BACKGROUND: Co-exposure to air pollution and neighborhood disadvantage may influence cognition decline. We tested these associations in the context of dementia risk. METHODS: We leveraged a cohort of adults ≥65 years (n = 5397) enrolled from 2011 to 2018 in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). Particulate matter (PM) ≤ 10 µm in diameter, PM ≤ 2.5 µm in diameter, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, and nitrogen dioxide - and neighborhood disadvantage were tested for joint associations with dementia risk. Pollutant concentrations at the 2010 census tract level were assigned using the US Environmental Protection Agency's Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System. Neighborhood disadvantage was defined using the tract Social Deprivation Index (SDI). Dementia was determined through self- or proxy-report or scores indicative of "probable dementia" according to NHATS screening tools. Joint effects of air pollutants and SDI were tested using quantile g-computation Cox proportional hazards models. We also stratified joint air pollution effects across SDI tertiles. Analyses adjusted for age at enrollment, sex, education, partner status, urbanicity, income, race and ethnicity, years at residence, census segregation, and census region. RESULTS: SDI score (aHR = 1.08; 95% CI 0.96, 1.22), joint air pollution (aHR = 1.03, 95% CI 0.92, 1.16) and joint SDI with air pollution (aHR = 1.04, 95% CI 0.89, 1.22) were not associated with dementia risk. After accounting for competing risk of death, joint SDI with air pollution was not associated with dementia risk (aHR = 1.06; 95% CI 0.87, 1.29). In stratified models, joint air pollution was associated with greater risk of dementia at high (aHR = 1.19; 95% CI 0.87, 1.63), but not at medium or low SDI. CONCLUSION: Air pollution was associated with greater dementia risk in disadvantaged areas after accounting for competing risks. Air pollution associations with dementia incidence may be attenuated when other risk factors are more prominent in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

BACKGROUND: Unconventional natural gas development (UNGD) introduces physical and psychosocial hazards into communities, which could contribute to psychosocial stress in adolescents and an increased risk of internalizing disorders, common and impactful health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate associations between a 180-day composite UNGD activity metric and new onset of internalizing disorders, overall and separately for anxiety and depressive disorders, and effect modification by sex. METHODS: We used a nested case-control design from 2008 to 2016 in 38 Pennsylvania counties using electronic health records from adolescent Geisinger subjects. Cases were defined by at least two diagnoses or medication orders indicating new onset of an internalizing disorder, and controls frequency-matched 4:1 on age, sex, and year. To evaluate associations, we used generalized estimating equations, with logit link, robust standard errors, and an exchangeable correlation structure within community. RESULTS: We identified 7,974 adolescents (65.9% female, mean age 15.0 years) with new onset internalizing disorders. There were no associations when we used data from the entire study period. When restricted to years with higher UNGD activity (2010-2016), comparing the highest to lowest quartile, UNGD activity was associated (odds ratio [95% confidence level]) with new onset internalizing disorders (1.15 [1.06, 1.25]). Associations were slightly stronger for depressive disorders. Associations were only present in females (p = 0.009). DISCUSSION: This is the first epidemiologic study of UNGD in relation to adolescent mental health, an important health outcome in a potentially susceptible group to the environmental and community impacts of UNGD. UNGD activity was associated with new onset internalizing disorders in females in this large sample in an area of active UNGD.

Background: Maternal nutrient intake may moderate associations between environmental exposures and children's neurodevelopmental outcomes, but few studies have assessed joint effects. We aimed to evaluate whether prenatal nutrient intake influences the association between air pollutants and autism-related trait scores. Methods: We included 126 participants from the EARLI (Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation, 2009-2012) cohort, which followed US pregnant mothers who previously had a child with autism. Bayesian kernel machine regression and traditional regression models were used to examine joint associations of prenatal nutrient intake (vitamins D, B12, and B6; folate, choline, and betaine; and total omega 3 and 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, reported via food frequency questionnaire), air pollutant exposure (particulate matter <2.5 µm [PM2.5], nitrogen dioxide [NO2], and ozone [O3], estimated at the address level), and children's autism-related traits (measured by the Social Responsiveness Scale [SRS] at 36 months). Results: Most participants had nutrient intakes and air pollutant exposures that met US standards. Bayesian kernel machine regression mixture models and traditional regression models provided little evidence of individual or joint associations of nutrients and air pollutants with SRS scores or of an association between the overall mixture and SRS scores. Conclusion: In this cohort with a high familial likelihood of autism, we did not observe evidence of joint associations between air pollution exposures and nutrient intake with autism-related traits. Future work should examine the use of these methods in larger, more diverse samples, as our results may have been influenced by familial liability and/or relatively high nutrient intakes and low air pollutant exposures.

We evaluated associations of community types and features with new-onset internalizing disorders among Pennsylvania adolescents to identify the location and scale of risk. Using a nested case-control study, we drew subjects from electronic health records 2008-2016, requiring cases (n = 7974) to have two medication orders or diagnoses indicating an internalizing disorder; controls (n = 31,895) were frequency-matched. Subjects were assigned to three community classifications: townships, boroughs, city census tracts; urbanized areas, urban clusters, rural areas; and a combination. Using logistic regression with generalized estimating equations, we found that compared to rural-townships, the highest odds were in urban cluster-city census tracts (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval: 1.78, 1.41-2.26); lowest in urbanized area-city census tracts (0.85, 0.74-0.97). Higher community socioeconomic deprivation was associated with increased odds in urban clusters (1.21, 1.00-1.48) and higher greenness with decreased odds in urban clusters (0.73, 0.62-0.86).

Few food waste interventions focus on drivers distinct to particular food groups, such as seafood. Given suggestive evidence that seafood may be wasted at exceptionally high rates, and given its environmental, economic and nutritional value, this research provides insights into seafood-specific consumer food waste interventions. We performed three complementary sub-studies to examine consumer and retailer views regarding seafood waste and frozen seafood as well as perceptions of an intervention providing chef-created recipes to promote cooking frozen seafood without defrosting. The findings indicated an openness to a direct-from-frozen intervention among many consumers and retailers, and suggested seven potential barriers to adoption, along with ways to address them. Underlying the potential for this intervention, and more broadly contributing to addressing consumer seafood waste, the research formed the basis of a new "4 Ps" concept model to characterize the drivers of discarded seafood: proficiency, perceptions/knowledge, perishability, and planning/convenience. These factors shape waste through pathways that include behavioral protocols; taste preferences; waste-prevention efforts; and food safety concerns, precautions, and errors. This research suggested the benefit of testing a larger-scale direct-from-frozen intervention using insights from the concept model and, more broadly, the benefits of exploring approaches to food waste prevention rooted in specific food groups.
