RESUMO

The application of external uniform magnetic fields to ferrofluid droplets affects their magnetic order at the nanoscale as well as their shape at the macroscale, thus changing their contact angle with the surface. In this work, the effects of external uniform magnetic fields on the contact angles between different oil-based ferrofluid droplets and a handful of horizontal surfaces of varying wettability were studied. The contact angle is no longer constant around the ferrofluid droplet; rather, it varies in a rich yet predictable way. Droplets dispensed in the presence of the magnetic field on oleophobic surfaces adjust such that the contact angle increases at the front and back ends and decreases at the two perpendicular positions. The opposite behavior is reported for ferrofluid droplets on oleophilic surfaces. These direction-dependent changes in the contact angle can have a significant impact on the behavior of ferrofluid droplets on gradient surfaces where they can either diminish or enhance the surface tension gradient. Our work is fundamentally relevant to potential applications involving the controlled movement of ferrofluid droplets on surfaces like the lab-on-a-chip under the combined effects of a magnetic field and either a surface tension gradient or an electric field (i.e., electrowetting). It is important to understand how the two effects interact for the optimal utilization of these effects in future applications.

RESUMO

Sumithion (Fenitrothion) (SUM) is an organophosphorus insecticide used to combat a wide variety of plant pests. Exposure to SUM causes significant toxicity to the brain, liver, kidney, and reproductive organs through, for example, binding to DNA, and it induces DNA damage, which ends with oxidative stress. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the protective role of bee products: a mixture of honey, propolis, palm pollen, and royal jelly (HPPJ) against SUM-induced toxicity. Twenty-four male albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) were classified into four groups, each containing six rats: control (corn oil), SUM (85 mg/kg; 1/20 LD50), HPPJ, and SUM + HPPJ once daily for 28 consecutive days. Blood samples were gently collected in sterilized ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tubes for blood picture analyses and tubes without anticoagulant for serum isolation. Serum was used for assays of enzymatic and biochemical characteristics. The results revealed that SUM increased the weights of the liver, kidney, and brain as well as the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GP), serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST). Additionally, SUM significantly increased the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and γ-glutamyltransferase (γ-GT) and glucose, uric acid, and creatinine contents, while decreasing the acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity and total lipids and total protein content. Furthermore, because of the inclusion of phenolic, flavonoids, terpenoids, and sugars, the HPPJ mixture counteracted the hematological, renal, and hepatic toxicity of SUM exposure.

RESUMO

Nanostructured ZnO has been widely investigated as a gas sensing material. Antimony is an important dopant for ZnO that catalyses its surface reactivity and thus strengthens its gas sensing capability. However, there are not enough studies on the gas sensing of antimony-doped ZnO single wires. We fabricated and characterized ZnO/ZnO:Sb core-shell micro-wires and demonstrated that individual wires are sensitive to oxygen gas flow. Temperature and light illumination strongly affect the oxygen gas sensitivity and stability of these individual wires. It was found that these micro- and nano-wire oxygen sensors at 200°C give the highest response to oxygen, yet a vanishingly small effect of light and temperature variations. The underlying physics and the interplay between these effects are discussed in terms of surface-adsorbed oxygen, oxygen vacancies and hydrogen doping.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has been predominantly linked to respiratory distress syndrome, but hepatic injury has also been reported. The mechanism of liver injury is poorly understood. This review aimed to systematically review the current data through laboratory tests and liver tissue pathology to ascertain the correlation of liver involvement in SARS-CoV-2 infection patients. METHODS: The PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases were searched systematically. We included peer-reviewed published papers available online as clinical cases, cohort studies, and retrospective studies, for both in vitro and in vivo human studies. Independent extraction of the data was done by two independent authors. RESULTS: A total of 15 articles were finally included in the systematic review process and meta-analysis after exclusion of studies that did not meet the eligibility criteria, summarized in a PRISMA flow diagram. The meta-analysis showed that patients with underlying abnormal liver function and/or histopathological finding had a statistically significant 8.08 times higher odds of severe COVID-19 outcomes when data from the individual studies were pooled (OR 8.08; 95% CI,3.43, 19.03; p = 0.00001). Five of these studies showed histopathological changes on autopsy from cases with severe COVID-19, and in four of these five studies, the histopathology was associated with a history of abnormal liver function after affection with COVID-19. SHORT CONCLUSION: The study observed that the severity of COVID-19 was associated with more patients with aberrant liver function tests.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanism as well as the potential hepatoprotective effects of royal jelly (RJ) against hepatic ischemia/ reperfusion (IR) injury. METHODS: Rats were assigned into four groups; sham (received vehicle), IR (30 minutes ischemia and 45 minutes reperfusion), sham pretreated with RJ (200 mg/kg P.O.), and IR pretreated with RJ (200 mg/kg P.O.). The experiment lasted for 28 days. RESULTS: Hepatic IR significantly induced hepatic dysfunctions, as manifested by elevation of serum transaminases, ALP and LDH levels. Moreover, hepatic IR caused a significant up-regulation of P38-MAPK, NF-κB-p65, TNF-α and MDA levels along with marked down-regulation of Nrf-2, HO-1, COX-4, cytoglobin, IκBa, IL-10, GSH, GST and SOD levels. Additionally, marked histopathological changes were observed after hepatic IR injury. On the contrary, pretreatment with RJ significantly improved hepatic functions along with the alleviation of histopathological changes. Moreover, RJ restored oxidant/antioxidant balance as well as hepatic expressions of Nrf- 2, HO-1, COX-4, and cytoglobin. Simultaneously, RJ significantly mitigated the inflammatory response by down-regulation of P38-MAPK, NF-κB-p65, TNF-α expression. CONCLUSION: The present results revealed that RJ has successfully protected the liver against hepatic IR injury through modulation of cytoglobin, Nrf-2/HO-1/COX-4, and P38-MAPK/NF-κB-p65/TNF- α signaling pathways.

RESUMO

We report on the nanofabrication of patterned silver particle arrays using electron-beam lithography and the evaluation of their optical properties using backscattering and fluorescence spectroscopy. The silver particles varied in size from 100 to 250 nm and were in the shape of circles, squares, and triangles. Three inter-particle separations, 40, 65, and 90 nm as measured from the side of one particle to the side of the next particle, were used. We observed distinctive patterns of backscattering and fluorescence intensity depending on the particle size, inter-particle spacing, and excitation/emission wavelength used. Our approach allows for a study of the correlation between the backscattering intensities and fluorescence enhancement of silver particle arrays, which can be used to optimize the arrays for multi-fluorophore configuration for advanced sensing designs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Diamond-Blackfan anemia is a rare congenital hypoproliferative anemia of infancy and early childhood. Treatment with corticosteroids is commonly used, but with limited success. Trials with cyclosporin-A (CSA) are not frequently reported. Therefore, in this study we analyzed our results in the management of this rare disease by different medical treatments. DESIGN: The results of 22 patients diagnosed at our Hematology Center in the New Cairo University Children's Hospital during the period 1991-2001 were retrospectively analyzed. Our patients first received prednisolone (2 mg/kg/d) for different courses according to their response. Since the year 2000, the steroid nonresponders received CSA (3-12 mg/kg/d) for 6 months unless treatment complications developed. RESULTS: The age at the onset of the disease ranged from 1 to 24 months (median: 2.5 months). The mean values of the hemoglobin, the reticulocyte count, and the myeloid/erythroid ratio at the onset of the disease were 4.75 +/- 1.79 g/dL, 0.14 +/- 0.16, and 39.4 +/- 27.08, respectively. Patients received prednisolone from 0.25 to 10 years (median: 2 years). Ten patients were nonresponders (45.5%), and 5 patients (22.7%) responded to corticosteroid therapy. Two of 5 responders are off treatment with a hemoglobin level of >9 g/dL, and 3 of 5 are currently corticosteroid-dependent. Of 10 patients not responding to steroids, 8 received CSA for 6 months. Four patients (50%) responded to CSA therapy. A significant positive association was found between CSA dose and response. CONCLUSION: CSA therapy should be tried in steroid-resistant Diamond-Blackfan anemia patients before blood transfusion or corticosteroid therapy complications are instituted.
