RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To summarize the clinical data of 7 children with activated phosphoinositide 3-kinase delta syndrome (APDS) and enhance understanding of the disease. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data of 7 APDS children admitted to Hunan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2019 to August 2023. RESULTS: Among the 7 children (4 males, 3 females), the median age of onset was 30 months, and the median age at diagnosis was 101 months. Recurrent respiratory tract infections, hepatosplenomegaly, and multiple lymphadenopathy were observed in all 7 cases. Sepsis was observed in 5 cases, otitis media and multiple caries were observed in 3 cases, and diarrhea and joint pain were observed in 2 cases. Lymphoma and systemic lupus erythematosus were observed in 1 case each. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy was performed in 4 cases, revealing scattered nodular protrusions in the bronchial lumen. The most common respiratory pathogen was Streptococcus pneumoniae (4 cases). Six patients had a p.E1021K missense mutation, and one had a p.434-475del splice site mutation. CONCLUSIONS: p.E1021K is the most common mutation site in APDS children. Children who present with one or more of the following symptoms: recurrent respiratory tract infections, hepatosplenomegaly, multiple lymphadenopathy, otitis media, and caries, and exhibit scattered nodular protrusions on fiberoptic bronchoscopy, should be vigilant for APDS. RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) is the most common sequelae in children with adenovirus pneumonia (ADVP). However, there are few studies on the risk factors for PIBO occurrence. This study aims to investigate the risk factors for PIBO in pediatric patients with severe ADVP, especially after invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), as well as to build a nomogram prediction model. METHODS: The clinical data, laboratory and imaging features, and treatment of 863 children with ADVP under 3 years old who were admitted to our hospital from January to December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 66 children with severe ADVP received IMV treatment. The situation and the influencing factors of PIBO in children with severe ADVP were explored, and a nomogram prediction model was constructed. RESULTS: Among the 863 cases of ADVP, 46 cases (5.33%) developed PIBO. Duration of fever, IMV, complications, and neutrophil percentage were independent risk factors for PIBO in children with ADVP. Among the 66 patients with ADVP who underwent IMV, 33 patients (50.0%) developed PIBO. Gender, duration of fever, adenovirus (ADV) load, and mixed fungal coinfections were independent risk factors for PIBO. In the nomogram prediction model analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.857; in addition, Hosmer‒Lemeshow (H-L) detection reflected good alignment (χ2 = 68.75, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: A nomogram prediction model, which can be utilized to predict PIBO occurrence in pediatric patients with ADVP after IMV at an early time period, was successfully built.

RESUMO

A boy, aged 11 years, was admitted due to intermittent fever for 15 days, cough for 10 days, and "hemoptysis" for 7 days. The boy had fever and cough with left neck pain 15 days ago, and antibiotic treatment was effective. During the course of disease, the boy developed massive "hemoptysis" which caused shock. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a left pyriform sinus fistula with continuous bleeding. In combination with neck and vascular imaging examination results, the boy was diagnosed with internal jugular vein injury and thrombosis due to congenital pyriform sinus fistula infection and neck abscess. The boy was improved after treatment with temperature-controlled radiofrequency ablation for the closure of pyriform sinus fistula, and no recurrence was observed during the follow-up for one year and six months. No reports of massive hemorrhage and shock due to pyriform sinus fistula infection were found in the searched literature, and this article summarizes the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of this boy, so as to provide a reference for the early diagnosis of such disease and the prevention and treatment of its complications.

RESUMO

Man-made multi-level ditches system is designed to irrigate, drain and collect runoff from surrounding fields. It is not only the conduit of water and field carbon, but also the linear-like wetland with complex carbon cycling. However, the contribution of ditches system to CO2 and CH4 emission has rarely been assessed. To understand the emission pattern of CO2 and CH4 from ditches, this study investigated the emission fluxes of CO2 and CH4 in a three-level ditches system in Chengdu Plain, China. The results showed that the emission of CO2 and CH4 ranged from 70.38 to 950.40 mg C m-2 h-1 and 6.51-74.99 mg C m-2 h-1, respectively, and was higher in spring and summer than other seasons in all ditches (P < 0.05). On the other hand, the emission of CO2 and CH4 increased along with the decreasing ditches size. Besides, it is found that the precipitation, water table depth and water DO concentration might contribute to the emission of CO2, while CH4 was possibly influenced by precipitation, water table depth, temperature, water DO and DOC concentration. Moreover, it is suggested that terrestrial external input and in-situ metabolism might be the main sources of C emission, and in-situ source might largely contribute to CH4 emission. To reduce the C emission, it is necessary to improve fertilization and irrigation methods, limit soil pollutants transferring into ditches, and frequently dredge sediments in future.

RESUMO

Waste mushroom residues are often returned to fields as organic amendments. Here, we estimated the effects of the continuous applications of different spent mushroom substrates for 2 years on crop yields, soil nutrients, and heavy metals in paddy fields. The study comprised seven treatments: no fertilization (CK) and mineral NPK fertilizer (CF), as well as NPK fertilizer combined with Enoki mushroom residue (EMR50), Oyster mushroom residue (OMR50), Auricularia polytricha mushroom residue (APR50), Shiitake mushroom residue (SMR50), and Agaricus bisporus residue (ABR50). The grain yield was highest under the APR50 treatment. The short-term application of waste mushroom residue significantly increased SOC, TN, TP, and TK content relative to the CK treatment. The SOC, TP, and TK were highest under ABR50. Both total Cr and Cd contents were highest under CF treatment. The highest cumulative ecological risk was observed under OMR50 treatment. In addition, crop yield was positively correlated with SOC, TN, TP, and TP. Our results highlight that further research and innovation are needed to optimize the benefits and overcome the challenges of mushroom residue application.

RESUMO

Grazing exclusion (GE) is considered an effective strategy for restoring the degradation of overgrazed grasslands on the global scale. Soil microbial diversity plays a crucial role in supporting multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality) in grassland ecosystems. However, the impact of grazing exclusion on soil microbial diversity remains uncertain. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis using a dataset comprising 246 paired observations from 46 peer-reviewed papers to estimate how GE affects microbial diversity and how these effects vary with climatic regions, grassland types, and GE duration ranging from 1 to 64 years. Meanwhile, we explored the relationship between microbial diversity and its functionality under grazing exclusion. Overall, grazing exclusion significantly increased microbial Shannon (1.9%) and microbial richness (4.9%) compared to grazing group. For microbial groups, GE significantly increased fungal richness (8.6%) and bacterial richness (5.3%), but decreased specific microbial richness (-11.9%). The responses of microbial Shannon to GE varied among climatic regions, grassland types, and GE duration. Specifically, GE increased microbial diversity in in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid regions, but decreased it in humid regions. Moreover, GE significantly increased microbial Shannon in semidesert grasslands (5.9%) and alpine grasslands (3.0%), but not in temperate grasslands. Long-term (>20 year) GE had greater effects on microbial diversity (8.0% for Shannon and 6.7% for richness) compared to short-term (<10 year) GE (-0.8% and 2.4%). Furthermore, grazing exclusion significantly increased multifunctionality, and both microbial and plant Shannon positively correlated with multifunctionality. Overall, our findings emphasize the importance of considering climate, GE duration, and grassland type for biodiversity conservation and sustainable grassland ecosystem functions.

RESUMO

Soil microbial characteristics are considered to be an index for soil quality evaluation. It is generally believed that organic amendments replacing chemical fertilizers have positive effects on changing microbial activity and community structure. However, their effects on different agro-ecosystems on a global scale and their differences in different environmental conditions and experimental durations are unclear. This study performed a meta-analysis based on 94 studies with 204 observations to evaluate the overall effects and their differences in different experimental conditions and duration. The results indicated that compared to chemical fertilizer, organic amendments significantly increased total microbial biomass, bacterial biomass, fungal biomass, Gram-positive bacterial biomass and Gram-negative bacterial biomass, and had no effect on the ratio of fungi to bacteria and ratio of Gram-positive bacteria to Gram-negative bacteria. Meanwhile, land use type, mean annual precipitation and soil initial pH are essential factors affecting microbial activity response. Organic-amendment-induced shifts in microbial biomass can be predominantly explained by soil C and nutrient availability changes. Additionally, we observed positive relationships between microbial functionality and microbial biomass, suggesting that organic-amendment-induced changes in microbial activities improved soil microbial functionality.

RESUMO

Application of organic fertilizers or their combination with chemical fertilizers is a feasible practice for improving soil fertility and reducing soil degradation in agroecosystems, and these regulations are mainly mediated though soil microbial communities. Despite bacteria ranking among the most abundant and diverse groups of soil microorganisms, the effects of long-term organic fertilization (OF) and chemical-organic fertilization (COF) on soil bacterial diversity and community composition remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis and demonstrated that OF had no significant effect on bacterial alpha diversity. Application of chemical fertilizer and crop residue significantly decreased bacterial Richness index. Both OF and COF significantly altered bacterial community structure, with these changes being predominately attributed to shifts in soil pH. For bacterial phyla, both OF and COF significantly increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, suggesting that OF and COF may cause the enrichment of copiotrophic taxa. In addition, COF significantly increased the relative abundance of Gammaproteobacteria but decreased the relative abundance of Acidobacteria. Overall, our results suggest that organic and chemical-organic fertilization can effectively maintain bacterial diversity and enhance soil fertility in agroecosystems, and the alteration of soil bacterial community structure is closely intertwined with soil pH.

RESUMO

Currently, many spent mushroom substrates (SMS) are produced each year, which have the great potential to replace partial chemical fertilizer in agricultural production due to the high content of organic matter in SMS. However, how the replacement of chemical fertilizer by different SMS affected soil nutrients and contamination was less reported. Therefore, this study applied Enoki mushroom substrates (EMR), Agaricus bisporus substrates (ABR), or Auricularia auricula substrates (AAR) to replace 25 % chemical fertilizers (based on N fertilizer) with understanding the role of SMS replacement in affecting soil nutrients, heavy metals, and microbial community via the short-term field study, respectively. Compared to chemical fertilizer (CF), the contents of organic matter (OM), total P (TP), and K (TK) in SMS replaced soils were significantly increased by 1.96-4.22, 0.08-0.12, and 0.03-0.53 g kg-1, respectively. Among three SMS replacements, AAR demonstrated the highest increment of soil nutrients. On the other hand, EMR and ABR replacements reduced the contents of total and acid-soluble Cd, Pb, and As by 7.94-30.32 % and 0-31.61 % in soils relative to CF, respectively. Unlike EMR and ABR, AAR reduced 11.08-16.04 % of total Cd, Pb, and As but increased 62.58 % acid-soluble As in soils. Furthermore, it was found that all SMS replacements increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, while ABR also increased the relative abundance of Actinobacteria in soils compared to CF. Besides, EMR and ABR replacements increased the relative abundance of Mortierellomycota relative to CF. Finally, it can be known that partial replacement of chemical fertilizer by SMS could elevate soil nutrients (especially AAR) and reduce heavy metals (especially EMR), which further improved microbial diversity and community composition. This study provides information on applying SMS to replace partial chemical fertilizer to elevate nutrients and reduce heavy metals contamination.

RESUMO

Background: The study aimed to explore risk factors for bronchial mucus plugs (BMP) formation in children with adenovirus (AdV) pneumonia. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on children with AdV pneumonia who underwent bronchoscopy from January 2019 to December 2019. Children were divided into the BMP group and the control group, depending on whether BMP was formed or not. The clinical information and treatment proposals of the two groups of children were counted and analyzed via multiple logistic regression analysis, ROC curve analysis, and correlation analysis. Results: Among 453 patients with AdV pneumonia, 185 (40.84%) were in the BMP group. Among all the cases, there were 188 patients with a single AdV infection, including 64 (34.04%) in the BMP group and 124 (65.96%) in the control group. The incidence of dyspnea, poor spirits, mixed infections, and other symptoms in the BMP group was higher than in the control group. Children in the BMP group had a longer heat range. C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer (DD), and AdV load levels were higher in the MBP group. AdV load, Mycoplasma coinfection, DD, heat range, and LDH were independent risk factors for BMP, among which AdV load was the most significant (AUC = 0.819). AdV load was positively correlated with other risk factors, respectively. AdV load and heat range were independent risk factors for BMP patients with a single AdV infection. Conclusion: AdV load might have important clinical value in predicting BMP development in AdV pneumonia.

RESUMO

Waste drill cuttings (WDCs), produced during gas and oil drilling consisting of 80% rock cuttings and 20% drilling muds, are an increasingly potent source of environmental pollution. We studied the efficiency of bioaugmentation and phytoremediation to remediate WDCs in an experiment where WDCs were incubated in a greenhouse for 120 days with and without black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) plant and with or without bacterial and fungal consortium inoculant. The pollutant removal rates were highest in inoculated and planted treatment, followed by inoculated treatment and planted treatment. The small decrease in contaminant level in the control treatment suggested that indigenous microorganisms in WDCs had little pollutant degradation capability. In the inoculated and planted treatments, after 120 days, the germination rate of red clover seeds was on the same level as in the natural soil, showing a marked decrease in the ecotoxicity of WDC. Both the bacterial and fungal richness and bacterial diversity increased in all the treatments over time, whereas fungal diversity increased only in the not-inoculated treatments. The activity of laccase enzyme played a key role in the bioremediation process. The enzyme activities were mostly governed by inoculated consortium and soil bacterial community, and black locust affected the bioremediation mainly through its effect on N content that further affected bacterial and fungal communities.

RESUMO

Multi-level ditch area is a major component of the hydrographic net of plain area, China. Given the high concentration of nitrogen (N) in the surface water and vigorous biogeochemical interactions, ditch is likely to be the hot spots of N2O emission. However, N2O emission flux and emission factor (EF5r) of multi-level ditches have not been determined. To address this knowledge gap, a 1-year field work in three ditches with different levels in Chengdu Plain was conducted. It is found that the annual flux of N2O emission and EF5r was higher in the lateral (0.0020 and 83.94 µg m-2 h-1) and field ditches (0.0019 and 110.75 µg m-2 h-1) than in the branch ditch (0.0016 and 46.38 µg m-2 h-1, P < 0.05). It is found that parameters of groundwater level, discharge, precipitation, and NH4+ were the primary factors, and these parameters can model the N2O flux well. Furthermore, the content of NH4+ in the surface water of ditches presented better correlation with the emission of N2O than the content of NO3-. Therefore, controlling NH4+ emission and lessening fertilizer usage in summer may be key solutions for indirect reduction of N2O in Chengdu Plain.

RESUMO

Understanding of the spatial and temporal variation of the flux of atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition is essential for assessment of its impact on ecosystems. However, little attention has been paid to the variability of N deposition across urban-intensive agricultural-rural transects. A continuous 2-year observational study (from January 2015 to December 2016) was conducted to determine wet N deposition across the urban-intensive agricultural-rural transect of a small urban area in southwest China. Significantly spatial and temporal variations were found in the research area. Along the urban-intensive agricultural-rural transect, the TN and NH4+-N deposition first increased and then decreased, and the NO3--N and dissolved organic N (DON) deposition decreased continuously. Wet N deposition was mainly affected by the districts of agro-facilities, roads and build up lands. Wet NH4+-N deposition had non-seasonal emission sources including industrial emissions and urban excretory wastes in urban districts and seasonal emission sources such as fertilizer and manure volatilization in the other districts. However, wet NO3--N deposition had seasonal emission sources such as industrial emissions and fireworks in urban district and non-seasonal emission sources such as transportation in the other districts. Deposition of DON was likely to have had similar sources to NO3--N deposition in rural district, and high-temperature-dependent sources in urban and intensive agricultural districts. Considering the annual wet TN deposition in the intensive agricultural district was about 11.1% of the annual N fertilizer input, N fertilizer rates of crops should be reduced in this region to avoid the excessive application, and the risk of N emissions to the environment.

RESUMO

In order to study the flux characteristics of CH4, CO2 and N2O in different ditches and their influencing factors, three types of ditches (an agricultural ditch, agricultural-living compound ditch, and living ditch) were monitored once a month from March 2014 to February 2015 using static floating chambers in the Chengdu Plain. The results showed that:① Affected by human activities, CO2, CH4, and N2O fluxes were high in ditches and ranged from -2.26-1504.40 mg·(m2·h)-1, 0.69-40.00 mg·(m2·h)-1, and -2.27-70.35 µg·(m2·h)-1,respectively. All are higher in summer compared to autumn and spring, and are lowest in winter. ② The flux of CO2 in agricultural-living compound ditches was significantly higher than that in agricultural ditches and living ditches (P<0.05), and the fluxes of CH4 and N2O in living ditches were significantly higher than those in agricultural ditches and agricultural-living compound ditches (P<0.05). ③ Water temperature and rainfall were the main environmental factors affecting CO2, CH4, and N2O fluxes, and DO (dissolved oxygen) and TN (total nitrogen) were the main environmental factors affecting CO2 and N2O fluxes. NH4+-N (ammonium nitrogen) and DO were the main water quality parameters affecting the CH4 flux.

RESUMO

We determined the complete mitochondrial genome of Kaloula rugifera in this work. The mitogenome was 17,073 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes and a control region (D-loop). The base composition of the light strand was 29.7% A, 30.4% T, 25.7% C and 14.2% G. The gene order and contents of it is identical to most amphibian mitogenome. All protein-coding genes began with ATG as start codon except ND1 gene beginning with GTG and COI gene beginning with ATA. Five protein-coding genes (COII, ATP 6, COIII, ND3 and ND4) ended with incomplete stop codon T. The 22 tRNA genes with the size ranging from 65 bp to 73 bp were interspersed along the whole genome. The D-loop region containing tandem repetition was 1675 bp in length and heavily biased to A + T nucleotides.

RESUMO

Screening hyperaccumulators and accumulators is a key step in the phytoremediation of soils contaminated by heavy metals. A pot experiment was conducted involving a soil Cd concentration gradient (0, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 mg kg(-1)) to determine if Malva sinensis Cavan. from two lead-zinc mines in Kangding and Yajiang in western Sichuan, China, is a Cd-hyperaccumulator. The highest Cd concentrations in plant shoots from Kangding and Yajiang were 154.30 and 122.77 mg kg(-1), respectively, at a soil Cd concentration of 200 mg kg(-1). The largest amounts of accumulation in plant shoots from Kangding and Yajiang were 700.5 and 1403.2 microg pot(-1), respectively. The bioconcentration factors in shoots were 0.53-1.03 for Kangding and 0.69-1.25 for Yajiang. Moreover, all translocation factors of plants from the two sites were over 1.0. Therefore, M. sinensis can be classified as a Cd-accumulator or non-standard Cd-hyperaccumulator.

RESUMO

Because of its toxicity to animals and humans, cadmium (Cd) is an environmentally important heavy metal. Consequently, researchers are interested in using hyperaccumulator and accumulator plants to decontaminate Cd polluted soils. To investigate Cd tolerance, uptake and accumulation by Amaranthus hybridus L., Cd concentration gradients were applied to a soil (at rates of 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 mg kg(-1)) and hydroponics solutions (at rates of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 mg L(-1)) following a field survey. A. hybridus grew normally at added Cd concentrations < or =90 mg kg(-1) and < or =20 mg L(-1) in the soil culture and in the hydroponics solutions, respectively. In the hydroponics solutions, peroxidase activity showed a quadratic relationship and catalase activity changed irregularly with increasing Cd concentrations. The highest Cd concentration and accumulation in shoots were 241.56 mg kg(-1) and 1006.95 microg pot(-1) in the soil culture, and 354.56 mg kg(-1) and 668.42 microg pot(-1) in the hydroponics experiment. Bioconcentration factors in soil culture and hydroponics solutions were 0.58-1.22 and 5.18-17.55, and translocation factors were 0.64-1.50 and 0.33-0.92, respectively. A. hybridus has potential phytoremediation capability in Cd polluted soils.
