BACKGROUND/AIM: Crown fractures are common traumatic dental injuries and tooth fragment reattachment is a viable option for restoring a fractured tooth. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and experience of dentists in the Federal District regarding the tooth fragment reattachment technique for enamel and dentin fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the cross-sectional observational study, an electronic form was designed with objective and self-report questions for dentists. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with their absolute and relative frequencies. For the analysis of categorical variables, the nonparametric chi-squared or Fisher exact association tests were used in the statistical software R (version 4.2.1). RESULTS: A total of 416 dentists participated in the study (58.9% female and 41.1% male). Of these, 70% declared they knew about fragment reattachment, but only 42.3% reported previous experience with this procedure. The most common storage medium used for the fractured fragment was milk (78.1%), and the bonding material used for reattachment was light-cured composite resin (86.3%). A majority (66.3%) reported that for a patient with enamel and dentin fracture, with the crown fragment in good condition, they would choose to do the reattachment. CONCLUSION: Dentists demonstrated that they had adequate knowledge about the tooth fragment technique, although many did not have previous experience with this procedure.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The fracture resistance of teeth subjected to fragment reattachment may improve when the technique is performed using intermediate materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different bonding materials, including pre-heated composite resin, on the fracture resistance of teeth subjected to the reattachment technique compared with a direct composite resin restoration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After simulating a tooth fracture, each specimen was reattached by using one of the following intermediate materials (n = 15): G0, negative control (sound teeth); G1, Z100; G2, pre-heated Z100; G3, Filtek Z350 XT; G4, pre-heated Filtek Z350 XT; G5, Filtek Z350 XT Flow; and G6, RelyX Veneer. In G7, direct class IV restorations were performed using Filtek Z350 XT composite resin. The fracture resistance was evaluated using a universal testing machine under a compressive load of 1 mm/min. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the post hoc Tukey test (5%) were conducted. RESULTS: G0 showed the highest fracture resistance, and this was statistically different from the other experimental groups (p < .05) except for G2 and G4, in which the fragments were bonded using pre-heated resins. A statistically significant difference was found between groups G1 and G6 (one-way ANOVA, p = .04). For G1 and G2, a significant difference was found between bonding with and without pre-heating (p < .05). This difference was not observed in G3 and G4 (p > .05). No statistically significant difference was found between the reattached and directly restored groups (t-test, p = .53). CONCLUSIONS: The tooth reattachment technique using pre-heated composite resin showed fracture resistance values similar to those of the sound tooth group. No difference was found between the fragment reattachment and direct composite resin techniques.

Purpose: The effect of high altitude ( ≥ 1500 m) and its potential association with mortality by COVID-19 remains controversial. We assessed the effect of high altitude on the survival/discharge of COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission for mechanical ventilation compared to individuals treated at sea level. Methods: A retrospective cohort multi-center study of consecutive adults patients with a positive RT-PCR test for COVID-19 who were mechanically ventilated between March and November 2020. Data were collected from two sea-level hospitals and four high-altitude hospitals in Ecuador. The primary outcome was ICU and hospital survival/discharge. Survival analysis was conducted using semi-parametric Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Of the study population (n = 670), 35.2% were female with a mean age of 58.3 ± 12.6 years. On admission, high-altitude patients were more likely to be younger (57.2 vs. 60.5 years old), presented with less comorbidities such as hypertension (25.9% vs. 54.9% with p-value <.001) and diabetes mellitus (20.5% vs. 37.2% with p-value <.001), less probability of having a capillary refill time > 3 sec (13.7% vs. 30.1%, p-value <.001), and less severity-of-illness condition (APACHE II score, 17.5 ± 8.1 vs. 20 ± 8.2, p < .01). After adjusting for key confounders high altitude is associated with significant higher probabilities of ICU survival/discharge (HR: 1.74 [95% CI: 1.46-2.08]) and hospital survival/discharge (HR: 1.35 [95% CI: 1.18-1.55]) than patients treated at sea level. Conclusions: Patients treated at high altitude at any time point during the study period were 74% more likely to experience ICU survival/discharge and 35% more likely to experience hospital survival/discharge than to the sea-level group. Possible reasons for these findings are genetic and physiological adaptations due to exposure to chronic hypoxia.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and cholelithiasis are highly prevalent and are associated with common risk factors such as obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and fasting glucose levels; however, it is not clear whether cholelithiasis is associated with MAFLD or fibrosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine MAFLD severity and associated risk factors in patients diagnosed with cholelithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional and prolective study (from October 2018 to March 2020) of patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy with liver biopsy, excluding other causes of hepatic disease or significant alcohol consumption. MAFLD detection was based on histology using the Kleiner score and one of the following criteria: overweight/obesity, T2DM, or evidence of metabolic dysregulation. The AST to Platelet Ratio Index, the NAFLD Fibrosis Score, the fibrosis-4 index and the hepatic steatosis index were performed to assess the relationship of non-invasive hepatic scores with histopathology. RESULTS: 80 patients median age (interquartile range) was 42 (18) years, with a BMI of 27.9 (6.11) Kg/m2. Of all patients, 58.8% had MAFLD, 78.7% were women, and 13.8% had the severe form (formerly named NASH). No substantial correlation between biochemical parameters and histopathological analysis of MAFLD and fibrosis was observed. CONCLUSION: Because cholelithiasis and MAFLD are highly prevalent diseases, it is essential to conduct studies on the relationship between both pathologies. Currently, liver biopsy is the best diagnostic method since the predictive biochemical models did not show a substantial correlation to classify MAFLD. Its early detection is relevant since a considerable percentage of advanced fibrosis (8.7%) was found.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the improvement on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of individuals with cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH) with the noncarious cervical lesion (NCCLs) subjected to different treatments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with patients (n = 74) randomly allocated into three groups according to the treatment performed: PO, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF); LL, low-power laser irradiation; and POLL, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF) associated with low-power laser irradiation. The treatments were applied in four steps, weekly. The questionnaire Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was applied before initiating and immediately after the fourth session. The greater the sum of the score, the smaller the measurement of OHRQoL. RESULTS: The total mean values of the variables at the final moment were significantly lower than the initial one for all dimensions (p value ranging from < 0.001 to 0.006). Furthermore, the OHIP-14 scores final analysis between the groups indicated that the POLL group compared to LL had a significantly lower final score for the functional limitation (p = 0.009), physical pain (p = 0.049), and psychological discomfort (p = 0.035) dimensions and that group PO compared to group LL had a significantly lower final score for the functional limitation dimension (p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: There was a reduction in the OHIP-14 score for all dimensions, indicating an improvement in patients' quality of life after the use of desensitizing therapies. Patients in group LL had a higher functional limitation, physical pain, and psychological discomfort. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study indicated improvement of desensitizing therapies for CDH to improve patients' OHRQoL. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial was registered in the Brazilian Clinical Trials Registry Platform (REBEC protocol number RBR-4ybjmt).

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are most prevalent during adolescence and infancy, and they have an important impact on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The aim of this study was to assess the effect of dental treatment and the severity of TDI on the OHRQoL of schoolchildren in public schools in Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 years in Brasilia, Brazil. The criteria used for the examinations were TDI-O'Brien criteria; Dental caries-DMFT criteria; and malocclusion-the Dental Aesthetic Index. The impact of oral health on the children's quality of life was assessed with the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14 ) that was completed by the children while on the school premises. Socio-demographic information was also collected from the parents. Statistical analysis was performed using non-parametric and association tests, as well as linear regression. RESULTS: A total of 20.2% of the students had some TDI in their permanent anterior teeth; 20% of traumatized teeth were treated, and 80% were not treated. Sorting by severity, 75.1% of the schoolchildren had a TDI involving only the enamel, and 24.9% had a TDI extending beyond the enamel. Significant differences were observed between the severity of a TDI and the total scores of CPQ11-14 (Kruskal-Wallis; p = 0.0026), emotional well-being (p = 0.0006), and social well-being (p = 0.0001) when the group with TDI extending beyond the enamel was compared with the other groups (control and with TDI involving only the enamel), even after adjustment for socio-demographic and clinical variables. For oral symptoms and functional limitation, no differences were observed among the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Dental trauma and fractures extending beyond the enamel, treated or not, have a negative impact on the OHRQoL of schoolchildren, suggesting effects on self-perception and in the social and emotional spheres.

BACKGROUND: Ductal carcinoma in situ is a non-obligate precursor of invasive breast carcinoma and presents a potential risk of over or undertreatment. Finding molecular biomarkers of disease progression could allow for more adequate patient treatment. We aimed to identify potential biomarkers that can predict invasiveness risk. METHODS: In this epithelial cell-based study archival formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded blocks from six patients diagnosed with invasive lesions (pure invasive ductal carcinoma), six with in-situ lesions (pure ductal carcinoma in situ), six with synchronous lesions (invasive ductal carcinoma with an in-situ component) and three non-neoplastic breast epithelium tissues were analyzed by gene expression profiling of 770 genes, using the nCounter® PanCancer Pathways panel of NanoString Technologies. RESULTS: The results showed that in comparison with non-neoplastic tissue the pure ductal carcinoma in situ was one with the most altered gene expression profile. Comparing pure ductal carcinoma in situ and in-situ component six differentially expressed genes were found, three of them (FGF2, GAS1, and SFRP1), play a role in cell invasiveness. Importantly, these genes were also differentially expressed between invasive and noninvasive groups and were negatively regulated in later stages of carcinogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: We propose these three genes (FGF2, GAS1, and SFRP1) as potential biomarkers of ductal carcinoma in situ progression, suggesting that their downregulation may be involved in the transition of stationary to migrating invasive epithelial cells.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of different protocols for the treatment of cervical dentin hypersensitivity (CDH) in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CONSORT checklist was used to design this study. The sample with n = 74 participants (389 NCCLs) was randomly allocated into three groups: G1, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF); G2, GaAlAs (gallium-aluminum-arsenate) low-power laser (100 mW, 808nn, 60 J/cm2); and G3, potassium oxalate (Oxa-Gel BF) associated with the GaAlAs low-power laser. The CDH was triggered by the evaporative stimulus test (EST) and by the tactile stimulus test (TST). The visual analog scale (VAS) was used to quantify the degree of CDH. Changes in sensitivity were assessed from baseline over 3 weeks. Data were analyzed for NCCLs using mixed-effects models with unstructured direct product covariance structure (α = 0.05). RESULTS: After the first application, participants from G1 and G3 had a reduction in CDH (p < 0.05) compared with group G2 for TST. After the second application, G3 participants had a reduction in CDH (p < 0.05) in relation to G2 for both stimuli. Reduction in CDH (p < 0.05) occurred over 3 weeks for EST and TST for all groups; however, there was no difference between groups at the end of the therapies. CONCLUSION: Potassium oxalate was more effective in reducing immediate CDH. After four applications, all groups showed similar results for the reduction of CDH. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: GaAlAS laser irradiation and oxalate potassium gel could reduce the symptoms of CDH; thus, they are viable alternatives for the treatment of this condition. Chemical occlusion of dental tubules showed effective results after a shorter time interval. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Dentists must regularly determine the best adhesive cementation protocol for glass-ceramic restorations on posterior teeth. The authors are aware of few in vivo follow-up studies and no meta-analyses, including clinical trials, regarding this clinically relevant topic, which merits further investigation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to statistically analyze the clinical performance of glass-ceramic posterior restorations by using a descriptive synthesis based on the integrity of the tooth and restoration under different cementation protocols for self-adhesive or conventional resin cements. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The electronic databases Cochrane, LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Science were used to identify relevant clinical trials. Non-peer-reviewed literature searches and hand searching were performed to find additional references. Language, participant's age, or time restrictions were not set. Restoration and tooth integrity were the 2 aspects considered for the meta-analysis. Statistical analyses were performed using a software program in which fixed or random effect models with risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals were applied. RESULTS: Three prospective randomized or quasirandomized clinical trials, published in English from 2012 onward, were selected and statistically analyzed. The integrity of the tooth and restoration was assessed at the baseline and 1 year after the restorative intervention. The statistical analyses did not show any significant differences between the intervention and control groups in terms of the integrity of the tooth and restoration. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis indicated no clinical differences in the ceramic cementation using a self-adhesive or conventional resin cement after the 1-year follow-up period because both resin cements showed adequate properties for tooth and restoration integrity.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Following coronal tooth fracture, keeping the fragment hydrated is of the utmost importance in the tooth fragment bonding technique. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different immersion times in different storage media on multimode adhesive bonding between reattached fragments and teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 195 bovine incisors were fractured and randomized into the following storage groups (n = 15): G0-control group (sound tooth); GA-saline solution: for 1 hour (A1) or 24 hours (A2); GB-artificial saliva: for 1 hour (B1) or 24 hours (B2); GC-coconut water: for 1 hour (C1) or 24 hours (C2); GD-tap water: for 1 hour (D1) or 24 hours (D2); GE-milk: for 1 hour (E1) or 24 hours (E2); GF-dry (dehydration): for 1 hour (F1) or 24 hours (F2). Tooth fragments were then reattached using a multimode adhesive in a self-mode technique with a flowable resin composite. Fracture resistance was evaluated in a universal testing machine under a compressive load (1 mm/min). The data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test (5%). RESULTS: The group submitted to the dehydration factor (GF) exhibited a mean value of 599.1 ± 144.2 N, while those submitted to all hydration protocols (GA, GB, GC, GD, GE) exhibited a mean value of 751.8 ± 285.4 N. Dehydration significantly affected the fracture strength values (P = .005). No significant interaction between the rewetting solutions was observed (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Hydration of the tooth fragment increased fracture resistance, regardless of the storage solution and/or immersion time.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing demand for facial esthetics, patients' expectations regarding dental treatment have increased. The treatment of maxillary median diastemas (MMDs) stands out as one of the most noticeable esthetic alterations performed on patients. The objectives of the present article were to evaluate the effects of MMD and its restorations on the esthetics of a smile and to determine the differences in esthetic perceptions among 3 different groups of patients: orthodontists, prosthodontists, and laypeople. METHODS: Printed photographic images were randomly arranged in an album that contained the original photograph of the smile, 8 photographs with digitally created diastemas (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, 3.0 mm, 4.0 mm, and 5.0 mm), and 8 with simulated restorations of these spaces. Each evaluator assigned scores to the images using a 100-mm visual analogue scale. RESULTS: Orthodontists, prosthodontists, and laypeople presented similar perceptions regarding the levels of attractiveness of the original smiles and those of smiles involving restorations of diastemas with widths of 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm. The ratings assigned to the smiles with diastemas differed significantly from those of the corresponding restored smile with the same magnitude of diastema. CONCLUSIONS: The prosthetic space closure of diastemas is better than leaving the space untreated. Restorations of MMD up to 1 mm perform similar to orthodontic closure. Larger MMDs are ideally treated with orthodontics because the restorative treatment is more invasive, leading to incremental damage to the dental tissues.

OBJECTIVES: Oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) are chronic inflammatory diseases whose symptoms can impair patient's quality of life (QoL). Psychological factors seem to play an important role in these diseases. This study aimed to determine the impact of oral health and anxiety levels on the QoL of patients with OLP and OLL. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study composed of OLP and OLL patients and a control group matched by age and sex with no autoimmune/inflammatory or malignant oral lesions. Anxiety levels and oral health impact on QoL were assessed using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) and the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), respectively. The instruments were filled through personal interview before starting the treatment for oral lesions. RESULTS: A total of 87 patients diagnosed with OLP (n = 45) and OLL (n = 42), and 87 controls were included in the study. Statistical differences were observed for the psychic and somatic anxiety dimensions between severities of diseases. Patients with OLP or OLL had higher scores for the OHIP-14 dimensions physiological discomfort and social limitation compared with controls. In addition, higher scores for physical pain, physical disability, social disability, and handicap were detected among patients with greater severity. CONCLUSION: Greater severity of OLP and OLL seems to be associated with increased levels of anxiety, higher scores of oral health impact profile, and decreased QoL. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Patients with severe OLP/OLL may benefit from additional therapeutic treatments, such as psychological and/or psychiatric management, concomitant to treatment specific to oral lesions.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Several strategies have been developed for tooth fragment reattachment following fracture. Although many techniques have been reported, there is no consensus on which one has the best results in terms of the bond strength between the fragment and the dentin over time. The aim of this study was to assess the currently reported tooth fragment reattachment techniques for fractured crowns of anterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, LILACS, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were searched in October 2016, and the search was updated in February 2017. A search of the gray literature was performed in Google Scholar and OpenGrey. Reference lists of eligible studies were cross-checked to identify additional studies; gray literature and ongoing trials were investigated. Two authors assessed studies to determine inclusion and undertook data extraction. Case reports/series of three or more cases, cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, and in vivo clinical trials in all languages were included. RESULTS: Five articles remained after screening. These studies predominantly reported on fragment reattachment with composite resin and resin cement. There was little consistency among the studies in regard to the technique used for tooth fragment reattachment and length of the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: According to the evidence found in the studies included in this review, simple tooth fragment reattachment was the preferred reattachment technique. An increase in the bond strength between tooth fragment and dentin was observed when an intermediate material was used. Further investigation is needed, using standard follow-up periods and larger samples.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fragment reattachment is a procedure that offers advantages, such as preservation of tooth structure and maintenance of color, shape, and translucency of the original tooth. The aim of this study was to analyze the reattachment techniques used to restore anterior teeth fractured by trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PubMed, LILACS, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Scopus databases were searched in October 2016, and the search was updated in February 2017. A search of the gray literature was performed in Google Scholar and OpenGrey. Reference lists of eligible studies were evaluated to identify additional studies. Two authors assessed studies for inclusion and extracted the data. In vitro studies that evaluated permanent human teeth fractured by trauma were included. RESULTS: Twenty-one studies remained after screening. The bond strength between the fragment and the crown was evaluated in 119 experimental groups. Ten different techniques were evaluated as follows: no preparation, chamfer, bevel, anchors, overcontour, internal groove, no preparation associated with chamfer after reattachment, fragment dentin removal associated with chamfer after reattachment, bevel associated with overcontour, and groove associated with shoulder. Five different materials were used to reattach the fragment: bonding system, luting composite resin, flowable composite, microhybrid composite, and nanocomposite. CONCLUSION: Fragment reattachment using a technique with no preparation and an adhesive system associated with an intermediate composite with good mechanical properties can restore part of the resistance of the fractured tooth.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The tooth fragment bonding technique, frequently used to restore traumatized teeth, may be affected by dehydration/rehydration periods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different dry and wet storage intervals on multimode adhesive bonding between reattached fragments and teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-four bovine incisors were fractured and randomized into groups (n=12). After teeth fracturing, each specimen was assigned to one of the following groups: G0: control group (sound tooth); GA1 and GA2: 1-h dehydration and a 15-min or 24-hours rewetting period, respectively; GB1 and GB2: 24-hours dehydration and a 15-minutes or 24-hours rewetting period, respectively; and GC: 1-hour (GC1) or 24-hours (GC2) dehydration period only. Tooth fragments were then reattached using a multimode adhesive in a self-mode technique with a flowable resin composite. The fracture resistance was evaluated in a universal testing machine under a compressive load (1 mm/min-1 ). Data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test (5%). RESULTS: No significant interaction between dehydration and rehydration intervals was observed (P>.05). Only the step of rehydration significantly affected the reattachment strength when compared to the groups submitted only to dehydration, regardless of the interval (15 minutes or 24 hours). CONCLUSION: Rehydrating a tooth fragment for 15 minutes before bonding with a multimode adhesive maintained sufficient moisture to increase reattachment strength.

In this study we aimed to assess the role of wild red deer, along with other ungulates such as roe deer and wild boar, in the soil's physical properties, namely soil penetration resistance and depth (used as a proxy for soil compaction), hydraulic conductivity (a proxy for water infiltration), and the proportion of soil stable aggregates. Results showed that, at the density level found in our study area, red deer have a neutral effect at the soil level, not causing significant soil compaction or significantly influencing measured soil functions.

Aim: To determine the effects of time and temperature on the viscosity of preheated composite resins. Materials and Methods: Eleven composite resins were heated to 60°C, and temperature analyses were performed at intervals of 1 min until they had cooled to 25°C. The permanent oscillatory shear test was performed at 25°C, 35°C, 50°C, and 60°C for three composite resins under a shear rate of 1s-1. One- and two-way analysis of variance were used for the analysis (α = 0.05). Results: There was no significant interaction between the composite resin and time (P = 0.9304), and only the main effect time was significantly different (P < 0.0001). A difference was observed between T0 and T6 (P < 0.001), but not after T7. The increase in temperature resulted in a viscosity reduction (P < 0.05). At 25°C, Beautifil II presented higher viscosity. Palfique LX5 showed a significant viscosity reduction with increasing temperature compared with the others (P < 0.05). For Beautifil II and Z100, there was no difference at temperatures of 50°C and 60°C, while for Palfique LX5, no statistical difference was observed at 35°C, 50°C, and 60°C. Conclusions: Ten minutes of preheating were sufficient to reach a temperature of 60°C, reducing viscosity by at least 84%. However, 5 min after removal, the composite resin cooled to room temperature. Clinical Significance: Preheating composite resin has potential benefits. To determine how this approach will work in clinical practice, it is important to define the effects of time and temperature in the protocol of this technique and understand its limitations.

Objective This study aimed to correlate the expression, by immunohistochemistry, of the proteins OPN, ABCB5, and WNT3A from anatomopathological materials obtained from paraffin blocks, slides, or both, from patients with osteosarcoma (OS), analyzing epidemiological characteristics, as well as their presence and influence on the evolution and progression of the disease. Methods After the initial case selection, we searched for the respective paraffin blocks and took only those with sufficient tumor mass to allow additional sections with no complete loss of biological material. The sarcoma area identification in representative paraffin blocks used multisample blocks (tissue microarray [TMA]) created on a BenchMark ULTRA (Roche Diagnostics Corporation, Indianapolis, IN, USA) instrument. Then, we analyzed the association between the expression of ABCB5, WNT3A, and osteopontin (OPN) markers with the variables age, location, and tissue type (Fisher exact test/Chi-squared test). Results The average age of the patients was 23 years, and the rate of males and females was the same. We analyzed 40 slides from 28 OS patients seen from 2005 to 2017. Their follow-up time was 80.0 months, and the 5-year survival rate was 46.7%. Most metastases occurred in lung tissue (92.9%). Proteins ABCB5, OPN, and WNT3A did not present statistical significance when compared with age group, neo-adjuvant, adjuvant, or both, chemotherapy, location, survival, or death. Osteopontin was negative in all samples. WNT3A expression occurred in patients who died early. Conclusion In an immunohistochemical study, ABCB5, OPN, and WNT3A did not have statistical significance. In the parameters analyzed, they did not seem to be a predictive or aggressive factor for OS.

BACKGROUND: The intensity of dengue virus (DV) replication and circulating non-structural protein 1 (NS1) levels may promote changes in the human immune response and favor severe forms of infection. We investigated the correlations between NS1 with CXCL-8, CXCL-10, IFN-γ, and IL-12p40 serum levels, and IFN-γ receptor α chain (CD119) expression, and CXCL10 production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) stimulated with recombinant IFN-γ in DV-infected patients with different clinical forms. METHODS: Dengue virus NS1, CXCL-8, CXCL-10, IFN-γ, and IL-12p40 serum levels were measured in 152 DV-infected patients with different clinical forms and 20 non-infected individuals (NI) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, we investigated the CXCL-10 production after in vitro IFN-γ stimulation of PBMCs from 48 DV-infected individuals (with different clinical forms of dengue fever) and 20 NI individuals using ELISA, and CD119 expression on CD14+ cells with flow cytometry. RESULTS: Patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) had significantly higher NS1, CXCL-8, and CXCL-10 serum levels than those with classic dengue fever (DF). The response of PBMCs to IFN-γ stimulation was lower in patients with DHF than in those with DF or dengue with complications (DWC), with lower CD119 expression and reduced CXCL-10 synthesis. In addition, these alterations are associated with high NS1 serum levels. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with DHF reported high NS1 levels, low CD119 expression, and low CXCL-10 synthesis in PBMCs, which may be associated with infection progression and severity.

RESUMO

Short tandem repeat (STR) markers on the X chromosome have a high potential for solving complex kinship analysis and individual identification cases. To achieve such purposes, allele and haplotype frequencies for the specific population are necessary. Nonetheless, such frequencies are not always available. Therefore, we obtained haplotypes from 520 unrelated males from four different geographic regions of Espírito Santo - Brazil, using the Investigator Argus X-12 kit. Forensic parameters for linked groups of four X-STR loci are reported. Genetic distance analyzes suggest that ES population is genetically closer to the Italian population and farther from the Mexican one, among the populations analyzed in this study.
