INTRODUCTION: The periosteum is a readily available tissue at the hamstring harvest site that could be utilized to enhance graft healing and prevent tunnel widening without additional cost or morbidity. This study aimed to compare graft healing using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional clinical outcome scores in a matched cohort of patients who underwent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with hamstring autografts with or without periosteal augmentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients who underwent ACL reconstruction (ACLR) were prospectively enrolled: 25 with standard ACLR (ST-ACLR) and 23 with periosteal augmented grafts (PA-ACLR). The same surgical techniques, fixation methods, and postoperative protocol were used in both groups. Signal-to-noise quotient (SNQ), graft healing at the bone-graft interface, graft signal according to the Howell scale, and femoral tunnel widening were evaluated using MRI after 1 year of follow-up. International knee documentation score (IKDC), Lysholm, Tegner activity scale, and visual analog scale for pain were used for functional evaluation at a minimum of 2 years postoperative. RESULTS: The mean SNQ of the proximal part of the graft was 9.6 ± 9.2 and 2.9 ± 3.3 for the ST-ACLR and PA-ACLR groups, respectively (P = 0.005). The mean femoral tunnel widening was 30.3% ± 18.3 and 2.3% ± 9.9 for the ST-ACLR, PA-ACLR groups, respectively (P < 0.001). Complete graft tunnel healing was observed in 65% and 28% of cases in the PA-ACLR and ST-ACLR groups, respectively. Both groups showed marked improvements in functional scores, with no statistically significant differences. CONCLUSION: Periosteal wrapping of hamstring tendon autografts is associated with better graft healing and maturation and lower incidence of femoral tunnel widening based on MRI analysis 1 year after ACL reconstruction. However, patient-reported outcomes and measured laxity were similar between the two groups at 2 years follow up. Maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles (MNPs) were functionalized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to give APTES@Fe2O3 (AMNP) which was then reacted with diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid (DTPA) to give a nanohybrid DTPA-APTES@Fe2O3 (DAMNP). Nano-isothermal titration calorimetry shows that DTPA complexation with uranyl ions in water is exothermic and has a stoichiometry of two DTPA to three uranyl ions. Density functional theory calculations indicate the possibility of several complexes between DTPA and UO22+ with different stoichiometries. Interactions between uranyl ions and DAMNP functional groups are revealed by X-photoelectron and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. Spherical aberration-corrected Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy visualizes uranium on the particle surface. Adsorbent performance metrics were evaluated by batch adsorption studies under different conditions of pH, initial uranium concentration and contact time, and the results expressed in terms of equilibrium adsorption capacities (qe) and partition coefficients (PC). By either criterion, performance increases from MNP to AMNP to DAMNP, with the maximum uptake at pH 5.5 in all cases: MNP, qe = 63 mg g-1, PC = 127 mg g-1 mM-1; AMNP, qe = 165 mg g-1, PC = 584 mg g-1 mM-1; DAMNP, qe = 249 mg g-1, PC = 2318 mg g-1 mM-1 (at 25 °C; initial U concentration 0.63 mM; 5 mg adsorbent in 10 mL of solution; contact time, 3 h). The pH maximum is related to the predominance of mono- and di-cationic uranium species. Uptake by DAMNPs follows a pseudo-first-order or pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fits a variety of adsorption models. The maximum adsorption capacity for DAMNPs is higher than for other functionalized magnetic nanohybrids. This adsorbent can be regenerated and recycled for at least 10 cycles with less than 10% loss in activity, and shows high selectivity. These findings suggest that DAMNP could be a promising adsorbent for the recovery of uranium from nuclear wastewaters.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of a modified anatomical posterolateral corner (PLC) reconstruction technique using a single autograft. METHODS: This prospective case series included 19 patients with a posterolateral corner injury. The posterolateral corner was reconstructed using a modified anatomical technique that utilized adjustable suspensory fixation on the tibial side. Patients were evaluated subjectively using the international knee documentation form (IKDC), Lysholm, and Tegner activity scales and objectively by measuring the tibial external rotation angle, knee hyperextension, and lateral joint line opening on stress varus radiographs before and after surgery. The patients were followed-up for a minimum of 2 years. RESULTS: Both IKDC and Lysholm knee scores significantly improved from 49 and 53 preoperatively to 77 and 81 postoperatively, respectively. The tibial external rotation angle and knee hyperextension showed significant reduction to normal values at the final follow-up. However, the lateral joint line opening measured on the varus stress radiograph remained larger than the contralateral normal knee. CONCLUSION: Posterolateral corner reconstruction with a hamstring autograft using a modified anatomical reconstruction technique significantly improved both the subjective patient scores and objective knee stability. However, the varus stability was not completely restored compared with the uninjured knee. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prospective case series (Level of evidence IV).

OVERVIEW: Calcaneus deformity of the foot is common in patients with myelodysplasia, mainly due to muscle imbalance. This deformity, especially in ambulatory patients, can result in gait problems and development of pressure sores, which can be complicated by calcaneal osteomyelitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 12 patients (18 feet), with calcaneus deformity due to myelomeningocele, and presented with penetrating heel ulcers complicated by calcaneal osteomyelitis. The mean age of the included cases was 11 years. The ulcers were unilateral in six patients and bilateral in six. Sensation was absent on the plantar aspect of the foot in all cases. The treatment was done in two stages; The first stage was eradication of infection and obtaining good soft tissue coverage, and the second stage was obtaining motor balance to achieve a more plantigrade and braceable foot. RESULTS: The average follow-up period was 19.2 months. In the final follow-up, twelve feet were graded as good, five as fair and one as poor according to Legaspi grading system. CONCLUSION: The combination of partial calcanectomy and subsequent transfer of tibialis anterior tendon, to improve the foot position and gait, can efficiently prevent ulcer recurrence in myelomeningocele patients with calcaneal deformity. Yogurt is considered one of the most popular and healthy dairy products, and has been exploited as a delivery matrix for phenolic compounds. In this study, coffee powder was added to yogurt as a functional ingredient to produce coffee-fortified yogurt. Total phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity and individual hydroxycinnamic acids have been identified and quantified through mass spectrometry. The results from coffee-fortified yogurt were compared with fermented coffee and plain yogurt. Coffee-fortified yogurt had higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activity compared to plain yogurt. However, the total phenolic compounds found in coffee-fortified yogurt represented only 38.9% of the original content in coffee. Caffeoylquinic acids were the most abundant phenolic compounds in coffee. Fermented coffee and coffee-fortified yogurt displayed lower amounts of individual phenolic compounds with respect to coffee (69.8% and 52.4% of recovery, respectively). A protective effect of the yogurt matrix on total and individual coffee phenolic compounds has been observed after in vitro digestion, resulting in a higher bioaccessibility in comparison with digested fermented coffee. Moreover, coffee-fortified yogurt showed the highest antioxidant values after digestion. These findings clearly demonstrate that coffee-fortified yogurt can be considered a significant source of bioaccessible hydroxycinnamic acids, besides its health benefits as a fermented dairy product.

The demand for reactive dyes in industries has increased rapidly in recent years, and producing a large quantity of dye-containing effluent waste contaminates soils and water streams. Current efforts to remove these harmful dyes have focused on utilizing functionalized nanomaterials. A 3D polyurethane foam loaded with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and ZnO nanocomposite (PUF/rGO/ZnO) has been proposed as an efficient structural design for dye degradation under the influence of visible light. The proposed structure was synthesized using a hydrothermal route followed by microwave irradiation. The resultant 3D PUF/rGO/ZnO was examined and characterized by various techniques such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDAX, BET, and UV-visible spectroscopy. SEM data illustrated that a good dispersion and embedment of the rGO/ZnO NPs within the PUF matrix occurred. The adsorption capacity for neat PUF showed that around 20% of the Methylene blue (MB) dye was only adsorbed on its surface. However, it was found that an exceptional adsorption capacity for MB degradation was observed when the rGO/ZnO NPs inserted into the PUF, which initially deteriorated to ~ 70 % of its initial concentration. Notably, the MB dye was completely degraded within 3 h.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of acute posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) lesions in multiple injured knees that were surgically treated with internal bracing. METHODS: Acute complete PCL lesions in multiple injured knees with subsequent internal-bracing treatment within 21 days between 2014 and 2016 were eligible for inclusion. At final follow-up, patients were assessed with Tegner, Lysholm, and IKDC scores. PCL stability and healing were verified with KT-2000, stress radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). RESULTS: Fourteen patients [mean age 37.4 (± 17.8; SD) years] were evaluated after a mean follow-up of 19.9 (± 7.7; SD) months. Thirteen patients suffered complete lesions of the PCL with concomitant ligamentous injuries (Schenck I: six cases, Schenck III M: five cases, Schenck IV N: one case, Schenck V: one case). Median Tegner, mean Lysholm and mean IKDC scores at follow-up were 4 (2-7; interquartile range), 69.1 (± 16.6; SD) and 68.9 (± 18.1; SD) respectively. Posterior translation averaged 5.8 (± 2.2; SD) mm with the KT 2000 and stress radiography showed a mean posterior tibial translation of 5.5 (± 4.1; SD) mm in the side to side comparison. MRI showed adequate PCL healing. CONCLUSIONS: Internal bracing as treatment for acute PCL ruptures in multiple injured knees showed adequate restoration of posterior tibial translation in a single-centre study including 14 cases. Environmental pollution caused by heavy metals constitutes a serious public health problem. In the case of uranium depletion, amidoxime groups are important because of their high affinity for uranium(VI). New series of bis(amidoxime)s with catechol-derived anchor groups were tested (b-AMD-1 and b-AMD-2). The catechol groups were designed to bind to the surface of maghemite nanoparticles (MNPs), and two nanohybrid devices MNP-b-AMD-1 and MNP-b-AMD-2 were obtained. This strategy makes for efficient removal of U(VI) via its complexation with the bis(amidoxime)s (b-AMD) and also its extraction from aqueous solution by magnetic harvesting of the MNPs. The assynthesized and b-AMD-grafted MNPs were characterized by several techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrophotometry (XPS), thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Sorption tests were run at pH 6.5, which corresponds to the highest affinity and selectivity of b-AMD for U(VI). After magnetic separation, the chelation ability and the selectivity of MNP-b-AMD-1 and MNP-b-AMD-2 towards U(VI) were evaluated by measuring the residual U(VI) concentration in the supernatant by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The data were plotted according to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms; the maximal sorption capacity (qmax) was 29 and 60 mg U g-1 for MNP-b-AMD-1 and MNP-b-AMD-2, respectively. This confirms that bis(amidoxime) groups are good candidates for uranium depletion of aqueous solution.

Healthcare spending has become a grave concern to national budgets worldwide, and to a greater extent in low-income countries. Brain tumors are a serious disease that affects a significant percentage of the population, and thus proper allocation of healthcare provisions for these patients to achieve acceptable outcomes is a must. The authors reviewed patients undergoing craniotomy for tumor resection at their institution for the preceding 3 months. All the methods used for preoperative planning, intraoperative management, and postoperative care of these patients were documented. Compromises to limit spending were made at each stage to limit expenditure, including low-resolution MRI, sparse use of intraoperative monitoring and image guidance, and lack of dedicated postoperative neurocritical ICU. This study included a cohort of 193 patients. The average cost from diagnosis to discharge was $1795 per patient (costs are expressed in USD). On average, there was a mortality rate of 10.5% and a neurological morbidity rate of 14%, of whom only 82.2% improved on discharge or at follow-up. The average length of stay at the hospital for these patients was 9.09 days, with a surgical site infection rate of only 3.5%. The authors believe that despite the great number of financial limitations facing neurosurgical practice in low-income countries, surgery can still be performed with reasonable outcomes.

Cadmium (Cd) is considered as an important factor involved in several neurological disturbances. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of Cd in the brain of peacock blennies Salaria pavo, a species used as a bioindicator of water pollution. A sublethal contamination of 2mg CdCl2 L-1 was performed over periods of 1, 4, 10 and 15 days. Total Cd accumulation was measured in brains and displayed low concentrations throughout the experiment. Partial-length cDNA of different ATP-binding cassette transporters (abcb1, abcc1, abcc2, abcg2 proteins) and acetylcholinesterase (ache) were characterized. mRNA expressions profiles displayed an up-regulation of abcc2 mRNA after 4 days of Cd exposure only while abcg2 mRNA was down-regulated after 10 days only. For AChE, the mRNA transcription and the activity of the enzyme were followed and highlighted that Cd exerted an inhibitory effect on the nervous information transmission. At the histological level, fish exhibited pathological symptoms in the optic tectum and the cerebellum and results showed that the cerebellum was the most affected organ.

We propose a model for the evolution of the conductivity tensor for a flowing suspension of electrically conductive particles. We use discrete particle numerical simulations together with a continuum physical framework to construct an evolution law for the suspension microstructure during flow. This model is then coupled with a relationship between the microstructure and the electrical conductivity tensor. Certain parameters of the joint model are fit experimentally using rheo-electrical conductivity measurements of carbon black suspensions under flow over a range of shear rates. The model is applied to the case of steady shearing as well as time-varying conductivity of unsteady flow experiments. We find that the model prediction agrees closely with the measured experimental data in all cases.

The phytochemical composition in two Tunisian globe artichoke cultivars (bracts, leaves, and floral stems) was evaluated in the plant byproducts. The results indicated that the bracts contain the highest levels of total phenols, o-diphenols, and flavonoids, whereas tannins seem to be more abundant in the leaves. Bracts from the 'Violet d'Hyères' cultivar possessed more total phenols (160.8 mg/g DW), flavonoids (64.9 mg/g DW), and anthocyanins (15.3 µg/g DW) than the 'Blanc d'Oran' bracts (134.5 mg/g DW, 51.2 mg/g DW, and 8.3 µg/g DW, resp.). Sixty-four volatile compounds were identified in the headspace of globe artichoke material, particularly in the bracts. The volatile profile showed that sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and non-terpene derivatives were the main volatiles emitted by the bracts in both cultivars. These results suggest that globe artichoke byproducts might represent a potential source of natural compounds, which could be used as nutraceuticals or as ingredients in the design of functional foods.

Active films were developed for food coating applications. Entrapped phenol susceptibility to digestion was studied. Sodium caseinate (Na-CN) coatings were formulated with 0, 10, 20% Casein (CN) incorporating selected phenols as model antioxidants. This study investigated phenol/CN/Na-CN interactions, in vitro bioaccessibility of phenols and CN role in phenols retention during in vitro gastric and pancreatic digestion. The antioxidant activity of catechin (CAT), rutin (RUT), chlorogenic acid (CHL), gallic acid (GAL), and tannic acid (TA) in coatings varied with the phenolic compound type and CN concentration and was related to phenol hydrophobic binding to CN. ABTS method gave activities ranged from 412 down to 213, and DPPH method gave values from 291·7 to 190·9. An inverse relationship was found with CN content due to CN/phenol interaction. During digestion, a part of phenols was degraded by alkaline pH of pancreatic fluid. Simultaneously, CN proteolysis led to release of phenols and the bioaccessibility index remained above 80% for all phenols. The results suggested the possibility of protecting phenols against oxidation and digestive alteration by entrapment in CN and Na-CN coating films. These positive results showed the ability to produce antioxidant-enriched edible coatings to increase food protection and phenol nutritional intake.

A new approach to flow battery design is demonstrated wherein diffusion-limited aggregation of nanoscale conductor particles at ∼1 vol % concentration is used to impart mixed electronic-ionic conductivity to redox solutions, forming flow electrodes with embedded current collector networks that self-heal after shear. Lithium polysulfide flow cathodes of this architecture exhibit electrochemical activity that is distributed throughout the volume of flow electrodes rather than being confined to surfaces of stationary current collectors. The nanoscale network architecture enables cycling of polysulfide solutions deep into precipitation regimes that historically have shown poor capacity utilization and reversibility and may thereby enable new flow battery designs of higher energy density and lower system cost. Lithium polysulfide half-flow cells operating in both continuous and intermittent flow mode are demonstrated for the first time.

OBJECTIVE: Microvascular decompression (MVD) is a well-established and highly effective treatment option for hemifacial spasm (HFS). Lateral spread response (LSR) has been used as an intraoperative indicator of HFS resolution, with controversial reliability. The purpose of this study was to determine long-term outcomes of MVD for HFS and the role of LSR and other preoperative predictors. METHODS: The authors conducted a cohort study of all patients treated with MVD for HFS at a single institution from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2019. In addition to a retrospective chart review, all patients were contacted at the time of the study to provide informed consent and responded to a telephone survey to ascertain their current disease and medication status. Patients with at least 12 months of postoperative follow-up were included. Statistical testing included a Student t-test, Fisher's exact test, logistic regression, and Cox proportional hazards analysis. RESULTS: One hundred nineteen patients met study criteria; 41 (34%) had at least 10 years of clinical follow-up. HFS fully resolved in 93 (78%), symptoms subjectively improved in 11 (9%) and were unchanged in 15 (13%). Immediate postoperative HFS status did not correlate with long-term outcome (p = 0.13). Changes in LSR were not associated with outcome. Patients receiving neuromodulating agents had significantly longer preoperative duration of symptoms and were more likely to show persistent LSR intraoperatively. HFS recurrence was associated with younger age at the time of surgery but not with intraoperative LSR resolution. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that MVD for HFS is highly effective for most patients. Neither intraoperative LSR change nor immediate postoperative status was predictive of long-term outcomes.

Newly discovered opto-ionic effects in metal oxides provide unique opportunities for functional ceramic applications. The authors generalize the recently demonstrated grain boundary opto-ionic effect observed in solid electrolyte thin films under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to a radiation-ionic effect that can be applied to bulk materials and used for gamma-rays (γ-rays) detection. Near room temperature, lightly doped Gd-doped CeO2, a polycrystalline ion conducting ceramic, exhibits a resistance ratio change ≈103 and reversible response in ionic current when exposed to 60Co γ-ray (1.1 and 1.3 MeV). This is attributed to the steady state passivation of space charge barriers at grain boundaries, that act as virtual electrodes, capturing radiation-induced electrons, in turn lowering space charge barrier heights, and thereby exclusively modulating the ionic carrier flow within the ceramic electrolytes. Such behavior allows significant electrical response under low fields, that is, < 2 V cm-1, paving the way to inexpensive, sensitive, low-power, and miniaturizable solid-state devices, uniquely suited for operating in harsh (high temperature, pressure, and corrosive) environments. This discovery presents opportunities for portable and/or scalable radiation detectors benefiting geothermal drilling, small modular reactors, nuclear security, and waste management.

The structure-activity relationship of a new tert-butylphenylthiazole series, with a pyrimidine linker, was investigated. We wished to expand knowledge of this novel class of antibiotics by generating 21 new derivatives bearing ≥2 heteroatoms in their side chains. Their activity was examined against isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridium difficile, Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Candida albicans. Two compounds with 1,2-diaminocyclohexane as a nitrogenous side chain showed promising activity against the highly infectious MRSA USA300 strain, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 4 µg mL-1. One of these two compounds demonstrated potent activity against C. difficile, with a MIC of 4 µg mL-1. Moderate activities against a C. difficile strain with a MIC of 8 µg mL-1 were noted. Some new compounds possessed antifungal activity against a wild fluconazole-resistant C. albicans strain, with MIC values of 4-16 µg mL-1. ADME and metabolism-simulation studies were performed for the most promising compound and compared with lead compounds. Our results revealed that one compound possessed greater penetration of bacterial membranes and metabolic resistance, which aided a longer duration of action against MRSA.

Background Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a significant complication in extremely preterm infants. Therefore, early diagnosis of BPD is important for planning treatment strategies. In this study, we aimed to assess the predictive efficacy of the Respiratory Severity Score (RSS) in determining severe BPD or death outcomes in very preterm infants. Methodology This retrospective study included preterm infants born with a gestational age of ≤30 weeks. The inclusion criteria comprised individuals who were mechanically ventilated (<1 week) during the first four weeks of life. Any patients who died during the first seven days of life were excluded. RSS values were recorded on days 3, 14, 21, and 28 of life. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify a correlation between RSS and patient outcomes. Results A total of 154 infants were included in the analysis, of whom 82 (53.24%) developed severe BPD and 38 (24.67%) died. RSS was higher in patients who either died or developed severe BPD compared to those who survived. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that RSSs at postnatal day 14 (odds ratio (OR) = 3.970; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.114-14.147; p < 0.05), day 21 (OR = 6.201; 95% CI = 1.937-19.851; p < 0.05), and day 28 (OR = 8.925; 95% CI = 3.331-28.383; p < 0.05) was significantly associated with a higher risk of death or severe BPD. Conclusions The findings of the present study revealed that RSS can help predict the risk of severe BPD in very preterm infants.

In the current trend where plant-based foods are preferred over animal-based foods, pulses represent an alternative source of protein but also of bioactive peptides (BPs). We investigated the pattern of protein hydrolysis during fermentation of red lentils protein isolate (RLPI) with various lactic acid bacteria and yeast strains. Hanseniaspora uvarum SY1 and Fructilactobacillus sanfranciscensis E10 were the most proteolytic microorganisms. H. uvarum SY1 led to the highest antiradical, angiotensin-converting enzyme-inhibitory and antifungal activities, as found in low molecular weight water soluble extracts (LMW-WSE). The 2039 peptide sequences identified by LMW-WSE were screened using BIOPEP UWM database, and 36 sequences matched with known BPs. Fermentation of RLPI by lactic acid bacteria and yeasts generated 12 peptides undetected in raw RLPI. Besides, H. uvarum SY1 led to the highest abundance (peak areas) of BPs, in particular with antioxidant and ACE-inhibitory activities. The amino acid sequences LVR and LVL, identified in the fermented RLPI, represent novel findings, as they were detected for the first time in substrates subjected to microbial fermentation. KVI, another BP highly characteristic of RLPI-SY1, was previously observed only in dried bonito. 44 novel potential BPs, worthy of further characterization, were correlated with antifungal activity.

Efficient separation of Kr from Kr/Xe mixtures is pivotal in nuclear waste management and dark matter research. Thus far, scientists have encountered a formidable challenge: the absence of a material with the ability to selectively adsorb Kr over Xe at room temperature. This study presents a groundbreaking transformation of the renowned metal-organic framework (MOF) CuBTC, previously acknowledged for its Xe adsorption affinity, into an unparalleled Kr-selective adsorbent. This achievement stems from an innovative densification approach involving systematic compression of the MOF, where the crystal size, interparticle interaction, defects, and evacuation conditions are synergistically modulated. The resultant densified CuBTC phase exhibits exceptional mechanical resilience, radiation tolerance, and notably an unprecedented selectivity for Kr over Xe at room temperature. Simulation and experimental kinetic diffusion studies confirm reduced gas diffusion in the densified MOF, attributed to its small pore window and minimal interparticle voids. The lighter Kr element demonstrates facile surface passage and higher diffusivity within the material, while the heavier Xe encounters increased difficulty entering the material and lower diffusivity. This Kr-selective MOF not only represents a significant breakthrough in Kr separation but also demonstrates remarkable processability and scalability to kilogram levels. The findings presented herein underscore the transformative potential of engineered MOFs in addressing complex challenges, heralding a new era of Kr separation technologies.
