RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate serum C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and androgen concentrations in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and compare them with the healthy group. METHODS: The present study was carried out prospectively at the Near East University Hospital, between July 15, 2019 and September 1, 2020. Out of the 90 patients aged between 18 and 40 years old who were enrolled, the final study population consisted of 36 patients with PCOS and 30 healthy women. RESULTS: Body mass index, free androgen index, serum androstenedione, total testosterone, free testosterone, and CNP were significantly higher and serum sex-hormone-binding globulin level was lower in the PCOS group. CONCLUSION: We revealed that serum CNP levels are high in PCOS patients. The mechanism of the relationship between this increase and hyperandrogenism or anovulation is not known, but these findings provide a direction for new studies. CLINICALTRIALS: GOV: NCT04006171.

RESUMO

Colorimetric determination of proteins in serum is proposed based on the biuret method and replacing ultraviolet-visible spectrometric (UV-Vis) detection with a simple and affordable smartphone digital image colorimetric (SDIC) method. Optimum SDIC conditions were found as a detection wavelength of 555 nm, a region of interest of 1600 px2, and 9.0 cm between the detection camera and sample solution. Under the optimum conditions, the coefficient of determination was 0.9982 within a linear dynamic range of 0.022 to 0.35 g dL-1. The precision of the method based on the percent relative standard deviation was below 5%. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation were found to be 0.007 and 0.022 g dL-1 respectively, which were sufficient for the quantification of the total protein, albumin, and globulin in serum. The method was validated with an independent experiment using a UV-Vis method and both methods showed good statistical agreement, indicating the accuracy of the proposed SDIC method.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries that is not practically observed in veins. There are a lot of proposed mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. We aimed to compare the lipoprotein and total cholesterol levels in aortic and venous blood samples. METHODS: A total of 125 patients ≥18 years of age were included in the study. After overnight fasting, we drew blood from the proximal ascending aorta and brachial vein. Serum lipid profiles were compared between these samples. RESULTS: Out of 125 patients, 45 (36%) were females, and 80 (64%) were males. The mean age of the patients was 62 years (24-85 years). Notably, 39 (31%) patients were using statin treatment. Coronary angiography showed that 103 (82%) patients had coronary artery disease. Mean arterial total cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein), high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels were significantly lower than mean venous total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride levels (187.3±45.3 mg/dL vs. 204.5±52.6 mg/dL, p<0.001; 116.7±41.5 mg/dL vs. 128±45 mg/dL, p<0.001; 40.8±12.9 mg/dL vs. 45.3±13.3 mg/dL, p<0.001; and 142.8±81.5 vs. 161.5±100.3 mg/dL, p<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Aortic lipoprotein and total cholesterol levels are significantly lower than venous lipoprotein and total cholesterol levels in patients presenting to the hospital for coronary angiography.

RESUMO

Aroclor 1254 (A1254), a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls, exerts hepatic, renal, and reproductive toxicity in rodents. This study aimed to determine a protective role of selenium on histopathological changes, oxidative stress, and apoptosis caused by A1254 in rat kidney. It included a control group, which received regular diet containing 0.15 mg/kg Se (C), a Se-supplemented group (SeS) receiving 1 mg/kg Se, a Se-deficient group (SeD) receiving Se-deficient diet of ≤0.05 mg/kg Se, an A1254-treated group (A) receiving 10 mg/kg of Aroclor 1254 and regular diet, an A1254-treated group receiving Se-supplementation (ASeS), and an A1254-treated group receiving Se-deficient diet (ASeD). Treatments lasted 15 days. After 24 h of the last dose of A1254, the animals were decapitated under anaesthesia and their renal antioxidant enzyme activities, lipid peroxidation (LP), glutathione, protein oxidation, and total antioxidant capacity levels measured. Histopathological changes were evaluated by light and electron microscopy. Apoptosis was detected with the TUNEL assay. Kidney weights, CAT activities, and GSH levels decreased significantly in all A1254-treated groups. Renal atrophic changes and higher apoptotic cell counts were observed in the A and ASeD groups. Both groups also showed a significant drop in GPx1 activities (A - 34.92 % and ASeD - 86.46 %) and rise in LP (A - 30.45 % and ASeD - 20.44 %) vs control. In contrast, LP levels and apoptotic cell counts were significantly lower in the ASeS group vs the A group. Histopathological changes and renal apoptosis were particularly visible in the ASeD group. Our findings suggest that selenium supplementation provides partial protection against renal toxicity of Aroclor 1254.
