RESUMO

Haumea-one of the four known trans-Neptunian dwarf planets-is a very elongated and rapidly rotating body. In contrast to other dwarf planets, its size, shape, albedo and density are not well constrained. The Centaur Chariklo was the first body other than a giant planet known to have a ring system, and the Centaur Chiron was later found to possess something similar to Chariklo's rings. Here we report observations from multiple Earth-based observatories of Haumea passing in front of a distant star (a multi-chord stellar occultation). Secondary events observed around the main body of Haumea are consistent with the presence of a ring with an opacity of 0.5, width of 70 kilometres and radius of about 2,287 kilometres. The ring is coplanar with both Haumea's equator and the orbit of its satellite Hi'iaka. The radius of the ring places it close to the 3:1 mean-motion resonance with Haumea's spin period-that is, Haumea rotates three times on its axis in the time that a ring particle completes one revolution. The occultation by the main body provides an instantaneous elliptical projected shape with axes of about 1,704 kilometres and 1,138 kilometres. Combined with rotational light curves, the occultation constrains the three-dimensional orientation of Haumea and its triaxial shape, which is inconsistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium. Haumea's largest axis is at least 2,322 kilometres, larger than previously thought, implying an upper limit for its density of 1,885 kilograms per cubic metre and a geometric albedo of 0.51, both smaller than previous estimates. In addition, this estimate of the density of Haumea is closer to that of Pluto than are previous estimates, in line with expectations. No global nitrogen- or methane-dominated atmosphere was detected.

RESUMO

Hitherto, rings have been found exclusively around the four giant planets in the Solar System. Rings are natural laboratories in which to study dynamical processes analogous to those that take place during the formation of planetary systems and galaxies. Their presence also tells us about the origin and evolution of the body they encircle. Here we report observations of a multichord stellar occultation that revealed the presence of a ring system around (10199) Chariklo, which is a Centaur--that is, one of a class of small objects orbiting primarily between Jupiter and Neptune--with an equivalent radius of 124 ± 9 kilometres (ref. 2). There are two dense rings, with respective widths of about 7 and 3 kilometres, optical depths of 0.4 and 0.06, and orbital radii of 391 and 405 kilometres. The present orientation of the ring is consistent with an edge-on geometry in 2008, which provides a simple explanation for the dimming of the Chariklo system between 1997 and 2008, and for the gradual disappearance of ice and other absorption features in its spectrum over the same period. This implies that the rings are partly composed of water ice. They may be the remnants of a debris disk, possibly confined by embedded, kilometre-sized satellites.

RESUMO

Pluto and Eris are icy dwarf planets with nearly identical sizes, comparable densities and similar surface compositions as revealed by spectroscopic studies. Pluto possesses an atmosphere whereas Eris does not; the difference probably arises from their differing distances from the Sun, and explains their different albedos. Makemake is another icy dwarf planet with a spectrum similar to Eris and Pluto, and is currently at a distance to the Sun intermediate between the two. Although Makemake's size (1,420 ± 60 km) and albedo are roughly known, there has been no constraint on its density and there were expectations that it could have a Pluto-like atmosphere. Here we report the results from a stellar occultation by Makemake on 2011 April 23. Our preferred solution that fits the occultation chords corresponds to a body with projected axes of 1,430 ± 9 km (1σ) and 1,502 ± 45 km, implying a V-band geometric albedo p(V) = 0.77 ± 0.03. This albedo is larger than that of Pluto, but smaller than that of Eris. The disappearances and reappearances of the star were abrupt, showing that Makemake has no global Pluto-like atmosphere at an upper limit of 4-12 nanobar (1σ) for the surface pressure, although a localized atmosphere is possible. A density of 1.7 ± 0.3 g cm(-3) is inferred from the data.

RESUMO

Convective storms occur regularly in Saturn's atmosphere. Huge storms known as Great White Spots, which are ten times larger than the regular storms, are rarer and occur about once per Saturnian year (29.5 Earth years). Current models propose that the outbreak of a Great White Spot is due to moist convection induced by water. However, the generation of the global disturbance and its effect on Saturn's permanent winds have hitherto been unconstrained by data, because there was insufficient spatial resolution and temporal sampling to infer the dynamics of Saturn's weather layer (the layer in the troposphere where the cloud forms). Theoretically, it has been suggested that this phenomenon is seasonally controlled. Here we report observations of a storm at northern latitudes in the peak of a weak westward jet during the beginning of northern springtime, in accord with the seasonal cycle but earlier than expected. The storm head moved faster than the jet, was active during the two-month observation period, and triggered a planetary-scale disturbance that circled Saturn but did not significantly alter the ambient zonal winds. Numerical simulations of the phenomenon show that, as on Jupiter, Saturn's winds extend without decay deep down into the weather layer, at least to the water-cloud base at pressures of 10-12 bar, which is much deeper than solar radiation penetrates.

RESUMO

The dwarf planet Eris is a trans-Neptunian object with an orbital eccentricity of 0.44, an inclination of 44 degrees and a surface composition very similar to that of Pluto. It resides at present at 95.7 astronomical units (1 AU is the Earth-Sun distance) from Earth, near its aphelion and more than three times farther than Pluto. Owing to this great distance, measuring its size or detecting a putative atmosphere is difficult. Here we report the observation of a multi-chord stellar occultation by Eris on 6 November 2010 UT. The event is consistent with a spherical shape for Eris, with radius 1,163 ± 6 kilometres, density 2.52 ± 0.05 grams per cm(3) and a high visible geometric albedo, Pv = 0.96(+0.09)(-0.04). No nitrogen, argon or methane atmospheres are detected with surface pressure larger than ∼1 nanobar, about 10,000 times more tenuous than Pluto's present atmosphere. As Pluto's radius is estimated to be between 1,150 and 1,200 kilometres, Eris appears as a Pluto twin, with a bright surface possibly caused by a collapsed atmosphere, owing to its cold environment. We anticipate that this atmosphere may periodically sublimate as Eris approaches its perihelion, at 37.8 astronomical units from the Sun.

RESUMO

Pairs of asteroids sharing similar heliocentric orbits, but not bound together, were found recently. Backward integrations of their orbits indicated that they separated gently with low relative velocities, but did not provide additional insight into their formation mechanism. A previously hypothesized rotational fission process may explain their formation-critical predictions are that the mass ratios are less than about 0.2 and, as the mass ratio approaches this upper limit, the spin period of the larger body becomes long. Here we report photometric observations of a sample of asteroid pairs, revealing that the primaries of pairs with mass ratios much less than 0.2 rotate rapidly, near their critical fission frequency. As the mass ratio approaches 0.2, the primary period grows long. This occurs as the total energy of the system approaches zero, requiring the asteroid pair to extract an increasing fraction of energy from the primary's spin in order to escape. We do not find asteroid pairs with mass ratios larger than 0.2. Rotationally fissioned systems beyond this limit have insufficient energy to disrupt. We conclude that asteroid pairs are formed by the rotational fission of a parent asteroid into a proto-binary system, which subsequently disrupts under its own internal system dynamics soon after formation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Conflicting results have been reported in studies of predictive factors for airway responsiveness to allergens during bronchial challenges. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess determinants of airway responsiveness to 3 different allergens during standardized bronchial challenges. METHODS: Data were collected from asthmatic patients who participated in allergen challenge trials between 2000 and 2006 (cat, n = 37; house dust mite [HDM], n = 35; grass pollen, n = 27). PD20 (provocative dose causing a 20% fall in forced expiratory volume in the first second) methacholine, PD20 allergen, allergen skin test endpoint, allergen-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels, and late asthmatic response were analyzed for each allergen group. RESULTS: During the early asthmatic response, a significant relationship was found between PD20 allergen and PD20 methacholine (P < .01 for cat, HDM, and grass pollen), as well as between PD20 allergen and allergen-specific IgE levels (P < .05 for cat and HDM). No relationship was observed between PD20 allergen and allergen skin test endpoint (P > .05). Late asthmatic response was significantly more frequent after HDM challenge than after cat or grass pollen challenges (57.1% vs16.2% and 33.3%, P < .01). Dual responders during HDM challenges had significantly higher allergen-specific IgE levels (P < .05) and higher nonallergic airway responsiveness (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Nonallergic airway hyperresponsiveness and allergen-specific IgE levels were the main determinants of early and late asthmatic responses. HDM challenges were the most interesting model with regard to the occurrence of late asthmatic response. In contrast to previous publications and to the official statement on standardized challenge testing with sensitizing stimuli, skin sensitivity appears to be a poor predictor of the early asthmatic response.

RESUMO

Pluto and its satellite, Charon (discovered in 1978; ref. 1), appear to form a double planet, rather than a hierarchical planet/satellite couple. Charon is about half Pluto's size and about one-eighth its mass. The precise radii of Pluto and Charon have remained uncertain, leading to large uncertainties on their densities. Although stellar occultations by Charon are in principle a powerful way of measuring its size, they are rare, as the satellite subtends less than 0.3 microradians (0.06 arcsec) on the sky. One occultation (in 1980) yielded a lower limit of 600 km for the satellite's radius, which was later refined to 601.5 km (ref. 4). Here we report observations from a multi-station stellar occultation by Charon, which we use to derive a radius, R(C) = 603.6 +/- 1.4 km (1sigma), and a density of rho = 1.71 +/- 0.08 g cm(-3). This occultation also provides upper limits of 110 and 15 (3sigma) nanobar for an atmosphere around Charon, assuming respectively a pure nitrogen or pure methane atmosphere.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of candidemia, the fungal susceptibility, the first-line therapy and the morality rate over 5 years. Knowing the differences of the yeasts in the candidemia local epidemiology, is essential to obtain information on fungal epidemiology to adapt antifungal strategies. MATERIALS/METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted from January 2014 to December 2018. The susceptibility of the Candida strains were tested for amphotericin B, caspofungin, voriconazole and fluconazole. RESULTS: The 304 strains were isolated from 290 patients (40 patients in 2014, 65 in 2015, 72 in 2016, 62 in 2017 and 51 in 2018). The three most common Candida spp isolated from blood cultures were Candida albicans (44%), Candida glabrata (22%) and Candida parapsilosis (13%). The proportion of non-albicans Candida decreased from 68% in 2014 to 45% in 2018. C. albicans and C. parapsilosis were to the four antifungals tested. As first-line therapy, 60% of patients received caspofungin and 26% fluconazole. There was no significant difference in the mortality between the two arms of patients (, 27% and 21%, p = 0.47 at 30 days respectively). Thirty day all-cause mortality was 31% and it decreased from 2014 (46%) to 2018 (18%). CONCLUSIONS: We report that the absence of antifungal resistance of our C. albicans and C. parapsilosis candidemia suggests possible treatment after MALDI-TOF identification with fluconazole as first-line therapy in our hospital, as soon as possible and while continuing to perform the antifungal test.

RESUMO

Deoxygenation is a major threat to the coastal ocean health as it impacts marine life and key biogeochemical cycles. Understanding its drivers is crucial in the thriving and highly exploited Peru upwelling system, where naturally low-oxygenated subsurface waters form the so-called oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), and a slight vertical shift in its upper limit may have a huge impact. Here we investigate the long-term deoxygenation trends in the upper part of the nearshore OMZ off Peru over the period 1970-2008. We use a unique set of dissolved oxygen in situ observations and several high-resolution regional dynamical-biogeochemical coupled model simulations. Both observation and model present a nearshore deoxygenation above 150 m depth, with a maximum trend of - 10 µmol kg-1 decade1, and a shoaling of the oxycline depth (- 6.4 m decade-1). Model sensitivity analysis shows that the modeled oxycline depth presents a non-significant (+ 0.9 m decade-1) trend when remote forcing is suppressed, while a significant oxycline shoaling (- 3 m decade-1) is obtained when the wind variability is suppressed. This indicates that the nearshore deoxygenation can be attributed to the slowdown of the near-equatorial eastward currents, which transport oxygen-rich waters towards the Peruvian shores. The large uncertainties in the estimation of this ventilation flux and the consequences for more recent and future deoxygenation trends are discussed.

RESUMO

Pluto's tenuous nitrogen atmosphere was first detected by the imprint left on the light curve of a star that was occulted by the planet in 1985 (ref. 1), and studied more extensively during a second occultation event in 1988 (refs 2-6). These events are, however, quite rare and Pluto's atmosphere remains poorly understood, as in particular the planet has not yet been visited by a spacecraft. Here we report data from the first occultations by Pluto since 1988. We find that, during the intervening 14 years, there seems to have been a doubling of the atmospheric pressure, a probable seasonal effect on Pluto.

RESUMO

Ground-based observations of two conspicuous features near the north pole of Saturn, the polar vortex and the hexagonal wave structure, were made from July 1990 to October 1991, 10 years after their discovery. During this period the polar spot drifted in longitude, relative to system III, by -0.0353 degrees per day on average. Superimposed on this mean motion, the spot also underwent short-term rapid excursions in longitude of up to approximately 14 degrees at rates of up to approximately 1 degrees per day. The spot also exhibited irregular variations in its latitude location. A combination of these data together with those obtained by Voyager 1 and 2 in 1980 and 1981 shows that the spot drifted -0.0577 degrees per day for the 11-year interval from 1980 to 1991. The large lifetime of both features indicates that they are insensitive to the strong variations in the seasonal heating of the cloud layers in the upper polar atmosphere.

RESUMO

The activity of comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) was monitored monthly by optical imaging and long-slit spectroscopy of its dust and gas distribution over heliocentric distances of 4.6 to 2.9 astronomical units. The observed band intensities of the NH2 radical and the H2O+ ion cannot be explained by existing models of fluorescence excitation, warranting a reexamination of the corresponding production rates, at least at large heliocentric distances. Comparing the production rate of the CN radical to its proposed parent, HCN, shows no evidence for the need of a major additional source for CN in Hale-Bopp at large heliocentric distances. The dust and CN production rates are consistent with a significant amount of sublimation occurring from icy dust grains surrounding Hale-Bopp.

RESUMO

Persistent seed banks are a key plant regeneration strategy, buffering environmental variation to allow population and species persistence. Understanding seed bank functioning within herb layer dynamics is therefore important. However, rather than assessing emergence from the seed bank in herb layer gaps, most studies evaluate the seed bank functioning via a greenhouse census. We hypothesise that greenhouse data may not reflect seed bank-driven emergence in disturbance gaps due to methodological differences. Failure in detecting (specialist) species may then introduce methodological bias into the ecological interpretation of seed bank functions using greenhouse data. The persistent seed bank was surveyed in 40 semi-natural grassland plots across a fragmented landscape, quantifying seedling emergence in both the greenhouse and in disturbance gaps. Given the suspected interpretational bias, we tested whether each census uncovers similar seed bank responses to fragmentation. Seed bank characteristics were similar between censuses. Census type affected seed bank composition, with >25% of species retrieved better by either census type, dependent on functional traits including seed longevity, production and size. Habitat specialists emerged more in disturbance gaps than in the greenhouse, while the opposite was true for ruderal species. Both censuses uncovered fragmentation-induced seed bank patterns. Low surface area sampling, larger depth of sampling and germination conditions cause underrepresentation of the habitat-specialised part of the persistent seed bank flora during greenhouse censuses. Methodological bias introduced in the recorded seed bank data may consequently have significant implications for the ecological interpretation of seed bank community functions based on greenhouse data.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dolichoectasia of the basilar artery is a characteristic finding of Fabry disease. However, its prevalence, severity, and course have been poorly studied. This study quantitatively evaluated, by MRA, a panel of basilar artery parameters in a large cohort of patients with Fabry disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Basilar artery mean diameter, curved length, "origin-to-end" linear distance (linear length), and tortuosity index ([curved length ÷ linear length] - 1) were retrospectively measured on 1.5T MRA studies of 110 patients with Fabry disease (mean age, 39.4 ± 18.6 years; 40 males) and 108 control patients (mean age, 42.0 ± 18.2 years; 40 males). RESULTS: Patients with Fabry disease had increased basilar artery mean diameter (P < .001) and basilar artery linear length (P = .02) compared with control patients. Basilar artery curved length and tortuosity index correlated with age in both groups (P < .001), whereas basilar artery linear length correlated with age only in patients with Fabry disease (P = .002). Patients with Fabry disease showed a basilar artery curved length mean increase of 4.2% (9.7% in male patients with Fabry disease versus male control patients), whereas the basilar artery mean diameter had a mean increase of 12.4% (14.3% in male patients with Fabry disease versus male control patients). Male patients with Fabry disease had increased basilar artery mean diameter, curved length, and tortuosity index compared with female patients with Fabry disease (P = .04, P = .02, and P < .001, respectively) and male control patients (P < .001, P = .01, and P = .006, respectively). Female patients with Fabry disease demonstrated an age-dependent increase of basilar artery mean diameter that became significant (P < .001) compared with female control patients above the age of 45 years. CONCLUSIONS: The basilar artery of patients with FD is subjected to major remodeling that differs according to age and sex, thus providing interesting clues about the pathophysiology of cerebral vessels in Fabry disease.

RESUMO

Nanoplasmonics is a growing field of optical condensed matter science dedicated to optical phenomena at the nanoscale level in metal systems. Extensive research on noble metallic nanoparticles (NPs) has emerged within the last two decades due to their ability to keep the optical energy concentrated in the vicinity of NPs, in particular, the ability to create optical near-field enhancement followed by heat generation. We have exploited these properties in order to induce a localised "click" reaction in the vicinity of gold nanostructures under unfavourable experimental conditions. We demonstrate that this reaction can be controlled by the plasmonic properties of the nanostructures and we propose two physical mechanisms to interpret the observed plasmonic tuning of the "click" chemistry.

RESUMO

Critical illness neuromuscular abnormalities (CINMA) are found in 25 percent of ITU patients who recover consciousness and are characterized by a bilateral and symmetric weakness that involves the four limbs but spares the facial muscles. Electrophysiological testing shows an axonal sensory motor polyneuropathy and/or myopathy. The main risk factors of CINMA are prolonged durations of multiple organ failure and mechanical ventilation, use of corticosteroids and hyperglycaemia. CINMA contribute also to increase the duration of mechanical ventilation, this effect being mediated by diaphragm weakness. The median duration of limb weakness is 21 days, although it can exceed several months in some patients. Few preventive measures have been assessed. Whether the benefit of strict blood glucose control in ITU patients recovering from heart surgery on CINMA incidence can be extended to medical ICU patients needs to be determined.

RESUMO

This paper describes several application potentials with a recently developed model for predicting the synthetic organic chemical (SOC) removal by powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption during ultrafiltration (UF) and discusses the removal mechanism. The model was successfully applied, without any modification, to dead-end mode operation as well as to cross-flow mode operation, validating the assumption of the internal diffusion control mechanism and the continuously-stirred-tank-reactor (CSTR) concept. Even when UF was operated in a cross-flow mode, PAC added was re-circulating in suspension for only a short time. Then, solute uptake took place mostly by PAC immobilized in membrane tubes not only for dead-end operation but also for cross-flow operation. Therefore, cross-flow operation did not have any advantage regarding the SOC mass transfer on PAC in UF loop over dead-end operation. The model simulation implied that pulse PAC addition at the beginning of filtration cycle resulted better SOC removal than continuous PAC addition. However, for the pulse PAC addition mode, the model predicted somewhat lower effluent SOC concentration than the observed values, and the benefit of pulse PAC application in terms of reducing SOC over its continuous dosage was not confirmed. Longer detention time of PAC dosed in a pulse than continuously dosed PAC could possibly further decrease internal diffusivity.

RESUMO

A total of 647 faecal egg counts and 53 necropsies were performed on sheep and goats originating from three sites of a Sahelian region of Mauritania (Gorgol) over a period of 2 years (1990-1992). Haemonchus contortus, Oesophagostomum columbianum and Stilesia globipunctata were the most prevalent species. The seasonal pattern was characterized by long survival of adults and high percentages of arrested fourth-stage larvae in the dry season, suggesting that two different strategies were used to survive from one rainy season to the next. Sheep and goats were equally infected, except for Stilesia globipunctata, which was found more often in sheep. The influence of age was limited, although kids and lambs born in the beginning of the dry season did not become infected until their first grazing in the rainy season.
