMO

For applications of nanolattices in low-temperature nanoelectronics, the inter-unit space can be filled with superconducting metallic alloys. However, superconductivity under nanoconfinement is expected to be strongly affected by size-effects and other factors. We studied the magnetic properties and structure of the Ga-Sn eutectic alloy within regular nanopores of an opal template, to understand the specifics of the alloy superconductivity. Two superconducting transitions were observed, in contrast to the bulk alloy. The transitions were ascribed to the segregates with the structures of tetragonal tin and a particular gallium polymorph. The superconducting-phase diagram was constructed, which demonstrated crossovers from the positive- to the common negative-curvature of the upper critical-field lines. Hysteresis was found between the susceptibilities obtained at cooling and warming in the applied magnetic field.

RESUMO

Nanolattices can play the role of templates for metals and metallic alloys to produce functional nanocomposites with particular properties affected by nanoconfinement. To imitate the impact of nanoconfinement on the structure of solid eutectic alloys, we filled porous silica glasses with the Ga-In alloy, which is widely used in applications. Small-angle neutron scattering was observed for two nanocomposites, which comprised alloys of close compositions. The results obtained were treated using different approaches: the common Guinier and extended Guinier models, the recently suggested computer simulation method based on the initial formulae for neutron scattering, and ordinary estimates of the scattering hump positions. All of the approaches predicted a similar structure of the confined eutectic alloy. The formation of ellipsoid-like indium-rich segregates was demonstrated.

RESUMO

Spin excitation of an ilmenite FeTiO3 powder sample is measured by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The dynamic magnetic pair-density function DM(r, E) is obtained from the dynamic magnetic structure factor SM(Q, E) by the Fourier transformation. The real space spin dynamics exhibit magnon mode transitions in the spin-spin correlation with increasing energy from no-phase-shift to π-phase-shift. The mode transition is well reproduced by a simulation using the reciprocal space magnon dispersions. This analysis provides a novel opportunity to study the local spin dynamics of various magnetic systems.

RESUMO

Potential applications of nanolattices often require filling their empty space with eutectic metallic alloys. Due to confinement to nanolattices, the structure of phase segregates in eutectic alloys can differ from that in bulk. These problems are poorly understood now. We have used small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to study the segregation in the Ga-In alloy confined to an opal template with the regular pore network, created by a strict regularity of opal constituents in close similarity with nanolattices. We showed that SANS is a powerful tool to reveal the configuration of segregated phases within nanotemplates. The In-rich segregates were found to have specific structural features as small sizes and ordered arrangement.

RESUMO

In a class of frustrated magnets known as spin ice, magnetic monopoles emerge as classical defects and interact via the magnetic Coulomb law. With quantum-mechanical interactions, these magnetic charges are carried by fractionalized bosonic quasi-particles, spinons, which can undergo Bose-Einstein condensation through a first-order transition via the Higgs mechanism. Here, we report evidence of a Higgs transition from a magnetic Coulomb liquid to a ferromagnet in single-crystal Yb(2)Ti(2)O(7). Polarized neutron scattering experiments show that the diffuse [111]-rod scattering and pinch-point features, which develop on cooling are suddenly suppressed below T(C)~0.21 K, where magnetic Bragg peaks and a full depolarization of the neutron spins are observed with thermal hysteresis, indicating a first-order ferromagnetic transition. Our results are explained on the basis of a quantum spin-ice model, whose high-temperature phase is effectively described as a magnetic Coulomb liquid, whereas the ground state shows a nearly collinear ferromagnetism with gapped spin excitations.
