In the experimental group, the average scores of knowledge, constructs of theory of planned behavior, nutrition, and walking had a significant enhancement compared to the control group after the educational intervention. After the intervention, the value of the lumbar spine bone mineral density T-score in the experimental group increased, while in the control group, it decreased. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a global public health problem currently affecting millions of people worldwide and in Iran. This study was conducted to assess the effect of an educational intervention based on the theory of planned behavior on the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 160 women aging over 50 who were referred to health centers in Fasa City, Iran, in 2019. A simple random sampling method was applied to assign the participants into control and intervention groups (80 participants for each group). Data were gathered by questionnaires arranged based on the constructs of the theory of planned behavior, nutrition performance, and walking performance. The educational intervention included seven 50-minute educational sessions. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS 22 software and Chi-square test, independent T-test, and paired T-test, and the significance level was considered 0.05. RESULTS: The mean ages of the studied participants in the experimental and control groups were 59.18 ± 6.56 and 57.92 ± 5.70, respectively. In the experimental group, the average scores of knowledge, constructs of the theory of planned behavior, nutrition performance, and walking performance had a significant enhancement compared to the control group one year after the intervention (p < 0.001). At 12 months after the intervention, the value of the lumbar spine bone mineral density T-score in the experimental group increased, while in the control group, it reduced (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The theory of planned behavior affected nutrition and walking performance in osteoporosis prevention of subjects. This theory can be used as a framework for designing and performing educational interventions for preventing osteoporosis and promoting women's health.

1. The following study determined whether the effects of the combined addition of zinc amino acid complex (ZA) and selenomethionine (SM) was superior to their single addition in controlling the oxidative stress induced by dietary oxidised fat in laying hens.2. Two hundred and forty 32-week-old laying hens were divided into the following dietary treatments (each consisting of six replicates of eight birds): 1) a fresh soy oil (FSO) diet; 2) an oxidised soy oil (OSO) diet; 3) an OSO diet plus 20 mg zinc as ZA/kg (OSO+ZA); 4) an OSO diet plus 0.2 mg selenium as SM/kg (OSO+SM); and 5) an OSO diet plus ZA and SM (OSO+ZA+SM).3. After 10 weeks of feeding hens, feed intake, egg production, and egg mass in the OSO+ZA+SM group were similar to the FSO group but better (P < 0.05) than those in the OSO group. Shell thickness and shell breaking strength were significantly improved by the OSO+ZA and OSO+ZA+SM treatments.4. Increases in the yolk concentrations of palmitic acid and total saturated fatty acids (SFA), and decreases in yolk linoleic acid, n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), total PUFA, and PUFA/SFA ratio were induced by dietary oxidised fat which were normalised (P < 0.05) by OSO+SM and OSO+ZA+SM.5. An increase (P < 0.05) in malondialdehyde and a decrease in 2,2-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity in the yolk, induced by dietary oxidised fat, was significantly improved by all dietary supplementations, but only birds fed the OSO+ZA+SM diet exhibited similar values to those fed FSO.6. In conclusion, the simultaneous inclusion of organic zinc plus selenium in the oxidised fat diets was beneficial for improving egg-laying performance, yolk fatty acid profile, and oxidative stability, but not for internal egg quality, compared with either zinc or selenium alone in laying hens.

Two-dimensional materials with high charge carrier mobility and tunable band gaps have attracted intense research effort for their potential use in nanoelectronics. Two-dimensional π-conjugated polymers constitute a promising subclass because the band structure can be manipulated by varying the molecular building blocks while preserving key features such as Dirac cones and high charge mobility. The major barriers to the application of two-dimensional π-conjugated polymers have been the small domain size and high defect density attained in the syntheses explored so far. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of mesoscale ordered two-dimensional π-conjugated polymer kagome lattices with semiconducting properties, Dirac cone structures and flat bands on Au(111). This material has been obtained by combining a rigid azatriangulene precursor and a hot dosing approach, which favours molecular diffusion and eliminates voids in the network. These results open opportunities for the synthesis of two-dimensional π-conjugated polymer Dirac cone materials and their integration into devices.

Using first-principles many-body perturbation theory, we investigate the optical properties of 8-Pmmn borophene at two levels of approximations; the GW method considering only the electron-electron interaction and the GW in combination with the Bethe-Salpeter equation including electron-hole coupling. The band structure exhibits anisotropic Dirac cones with semimetallic character. The optical absorption spectra are obtained for different light polarizations and we predict strong optical absorbance anisotropy. The absorption peaks undergo a global redshift when the electron-hole interaction is taken into account due to the formation of bound excitons which have an anisotropic excitonic wave function.

Supplementation of cooling medium with some antioxidants could be a helpful way to improve sperm quality during chilling process. The current study was aimed to assess the influence of using Mito-TEMPO in cooling medium on quality parameters and reproductive performance of sheep semen during chilling process. In this study, diluted semen samples were assigned into 5 parts, and received 0, 0.5, 5, 50 and 500 µM Mito-TEMPO. The prepared samples were stored at 5 °C up to 48 h. Chilled sperm motility, viability, abnormal morphology, mitochondrial membrane potential, membrane functionality and malondialdehyde concentration were assessed during 0, 24 and 48 h. For evaluation of reproductive performance, artificial insemination was performed via 24 h-chilled semen. In results, at time 0, no difference was observed among groups. Using 5 and 50 µM Mito-TEMPO resulted in higher (P ≤ 0.05) cooled sperm total motility, progressive motility, membrane functionality, viability and lower malondialdehyde concentration than the other groups during 24 and 48 h storage. The rate of mitochondrial membrane potential was greater (P ≤ 0.05) in treated groups with 5, 50 and 500 µM Mito-TEMPO. Pregnancy, parturition and lambing rates were higher (P ≤ 0.05) when ewes were inseminated with 24 h-chilled semen samples containing 5 and 50 µM Mito-TEMPO compared to the control group. Therefore, supplementation of cooling medium with Mito-TEMPO (5 and 50 µM) could be an efficient method to improve the quality and reproductive efficiency of ram's cooled semen during storage period.

AIMS: The current study aimed to investigate the ability of lactic acid bacteria (LABs) in removing four polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) namely, benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), benz(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (Chr) and benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF) from contaminated phosphate buffer saline (PBS). METHOD AND RESULTS: The effect of initial PAH concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20 µg ml-1 ), bacterial population (107 , 108 , 109 , 1010 CFU per ml) and pH (3, 5, 7) was studied to evaluate bacterial binding ability. All the tested bacteria could remove BaA, Chr, BbF and BaP from phosphate buffer solution and in almost all assays, removing of PAHs was as follows: BaP>Chr>BaA>BaF. Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12 had the lowest binding rate for all four PAHs, while the highest binding ability was related to Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5. Moreover, cell viability was not required for the binding ability and even acid-treated, heat-treated and ultrasonic-treated bacterial cells showed more binding ability. The results showed that the bacteria-PAH complex was irreversible after washing with PBS. CONCLUSIONS: The removal of PAHs was significantly related to pH of media, strains of bacteria, type and concentration of PAHs SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study has been focused on the reduction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using LABs and probiotics. Our results showed that not only live strains but also inactivated tested strains are able to remove PAHs from aqueous media, presenting new methods to diminish the amount of these contaminants in foods. Furthermore, the results of this study can be used in future research on evaluating the effects of oral administration of probiotic supplements and even dead probiotic strains on reducing PAHs in humans.

BACKGROUND: The increasing costs of feed has subsequently increased the costs of production of livestock, thereby decreasing the profit margin of this sector. The utilization of agro-industrial by-products has to some extent substitute some of the corn grains and soyabean meal, commonly used in animal feeds. In Malaysia, palm kernel cake (PKC) is a by-product of the oil palm industry and is frequently used to supply both crude protein (14-16% CP) and energy (11 MJ/kg) in ruminants. The energy and protein content are adequate for maintenance in the majority of ruminants. However, highly available energy supplementation is known to improve growth performance and protein deposition. This study was carried out to determine the effect on the quality of meat and fatty acid composition of the semitendinosus (ST), supraspinatus (SS), and longissimus lumborum (LL) muscles of Dorper lambs by including corn as an energy source in a basal diet of PKC urea-treated rice straw. RESULTS: The results show that the LL muscle-drip loss was greater in animals supplemented with 5% corn compared to the other groups. Higher pH values of SS and LL muscles were observed in animals supplemented with 5 and 10% corn. Furthermore, the L* value of ST muscle was increased in lambs fed on 5% corn while, reduced in those fed on 0% corn, but the a* and b* values were not significantly different in the treatment groups. The fatty acid composition of the SS muscles showed that lambs fed on 10% corn had higher levels of sum PUFA n-3 compared to those fed on 0% corn. The concentration of C18:1trans11 and CLA c12 t10 in ST muscle from the lambs fed on supplemented diets were higher than those of the controls. CONCLUSION: This study has concluded the supplementation of corn as a source of energy into a PKC urea-treated rice straw-based diet increased the PUFA concentrations of muscles as compared to control groups.

Avian avulavirus 1, better known as Newcastle disease virus (NDV), causes substantial loss to the poultry industry in many developing countries. In this study we have characterized and fully sequenced the genome of a velogenic NDV strain named Beh (Ck/IR/Beh/2011) that has been used in our lab for a number of challenge and immunological studies over the last few years. This strain was isolated from poultry in the city of Behshahr, Mazandaran Province, Iran after an outbreak reported in the region in 2011. The intracerebral pathogenicity index (ICPI) was 1.8 in one-day-old chicks, characteristic of a velogenic NDV strain. Later, the virus was purified using a sucrose gradient centrifugation and used for next-generation sequencing (NGS). The results showed that the genome length was 15192 bp, similar to those of class II velogenic strains. In addition, the phylogenetic analysis based on the complete F gene showed that the NDV strain Beh has an F protein cleavage site 112RRQKR↓ F117 and belongs to the newly identified subgenotype VII(L). Based on the biological and genetic characterization, NDV strain Beh is now the best documented reference isolate representing the novel subgenotype VII(L) in Iran. In this study, the numerical simulation of the fluid flow and acoustic field of a supersonic jet is performed by using high-order discretization and the vorticity confinement (VC) method on coarse grids. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are considered in the generalized curvilinear coordinate system and the high-order compact finite-difference scheme is applied for the space discretization, and the time integration is performed by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. A low-pass high-order filter is applied to stabilize the numerical solution. The non-reflecting boundary conditions are adopted for all the free boundaries, and the Kirchhoff surface integration is utilized to obtain the far-field sound pressure levels in a number of observer locations. Comparisons of the jet mean flow and jet aeroacoustics results with the other numerical and experimental data at similar flow conditions are made and show a reasonable agreement. The study shows that the proposed solution methodology based on the high-order compact finite-difference scheme in conjunction with the VC method can reasonably predict the near-field flow and the far-field noise of high Reynolds number jets with a fairly coarser grid than that used in the large eddy simulations and, thus, the computational cost can be significantly decreased.

In four basins of Gilan province, groundwater samples were collected from 127 piezometric wells to investigate the hydrogeochemistry of groundwater, and additionally its suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes. The average concentrations of major cations and anions follow the order of Ca2+ > Na+ > Mg2+ > K+ and [Formula: see text], respectively. Using Piper diagram delineation, CaMgHCO3 was determined as the main hydrogeochemical facies of groundwater. According to Piper diagrams, Gibbs plots, and ionic ratios, silicate weathering and ion exchange are the major processes regulating the groundwater hydrochemistry. Furthermore, saturation indices (SIs) revealed that carbonate precipitation also plays an important role in aquifers. Among the processes, weathering of silicate minerals seems to be the dominant process. Comparing the analyzed major ions and physicochemical parameters with the WHO guideline values indicates that the potability of most groundwater samples is generally acceptable. Electrical conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solid (TDS) measurements along with sodium percentage (SP), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), Kelley's index (KI), and residual sodium carbonate (RSC) calculations suggest that groundwater in many areas is suitable for irrigation use. Nonetheless, total hardness (TH) values ranging as high as 650.0 mg/l reveal many groundwater samples to be classified as hard and very hard, indicating a requirement for long-term monitoring and further evaluation. The present study shows that the groundwater quality in Lahijan, Astaneh, and to a lesser extent Fouman drainage basins is lower than in Talesh. Therefore, intense monitoring programs towards enhanced water management practices are recommended before poorer quality groundwater is further utilized.

BACKGROUND: Lichen Planus, LP, is an inflammatory disease of possible autoimmune origin affecting mainly oral and genital mucosa and skin. According to the WHO oral LP is considered a potentially malignant disorders. The p16 tumour suppressor protein can act as an inhibitor of cyclin dependent kinases 4 and 6 and thus down regulate cell cycle progression. Since the discovery of p16 several studies have evaluated its expression in various forms of human cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the expression of p16 in oral and genital LP and corresponding healthy mucosa. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 76 cases of oral LP (OLP), 34 cases of genital LP (GLP), 12 cases of healthy oral and 9 cases of healthy genital mucosa were analysed by the use of immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Data showed p16 to be highly expressed in both oral and genital LP, higher than in oral (p=0.000), and genital controls (p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that the over-expression of p16 seen in LP play a part in the histopathology of the disease.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory, immunological, mucocutaneous disease can affect skin, genital and oral mucosa. Oral lichen planus (OLP) is the most common noninfectious, chronic inflammatory oral disease affecting 1-2% of the general adult population. World Health Organization (WHO) classifies OLP as a potentially malignant disorder. Epstein Barr virus or human herpesvirus-4, is a member of the herpes virus family and one of the most ubiquitous viruses known to human, infecting approximately 90% of the world's adult population. The virus often infects B lymphocytes resulting in a wide spectrum of mucocutaneous and systemic diseases, ranging from mild lesions to aggressive malignancies. The aim of this study was to investigate expression of the EBV encoded RNAs EBER1 and EBER2 in oral and genital lichen planus and compare results with normal tissues in situ hybridization which is considered the golden standard for detection of EBER. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 68 biopsies, 25 oral LP, 26 genital LP, 10 oral controls and finally 7 genital controls were analysed using situ hybridization. RESULT: All samples had RNA as shown by the control slide, whereas no case contained neither EBER1 nor EBER2. CONCLUSIONS: Based on results from our study EBV is not involved in aetiology of lichen planus.

The objectives of this study were to test the efficacy of producing lovastatin in rice straw treated with Aspergillus terreus in larger laboratory scale following the procedure previously reported and to investigate the effectiveness of the treated rice straw containing lovastatin on methane mitigation in goats. The concentration of lovastatin in the treated rice straw was 0.69 ± 0.05 g/kg dry matter (DM) rice straw. Our results showed that supplementation of lovastatin at 4.14 mg/kg BW reduced methane production by 32% while improving the DM digestibility by 13% (P < 0.05) in goats fed fermented rice straw compared to those fed untreated rice straw. Populations of total methanogens and Methanobacteriales species were significantly reduced (P < 0.05) while the population of total bacteria and Ruminococcus albus were increased in the treatment group (P < 0.05). Our results demonstrated that lovastatin in the treated rice straw acted specifically on the methanogens by inhibiting the activity of HMG-CoA reductase in the methanogens' cell membrane biosynthesis pathway and thus the growth of rumen methanogens as previously reported. This study provides a simple yet practical approach to mitigate enteric methane production particularly in the developing countries which depend heavily on the use of agro-biomass such as rice straw to feed their ruminant animals.

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are a population of cells derived from adipose tissue. ADSCs exhibit multilineage development potential and are able to secrete various factors, which influence adjacent cells. The present study examined the protective effect of ADSC's conditioned media (ADSC-CM) on PC12 cells exposed to H2O2, an oxidative injury model. After isolation, ADSCs were cultured and their osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation confirmed. Then, PC12 cells were co-treated with ADSC-CM and H2O2. Next, the effects of ADSC-CM on neurite outgrowth and cell differentiation in the presence of H2O2 were determined. Moreover, cell viability and apoptotic cell death percentage were evaluated using MTT assay, Hoechst staining and flow cytometry. Our results indicated the neuroprotective effects of ADSC-CM on morphological and morphometrical properties of neuron-like PC12 cells. Additionally, the profound decrease in percentage of apoptotic cells confirmed the protective effects of conditioned media from ADSCs that may be related to the release of trophic factors.

The two-dimensional (2D) surface-directed self-assembly of dibenzonitrile diacetylene (DBDA) on Ag(111) under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions was investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and theoretical simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The molecule consists of two benzonitrile groups (-C6H4-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N) on each side of a diacetylene (-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-) backbone. The terminating nitrile (-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N) groups at the meta position of the phenyl rings lead to cis and trans stereoisomers. The trans isomer is prochiral and can adsorb in the R or S configuration, leading to the formation of enantiomeric self-assembled networks on the surface. We identify two simultaneously present supramolecular networks, termed parallel and chevron phases, as well as a less frequently observed butterfly phase. These networks are formed from pure R (or S) domains, racemic mixtures (RS), and cis isomers, respectively. Our complementary data illustrates that the formation of the 2D supramolecular networks is driven by intermolecular hydrogen bonding between nitrile and phenyl groups (-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]NH-C6H3). This study illustrates that the molecular arrangement of each network depends on the geometry of the isomers. The orientation of the nitrile group controls the formation of the most energetically stable network via intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Introduction: Postpartum depression is a common mental health problem that is associated with maternal suffering. The aim of this double-blind clinical trial was to compare safety and efficacy of saffron and fluoxetine in treatment of mild to moderate postpartum depression. Methods: This was a 6-week, double-blind, randomized clinical trial. Subjects were women aged 18-45 years with mild to moderate postpartum depression who had Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS 17-item) score≤18. Eligible participants were randomized to receive either a capsule of saffron (15 mg capsule) or fluoxetine (20 mg capsule) twice daily for 6 weeks. The primary outcome measure was to evaluate efficacy of saffron compared to fluoxetine in improving depressive symptoms (HDRS score). Results: There was no significant effect for time×treatment interaction on HDRS score [F (4.90, 292.50)=1.04, p=0.37] between the 2 groups. 13 (40.60%) patients in the saffron group experienced complete response (≥50% reduction in HDRS score) compared with 16 (50%) in the fluoxetine group and the difference between the 2 groups was not significant in this regard (p=0.61). Frequency of adverse events was not significantly different between the treatment groups. Discussion: The results of this study may suggest that saffron is a safe alternative medication for improving depressive symptoms of postpartum depression. Nevertheless, it should be mentioned that the trial is not well powered and should be considered a preliminary study. Therefore, large clinical trials with longer treatment periods and comparison with placebo group would be appropriate for future studies.

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of α-linolenic acid (ALA) on frozen-thawed quality and fatty acid composition of bull sperm. For that, twenty-four ejaculates obtained from three bulls were diluted in a Tris extender containing 0 (control), 3, 5, 10 and 15 ng/ml of ALA. Extended semen was incubated at 37°C for 15 min, to allow absorption of ALA by sperm cell membrane. The sample was chilled for 2 h, packed into 0.25-ml straws and frozen in liquid nitrogen for 24 h. Subsequently, straws were thawed and evaluated for total sperm motility (computer-assisted semen analysis), membrane functional integrity (hypo-osmotic swelling test), viability (eosin-nigrosin), fatty acid composition (gas chromatography) and lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS)). A higher (p < 0.05) percentage of total sperm motility was observed in ALA groups 5 ng/ml (47.74 ± 07) and 10 ng/ml (44.90 ± 0.7) in comparison with control (34.53 ± 3.0), 3 ng/ml (34.40 ± 2.6) and 15 ng/ml (34.60 ± 2.9). Still, the 5 ng/ml ALA group presented a higher (p < 0.05) percentage of viable sperms (74.13 ± 0.8) and sperms with intact membrane (74.46 ± 09) than all other experimental groups. ALA concentration and lipid peroxidation in post-thawed sperm was higher in all treated groups when compared to the control group. As such, the addition of 5 ng/ml of ALA to Tris extender improved quality of frozen-thawed bull spermatozoa.

Concerns have been expressed about the overuse of antibiotics in inpatient settings. We compared the pattern of antibiotic use in 2010 in a surgical unit of a university hospital in the Islamic Republic of Iran with similar data from 2006. Defined daily doses per 100 bed-days (DBD) were calculated. Overall use of antibiotics in our surgical unit increased significantly from a mean of 4.9 (SD 5.1) DBD in 2006 to 7.7 (SD 10.3) DBD in 2010. This increase was mainly due to increases in the use of antibiotics for treatment of infections; the prophylactic use of antibiotics did not show a significant increase. There was an increase in the consumption of ceftriaxone, imipenem, cefalotin, metronidazole and vancomycin, a decrease in the use of erythromycin and ceftazidime and no change in the use of ciprofloxacin and clindamycin. Ceftriaxone showed the greatest increase (5.1-fold) and erythromycin the sharpest decrease (8-fold) in use.

1. Successful invasion by nematode parasites is associated with several factors including egg hatching at the right time in their hosts. To determine a simple and appropriate medium for culture and egg hatching of the highly pathogenic species of the Acuariidae family, Cheilospirura hamulosa were cultured in three different media. In addition the viability of C. hamulosa eggs was determined after storage in frozen infected gizzards. 2. Eggs removed from the uteri of the female worms in infected gizzards were pooled and washed in distilled water and screened under a stereo dissecting microscope. Eggs were counted and cultured in three different media, nutrient agar, normal saline 0.9% and Bearman, at room temperature. Additionally, 10 infected gizzards were kept at -20°C for 2 and 8 months. 3. After 4-5 d there had been no growth in the nutrient agar medium, whereas 11% of the cultured eggs in the Bearman medium contained larvae 2-3 d after culturing. In 0.9% normal saline medium the two polar knobs appeared on the two poles of the eggs at 2 d post cultivation, and 74% of the eggs contained a larva on the third day. Mature larvae gradually exited from the eggs. 4. Eggs collected from female worms in gizzards frozen at -20°C were cultured in the same three culture media at room temperature. Larvae were visible in the eggs after 2-3 d in the Bearman and 0.9% normal saline media and hatched thereafter. 5. The 0.9% normal saline medium is recommended for egg hatching and cultivation of C. hamulosa due for simplicity, efficacy and cost effectiveness. Moreover, freezing of the infected gizzards at -20°C is proposed for long-term storage of the eggs.

1. Reducing excess fat accretion is important for both human health and animal production. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of arginine (Arg) on the regulation of lipogenic gene expression and on growth performance. 2. One-d-old female broiler chicks (Ross, n = 192) were used in a completely randomised design with 4 dietary treatments in which diets included 100% (CTL), 153% (LArg), 168% (MArg) and 183% (HArg) of the recommended concentration of digestible Arg. 3. Results showed that high concentrations of Arg improved body weight gain, feed efficiency, meat production, fat and crude protein content of breast muscle and plasma thyroid hormones. Conversely, abdominal fat, cholesterol, triglyceride and urea were lower with higher concentrations of Arg. Dietary arginine increased lipogenic gene expression in muscles, while decreasing those in adipose tissue and liver. 4. It was concluded that increasing Arg in the diet reduced abdominal fat content, enhanced intramuscular fat and increased muscle and protein gain. Furthermore, Arg supplementation at the MArg concentration improved growth performance, and at HArg had the greatest effect on fat reduction.
