RESUMO

Management regimes of marine resources that rely on spatial boundaries might be poorly adapted to climate change shifts in species distributions. This is of specific concern for the management of fish stocks that cross management jurisdictions, known as shared stocks. Transitioning to dynamic rules in spatial management has been suggested as a solution for mismatches between species distributions and the spatial boundaries. However, in many cases spatial boundaries are not clearly drawn, hampering such transitions. Here, we use black sea bass (Centropristis striata), summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus) and scup (Stenotomus chrysops) as case studies to explore different approaches to designing spatial regulatory units to facilitate the adaptation of fisheries management to shifting distributions of shared stocks. First, we determine the yearly distribution of each stock within the United States Exclusive Economic Zone from 1951 to 2019 during Fall and Spring sampling seasons. Second, we explore two approaches for drawing regulatory units based on state waters and historical landings. Finally, we estimate each state's proportion of the stock's distribution and compare historical and recent values. We show that the distribution of all three stocks has changed relative to the years used to determine the current quota allocation across states, with an overall gain for central-northern states at the expense of the southernmost states. In terms of the distribution of allocation, we find that, while seasonal differences exist, the biggest differences in the proportion of the stock spatial distribution attributed to each state come from the method for designing regulatory units. Here, we show that the method used to define allocation units can have meaningful impacts on resulting adaptive policy. As climate change-driven conflicts in fishing resource allocation are expected to increase and deepen around the world, we provide a replicable approach to make an informed and transparent choice to support data-driven decision-making.

An adaptive pinhole aperture that fits a GE MaxiCam Single-Photon-Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) system has been designed, built, and is undergoing testing. The purpose of an adaptive aperture is to allow the imaging system to make adjustments to the aperture while imaging data are being acquired. Our adaptive pinhole aperture can alter several imaging parameters, including field of view, resolution, sensitivity, and magnification. The dynamic nature of such an aperture allows for imaging of specific regions of interest based on initial measurements of the patient. Ideally, this mode of data collection will improve the understanding of a patient's condition, and will facilitate better diagnosis and treatment. The aperture was constructed using aluminum and a low melting point, high-stopping-power metal alloy called Cerrobend. The aperture utilizes a rotating disk for the selection of a pinhole configuration; as the aluminum disk rotates, different pinholes move into view of the camera face and allow the passage of gamma rays through that particular pinhole. By controlling the angular position of the disk, the optical characteristics of the aperture can be modified, allowing the system to acquire data from controlled regions of interest. First testing was performed with a small radioactive source to prove the functionality of the aperture.

PURPOSE: This investigation evaluated and compared the dimensional accuracy and surface detail reproduction of two hydrophilic polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) and two polyether (PE) impression materials when used under dry and moist conditions. METHODS: Impressions were made of stainless steel dies as described in ANSI/ADA specification no. 19, with two vertical and three horizontal lines inscribed on the die superior surface. Impressions were made under dry and moist conditions (17 impressions per condition for each material). Dimensional accuracy was measured by comparing the average length of the middle horizontal line in each impression with the same line on the metal die using a measuring microscope with an accuracy of 0.001 mm. Surface detail reproduction was evaluated by using criteria similar to ADA specification no. 19: continuous replication of at least two of the three horizontal lines. RESULTS: The mean percent dimensional change and SD values ranged from -0.135% (0.035) to 0.053% (0.031). A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that moisture did not cause significant adverse effects on the dimensional accuracy of any material (p > 0.05); however, significant differences were found between the materials (p < .05). The surface detail evaluation indicated that moisture had a significant effect on detail reproduction of PVS materials (Pearson's Chi square, p < 0.05). Under dry conditions, all materials produced satisfactory detail reproduction 100% of the time; however, under moist conditions, only 29% of Aquasil and Genie Ultra PVS impressions produced satisfactory detail reproduction, while 100% of Permadyne Garant and Impregum Penta Soft PE impressions still met the surface detail criteria. CONCLUSIONS: Although moisture may not adversely affect the dimensional accuracy of either PE or hydrophilic PVS material, the evidence suggests that PE material is more likely to produce impressions with superior detail reproduction in the presence of moisture.
