Upconverting nanoparticles are essential in modern photonics due to their ability to convert infrared light to visible light. Despite their significance, they exhibit limited brightness, a key drawback that can be addressed by combining them with plasmonic nanoparticles. Plasmon-enhanced upconversion has been widely demonstrated in dry environments, where upconverting nanoparticles are immobilized, but constitutes a challenge in liquid media where Brownian motion competes against immobilization. This study employs optical tweezers for the three-dimensional manipulation of an individual upconverting nanoparticle, enabling the exploration of plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence in water. Contrary to expectation, experiments reveal a long-range (micrometer scale) and moderate (20%) enhancement in upconversion luminescence due to the plasmonic resonances of gold nanostructures. Comparison between experiments and numerical simulations evidences the key role of Brownian motion. It is demonstrated how the three-dimensional Brownian fluctuations of the upconverting nanoparticle lead to an "average effect" that explains the magnitude and spatial extension of luminescence enhancement.

BACKGROUND: In preterm birth germinal matrix hemorrhages (GMHs) and the consequent posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH), the neuroepithelium/ependyma development is disrupted. This work is aimed to explore the possibilities of ependymal repair in GMH/PHH using a combination of neural stem cells, ependymal progenitors (EpPs), and mesenchymal stem cells. METHODS: GMH/PHH was induced in 4-day-old mice using collagenase, blood, or blood serum injections. PHH severity was characterized 2 weeks later using magnetic resonance, immunofluorescence, and protein expression quantification with mass spectrometry. Ependymal restoration and wall regeneration after stem cell treatments were tested in vivo and in an ex vivo experimental approach using ventricular walls from mice developing moderate and severe GMH/PHH. The effect of the GMH environment on EpP differentiation was tested in vitro. Two-tailed Student t or Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test was used to find differences between the treated and nontreated groups. ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare >2 groups with post hoc Tukey and Dunn multiple comparison tests, respectively. RESULTS: PHH severity was correlated with the extension of GMH and ependymal disruption (means, 88.22% severe versus 19.4% moderate). GMH/PHH hindered the survival rates of the transplanted neural stem cells/EpPs. New multiciliated ependymal cells could be generated from transplanted neural stem cells and more efficiently from EpPs (15% mean increase). Blood and TNFα (tumor necrosis factor alpha) negatively affected ciliogenesis in cells committed to ependyma differentiation (expressing Foxj1 [forkhead box J1] transcription factor). Pretreatment with mesenchymal stem cells improved the survival rates of EpPs and ependymal differentiation while reducing the edematous (means, 18% to 0.5% decrease in severe edema) and inflammatory conditions in the explants. The effectiveness of this therapeutical strategy was corroborated in vivo (means, 29% to 0% in severe edema). CONCLUSIONS: In GMH/PHH, the ependyma can be restored and edema decreased from either neural stem cell or EpP transplantation in vitro and in vivo. Mesenchymal stem cell pretreatment improved the success of the ependymal restoration.

Thermal control at small scales is critical for studying temperature-dependent biological systems and microfluidic processes. Concerning this, optical trapping provides a contactless method to remotely study microsized heating sources. This work introduces a birefringent luminescent microparticle of NaLuF4:Nd3+ as a local heater in a liquid system. When optically trapped with a circularly polarized laser beam, the microparticle rotates and heating is induced through multiphonon relaxation of the Nd3+ ions. The temperature increment in the surrounding medium is investigated, reaching a maximum heating of ≈5 °C within a 30 µm radius around the static particle under 51 mW laser excitation at 790 nm. Surprisingly, this study reveals that the particle's rotation minimally affects the temperature distribution, contrary to the intuitive expectation of liquid stirring. The influence of the microparticle rotation on the reduction of heating transfer is analyzed. Numerical simulations confirm that the thermal distribution remains consistent regardless of spinning. Instead, the orientation-dependence of the luminescence process emerges as a key factor responsible for the reduction in heating. The anisotropy in particle absorption and the lag between the orientation of the particle and the laser polarization angle contribute to this effect. Therefore, caution must be exercised when employing spinning polarization-dependent luminescent particles for microscale thermal analysis using rotation dynamics.

AIMS: This study aimed to assess the frequency of dosing inconsistencies in prescription data and the effect of four dosing assumption strategies on adherence estimates for antipsychotic treatment. METHODS: A retrospective cohort, which linked prescription and dispensing data of adult patients with ≥1 antipsychotic prescription between 2015-2016 and followed up until 2019, in Catalonia (Spain). Four strategies were proposed for selecting the recommended dosing in overlapping prescription periods for the same patient and antipsychotic drug: (i) the minimum dosing prescribed; (ii) the dose corresponding to the latest prescription issued; (iii) the highest dosing prescribed; and (iv) all doses included in the overlapped period. For each strategy, one treatment episode per patient was selected, and the Continuous Medication Availability measure was used to assess adherence. Descriptive statistics were used to describe results by strategy. RESULTS: Of the 277 324 prescriptions included, 76% overlapped with other prescriptions (40% with different recommended dosing instructions). The number and characteristics of patients and treatment episodes (18 292, 18 303, 18 339 and 18 536, respectively per strategy) were similar across strategies. Mean adherence was similar between strategies, ranging from 57 to 60%. However, the proportion of patients with adherence ≥90% was lower when selecting all doses (28%) compared with the other strategies (35%). CONCLUSION: Despite the high prevalence of overlapping prescriptions, the strategies proposed did not show a major effect on the adherence estimates for antipsychotic treatment. Taking into consideration the particularities of antipsychotic prescription practices, selecting the highest dose in the overlapped period seemed to provide a more accurate adherence estimate.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Obesity is characterized by alterations in fat and muscle mass. Phase angle (PhA) is considered an index of muscle mass, and is related to comorbidities in SO. This work aimed to assess the relationship between PhA, muscle mass, inflammation, and comorbidities in obesity. METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 198 outpatients with obesity (BMI≥30) divided into tertiles according to PhA distribution (<5°, 5°-6°, >7°). Body composition was analyzed using bioimpedance (Tanita MC-780P Multi-Frequency Segmental Body Composition Analyzer). Quantitative variables were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test and qualitative variables using the chi-square test. A correspondence analysis was built to show the influence of qualitative variables on subjects in each tertile. Patients in the lowest tertile had the lowest skeletal muscle mass and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI); the highest inflammatory index (albumin and derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, Alb-dNLR); and the highest percentage of individuals with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and heart failure (HF). The correspondence analysis showed an association between the lowest tertile and presence of HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and CKD. On the logistic regression model, ASMI (OR 0.9, 95%CI 0.85-0.95, p = 0.0004), Alb-dNLR (OR 1.04, 95%CI 1.04-16.4, p = 0.04) and HFpEF and T2DM were significantly associated with the lowest PhA. CONCLUSIONS: Identifying high-risk individuals living with obesity is a priority. These results show that lower PhA is related to inflammation, poorer skeletal muscle mass and consequently, their impact on obesity-related comorbidities and clinical outcomes.

Despite college being a critical life stage for developing enduring healthy dietary behaviours, Spanish university students show poor adherence to a healthy diet. Since research has shown an association between home cooking and healthy eating, the aim of this study was to analyse the main barriers that influence home food preparation and healthy eating among students at three Catalan universities. Focus groups, the photovoice technique and a validated questionnaire were used. Six focus groups (10 female; 14 male; aged 18-22) were conducted. NVivo9, was used to analyse the transcripts using an inductive thematic analysis. In two focus groups, the photovoice technique was used to further explore their perceptions about a healthy diet and their barriers for home cooking and healthy eating. The validated questionnaire was sent out to obtain data on students' diet quality, food environment and cooking self-efficacy for the focus group's design. We found that lack of motivation was the main barrier to healthy eating and home cooking, which was further influenced by the lack of cooking self-efficacy. Young adults lacked the knowledge and skills to prepare quick, affordable, and nutritious meals. Hence, even lack of time was cited as a primary barrier, time constraints seemed to be related to personal priorities. Students did not feel motivated to eat healthy and adopt time-deepening behaviours that influence food-choices. Thus, further research is required to develop context-specific culinary interventions that enhance students' cooking self-efficacy and identify strategies for encouraging students to adopt healthier eating habits.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke depression is the most common neuropsychiatric consequence and reduces rehabilitation effectiveness. However, the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) on mental health treatment for patients after a stroke is uncertain. AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of VR as a co-adjuvant form of treatment to reduce depression in stroke patients admitted to neurorehabilitation units. METHODS: We systematically searched medical databases including PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception to November 16, 2023. Clinical trials comparing the use of VR as an adjuvant form of treatment in stroke patients' rehabilitation with the usual treatment were included. Pooled standardized mean differences were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed according to type of stroke, VR characteristics, and the scale used to measure depression. Meta-regression analysis was performed for intervention duration and to determine the mean age of the participants. RESULTS: Eight studies and 388 stroke patients were included. The VR interventions were associated with a lower risk of depression in patients (ES = -0.69; 95% CI [-1.05, -0.33]; I2 = 57.6%; p ≤ .02). The estimates were not affected by the type of stroke, the type of VR used, the blinding process, the type of scale used to detect depression, the duration of the intervention (weeks and minutes), and the total number of sessions. Meta-regression shows that younger samples (p = .00; 95% CI [0.01, 0.08) and longer interventions (p = < .05; 95% CI [-0.00, -0.00) lead to a greater reduction in depression. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: This review provides an important basis for treating depression in patients after a stroke. Professionals working in stroke neurorehabilitation units should consider VR as a form of co-adjuvant treatment for depression in patients. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: CRD42022303968.

A hallmark of many malignant tumors is dedifferentiated (immature) cells bearing slight or no resemblance to the normal cells from which the cancer originated. Tumor dedifferentiated cells exhibit a higher capacity to survive to chemo and radiotherapies and have the ability to incite tumor relapse. Inducing cancer cell differentiation would abolish their self-renewal and invasive capacity and could be combined with the current standard of care, especially in poorly differentiated and aggressive tumors (with worst prognosis). However, differentiation therapy is still in its early stages and the intrinsic complexity of solid tumor heterogeneity demands innovative approaches in order to be efficiently translated into the clinic. We demonstrate here that microRNA 203, a potent driver of differentiation in pluripotent stem cells (ESCs and iPSCs), promotes the differentiation of mammary gland tumor cells. Combining mouse in vivo approaches and both mouse and human-derived tridimensional organoid cultures, we report that miR-203 influences the self-renewal capacity, plasticity and differentiation potential of breast cancer cells and prevents tumor cell growth in vivo. Our work sheds light on differentiation-based antitumor therapies and offers miR-203 as a promising tool for directly confronting the tumor-maintaining and regeneration capability of cancer cells.

AIM: To monitor prospectively the occurrence of colorectal anastomotic leakage (CAL) in patients with colon cancer undergoing resectional surgery, characterizing the microbiota in both faeces and mucosal biopsies of anastomosis. In a second stage, we investigated the ability to predict CAL using machine learning models based on clinical data and microbiota composition. METHOD: A total of 111 patients were included, from whom a faecal sample was obtained, as well as biopsy samples from proximal and distal sites in the healthy margins of the tumour piece. The microorganisms present in the samples were investigated using microbial culture and 16S rDNA massive sequencing. Collagenase and protease production was determined, as well as the presence of genes responsible for expressing enzymes with these activities. Machine learning analyses were developed using clinical and microbiological data. RESULTS: The incidence of CAL was 9.0%, and CAL was associated with collagenase/protease-producing Enterococcus. Significant differences were found in the microbiota composition of proximal and distal biopsy samples, but not in faecal samples, among patients who developed CAL. Clinical predictors of CAL were 5-day C-reactive protein and heart disease, whereas 3-day C-reactive protein and diabetes were negative predictors. CONCLUSION: Biopsy samples from surgical margins, rather than faecal samples, are the most appropriate samples for exploring the contribution of the intestinal microbiota to CAL. Enterococci are only enriched in the anastomosis after surgery, and their collagenases and proteases are involved in the degradation of the anastomotic scar.

Training with real patients is a critical aspect of the learning and growth of doctors in training. However, this essential step in the educational process for clinicians can potentially compromise patient safety, as they may not be adequately prepared to handle real-life situations independently. Clinical simulators help to solve this problem by providing real-world scenarios in which the physicians can train and gain confidence by safely and repeatedly practicing different techniques. In addition, obtaining objective feedback allows subsequent debriefing by analysing the situation experienced and learning from other people's mistakes. This article presents SIMUNEO, a neonatal simulator in which professionals are able to learn by practicing the management of lung ultrasound and the resolution of pneumothorax and thoracic effusions. The article also discusses in detail the hardware and software, the main components that compose the system, and the communication and implementation of these. The system was validated through both usability questionnaires filled out by neonatology residents as well as through follow-up sessions, improvement, and control of the system with specialists of the department. Results suggest that the environment is easy to use and could be used in clinical practice to improve the learning and training of students as well as the safety of patients.

This review focuses on the multiple and reciprocal relationships that exist between oxidative stress, hyperglycemia and diabetes and related metabolic disorders. Human metabolism uses most of the consumed glucose under aerobic conditions. Oxygen is needed in the mitochondria to obtain energy, as well as for the action of microsomal oxidases and cytosolic pro-oxidant enzymes. This relentlessly generates a certain amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although ROS are intracellular signals necessary for some physiological processes, their accumulation leads to oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, and progressive resistance to insulin. A cellular pro-oxidant versus an antioxidant equilibrium would regulate ROS levels, but oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, and pro-inflammatory conditions feed back to each other and the relevance of the interconnections tends to increase those conditions. Hyperglycemia promotes collateral glucose metabolism through protein kinase C, polyols and hexosamine routes. In addition, it also facilitates spontaneous glucose auto-oxidation and the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which in turn interact with their receptors (RAGE). The mentioned processes undermine cellular structures, finally giving place to a progressively greater degree of oxidative stress with further hyperglycemia, metabolic alterations, and diabetes complications. NFκB is the major transcription factor involved in the expression of most of the pro-oxidant mediators, while Nrf2 is the major transcription factor regulating the antioxidant response. FoxO is also involved in the equilibrium, but its role is controversial. This review summarizes the key factors linking the diverse glucose metabolic routes enhanced in hyperglycemia with ROS formation and vice versa, emphasizing the role of the major transcription factors involved in the desirable balance between pro-oxidant and antioxidant proteins.

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) plays a crucial role in brain water circulation and is considered a therapeutic target in hydrocephalus. Congenital hydrocephalus is associated with a reaction of astrocytes in the periventricular white matter both in experimental models and human cases. A previous report showed that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) transplanted into the lateral ventricles of hyh mice exhibiting severe congenital hydrocephalus are attracted by the periventricular astrocyte reaction, and the cerebral tissue displays recovery. The present investigation aimed to test the effect of BM-MSC treatment on astrocyte reaction formation. BM-MSCs were injected into the lateral ventricles of four-day-old hyh mice, and the periventricular reaction was detected two weeks later. A protein expression analysis of the cerebral tissue differentiated the BM-MSC-treated mice from the controls and revealed effects on neural development. In in vivo and in vitro experiments, BM-MSCs stimulated the generation of periventricular reactive astrocytes overexpressing AQP4 and its regulatory protein kinase D-interacting substrate of 220 kDa (Kidins220). In the cerebral tissue, mRNA overexpression of nerve growth factor (NGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF1α), and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFß1) could be related to the regulation of the astrocyte reaction and AQP4 expression. In conclusion, BM-MSC treatment in hydrocephalus can stimulate a key developmental process such as the periventricular astrocyte reaction, where AQP4 overexpression could be implicated in tissue recovery.

Starting from commercially available ketones, a reproducible and reliable strategy for the synthesis of tetrasubstituted nitroalkenes was successfully developed, using a two-step procedure; the HWE olefination of the ketone to form the corresponding α,ß-unsaturated esters is followed by a nitration reaction to introduce the nitro group in the α position of the ester group. The enantioselective organocatalytic reduction of these compounds has also been preliminarily studied, to access the functionalized enantioenriched nitroalkanes, which are useful starting materials for further synthetic elaborations. The absolute configuration of the reduction product was established by chemical correlation of the chiral nitroalkane with a known product; preliminary DFT calculations were also conducted to rationalize the stereochemical outcome of the organocatalytic enantioselective reduction.

A 76-year-old man presented with dysphagia, epigastric pain and weight loss for the last two months. Heavy sweating was also presented. Past medical conditions included type 2 diabetes. He had no evidence of any immunosupressive disease including HIV infection. Physical examination only revealed low-grade fever. Laboratory data showed leukocytosis. Gastroscopy evidenced a complete esophageal stenosis starting at 30 cm, with a severely friable mucosa of malignant appearance. The results of biopsies were insufficient for diagnosis of malignancy. Computed tomography demonstrated a 10-cm irregular tumor located in the distal and middle thirds of the esophagus, which resulted in narrowing of the lumen. Involving tracheal carina, bronchus, and descending aorta were observed. Perforation signs were also seen. Distant metastases were not found. Empirical treatment with piperacillin/tazobactan was started. A surgical gastrostomy to allows nutritional support was performed. Two other gastroscopies were performed resulting in an inconclusive diagnosis. Finally, flow cytometry performed in samples obtained by endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsy evidenced prominent clonal B-cell populations consistent with extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma exhibing CD10 expression. A treatment with Rituximab in combination with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) was started. Primary esophageal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a variant of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, accounts for less than 1% of all cases of gastrointestinal lymphomas.

Lithium is a mood stabilizer recommended by most clinical guidelines as the gold standard to prevent relapses in the treatment of Bipolar Affective Disorder. It is highly effective, but unfortunately, it causes adverse effects at several levels, including the skin. AIM: To review the frequency, presentation, evolution, and management of adverse dermatologic effects caused by this drug. METHODS: We performed a narrative review using Scielo, Web of Science (WoS), and Google Scholar search engines, using keywords in Spanish and English. RESULTS: The skin presentations that appear most frequently are the progression of previously existing or newly diagnosed psoriasis, alopecia, acne, follicular inflammation, and maculopapular eruptions. CONCLUSIONS: Lithium produces and/or exacerbates a series of dermatological conditions of different severity, even at therapeutic levels, which are not usually severe but, even so, should not be underestimated since it can affect adherence to the drug.

Lanthanide-based upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) are trustworthy workhorses in luminescent nanothermometry. The use of UCNPs-based nanothermometers has enabled the determination of the thermal properties of cell membranes and monitoring of in vivo thermal therapies in real time. However, UCNPs boast low thermal sensitivity and brightness, which, along with the difficulty in controlling individual UCNP remotely, make them less than ideal nanothermometers at the single-particle level. In this work, it is shown how these problems can be elegantly solved using a thermoresponsive polymeric coating. Upon decorating the surface of NaYF4 :Er3+ ,Yb3+ UCNPs with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), a >10-fold enhancement in optical forces is observed, allowing stable trapping and manipulation of a single UCNP in the physiological temperature range (20-45 °C). This optical force improvement is accompanied by a significant enhancement of the thermal sensitivity- a maximum value of 8% °C+1 at 32 °C induced by the collapse of PNIPAM. Numerical simulations reveal that the enhancement in thermal sensitivity mainly stems from the high-refractive-index polymeric coating that behaves as a nanolens of high numerical aperture. The results in this work demonstrate how UCNP nanothermometers can be further improved by an adequate surface decoration and open a new avenue toward highly sensitive single-particle nanothermometry.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the impact of clinical and metabolic parameters derived from 18F-FDG PET/CT (positron emission tomography-computed tomography) in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) on prognosis. METHODS: Patients with LACC of stage IB2-IVA treated by primary radiochemotherapy followed by brachytherapy were enrolled in this retrospective study. Indexes derived from standardized uptake value (SUV), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), and textural features of the primary tumor were measured for each patient. Overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were calculated according to Kaplan-Meier and survival curves were compared using the log-rank test. Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed using the Cox regression model. RESULTS: A total of 116 patients were included. Median follow-up was 58 months (range: 1-129). A total of 36 (31%) patients died. Five-year OS and RFS rates were 69 and 60%, respectively. Univariate analyses indicated that FIGO stage, the presence of hydronephrosis, high CYFRA 21.1 levels, and textural features had a significant impact on OS and RFS. MTV as well as SCC-Ag concentration were also significantly associated with OS. On multivariate analysis, the presence of hydronephrosis, CYFRA 21.1, and sphericity were independent prognostics factors for OS and RFS. Also, SCC-Ag level, MTV, and GLZLM (gray-level zone length matrix) ZLNU (zone length non-uniformity) were significantly associated with OS. CONCLUSION: Classical prognostic factors and tumor heterogeneity on pretreatment PET/CT were significantly associated with prognosis in patients with LACC.

OBJETIVO: Proporcionar recomendaciones para la detección temprana de pacientes con alto riesgo de desarrollar cáncer de pulmón (CP) en el primer nivel de atención y su referencia oportuna. Material y métodos. Se realizó una búsqueda detallada de la evidencia científica disponible para responder las preguntas de investigación clínica y se utilizó el Panel Delphi modificado para lograr un consenso entre expertos. RESULTADOS: Se generaron 14 recomendaciones siguiendo los estándares de una GPC. Conclusión. El CP representa un problema de salud pública en México; por ello, esta guía establece recomendaciones que apoyan la toma de decisiones sobre la detección precoz y la referencia de pacientes con sospecha de CP en el primer nivel de atención.

BACKGROUND: The effects of stress on surgical residents and how stress management training can prepare residents to effectively manage stressful situations is a relevant topic. This systematic review aimed to analyze the literature regarding (1) the current stress monitoring tools and their use in surgical environments, (2) the current methods in surgical stress management training, and (3) how stress affects surgical performance. METHODS: A search strategy was implemented to retrieve relevant articles from Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. The 787 initially retrieved articles were reviewed for further evaluation according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria (Prospero registration number CRD42021252682). RESULTS: Sixty-one articles were included in the review. The stress monitoring methods found in the articles showed heart rate analysis as the most used monitoring tool for physiological parameters while the STAI-6 scale was preferred for psychological parameters. The stress management methods found in the articles were mental-, simulation- and feedback-based training, with the mental-based training showing clear positive effects on participants. The studies analyzing the effects of stress on surgical performance showed both negative and positive effects on technical and non-technical performance. CONCLUSIONS: The impact of stress responses presents an important factor in surgical environments, affecting residents' training and performance. This study identified the main methods used for monitoring stress parameters in surgical educational environments. The applied surgical stress management training methods were diverse and demonstrated positive effects on surgeons' stress levels and performance. There were negative and positive effects of stress on surgical performance, although a collective pattern on their effects was not clear.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychometric properties and cross-group equivalence of scores from Spanish and English long and short forms of the Scale of Ethnic Experience (SEE; Malcarne et al., 2006) in a multisite representative cohort from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Sociocultural Ancillary Study. METHOD: Hispanic/Latino adults (N = 5,313) completed a battery of measures, including the original 32-item SEE, in their preferred language of Spanish or English. A 12-item version of the SEE, comprised of three items representing each of the four original subscales, was created and evaluated for invariance across language and self-identified heritage (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central American, Dominican, and South American). Internal consistency reliability and convergent/discriminant validity of the subscales were also evaluated. RESULTS: Results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) did not support the four-subscale structure of the original 32-item SEE (Ethnic Identity, Perceived Discrimination, Social Affiliation, and Mainstream Comfort). Multigroup CFA supported the structural invariance of the SEE-Short Form across language and heritage groups. Patterns for convergent and discriminant validity were generally within expected effect sizes and directions, and consistent across language and heritage. CONCLUSIONS: Psychometric findings support the utility of the newly developed 12-item short form of the SEE for measuring multiple dimensions of ethnic experience in Hispanic/Latino adults in the United States.
