RESUMO

The variation in pore size in mesoporous films produced by electrochemically assisted self-assembly (EASA) with the surfactant chain length is described. EASA produces a hexagonal array of pores perpendicular to the substrate surface by using an applied potential to organize cationic surfactants and the resultant current to drive condensation in a silica sol. Here, we show that a range of pore sizes between 2 and 5 nm in diameter is available with surfactants of the form [Me3NCnH2n+1]Br, with alkyl chain lengths between C14 and C24. The film quality, pore order, pore size, and pore accessibility are probed with a range of techniques.

RESUMO

Feedbacks are an essential feature of resilient socio-economic systems, yet the feedbacks between biodiversity, ecosystem services and human wellbeing are not fully accounted for in global policy efforts that consider future scenarios for human activities and their consequences for nature. Failure to integrate feedbacks in our knowledge frameworks exacerbates uncertainty in future projections and potentially prevents us from realizing the full benefits of actions we can take to enhance sustainability. We identify six scientific research challenges that, if addressed, could allow future policy, conservation and monitoring efforts to quantitatively account for ecosystem and societal consequences of biodiversity change. Placing feedbacks prominently in our frameworks would lead to (i) coordinated observation of biodiversity change, ecosystem functions and human actions, (ii) joint experiment and observation programmes, (iii) more effective use of emerging technologies in biodiversity science and policy, and (iv) a more inclusive and integrated global community of biodiversity observers. To meet these challenges, we outline a five-point action plan for collaboration and connection among scientists and policymakers that emphasizes diversity, inclusion and open access. Efforts to protect biodiversity require the best possible scientific understanding of human activities, biodiversity trends, ecosystem functions and-critically-the feedbacks among them.

RESUMO

Electrodeposition is a powerful tool for the bottom-up fabrication of novel electronic devices. This necessitates a complete understanding of the deposition process beyond the classical description using current transients. Recent calculations predict deviations within the spatial arrangement of electrodeposited particles, away from random nucleation. The spatial arrangement of Au particles generated through aqueous electrodeposition on a nontemplated substrate is investigated by grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). We show that GISAXS is able to reveal spatial correlations within deposited particles that are not easily detectable by microscopy.

RESUMO

Climate is widely recognised as an important determinant of the latitudinal diversity gradient. However, most existing studies make no distinction between direct and indirect effects of climate, which substantially hinders our understanding of how climate constrains biodiversity globally. Using data from 35 large forest plots, we test hypothesised relationships amongst climate, topography, forest structural attributes (stem abundance, tree size variation and stand basal area) and tree species richness to better understand drivers of latitudinal tree diversity patterns. Climate influences tree richness both directly, with more species in warm, moist, aseasonal climates and indirectly, with more species at higher stem abundance. These results imply direct limitation of species diversity by climatic stress and more rapid (co-)evolution and narrower niche partitioning in warm climates. They also support the idea that increased numbers of individuals associated with high primary productivity are partitioned to support a greater number of species.

RESUMO

We have recently reported a new method for the electrodeposition of thin film and nanostructured phase change memory (PCM) devices from a single, highly tuneable, non-aqueous electrolyte. The quality of the material was confirmed by phase cycling via electrical pulsed switching of both 100 nm nano-cells and thin film devices. This method potentially allows deposition into extremely small confined cells down to less than 5 nm, 3D lay-outs that require non-line-of-sight techniques, and seamless integration of selector devices. As electrodeposition requires a conducting substrate, the key condition for electronic applications based on this method is the use of patterned metal lines as the working electrode during the electrodeposition process. In this paper, we show the design and fabrication of a 2D passive memory matrix in which the word lines act as the working electrode and nucleation site for the growth of confined cells of Ge-Sb-Te. We will discuss the precursor requirement for deposition from non-aqueous, weakly coordinating solvents, show the transmission electron microscopy analysis of the electrodeposition growth process and elemental distribution in the deposits, and show the fabrication and characterisation of the Ge-Sb-Te memory matrix.

RESUMO

Titanium tetrachloride is reacted with hydroxide groups on cellulose (cotton wool) before firing to convert the cellulose to hard carbon. Hard carbon-nanocrystalline titanium nitride composites with a good distribution of the titanium across the fibrous hard carbon structure were obtained by firing the treated cellulose under nitrogen. Hard carbon-nanocrystalline titanium carbide composites were obtained by firing under argon. The composites were tested as anode materials for sodium ion batteries, and the HC-TiN composite delivers a better capacity retention than that of hard carbon over 50 cycles. The synthesis method demonstrated here provides an effective route to composites of metal nitrides and carbides with carbon that may be of interest for other energy technologies as well as for sodium batteries.

RESUMO

Electrodeposition of Sn from supercritical difluoromethane has been performed into anodic alumina templates with pores down to 3 nm in diameter and into mesoporous silica templates with pores of diameter 1.5 nm. Optimized deposits have been characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy (bright field, high-angle annular dark field, and energy-dispersive X-ray elemental mapping). Crystalline 13 nm diameter Sn nanowires have been electrodeposited in symmetric pore anodic alumina. Direct transmission electron microscopy evidence of sub 7 nm Sn nanowires in asymmetric anodic alumina has been obtained. These same measurements present indirect evidence for electrodeposition through 3 nm constrictions in the same templates. A detailed transmission electron microscopy study of mesoporous silica films after Sn deposition is presented. These indicate that it is possible to deposit Sn through the 1.5 nm pores in the mesoporous films, but that the nanowires formed are not stable. Suggestions of why this is the case and how such extreme nanowires could be stabilized are presented.

RESUMO

Natural specimens of the pyrochlore (A2B2O7) compounds have been found to retain foreign actinide impurities within their parent framework, undergoing metamictization to a fully amorphous state. The response to radionuclide decay identifies pyrochlore systems with having high radiation tolerance and tailored use in radioactive waste applications and radionuclide sequestration. High pressure is a powerful pathway to high density states and amorphization with parallels to radiation-induced processes. Here, La2Sn2O7 is evaluated under extreme conditions via the combination of laser heating in a diamond anvil cell with X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The measurements are supported by ab initio random structure searching and molecular dynamics calculations. A new ground state at 70 GPa is revealed, and high temperature annealing is fundamental to access its crystalline ground state and fully determine the structure. This crystalline phase ( P21/ c) retains its structural integrity during decompression and is fully recoverable to ambient conditions. The final state of the system is shown to be highly pathway dependent due to the covalent nature of the Sn-O bonding. The Tc pyrochlore, La2Tc2O7, is analyzed for similarities in the bonding to determine the likelihood of an analogous pathway dependency to a final state.

RESUMO

The application of pressure allows systematic tuning of the charge density of a material cleanly, that is, without changes to the chemical composition via dopants, and exploratory high-pressure experiments can inform the design of bulk syntheses of materials that benefit from their properties under compression. The electronic and structural response of semiconducting tin nitride Sn3 N4 under compression is now reported. A continuous opening of the optical band gap was observed from 1.3 eV to 3.0 eV over a range of 100 GPa, a 540 nm blue-shift spanning the entire visible spectrum. The pressure-mediated band gap opening is general to this material across numerous high-density polymorphs, implicating the predominant ionic bonding in the material as the cause. The rate of decompression to ambient conditions permits access to recoverable metastable states with varying band gaps energies, opening the possibility of pressure-tuneable electronic properties for future applications.

RESUMO

For the first time, a versatile electrolyte bath is described that can be used to electrodeposit a wide range of p-block elements from supercritical difluoromethane (scCH2 F2 ). The bath comprises the tetrabutylammonium chlorometallate complex of the element in an electrolyte of 50×10(-3)  mol dm(-3) tetrabutylammonium chloride at 17.2 MPa and 358 K. Through the use of anionic ([GaCl4 ](-) , [InCl4 ](-) , [GeCl3 ](-) , [SnCl3 ](-) , [SbCl4 ](-) , and [BiCl4 ](-) ) and dianionic ([SeCl6 ](2-) and [TeCl6 ](2-) ) chlorometallate salts, the deposition of elemental Ga, In, Ge, Sn, Sb, Bi, Se, and Te is demonstrated. In all cases, with the exception of gallium, which is a liquid under the deposition conditions, the resulting deposits are characterised by SEM, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. An advantage of this electrolyte system is that the reagents are all crystalline solids, reasonably easy to handle and not highly water or oxygen sensitive. The results presented herein significantly broaden the range of materials accessible by electrodeposition from supercritical fluid and open up the future possibility of utilising the full scope of these unique fluids to electrodeposit functional binary or ternary alloys and compounds of these elements.

RESUMO

The production of thin mesoporous silica films with small (∼2-3 nm) pores oriented perpendicular to a titanium nitride growth surface is demonstrated using two methods. These are the growth from a Stöber silica solution with surfactant ordering at the surface of the electrode, and electrochemically assisted growth from an acidic sol achieved by polarisation of the electrode surface. The thickness, pore order and pore size that can be achieved with these two methods is contrasted. A number of methods to vary the pore size by using different surfactants and swelling agents are explored. The advantage of applying these growth methods on titanium nitride surfaces is that it provides access to a wider electrochemical window for nanowire growth and sensor applications with non-aqueous electrolytes whilst retaining good film growth and adhesion properties.

RESUMO

Nanostructures synthesised by hard-templating assisted methods are advantageous as they retain the size and morphology of the host templates which are vital characteristics for their intended applications. A number of techniques have been employed to deposit materials inside porous templates, such as electrodeposition, vapour deposition, lithography, melt and solution filling, but most of these efforts have been applied with pore sizes higher in the mesoporous regime or even larger. Here, we explore atomic layer deposition (ALD) as a method for nanostructure deposition into mesoporous hard templates consisting of mesoporous silica films with sub-5 nm pore diameters. The zinc oxide deposited into the films was characterised by small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis.

RESUMO

A series of ruthenium iron nitride phases with Ru:Fe ratios of ca. 1:3 were synthesized by ammonolysis. When the ammonolysis temperature was above 500°C, the obtained RuxFe3Ny materials had a ε-Fe3N (P6322) structure, while two similar phases were present when the ammonolysis was lower than 500°C. Powder neutron diffraction identified one phase as relating to the ε-Fe3N structure, while the other had a disordered NiAs-type (P63/mmc) structure. These ternary metal nitrides show ammonia synthesis activity at low temperature (200°C-300°C) and ambient pressure, which can be related to the loss of lattice nitrogen. Steady state catalytic performance at 400°C is associated with ruthenium-iron alloy. Additionally, density functional theory calculations were performed using an approximate model for the disordered hexagonal phase, revealing that this phase is more stable than a cubic anti-perovskite phase which has been previously investigated computationally, and corroborating the experimental findings of the present work.

RESUMO

In response to the growing need for efficient processing of temporal information, neuromorphic computing systems are placing increased emphasis on the switching dynamics of memristors. While the switching dynamics can be regulated by the properties of input signals, the ability of controlling it via electrolyte properties of a memristor is essential to further enrich the switching states and improve data processing capability. This study presents the synthesis of mesoporous silica (mSiO2) films using a sol-gel process, which enables the creation of films with controllable porosities. These films can serve as electrolyte layers in the diffusive memristors and lead to tunable neuromorphic switching dynamics. The mSiO2 memristors demonstrate short-term plasticity, which is essential for temporal signal processing. As porosity increases, discernible changes in operating currents, facilitation ratios, and relaxation times are observed. The underlying mechanism of such systematic control was investigated and attributed to the modulation of hydrogen-bonded networks within the porous structure of the silica layer, which significantly influences both anodic oxidation and ion migration processes during switching events. The result of this work presents mesoporous silica as a unique platform for precise control of neuromorphic switching dynamics in diffusive memristors.

RESUMO

Herein, we report a general route for the uniform coating of hard carbon (HC) powders via fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition. Carbon-based fine powders are excellent substrate materials for many catalytic and electrochemical applications but intrinsically difficult to fluidize and prone to elutriation. The reactor was designed to achieve as much retention of powders as possible, supported by a computational fluid dynamics study to assess the hydrodynamic behavior for varying gaseous flow rates. Solutions of the tin seleno- and thio-ether complexes [SnCl4{nBuSe(CH2)3SenBu}] and [SnCl4{nBuS(CH2)3SnBu}] were used as single source precursors and injected at high temperature into a fluidized bed of HC powders under nitrogen flow. The method allowed for the synthesis of HC-SnSx-SnSe2 composites at the gram scale with potential applications in electrocatalysis and sodium-ion battery anodes.

RESUMO

The process of electrochemically assisted surfactant assembly was followed in real time by grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering with the aim to deconvolute the formation of mesoporous silica film and unwanted porous particles. The X-ray technique proved to be useful for the characterisation of this process, as it takes place at a very dynamic, solid/liquid interface. This paper shows the electrochemically driven onset and evolution of silica/surfactant structures. Additional control experiments indicate the formation of vertically aligned structures without the use of an electric field, although it seems to be beneficial for increased pore ordering.

RESUMO

Hf3N4 in nanocrystalline form is produced by solution phase reaction of Hf(NEtMe)4 with ammonia followed by low-temperature pyrolysis in ammonia. Understanding of phase behavior in these systems is important because early transition-metal nitrides with the metal in maximum oxidation state are potential visible light photocatalysts. A combination of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function studies has been used to show this phase to have a tetragonally distorted fluorite structure with 1/3 vacancies on the anion sites. Laser heating nanocrystalline Hf3N4 at 12 GPa and 1500 K in a diamond anvil cell results in its crystallization with the same structure type, an interesting example of prestructuring of the phase during preparation of the precursor compound. This metastable pathway could provide a route to other new polymorphs of metal nitrides and to nitrogen-rich phases where they do not currently exist. Importantly it leads to bulk formation of the material rather than surface conversion as often occurs in elemental combination reactions at high pressure. Laser heating at 2000 K at a higher pressure of 19 GPa results in a further new polymorph of Hf3N4 that adopts an anion deficient cottunite-type (orthorhombic) structure. The orthorhombic Hf3N4 phase is recoverable to ambient pressure and the tetragonal phase is at least partially recoverable.

RESUMO

Invasions have increased the size of regional species pools, but are typically assumed to reduce native diversity. However, global-scale tests of this assumption have been elusive because of the focus on exotic species richness, rather than relative abundance. This is problematic because low invader richness can indicate invasion resistance by the native community or, alternatively, dominance by a single exotic species. Here, we used a globally replicated study to quantify relationships between exotic richness and abundance in grass-dominated ecosystems in 13 countries on six continents, ranging from salt marshes to alpine tundra. We tested effects of human land use, native community diversity, herbivore pressure, and nutrient limitation on exotic plant dominance. Despite its widespread use, exotic richness was a poor proxy for exotic dominance at low exotic richness, because sites that contained few exotic species ranged from relatively pristine (low exotic richness and cover) to almost completely exotic-dominated ones (low exotic richness but high exotic cover). Both exotic cover and richness were predicted by native plant diversity (native grass richness) and land use (distance to cultivation). Although climate was important for predicting both exotic cover and richness, climatic factors predicting cover (precipitation variability) differed from those predicting richness (maximum temperature and mean temperature in the wettest quarter). Herbivory and nutrient limitation did not predict exotic richness or cover. Exotic dominance was greatest in areas with low native grass richness at the site- or regional-scale. Although this could reflect native grass displacement, a lack of biotic resistance is a more likely explanation, given that grasses comprise the most aggressive invaders. These findings underscore the need to move beyond richness as a surrogate for the extent of invasion, because this metric confounds monodominance with invasion resistance. Monitoring species' relative abundance will more rapidly advance our understanding of invasions.

RESUMO

Reactions of Ta(NMe2)5 and n-propylamine are shown to be an effective system for sol-gel processing of Ta3N5. Ordered macroporous films of Ta3N5 on silica substrates have been prepared by infiltration of such a sol into close-packed sacrificial templates of cross-linked 500 nm polystyrene spheres followed by pyrolysis under ammonia to remove the template and crystallize the Ta3N5. Templates with long-range order were produced by controlled humidity evaporation. Pyrolysis of a sol-infiltrated template at 600 °C removes the polystyrene but does not crystallize Ta3N5, and X-ray diffraction shows nanocrystalline TaN plus amorphous material. Heating at 700 °C crystallizes Ta3N5 while retaining a high degree of pore ordering, whereas at 800 °C porous films with a complete loss of order are obtained.

RESUMO

There is interest in identifying novel materials for use in radioactive waste applications and studying their behavior under high pressure conditions. The mineral zirconolite (CaZrTi(2)O(7)) exists naturally in trace amounts in diamond-bearing deep-seated metamorphic/igneous environments, and it is also identified as a potential ceramic phase for radionuclide sequestration. However, it has been shown to undergo radiation-induced metamictization resulting in amorphous forms. In this study we probed the high pressure structural properties of this pyrochlore-like structure to study its phase transformations and possible amorphization behavior. Combined synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies reveal a series of high pressure phase transformations. Starting from the ambient pressure monoclinic structure, an intermediate phase with P2(1)/m symmetry is produced above 15.6 GPa via a first order transformation resulting in a wide coexistence range. Upon compression to above 56 GPa a disordered metastable phase III with a cotunnite-related structure appears that is recoverable to ambient conditions. We examine the similarity between the zirconolite behavior and the structural evolution of analogous pyrochlore systems under pressure.
