RESUMO

An experiment utilizing 960 Ross × Ross 708 male broilers was conducted to determine the effects of Ca feeding strategy on true ileal (prececal) P digestibility (TIPD) and true P retention (TPR) of corn. Experimental diets were formulated with 1 of 3 dietary Ca feeding strategies (0.95%, 0.13%, or variable Ca concentrations to maintain a 2.1:1 Ca:P ratio) and contain 0, 25, 50, or 75% corn. A practical corn-soybean meal diet (1.4:1 Ca:P ratio) was fed as a control. After receiving a common starter diet, experimental diets were fed from 19 to 26 d of age. After a 48-h dietary adaptation period, a 48-h retention assay was conducted. At 25 and 26 d of age, ileal digesta were collected from 8 birds per cage. Broilers consuming the control diet had higher (P<0.001) BW gain, feed intake, digesta P, and excreta P than broilers consuming the corn titration diets. Digesta and excreta P increased (linear, P<0.05) with graded increases of corn. True ileal P digestibility and TPR were highest (P<0.05) for diets with 0.13% Ca (57.3 and 69.5%, respectively) compared with diets formulated with a 2.1:1 Ca:P ratio (41.2 and 37.8%, respectively) or 0.95% Ca (25.4 and 39.0%, respectively). Values for TPR were higher (P<0.05) than those for TIPD except when the dietary Ca:P ratio was fixed. Additionally, negative endogenous P losses were predicted by regression equations when TPR was estimated for birds fed titration diets with the fixed Ca:P ratio. Changing the Ca concentration of the diets to maintain a fixed Ca:P ratio influenced (P<0.001) apparent P retention, which affected the estimate for TPR due to the prediction of negative endogenous P losses. These data demonstrated that regression analysis may have limitations when estimating the TIPD or TPR of corn when formulating diets with different Ca feeding strategies. More research is necessary to elucidate the factors that contributed to regression equations predicting negative endogenous P losses.

An experiment was conducted using male Ross×Ross 708 broiler chicks to determine the effect of oil extraction from corn distillers dried grains with solubles on apparent ileal amino acid digestibility from 23 to 31 d of age. On an as-fed basis, ether extract concentrations were determined as 5.4% (L-distillers dried grains with solubles), 7.9% (M-distillers dried grains with solubles), and 10.5% (H-distillers dried grains with solubles) for the 3 experimental distillers dried grains with solubles sources. Prior to experimentation, each sample (H-distillers dried grains with solubles (control), M-distillers dried grains with solubles and L-distillers dried grains with solubles) was analyzed on an as-fed basis for crude protein (29.2, 27.6, and 27.9%), starch (4.4, 5.2, and 6.1%), neutral detergent fiber (29.5, 33.2, and 29.9%), and total dietary fiber (31.4, 36.6, and 33.6 %). Four hundred and thirty-two male chicks (12 birds per cage; 0.04 m2 per bird) were randomly assigned to 36 battery grower cages. Broilers were fed one of 3 semi-purified diets, which were comprised of 76% L-distillers dried grains with solubles, M- distillers dried grains with solubles, or H-distillers dried grains with solubles as the sole amino acid source from 23 to 31 d of age. Apparent ileal amino acid digestibility coefficients were negatively affected (P<0.05) by oil extraction for Met (0.722, 0.788, and 0.791), Lys (0.504, 0.510, and 0.552), Thr (0.563, 0.566, and 0.612), Trp (0.708, 0.733, and 0.767), and Arg (0.762, 0.776, and 0.799) for L-distillers dried grains with solubles, M-distillers dried grains with solubles, and H-distillers dried grains with solubles, respectively. Conversely, no differences in apparent amino acid coefficients were reported for Ile, Leu, and Val. These results indicated that L-distillers dried grains with solubles had lower apparent amino acid digestibility coefficients for Met, Lys, Thr, Trp, and Arg compared with H-distillers dried grains with solubles.

An experiment consisting of 3 nearly identical trials was conducted to determine the AMEn content of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to validate 4 previously published prediction equations for AMEn of corn DDGS in broilers. In addition, prior research data were used to generate a best-fit equation for AMEn based on proximate analysis. Fifteen samples of DDGS ranging in ether extract (EE) from 4.98 to 14.29% (DM basis) were collected from various dry-grind ethanol plants and were subsequently fed to broiler chicks to determine AMEn content. A corn-soybean meal control diet was formulated to contain 15% dextrose and test diets were created by mixing the control diet with 15% DDGS at the expense of dextrose. In each trial, male Ross × Ross 708 chicks were housed in grower battery cages and received a common starter diet until the experimental period. Each cage was randomly assigned to 1 of the dietary treatments (trial 1 and trial 2: control + 6 test diets, 13 replicates per diet; trial 3: control + 3 test diets, 12 replicates per diet). Experimental diets were fed over a 6-d acclimation period, followed by a 48-h total excreta collection period. On a DM basis, AMEn of the 15 DDGS samples ranged from 1,975 to 3,634 kcal/kg. Analyses were conducted to determine gross energy, CP, EE, DM, starch, total dietary fiber, neutral detergent fiber, crude fiber (CF), acid detergent fiber, and ash content of the DDGS samples. All results were reported on a DM basis. Application of the 4 equations to the validation data resulted in root mean square error (RMSE) values of 335, 381, 488, and 502 kcal/kg, respectively. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator technique was applied to proximate analysis data for 30 corn coproducts adapted from prior research and resulted in the following best-fit equation: [AMEn (kcal/kg) = 3,673 - (121.35 × CF) + (51.29 × EE) - (121.08 × ash); P < 0.01; R(2) = 0.70; R(2) adj = 0.67; RMSE = 270 kcal/kg]. The RMSE values obtained through validation were not consistent with the expectation of predictive performance based on internal measures of fit for each equation. These results indicated that validation is necessary to quantify the expected error associated with practical application of each individual prediction equation to external data.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of feeding reduced crude protein (CP) diets to Ross × Ross 708 male broilers while providing adequate essential amino acid (AA) concentrations on growth performance, nitrogen (N) and ammonia output, and carcass characteristics from d 1 to 33 post hatch. Birds received 1 of 6 dietary treatments (10 replicate pens per treatment) varying in CP content. Diet 1 (control) was formulated with DL-Met, L-Lys, and L-Thr (23.2, 20.7, and 19.1% CP) in the starter (1-14 d of age), grower (15-25 d of age), and finisher (26-33 d of age) periods, respectively. Dietary L-Val, Gly (only in starter period), L-Ile, L-Arg, and L-Trp were sequentially supplemented in the order of limitation in Diets 2 through 6. Dietary CP was reduced gradually across the dietary treatments resulting in a CP reduction in Diets 1 to 6 by 3.4, 3.4, and 2.3% points in the starter, grower, and finisher periods, respectively. At d 14, 25, and 33 posthatch, feed conversion decreased (P < 0.05) with L-Val addition (Diet 2) and increased (P < 0.01) with L-Val to L-Trp addition (Diet 6) to the control. Dietary treatments did not alter weights and yields of carcass, breast, drum, or thighs. Dietary CP reduction with added L-Val (Diet 2), L-Val to L-Arg (Diet 5), or L-Val to L-Trp (Diet 6) increased abdominal fat (P < 0.01) compared with control. Nitrogen excretion (g/bird; P = 0.003) and equilibrium ammonia concentration (mg/kg; P = 0.041) at day 33 reduced by 16% and 48% respectively in birds fed reduced-CP diets with L-Val to L-Trp (Diet 6) compared with control-fed birds. This study indicated that sequential addition of supplemental AA in the order of limitation from DL-Met to L-Arg allowed reduction of dietary CP beyond 2%-point without depressing growth performance and meat yield of broilers from day 1 to 33 while reducing nitrogen excretion and ammonia emissions.

The same experimental protocol was used in 4 institutions to evaluate the impact of non-phytate phosphorus (nPP) concentration in the starter diet on regression method-derived ileal P digestibility of soybean meal (SBM) during the subsequent grower phase. A total of 1,536 Ross 308 male broiler chickens on d 0 post hatching were allotted to 2 pre-experimental starter diets that contained 3.5 or 4.5 g nPP/kg (96 replicate cages per diet, 8 birds per cage) for 18 d. Subsequently, 576 birds from each starter diet were selected and allocated to 3 experimental semi-purified grower diets containing 400, 510, or 620 g SBM/kg (32 replicate cages per diet, 6 birds per cage) for 3 d until collection of ileal digesta. Statistical analysis was conducted as a randomized complete block design with the starter period as whole plot and the grower period as split-plot. The only significant 2-way interaction was between grower diet and experimental institution (P < 0.05) on BW gain and gain to feed ratio. The main effect of institution and grower diet impacted (P < 0.05) feed intake, the digestibility of DM, P, and calcium, and disappearance of inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6) in the grower diets. Birds fed the 3.5 g nPP/kg starter diet had lower (P < 0.05) BW gain and feed intake during the grower period, but presented higher (P < 0.05) digestibility of P and disappearance of InsP6 compared with the birds that were fed the 4.5 g nPP/kg starter diet. Regression method-derived ileal P digestibility of SBM was determined to be 46 or 42% for the respective 3.5 or 4.5 g nPP/kg pre-experimental starter diet and was not affected by the nPP concentration or by the institution. In conclusion, the experimental protocol used in the current study resulted in similar estimates across multiple institutions and is thus endorsed for future application in studies that aim to expand the database of digestible P content in plant source feed ingredients.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of diets containing low oligosaccharide soybean meals (SBM) on growth performance, meat yields, and physiological variables of broilers during a 6-wk production period. In experiment 1, six hundred Ross × Ross 708 male chicks were randomly distributed to 24 floor pens (25 birds per pen; 0.09 m(2) per bird at 1 d of age). Birds were fed corn-soybean meal-poultry by-product meal-based diets with either low oligosaccharide (LOSBM) or control SBM (CSBM) from 1 to 40 d of age. In experiment 2, one thousand five hundred Ross × Ross 708 male chicks were randomly distributed to 60 floor pens (25 birds per pen; 0.09 m(2) per bird at 1 d of age). Broilers were fed corn-soybean meal-poultry by-product meal-based diets containing 1 of 3 SBM sources [CSBM, LOSBM, or ultra-low oligosaccharide SBM (ULSBM)] and formulated with moderate or reduced AMEn concentrations (25 kcal/kg reduction) resulting in a 3 × 2 factorial design. Diets were formulated using AMEn and digestible amino acid values determined from previous research utilizing the same SBM types. Variables measured consisted of BW gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, mortality, carcass weight and yield, abdominal fat percentage, total breast meat weight and yield, digesta viscosities and pH, plasma nonesterfied fatty acids, plasma glucose, and plasma triglycerides. In experiment 1, broilers fed diets containing LOSBM had increased BW gain (P = 0.020) and decreased (P < 0.001) feed conversion from 1 to 14 d of age. Abdominal fat percentage was higher (P < 0.001) for birds fed LOSBM vs. CSBM. In experiment 2, no differences were observed for interaction effects or main effects of energy concentration. Feed conversion ratio was lower (P < 0.001) for broilers fed diets containing ULSBM vs. LOSBM and CSBM from 1 to 28 and 1 to 42 d of age. Broilers fed diets formulated with ULSBM had higher (P < 0.05) carcass yield vs. birds fed diets with CSBM. Total breast yield was higher (P = 0.021) for birds fed diets containing LOSBM and ULSBM vs. CSBM. Abdominal fat percentage was higher (P = 0.027) for broilers fed diets containing LOSBM vs. CSBM. Diets formulated with LOSBM and ULSBM required approximately 45% less supplemental fat, and broilers fed these diets exhibited no adverse effects on growth performance and meat yields compared with broilers fed diets containing CSBM.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the extra-phosphoric effects of phytase on amino acid (AA) and energy digestibility (experiments 1 and 2) and growth performance (experiment 2) of broilers fed diets adequate in Ca and nonphytate P supplemented with xylanase. Ross × Ross 708 broiler chicks (864 males in experiment 1 and 1,152 females in experiment 2) were randomly distributed into battery cages (6 replicate cages per treatment) with 12 birds per cage at 1 d of age. In both experiments, factorial arrangements of treatments were evaluated consisting of 6 phytase [0, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, 8,000, or 16,000 phytase units (FTU)/kg] and 2 xylanase [0 or 16,000 birch xylan units (BXU)/kg] concentrations in experiment 1 and 4 phytase (0, 500, 1,000 or 2,000 FTU/kg) and 4 xylanase (0, 8,000, 16,000, or 32,000 BXU/kg) concentrations in experiment 2. Treatments were provided from 27 to 32 d of age in experiment 1 and from 1 to 32 d of age in experiment 2. Digesta contents of the terminal ileum were collected at 32 d of age (experiment 1 and 2), and growth performance was measured at 1, 14, and 25 d of age in experiment 2. There was no interaction of phytase and xylanase; only main effects of phytase were observed. In experiment 1, broilers fed diets supplemented with phytase at 1,000 FTU/kg had increased (P < 0.05) apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of all AA with the exception of Ala and Met. Diets fed to broilers supplemented with higher concentrations of phytase did not further increase AID of any AA (P > 0.05) above the addition of 1,000 FTU/kg of phytase. Phytase supplementation did not affect ileal digestible energy (P > 0.05). For all variables measured, significant log-linear or log-quadratic effects of phytase (P > 0.05) were not observed. In contrast, broilers fed diets supplemented with phytase in experiment 2 exhibited log-linear (P < 0.05) increases in AID of AA but not apparent ileal digestible energy. However, supplementation with 2,000 FTU/kg of phytase increased (P = 0.05) ileal digestible energy by 36 kcal/kg compared with the basal diet. Broilers fed diets with 1,000 FTU/kg of phytase had improved growth performance (P < 0.05) in comparison with broilers fed diets containing 0 or 500 FTU/kg of phytase. The addition of 500 FTU/kg of phytase in diets fed to broilers did not affect ileal digestibility or growth performance (P > 0.05). Data obtained from these experiments demonstrated extra-phosphoric effects in broilers fed diets supplemented with 1,000 FTU/kg of phytase and diminishing returns with higher concentrations.

The objective was to determine the effects of extractable salt-soluble protein content of corn (PS) and exogenous enzyme supplementation on N, starch, and energy digestibility in broilers fed diets adequate in Ca and nonphytate P. Broilers were randomly distributed into floor pens (6 replicate pens per treatment) with 28 birds per pen at 1 d of age. Treatments consisting of 4 sources of corn varying in PS (A, 58.1; B, 54.2; C, 53.7; and D, 30.6 mg of BSA equivalent values) with or without phytase (0 and 1,000 phytase units/kg) and xylanase (0 and 16,000 units of xylanase activity/kg) were randomly assigned to each pen. Different sources of corn were provided from 1 to 9 and 24 to 29 d of age. However, enzyme treatments were provided throughout the experiment. From 1 to 9 d of age, no interactions were observed. Apparent ileal N digestibility (AIND) and apparent ileal digestible energy (IDE) of diets with the lowest PS (based on corn D) were lower (P ≤ 0.05) than those of diets with a higher PS. Phytase increased (P ≤ 0.01) AIND and IDE by 5 and 16%, respectively, and xylanase exerted the opposite effect (P ≤ 0.03). From 24 to 29 d of age, phytase and xylanase in combination resulted in reduced (P ≤ 0.05) AIND of diets with a low PS (based on corn D) compared with the basal diet in broilers. Broilers fed diets with the highest or lowest PS (based on corn A or D) had lower (3-way interaction; P ≤ 0.05) IDE when phytase and xylanase were supplemented in combination compared with either enzyme alone. In conclusion, responses to exogenous enzyme supplementation are not constant and are influenced by the source of ingredients as well as the age of broilers. The magnitudes of the responses to phytase on nutrient and energy digestibility were greater at 9 compared with 29 d of age.

Two identical trials were conducted to determine the relationship of a novel digestive enzyme assay, Poultry Complete IDEA (PC IDEA), and the pepsin digestibility assay with standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIAAD) of 20 animal protein meals (APM) fed to broilers from 25 to 30 d of age. Animal protein meals included 10 meat and bone meals (MBM) consisting of bovine, porcine, or mixed bovine and porcine raw materials (BP), and 10 animal protein blends containing animal proteins from various species. Treatments consisted of 20 semi-purified diets containing 1 APM as the sole source of dietary amino acids (AA), and 1 N-free diet to determine endogenous ileal AA flow. With the exception of the N-free diet, diets were formulated to contain 20% CP. In each trial, 756 Ross × Ross 708 male broilers were housed in battery cages and randomly assigned to 21 dietary treatments on d 25 (12 birds per cage; 3 replicate cages), and ileal digesta were collected on d 30 for determination of SIAAD. Pepsin digestibility and PC IDEA were determined for APM samples from each experimental diet (3 replicates per trial; 6 total replicates). Pepsin digestibility and PC IDEA were both correlated (P < 0.001) with SIAAD for each AA. Multiple linear regression of PC IDEA and pepsin digestibility on SIAAD resulted in the following equations: % Lys SIAAD = [-9.65 + (0.38 × % PC IDEA predicted Lys digestibility) + (0.69 × % pepsin digestibility)], % Met SIAAD = [-35.95 + (0.62 × % PC IDEA predicted Met digestibility) + (0.75 × % pepsin digestibility)], % Thr SIAAD = [-77.5 + (0.39 × % PC IDEA predicted Thr digestibility) + (1.37 × % pepsin digestibility)]. Values of R(2) were 0.46, 0.47, and 0.55 for Lys, Met, and Thr, respectively. The relatively low R(2) values may have been due to the limited range in SIAAD observed for the 20 APM, and additional data on APM varying in SIAAD are needed.

An experiment consisting of 2 identically designed trials was conducted to determine the nutrient composition and AMEn content of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) to develop prediction equations for AMEn in broilers. Fifteen samples of DDGS ranging in ether extract (EE) from 3.15 to 13.23% (DM basis) were collected from various dry-grind ethanol plants and were subsequently fed to broiler chicks to determine AMEn content. A corn-soybean meal control diet was formulated to contain 15% dextrose, and test diets were created by mixing the control diet with 15% DDGS at the expense of dextrose. In each trial, 672 male Ross × Ross 708 chicks were housed in grower battery cages with 7 birds per cage (0.06 m(2)/bird) and received a common starter diet until 10 d of age. Each cage was randomly assigned to 1 of 16 dietary treatments, with 6 replicate pens per treatment. Experimental diets were fed over a 6-d acclimation period from 10 to 16 d of age, followed by a 48-h total excreta collection period. Gross energy (GE) and CP of the experimental diets and excreta were determined to calculate AMEn for each DDGS sample. On a DM basis, AMEn of the 15 DDGS samples ranged from 1,869 to 2,824 kcal/kg. Analyses were conducted to determine the GE, CP, EE, DM, starch, total dietary fiber (TDF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and ash content of the DDGS samples. Stepwise regression resulted in the following best-fit equation for AMEn (DM basis) based on the adjusted coefficient of determination (R(2)adj), SE, and prediction error sum of squares (PRESS): AMEn, kcal/kg = -12,282 + (2.60 × GE) + (89.75 × CP) + (125.80 × starch) - (40.67 × TDF; R(2)adj = 0.86; SE = 98.76; PRESS = 199,819; P ≤ 0.001). These results indicated that the composition of DDGS with variable EE content may be used to predict AMEn in broiler chicks.

Four experiments were conducted using 1,992 Ross × Ross 708 male broilers to determine AME(n) and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD) of low-oligosaccharide (LOSBM), ultra-low oligosaccharide (ULSBM), and control soybean meal (CSBM) fed to broilers from 20 to 31 d of age. An AME(n) assay was conducted in experiments 1 and 2, whereas AIAAD was determined in experiments 3 and 4. Chicks were randomly assigned to 3, 4, 2, or 3 dietary treatments, respectively, for experiments 1, 2, 3, or 4. The additional treatment in experiments 2 and 4 was to evaluate ULSBM. In the AME(n) assays, treatments were fed from 20 to 29 d of age and a 48-h excreta collection period was conducted from 27 to 29 d of age. Treatment 1 consisted of a basal diet and treatments 2, 3, and 4 consisted of 70% of the basal diet plus 30% CSBM, LOSBM, or ULSBM, respectively. The difference method was used to determine AME(n) utilizing an N correction factor to account for N retention. To determine AIAAD, broilers were fed semi-purified diets with CSBM, LOSBM, or ULSBM as the sole source of amino acids (AA) from 26 to 31 d of age with digesta collection occurring at 31 d of age. In experiment 1, LOSBM had 194 kcal/kg more AME(n) compared with CSBM (P = 0.011). Apparent ME(n) value of LOSBM was 141 and 134 kcal/kg higher (P = 0.012) compared with CSBM and ULSBM, respectively, in experiment 2. Digestible Lys, Met, Ile, and Val concentrations were higher (P < 0.001) for LOSBM vs. CSBM in experiment 3 even though digestibility coefficients were lower (P < 0.001) for LOSBM. In experiment 4, higher (P < 0.001) concentrations of digestible Met, Lys, Thr, Val, and Ile were observed for ULSBM and LOSBM compared with CSBM. In conclusion, genetically selected soybean meals with reduced stachyose and raffinose concentrations had higher AME(n) and AIAAD values compared with CSBM.

An experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between in vitro assays to estimate quality and ileal nutrient and energy digestibility of various corn sources. Twelve samples of corn were analyzed for gross energy (GE), N, moisture, crude fat (CF), salt-soluble protein content (SSP), and vitreousness. Six of the 12 sources of corn had similar proximate composition but ranged in pairs as having low, moderate, or high quality based on protein solubility that varied from 25.7 to 49.2%. Experimental diets consisted of corn sources with 0.50% TiO2. In total, 504 (12 per pen; 0.039 m2 per bird) Ross×Ross 708 male broiler chicks were randomly distributed to 42 pens (7 replicates per treatment) at 1 d of age. Broilers were fed common starter and grower diets from 1 to 27 d of age and experimental diets from 28 to 30 d of age. At 30 d of age, 8 birds per cage were euthanized for digesta collection from 4 to 30 cm proximal to the ileocecal junction. Feed and digesta were analyzed for TiO2, GE, N, CF, and starch content. Ileal digestibility of N (apparent), CF, and starch did not differ (P>0.05) among sources of corn. Apparent ileal digestible energy (IDE) of the 6 corns averaged 3,323 kcal/kg. Salt-soluble protein concentration was correlated with IDE among the corns (r=0.5; P<0.001). Ileal N and fat digestibility were correlated with IDE (r=0.4 and 0.3, respectively; P<0.05). Apparent MEn ranged from 3,262 to 3,342 kcal/kg and was correlated with SSP (r=0.8; P<0.001) and IDE (r=0.36; P<0.05). These results indicated that sources of corn with similar proximate composition may vary in their digestible energy content, and in such a situation, SSP may be used to differentiate those with wide-ranging IDE or AMEn. However, further research is required to investigate the relationship between SSP and growth performance of broilers.

This experiment evaluated rate of passage (ROP) and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD) of 4 diets varying in ingredient composition fed to broilers from 14 to 22 d of age. Two hundred and 88 Ross × Ross 708 chicks (12 birds per cage; 0.45 m(2) per bird) were randomly assigned to 24 cages (6 replicate cages per treatment) at 1 d of age. Experimental diets were 1) corn-soybean meal-based (CSM) diet containing porcine meat and bone meal (MBM; 5% inclusion), 2) CSM diet containing distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS; 5% inclusion), 3) semipurified (SP) diet containing MBM (38% inclusion), and 4) SP diet containing DDGS (76% inclusion). Diets were formulated to contain 20% CP and were adequate for vitamins and minerals. Experimental diets were provided from d 14 to 22. On d 18, a total excreta collection was conducted every hour for 12 h from 0800 to 1900 h to determine ROP, and AIAAD was determined on d 22. Time of 1% TiO(2) excretion (T1), 50% TiO(2) excretion (T50), and mean retention time (MRT) were used to express ROP. The SP-MBM diet reached T1 (P < 0.05) faster than the SP-DDGS or 2 CSM diets. However, T50 indicated a faster (P < 0.05) ROP for SP-DDGS than the 2 CSM diets, and no significant difference was observed between the 2 SP diets. The MRT of the SP-DDGS diet (5.13 h) was less (P < 0.05) than the MRT of the SP-MBM, CSM-MBM, and CSM-DDGS diets, which resulted in values of 5.48, 5.62, and 5.58 h, respectively. In general, the AIAAD values were higher (P < 0.05) for the 2 CSM diets than for SP diets. Except for His, no statistical differences were observed between the AIAAD of the 2 CSM diets. Comparing the 2 SP diets, AIAAD was usually similar or higher (P < 0.05) for SP-DDGS, except for His, Lys, and Gly, which were higher (P < 0.05) for SP-MBM. Based on T50 and MRT, SP diets containing DDGS had a faster ROP in broilers than CSM diets or SP diets containing MBM.

An experiment (3 trials) was conducted to determine the AME(n) of 15 corn co-products obtained from various wet and dry milling plants, and to develop prediction equations for AME(n) based on chemical composition. Co-products included distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS, n = 6), high-protein distillers dried grains (n = 2), corn germ (n = 2), corn germ meal, corn bran with solubles, corn gluten meal, corn gluten feed, and dehulled, degermed corn. Treatments (15) consisted of 85% inclusion of the corn-soybean meal basal diet combined with a 15% inclusion of each corn co-product, as well as a control diet containing glucose•H(2)O (15%) at the expense of the co-product. In each trial, Ross × Ross 708 chicks (10 birds per pen) were randomly assigned to 16 dietary treatments (12 replicate pens; 4 replicate pens per trial). After a 7-d diet acclimation period from 15 to 22 d of age, a 48-h total excreta collection was conducted for the determination of AME(n). Co-products were analyzed for gross energy, CP, moisture, crude fat, starch, crude fiber, ash, total dietary fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber, and hemicellulose was determined by difference. Stepwise regression resulted in the following equation: AME(n), kcal/kg of DM = 3,517 + (46.02 × % crude fat, DM basis) - (82.47 × % ash, DM basis) - (33.27 × % hemicellulose, DM basis) (R(2) = 0.89; SEM = 191; P ≤ 0.01). Removing hemicellulose from the model resulted in the following equation: AME(n), kcal/kg of DM = (-30.19 × % neutral detergent fiber, DM basis) + (0.81 × gross energy, kcal/kg of DM basis) - (12.26 × % CP, DM basis) (R(2) = 0.87; SEM = 196; P ≤ 0.01). These results indicate that nutrient composition may be used to generate AME(n) prediction equations for corn co-products fed to broiler chicks.

An energy balance experiment was conducted to determine the AME(n) of various crude glycerin samples, and to generate an equation to predict AME(n) of crude glycerin based on its chemical composition. Dietary treatments consisted of a corn-soybean meal basal diet with no added glycerin and a basal diet supplemented with 6% glycerin. Crude glycerin samples were obtained from biodiesel production facilities throughout the United States, which use a variety of lipid products as their initial feedstock. Two identical energy balance trials were conducted. In each trial, 864 male broilers (Ross × Ross 708) were fed a common starter diet until 17 d of age when they were switched to 1 of 12 experimental diets (6 replicates per treatment) from 17 to 22 d of age, with a 48-h collection period on d 21 and 22. Nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy values of crude glycerin samples were estimated by difference, whereby AME(n) of the basal diet was subtracted from the complete diet containing the test ingredient. The AME(n) of the basal diet and US Pharmacopeia-grade glycerin were determined to be 3,085 and 3,662 kcal/kg, respectively, whereas the AME(n) of the 10 crude glycerin samples ranged from 3,254 to 4,134 kcal/kg. Two crude glycerin samples had high levels of fatty acids compared with the other samples (24 and 35% vs. <0.30%), and even though their AME(n) was higher than that of the other glycerin samples (3,806 vs. 3,611 kcal/kg, P < 0.01, respectively), their AME(n) as a percentage of gross energy (GE) was lower than that of the other samples (65.5% vs. 97.4%, respectively; P < 0.01). Including all of the glycerin samples, the stepwise regression equation to predict AME(n) was determined to be: [AME(n) (kcal/kg) = 1,605 - (19.13 × % methanol) + (39.06 × % fatty acid) + (23.47 × % glycerin)]; (R(2) = 0.25; SE = 379; P ≤ 0.01). These data indicate that glycerin is a good source of energy for broilers, and the AME(n) of glycerin is dependent on fatty acid, methanol, and water contents.

Two experiments were conducted to examine AME(n) responses of Ross × Ross 708 male and female broilers from 36 to 47 d of age. In each experiment, 1,440 male and female broilers were randomly distributed into 96 floor pens (15 birds/pen; 8 replicate pens/treatment) sexed separately and were fed 6 levels of AME(n) ranging from 3,140 to 3,240 kcal/kg in increments of 20 kcal of AME(n)/kg, resulting in a 6 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, AME(n) intake, AME(n) intake per BW gain, plasma 5-triiodothyronine and thyroxine concentrations, mortality, and meat yields were evaluated during experimentation. Average temperature and RH were 20.3°C and 49.0% for experiment 1 and 26.1°C and 66.6% for experiment 2. In experiment 1, broilers fed progressive additions of AME(n) had lower (P ≤ 0.02) feed intake, feed conversion, and caloric conversion. Progressive increments of AME(n) did not influence plasma 5-triiodothyronine and thyroxine concentrations, carcass yield, or breast meat yield. No AME(n) × sex interactions were observed in experiment 1. In experiment 2, AME(n) × sex linear interactions (P ≤ 0.04) were observed for BW gain, caloric conversion, carcass weight, and total breast weight. Male broilers responded more to higher AME(n) levels than did female broilers. These data indicate that AME(n) needed for growth performance of broilers from 36 to 47 d of age differed between experiments.

1. Valine (Val) is considered the 4th limiting amino acid for broilers fed on diets containing ingredients from vegetable origin. However, Val and Isoleucine (Ile) may be co-limiting for broilers fed on diets containing animal protein meals. An experiment was conducted to examine growth responses and meat yield of broilers provided diets varying in digestible Val (dVal) and digestible Ile (dIle) concentrations from 28 to 42 d of age. 2. Eight experimental diets varying in dVal (dVal to dLys ratios from 0·66 to 0·76) and dIle (dIle to dLys ratios from 0·57 to 0·67) were studied; digestible Lysine (Lys) was formulated to 9·9 g/kg in all diets. 3. Broilers fed on a negative control (NC) diet supplemented with crystalline Val (L-Val) and crystalline Ile (L-Ile), dVal to dLys = 0·76 and dIle to dLys = 0·67, grew faster and had higher breast meat yield than birds fed on NC + L-Ile (dVal to dLys = 0·66 and dIle to dLys = 0·67), NC + L-Val (dVal to dLys = 0·76 and dIle to dLys = 0·57), and NC + reduced L-Val and L-Ile (dVal to dLys = 0·71 and dIle to dLys = 0·62). 4. Feeding broilers on the NC + L-Val and L-Ile (dVal to dLys = 0·76 and dIle to dLys = 0·67) diets gave similar BW gain, carcase weight and yield and total breast meat weight and yield to birds fed on the positive control-fed broilers with no added L-Val and L-Ile (dVal to dLys = 0·76 and dIle to dLys = 0·67). 5. These results indicate that Val and Ile are co-limiting in diets containing poultry by-product meal.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of inositol and gradient phytase supplementation on growth performance and meat yield of broilers from 1 to 41 d of age. A total of 1,920 Yield Plus × Ross 708 male chicks were placed in 64 floor pens (30 birds per pen). Each pen received one of the 8 dietary treatments (8 replicate pens) from 1 to 15, 16 to 29, and 30 to 40 d of age. Treatment 1 was formulated to contain 0.165 and 0.150% lower calcium and phosphorus, respectively, than treatment 7 (positive control). Phytase was added to treatment 1 at concentration of 500, 1,500, 4,500, 13,500, and 40,500 phytase units (FTU)/kg to establish treatments 2 to 6, respectively. Treatment 8 was formulated by adding inositol to treatment 7 based on the expected inositol liberation in treatment 6. Feed and birds were weighed at 1, 15, 29, and 40 d of age to determine BW gain, feed intake, and feed conversion. Twelve birds per pen were processed at 41 d of age to determine carcass characteristics. From 1 to 40 d of age, log-quadratic effects of phytase (treatments 1-6) were observed for BW gain (P = 0.002) and feed conversion in broilers (P = 0.018), whereas feed intake increased log-linearly (P = 0.045). The addition of 40,500 FTU/kg of phytase increased cumulative BW gain (P = 0.001) and decreased cumulative feed conversion (P = 0.005) by 4.7 and 2.6%, respectively, compared with birds subjected to treatment 8. Log-quadratic effects of phytase additions were observed for carcass (P < 0.001) and breast meat weights (P = 0.004). Growth performance and carcass characteristics of broilers subjected to treatment 7 were similar (P > 0.05) to those of birds subjected to treatment 8. These data demonstrate that the extraphosphoric effects of phytase may be associated with increased feed intake of broilers. Inositol supplementation did not provide additional benefits to broilers in this study.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary phytase and inositol supplementation on phytate degradation in gizzard and ileal digesta contents of broilers from 1 to 43 d of age. One thousand nine hundred and twenty Yield Plus × Ross 708 male chicks were placed in 64 floor pens (30 birds/pen). Each pen received 1 of 8 dietary treatments from 1 to 43 d of age. Treatment 1 was formulated to contain 0.165 and 0.150% lower calcium and phosphorus, respectively, than treatment 7. Treatments 2 to 6 were formulated by adding phytase at 500, 1,500, 4,500, 13,500, and 40,500 phytase units (FTU)/kg, respectively, to treatment 1. Treatment 8 was established by adding inositol to treatment 7 based on the maximum inositol liberation in treatment 6. At 15, 29, and 43 d of age, gizzard contents, ileal digesta, and blood were collected for analysis of inositol and inositol phosphate (IP) 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 concentrations. Increasing phytase from 0 to 40,500 FTU/kg resulted in log-quadratic reductions (P < 0.01) of inositol pentaphosphate and inositol hexakisphosphate concentrations in the gizzard and ileal digesta contents of broilers at 15, 29, and 43 d of age. The increase in phytase doses in treatments 1 to 6 reduced IP3 and IP4 concentrations in a log-quadratic manner (P < 0.05) at each collection period in gizzard contents but only at 43 d of age in the ileal digesta of broilers (P < 0.01). Log-quadratic increases (P < 0.05) of inositol concentrations were observed in gizzard and ileal digesta contents when increasing phytase activity from 0 to 40,500 FTU/kg at each collection period, which translated to a log-quadratic increase (P < 0.01) in plasma inositol concentration of broilers at 15, 29, and 43 d of age. Phytase supplementation up to 40,500 FTU/kg may benefit broilers by reducing phytate concentrations in the gizzard and ileal digesta contents. Moreover, inositol release in the ileal digesta may translate to increased plasma inositol concentration.

Three experiments (Exp) were conducted to determine optimal digestible Ile to Lys ratios for male Yield Plus × Ross 708 broilers from approximately 1.0 to 4.0 kg BW. Broilers were fed dose-response diets with inclusions of blood cells that were formulated to contain a gradient of digestible Ile to Lys ratios (0.46 to 0.83). Treatments for Exp 1 to 3 were fed from 21 to 35, 28 to 42, and 35 to 49 d of age, respectively, to target market weights from 2.5 to 4.0 kg. Experiments utilized positive control (PC) diets that did not contain blood cells and were formulated to the same Ile ratios as Treatment 5. Birds and feed were weighed by pen on the first and last days of the experimental period to determine growth performance. Selected broilers were processed and deboned to determine carcass characteristics. For all Exp, quadratic effects (P ≤ 0.001) were observed with BW gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), breast meat weight, and breast meat yield (BMY) as digestible Ile to Lys ratios increased. Contrasts between PC and Treatment 5 for each Exp displayed no effect of blood cell inclusion with the exception of FCR in Exp 1 (P = 0.001) and BMY in Exp 3 (P = 0.017). Optimum digestible Ile to Lys ratios for Exp 1 were determined to range from 0.640 to 0.725 for growth from 1.0 to 2.5 kg BW (P ≤ 0.001) and breast meat characteristics. In Exp 2, optimum ratios ranged from 0.664 to 0.682 for growth and breast meat characteristics from 1.6 to 3.1 kg BW (P ≤ 0.001). For growth and breast meat characteristics of broilers in Exp 3, optimum ratios ranged from 0.625 to 0.730, from 2.6 to 3.9 kg BW (P ≤ 0.001). Based on these findings, optimum digestible Ile to Lys ratios were determined to range from 0.63 to 0.73 for broilers from 1.0 to 4.0 kg BW.
