RESUMO

By using the worldline Monte Carlo technique, matrix product state, and a variational approach à la Feynman, we investigate the equilibrium properties and relaxation features of the dissipative quantum Rabi model, where a two level system is coupled to a linear harmonic oscillator embedded in a viscous fluid. We show that, in the Ohmic regime, a Beretzinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition occurs by varying the coupling strength between the two level system and the oscillator. This is a nonperturbative result, occurring even for extremely low dissipation magnitude. By using state-of-the-art theoretical methods, we unveil the features of the relaxation towards the thermodynamic equilibrium, pointing out the signatures of quantum phase transition both in the time and frequency domains. We prove that, for low and moderate values of the dissipation, the quantum phase transition occurs in the deep strong coupling regime. We propose to realize this model by coupling a flux qubit and a damped LC oscillator.

RESUMO

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c^{2} mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c^{2} dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12 306±184) kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40 MeV/c^{2}. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below 3.6 GeV/c^{2}.

RESUMO

We present a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/c^{2} masses whose interactions have final state electrons using the DarkSide-50 experiment's (12 306±184) kg d low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. By analyzing the ionization signals, we exclude new parameter space for the dark matter-electron cross section σ[over ¯]_{e}, the axioelectric coupling constant g_{Ae}, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter κ. We also set the first dark matter direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle |U_{e4}|^{2} for keV/c^{2} sterile neutrinos.

RESUMO

While the world's economies avoid the COVID-19 pandemic blockade, there is an urgent need for technologies aimed at reducing the transmission of COVID-19 in confined spaces such as hospital environments. Although the cleaning and disinfection procedures now have rather complex and sophisticated weapons, they do not seem to be sufficient to continuously maintain low levels of environmental microbiological contamination. This result can now be achieved through the cross-use, in space and time, of improved, more efficient and effective technologies. This result can now be achieved through the cross-use, in space and time, of improved technologies. This work highlights the possibility of crossing and cooperation of different disinfection techniques, such as to keep the microbial and viral load low over time.

RESUMO

In condensed matter physics many features can be understood in terms of their topological properties. Here we report evidence of a topological quantum transition driven by the charge-phonon coupling in the spinless Haldane model on a honeycomb lattice, a well-known prototypical model of the Chern insulator. Starting from parameters describing the topological phase in the bare Haldane model, we show that increasing the strength of the charge lattice coupling drives the system towards a trivial insulator. The average number of fermions in the Dirac point, characterized by the lowest gap, exhibits a finite discontinuity at the transition point and can be used as a direct indicator of the topological quantum transition. Numerical simulations show, also, that the renormalized phonon propagator exhibits a two peak structure across the quantum transition, whereas, in the absence of the mass term in the bare Haldane model, there is indication of a complete softening of the effective vibrational mode, signaling a charge density wave instability.

RESUMO

We present the results of a search for dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the mass range below 20 GeV/c^{2} using a target of low-radioactivity argon with a 6786.0 kg d exposure. The data were obtained using the DarkSide-50 apparatus at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The analysis is based on the ionization signal, for which the DarkSide-50 time projection chamber is fully efficient at 0.1 keVee. The observed rate in the detector at 0.5 keVee is about 1.5 event/keVee/kg/d and is almost entirely accounted for by known background sources. We obtain a 90% C.L. exclusion limit above 1.8 GeV/c^{2} for the spin-independent cross section of dark matter WIMPs on nucleons, extending the exclusion region for dark matter below previous limits in the range 1.8-6 GeV/c^{2}.

RESUMO

We present new constraints on sub-GeV dark-matter particles scattering off electrons based on 6780.0 kg d of data collected with the DarkSide-50 dual-phase argon time projection chamber. This analysis uses electroluminescence signals due to ionized electrons extracted from the liquid argon target. The detector has a very high trigger probability for these signals, allowing for an analysis threshold of three extracted electrons, or approximately 0.05 keVee. We calculate the expected recoil spectra for dark matter-electron scattering in argon and, under the assumption of momentum-independent scattering, improve upon existing limits from XENON10 for dark-matter particles with masses between 30 and 100 MeV/c^{2}.

RESUMO

We present the first unbiased results for the mobility µ of a one-dimensional Holstein polaron obtained by numerical analytic continuation combined with diagrammatic and worldline Monte Carlo methods in the thermodynamic limit. We have identified for the first time several distinct regimes in the λ-T plane including a band conduction region, incoherent metallic region, an activated hopping region, and a high-temperature saturation region. We observe that although mobilities and mean free paths at different values of λ differ by many orders of magnitude at small temperatures, their values at T larger than the bandwidth become very close to each other.

RESUMO

The transport properties at finite temperature of crystalline organic semiconductors are investigated, within the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, by combining an exact diagonalization technique, Monte Carlo approaches, and a maximum entropy method. The temperature-dependent mobility data measured in single crystals of rubrene are successfully reproduced: a crossover from super- to subdiffusive motion occurs in the range 150≤T≤200 K, where the mean free path becomes of the order of the lattice parameter and strong memory effects start to appear. We provide an effective model, which can successfully explain features of the absorption spectra at low frequencies. The observed response to slowly varying electric field is interpreted by means of a simple model where the interaction between the charge carrier and lattice polarization modes is simulated by a harmonic interaction between a fictitious particle and an electron embedded in a viscous fluid.

RESUMO

The spectral response and physical features of the 2D Hubbard-Holstein model are calculated both in equilibrium at zero and low chemical dopings, and after an ultrashort powerful light pulse, in undoped systems. At equilibrium and at strong charge-lattice couplings, the optical conductivity reveals a three-peak structure in agreement with experimental observations. After an ultrashort pulse and at nonzero electron-phonon interaction, phonon and spin subsystems oscillate with the phonon period T(ph)≈80 fs. The decay time of the phonon oscillations is about 150-200 fs, similar to the relaxation time of the charge system. We propose a criterion for observing these oscillations in high T(c) compounds: the time span of the pump light pulse τ(pump) has to be shorter than the phonon oscillation period T(ph).

RESUMO

Nanomaterials engineered as nanotubes, quantum-dots, dendrimers or hybrid systems are increasing themselves by an annual mean rate of 4-5%, with rapid spread in various sectors e.g. biomedical. The liposolubility through membranes and the hydrosolubility through active transport do not interfere with nanoparticles below a certain size, which without activation processes and carrier, transport through thanks to capillaries, to intracellular pores (60 - 70 nm) and fissures (4 - 6 nm) in the same membranes. Conversely, in the processes of pinocytosis/endocytosis energy and carrier are required and endocytosis clathrin/caveolae mediated,is respectively for nanoparticles higher or lower than 200 nm. In occupational hazard nanostructures ranging from a few nm up to 100 - 150 nm have the ability to affect several organs through inhalation, intestinal, parental or dermal route of access. New toxicological aspects are associated to the capacity of nanomaterials of being more or less biocompatible or hydrosoluble, of creating bonds with proteins or to determine accumulation in the cells due to an incomplete elimination process.

RESUMO

Spontaneous rectus sheath hematoma (SRSH) is an uncommon cause of acute abdominal pain characterized by bleeding within the rectus sheath; it is a benign condition and, in most cases, it is treated conservatively. Bleeding of the abdominal wall is an unusual condition that is quite challenging to identify promptly and can be easily overlooked during a routine physical examination. In daily practice, anticoagulant therapy is one of the main risk factors for hemorrhagic events. In this respect, we report a rare case of spontaneous hematoma of the abdominal wall (diagnosed and monitored through an ultrasound examination) that arose after sneezing in a patient receiving anticoagulant treatment.

RESUMO

We study a single polaron in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model using four different techniques (three numerical and one analytical). Polarons show a smooth crossover from weak to strong coupling, as a function of the electron-phonon coupling strength λ, in all models where this coupling depends only on phonon momentum q. In the SSH model the coupling also depends on the electron momentum k; we find it has a sharp transition, at a critical coupling strength λ(c), between states with zero and nonzero momentum of the ground state. All other properties of the polaron are also singular at λ=λ(c). This result is representative of all polarons with coupling depending on k and q, and will have important experimental consequences (e.g., in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and conductivity experiments).

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Radon and its decay products may cause substantial health damage after long-term exposure. The aim of the study was to perform a spatial analysis of radon concentration in the Salento peninsula, province of Lecce (South-eastern Italy) in order to better characterize possible risk for human health, with specific focus on lung cancer. METHODS: Based on previous radon monitoring campaigns carried out in 2006 on behalf of the Local Health Authority (ASL Lecce) involving 419 schools and through the application of kriging estimation method, a radon risk map was obtained for the province of Lecce, in order to determine if areas with higher radon concentrations were overlapping with those characterized by the highest pulmonary cancer incidence and mortality rates. RESULTS: According to our data, areas at higher radon concentrations seem to overlap with those characterized by the highest pulmonary cancer mortality and incidence rates, thus indicating that human exposure to radon could possibly enhance other individual or environmental pro-carcinogenic risk factors (i.e. cigarette smoking, air pollution and other exposures). CONCLUSIONS: The radon risk should be further assessed in the evaluation of the causes resulting in higher mortality and incidence rates for pulmonary cancer in Salento area vs Italian average national data. For these reasons, ASL Lecce in cooperation with ARPA Puglia and CNR-IFC has included the monitoring of individual indoor radon concentrations in the protocol of PROTOS case-control Study, aimed at investigating the role of different personal and environmental risk factors for lung cancer in Salento.

RESUMO

Adiabatic quantum computation (AQC) is a promising counterpart of universal quantum computation, based on the key concept of quantum annealing (QA). QA is claimed to be at the basis of commercial quantum computers and benefits from the fact that the detrimental role of decoherence and dephasing seems to have poor impact on the annealing towards the ground state. While many papers show interesting optimization results with a sizable number of qubits, a clear evidence of a full quantum coherent behavior during the whole annealing procedure is still lacking. In this paper we show that quantum non-demolition (weak) measurements of Leggett Garg inequalities can be used to efficiently assess the quantumness of the QA procedure. Numerical simulations based on a weak coupling Lindblad approach are compared with classical Langevin simulations to support our statements.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Scientific research on rheumatic diseases was often focused on the link between psychological features and disease. Depression and anxiety are frequently observed with an higher incidence among rheumatic patients in comparison to general population. In autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, an important role for psychiatric symptoms could be played by the alteration of cytokines levels. In the chronic-degenerative diseases, psychological factors such as stress and depression, can be involved in perception of pain. OBJECTIVE: We aimed at evaluating in a sample of 50 patients (25 with rheumatoid arthritis and 25 with osteoarthritis) levels of pain, anxiety and depression. METHODS: We evaluated two group of patients with rheumatic disease, group A (25 with Rheumatoid Arthritis, mean age = 45.1; DS =15.24) and group B (25 with osteoarthritis, mean age = 54.3; DS =14.74) by clinic examination and with the following tests, SF-MPQ, HAQ, HAM-A, HAM-D. RESULTS: We found in group A higher levels of depression and anxiety but lower levels of pain, which was more expressed in group B. CONCLUSION: Depression and anxiety were observed with an higher prevalence in patients with autoimmune disease, whereas pain was stronger in patients with osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease. We could explain this phenomenon considering the aetiopathology of the two conditions. As regard to autoimmune disorders, these symptoms may reflect the direct effect of cytokines on the central nervous system. As far as it concerns chronic-degenerative diseases, anxiety and depression are usually considered "reactive" to pain, not "constitutive".

RESUMO

Second-order continuous phase transitions are characterized by symmetry breaking with order parameters. Topological orders of electrons, characterized by the topological index defined in momentum space, provide a distinct perspective for phase transitions, which are categorized as quantum phase transitions not being accompanied by symmetry breaking. However, there are still limited observations of counterparts in real space. Here we show a real-space topological phase transition in a chiral magnet MnGe, hosting a periodic array of hedgehog and antihedgehog topological spin singularities. This transition is driven by the pair annihilation of the hedgehogs and antihedgehogs acting as monopoles and antimonopoles of the emergent electromagnetic field. Observed anomalies in the magnetoresistivity and phonon softening are consistent with the theoretical prediction of critical phenomena associated with enhanced fluctuations of emergent field near the transition. This finding reveals a vital role of topology of the spins in strongly correlated systems.

RESUMO

The involvement of dopamine (DA) and nitric oxide (NO) in the process of non-selective attention (NSA) to environmental stimuli has been investigated in the juvenile Spontaneously Hypertensive rat (SHR). To this aim the frequency and duration of rearing episodes in a novelty situation, which is thought to monitor NSA, have been measured in male SHR and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) control rats following subchronic treatment with methylphenidate (MP; 3 mg/kg) or the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-Nitro-arginine-methylester (L-NAME; 1 mg/kg) or vehicle daily for two weeks. Different groups were tested at 0.5 h or 24 h after the last injection in a Làt-maze. Tests were repeated twice at a 24 h interval and lasted 10 min each. Upon first exposure, there was a differential drug effect only in the SHR. In fact, MP and L-NAME yielded a shift to the left and to the right, i.e. towards episodes of lower or higher duration, respectively. This shift was more pronounced in the group tested 0.5 h after the last injection. In contrast, both drugs produced a significant lengthening of the rearing episodes in the SHR only in comparison with the vehicle-treated rats over days of testing. Therefore both MP and L-NAME appear to shear a similar effect on non-selective attention, although the effect of L-NAME is somewhat paradoxical. The latter is likely to be due to increased arginine selective uptake due to negative feedback with the NO production. The consequent increased arginine availability displaces the NOS inhibitor, thus leading to increased NO production. In conclusion, dopamine and nitric oxide play a role in non-selective attention by synaptic and extrasynaptic mechanisms, respectively, in a rat model of hyperactivity and attention-deficits.

RESUMO

This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study investigated the therapeutic effects of a single dose of doxofylline, a methylxanthine derivative, in 10 patients aged 26-79 years. All patients had acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive airways disease partially reversible with salbutamol inhaler. Doxofylline was administered intravenously at a dose of 200 mg over 15 min on two different occasions separated by at least 24 h. Doxofylline increased forced expiratory volume in the first second of expiration compared with baseline as follows: +20% after 2 h (P less than 0.01); +31% after 4 h (P less than 0.01); and +13% after 6 h (NS). Changes produced by placebo at these times were -4.4%, -14% and -5% (all NS). The average differences between the groups were significant at all observation times. At the end of the observation period eight out of 10 patients given doxofylline and one out of 10 patients given placebo had improved clinically according to the patients' own opinion. Clinical tolerability of doxofylline proved to be good since no signs of local or general side-effects were observed in any of the patients treated.
