RESUMO

A greater understanding of the prognostic variables that affect the timing of death for cats with trauma may help clinicians select treatments and monitoring plans. This study investigated the mortality rate and its distribution pattern in a large population of cats to identify variables associated with the timing of trauma-related deaths. Clinical data was retrieved from the Veterinary Committee on Trauma database to determine mortality rates and timing of deaths, defined as early death (ED; <1 day post-presentation) or delayed death (DD; ≥1 day post-presentation). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify characteristics and interventions that best predicted timing of death. Overall mortality rate for 6703 feline trauma patients with complete records was 17.2%, with 7.6% due to natural death and 92.3% due to euthanasia. Among the subset of 543 cats with trauma that died after presentation or required euthanasia due to a grave prognosis (representing an 8.1% mortality rate), EDs were more common (71.7%) than DD and the cause of death was not significantly associated with the timing of death. Clinical pathology parameters were unable to identify animals more likely to die or to require euthanasia due to a poor prognosis during hospitalisation. Factors that were significantly different for cats with ED vs. DD included the median cumulative results for the Modified Glasgow Coma Scale (MGCS) score and the Animal Trauma Triage (ATT) score, the presence of spinal trauma, administration of blood products and undertaking surgical procedures. An increased likelihood of DD rather than ED was associated with the administration of blood products (odds ratio [OR], 3.959; P = 0.019) vs. not, performing a surgical procedure (OR, 6.055; P < 0.001) vs. not, and a cumulative MGCS of 15-17 or 18 (OR, 1.947 and 3.115; P = 0.031 and P = 0.01, respectively) vs. a cumulative MGCS ≤ 11.

BACKGROUND: Intoxication following ingestion of the popular garden shrub 'Yesterday, today, tomorrow' (Brunfelsia sp.) is known to result in gastrointestinal and central nervous system clinical signs in dogs. CASE REPORT: A 2-year-old dog developed acute-onset vomiting, profuse diarrhoea and ptyalism after unsupervised access to an enclosed backyard that contained a Brunfelsia sp. shrub. During initial assessment the watery diarrhoea contained plant material and the dog appeared painful on abdominal palpation. Soon after admission, severe neurological abnormalities developed. Decontamination was undertaken by gastric and colonic lavage under general anaesthesia, but on recovery the patient had generalised seizures that were unresponsive to benzodiazepines. Following treatment with multiple antiepileptic medications and endotracheal intubation for loss of gag reflex, the patient developed respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Four days after initial presentation, the patient developed cardiac dysrhythmia leading to fatal cardiac arrest. Plant material recovered from the shrub and the patient's gastrointestinal tract were identified as Brunfelsia spp. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of hypoventilation, severe cardiac dysrhythmia and cardiac arrest associated with Brunfelsia sp. intoxication in a dog. Previous reports described clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease and mild cardiac dysrhythmia progressing to seizure activity and opisthotonus. Electrocardiography should form part of patient monitoring and mechanical ventilation considered for patients that develop respiratory failure, especially if massive ingestion is suspected.

RESUMO

We wish to report two cases of large traumatic extradural diverticula resulting from motorcycle accidents and causing spinal cord compression. One was a complication of total brachial plexus avulsion and the other followed a closed spinal injury with probable associated brachial plexus traction and root sleeve rupture.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of abrupt weaning (inclusive of social group disruption and maternal separation) on the physiological mediators of stress and measures of immune function. Thirty-six male and 36 female calves (Limousin and Charolais crosses), habituated to handling, were blocked by sex, weight, and breed of dam and randomly assigned, within block, to either a control or abruptly weaned group. Animals were separated into the respective treatment groups at 0 h. Calves were bled at -168, 6 (males only), 24, 48, and 168 h after weaning, and the behavioral reaction of calves to handling was scored. Cortisol, catecholamine (not sampled at -168 h), acute-phase protein concentrations, and in vitro interferon-gamma production and neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio were measured. The effects of weaning, calf sex, time, and their respective interactions were described. Disruption of the established social group at 0 h increased (P < 0.001) the plasma cortisol concentration and neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio and decreased the leukocyte concentration (P < 0.001) and the in vitro interferon-gamma response to the mitogen concanavalin-A (P < 0.001) and keyhole limpet hemocyanin (P < 0.001) for weaned and control animals compared with -168 h. There was no effect of weaning or sex on the behavioral reaction of calves to handling. Plasma cortisol and adrenaline concentrations were not affected by weaning or sex. Plasma noradrenaline concentration was influenced by weaning x sex (P < 0.05) and time x sex (P < 0.05). The response increased for male calves with weaning and increased with each sampling time after weaning. For heifers, the response was not affected by weaning and plasma concentrations decreased at 168 h after weaning. There was no effect of weaning or sex on leukocyte concentration. The neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio increased after weaning (P < 0.01) and was affected by sex (P < 0.05). Weaning decreased (P < 0.05) the in vitro interferon-gamma response to the antigen keyhole limpet hemocyanin. There was a time x weaning x sex (P < 0.05) interaction for fibrinogen concentration but no effect of treatment on haptoglobin concentration. Abrupt weaning increased plasma cortisol and noradrenaline concentrations that were accompanied by attenuation of in vitro interferon-gamma production to novel mitogen and antigen complexes up to 7 d after weaning.

BACKGROUND: Renal infarcts identified without definitive association with any specific disease process. OBJECTIVE: Determine diseases associated with diagnosis of renal infarcts in cats diagnosed by sonography or necropsy. ANIMALS: 600 cats underwent abdominal ultrasonography, necropsy, or both at a veterinary medical teaching hospital. METHODS: Information obtained from electronic medical records. Cats classified as having renal infarct present based on results of sonographic evaluation or necropsy. Time-matched case-controls selected from cats that underwent the next scheduled diagnostic procedure. RESULTS: 309 of 600 cats having diagnosis of renal infarct and 291 time-matched controls. Cats 7-14 years old were 1.6 times (odds ratio, 95% CI: 1.03-2.05, P = .03) more likely to have renal infarct than younger cats but no more likely to have renal infarct than older cats (1.4, 0.89-2.25, P = .14). All P = .14 are statistically significant. Cats with renal infarcts were 4.5 times (odds ratio, 95% CI: 2.63-7.68, P < .001) more likely to have HCM compared to cats without renal infarcts. Cats with renal infarcts were 0.7 times (odds ratio, 95% CI: 0.51-0.99, P = .046) less likely to have diagnosis of neoplasia compared to cats without renal infarcts. Cats with diagnosis of hyperthyroidism did not have significant association with having renal infarct. Cats with renal infarcts were 8 times (odds ratio, 95% CI: 2.55-25.40, P ≤ .001) more likely to have diagnosis of distal aortic thromboembolism than cats without renal infarcts. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Cats with renal infarcts identified on antemortem examination should be screened for occult cardiomyopathy.

The efficiency of spin polarized charge transfer was investigated in an Fe/MgO tunnel barrier/GaAs based structure using spin dependent photocurrent measurements, whereby a spin imbalance in carrier population was generated in the GaAs by circularly polarized light. The dominance of tunneling transport processes over Schottky emission gave rise to a high spin transfer efficiency of 35% under the photovoltaic mode of device operation. A spin dependent tunneling conductance associated with spin polarized electron transport was identified by the observation of phase changes. This transport prevails over the unpolarized electron and hole conduction over the bias range which corresponds to flat band conditions.

The damping of magnetization, represented by the rate at which it relaxes to equilibrium, is successfully modeled as a phenomenological extension in the Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert equation. This is the damping torque term known as Gilbert damping and its direction is given by the vector product of the magnetization and its time derivative. Here we derive the Gilbert term from first-principles by a nonrelativistic expansion of the Dirac equation. We find that this term arises when one calculates the time evolution of the spin observable in the presence of the full spin-orbital coupling terms, while recognizing the relationship between the curl of the electric field and the time-varying magnetic induction.

RESUMO

We discuss the fabrication of nanopillar spin electronic devices from metal multilayered heterostructures, utilizing a novel three-dimensional focused ion beam lithography process. Finite element simulation was performed to optimize the geometry of the nanopillar device and to demonstrate that current flow is perpendicular to the plane within the active region of the device. Clear zero-field current induced magnetization switching is observed in our nanopillar devices at room temperature.
