BACKGROUND: Hospital falls continue to be a persistent global issue with serious harmful consequences for patients and health services. Many clinical practice guidelines now exist for hospital falls, and there is a need to appraise recommendations. METHOD: A systematic review and critical appraisal of the global literature was conducted, compliant with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Epistemonikos, Infobase of Clinical Practice Guidelines, Cochrane CENTRAL and PEDro databases were searched from 1 January 1993 to 1 February 2024. The quality of guidelines was assessed by two independent reviewers using Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation Global Rating Scale and Appraisal of Guidelines of Research and Evaluation Recommendation Excellence (AGREE-REX). Certainty of findings was rated using Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation Confidence in Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative Research. Data were analysed using thematic synthesis. RESULTS: 2404 records were screened, 77 assessed for eligibility, and 20 hospital falls guidelines were included. Ten had high AGREE-REX quality scores. Key analytic themes were as follows: (i) there was mixed support for falls risk screening at hospital admission, but scored screening tools were no longer recommended; (ii) comprehensive falls assessment was recommended for older or frail patients; (iii) single and multifactorial falls interventions were consistently recommended; (iv) a large gap existed in patient engagement in guideline development and implementation; (v) barriers to implementation included ambiguities in how staff and patient falls education should be conducted, how delirium and dementia are managed to prevent falls, and documentation of hospital falls. CONCLUSION: Evidence-based hospital falls guidelines are now available, yet systematic implementation across the hospital sector is more limited. There is a need to ensure an integrated and consistent approach to evidence-based falls prevention for a diverse range of hospital patients.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the feasibility of using allied health assistants to deliver patient falls prevention education within 48 h after hospital admission. DESIGN AND SETTING: Feasibility study with hospital patients randomly allocated to usual care or usual care plus additional patient falls prevention education delivered by supervised allied health assistants using an evidence-based scripted conversation and educational pamphlet. PARTICIPANTS: (i) allied health assistants and (ii) patients admitted to participating hospital wards over a 20-week period. OUTCOMES: (i) feasibility of allied health assistant delivery of patient education; (ii) hospital falls per 1,000 bed days; (iii) injurious falls; (iv) number of falls requiring transfer to an acute medical facility. RESULTS: 541 patients participated (median age 81 years); 270 control group and 271 experimental group. Allied health assistants (n = 12) delivered scripted education sessions to 254 patients in the experimental group, 97% within 24 h after admission. There were 32 falls in the control group and 22 in the experimental group. The falls rate was 8.07 falls per 1,000 bed days in the control group and 5.69 falls per 1,000 bed days for the experimental group (incidence rate ratio = 0.66 (95% CI 0.32, 1.36; P = 0.26)). There were 2.02 injurious falls per 1,000 bed days for the control group and 1.03 for the experimental group. Nine falls (7 control, 2 experimental) required transfer to an acute facility. No adverse events were attributable to the experimental group intervention. CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible and of benefit to supplement usual care with patient education delivered by allied health assistants.

OBJECTIVES: The risk of falls increases with age and often requires an emergency medical service (EMS) response. We compared the characteristics of patients attended by EMS in response to repeat falls within 30 days and 12 months of their first EMS-attended fall; and explored the number of days between the index fall and the subsequent fall(s). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all adults (> =18 years of age) who experienced their first EMS-attended fall between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020, followed up until 31 December 2021. Patients who experienced > =1 subsequent fall, following their first recorded fall, were defined as experiencing repeat falls. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with repeat falls; and Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to estimate the time (in days) between consecutive EMS-attended falls. RESULTS: A total of 128,588 EMS-attended fall-related incidents occurred involving 77,087 individual patients. Most patients, 54,554 (71%) were attended only once for a fall-related incident (30,280 females; median age 73 years, inter-quartile range (IQR): 55-84). A total of 22,533 (29%) patients experienced repeat EMS-attended falls (13,248 females; median age 83 years, IQR: 74-89, at first call). These 22,533 patients accounted for 58% (74,034 attendances) of all EMS-attendances to fall-related incidents. Time between EMS-attended falls decreased significantly the more falls a patient sustained. Among the 22,533 patients who experienced repeat falls, 13,363 (59%) of repeat falls occurred within 12 months: 3,103 (14%) of patients sustained their second fall within 30 days of their index fall, and 10,260 (46%) between 31 days to 12 months. Patients who were transported to the hospital, via any urgency, at their first EMS-attended fall, had a reduced odds of sustaining a second EMS-attended fall within both 30 days and 31 days to 12 months, compared to non-transported patients. CONCLUSION: Nearly 30% of all patients attended by EMS for a fall, sustained repeat falls, which collectively accounted for nearly 60% of all EMS-attendances to fall-related incidents. Further exploration of the role EMS clinicians play in identifying and referring patients who sustain repeat falls into alternative pathways is needed.

BACKGROUND: World falls guidelines recommend that hospitalised older patients receive individualised falls prevention education, yet no studies have sought older people's feedback on how best to deliver falls prevention education in hospitals. The objective of the study was to explore the perspectives of older people and their caregivers about barriers and enablers to implementation of a tailored hospital falls education program. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Three focus groups and 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted. A purposive sample of older people who had previous hospital admissions and caregivers of older people were selected to review a co-designed patient falls education program (the revised Safe Recovery program). They provided feedback on how to implement the program in hospital settings. Data were thematically analysed taking an deductive-inductive approach. RESULTS: Participants were 37 older people [female n = 24 (64.9%), age range 64 to 89 years] and nine caregivers (female n = 8). The first theme was that the Safe Recovery Program resources were of high quality, enabling strong patient engagement and increased knowledge and awareness about falls prevention in hospitals. The second theme identified practical strategies to enable program delivery in hospital wards. The key enablers identified were: timing of delivery around wellness and the patient's mobility; tailoring messages for each older patient; key staff members being assigned to lead program delivery. Participants recommended that staff assist older patients to set appropriate behavioural goals in relation to preventing falls in hospitals. They also recommended that staff raise older patients' confidence and motivation to take action to reduce the risk of falls. Providing resources in other languages and alternative shorter versions was recommended to enable broad dissemination. CONCLUSIONS: Older people and their caregivers advised that implementing falls education in hospitals can be enabled by using high quality resources, delivering falls education in a timely manner and personalising the education and support to individual needs.

Clinicians are increasingly required to work and learn interprofessionally, yet few studies explore the nature of being interprofessional. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of clinicians who identify as interprofessional or have an interprofessional identity. Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) was applied as a qualitative research approach and analytical method. Fifteen key informants from a range of professions, settings, and roles were recruited via purposive sampling. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews, observation of participants' day-to-day practice, and review of organizational documents, and analyzed using IPA. Six interdependent Group Experiential Themes were developed: (i) The power of person-centered holistic care, (ii) Learning and growth through curiosity, reflection, and willingness to be vulnerable, (iii) Welcomes, values, and empowers all others, (iv) Trust and mutual respect through belonging and connection, (v) The contribution of background and previous experiences, and (vi) The influence of workplace context. Each Group Experiential Theme had between two and nine sub-themes. Results support the value of understanding and making explicit the concepts that comprise clinician interprofessional identity. The findings can be used to support clinicians, educators, leaders, and policy makers to develop and sustain interprofessional identity, and subsequently cultivate a culture of interprofessional collaborative practice. Future research is needed to further explore the themes, investigate their inter-relationships, and present the concepts that comprise clinician interprofessional identity in a way that is accessible to healthcare professionals and facilitates their integration into practice.

While rural health-care settings are said to be ideal places for the facilitation of interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP) in students, little is known about the rural-IPECP interface. This study explored this interface through student and clinical educator experiences following implementation of a structured IPECP student placement model. Data were gathered through 11 focus groups with 34 students and 24 clinical educators. Content analysis was used to analyze data and two categories were developed for reporting. The power of place and space, highlighting the importance of flexibility, co-location, and lack of hierarchy in promoting IPECP, as well as the role of shared accommodation in enhancing social connectedness within and outside placement were highlighted. This study unpacks the characteristics of rural health-care settings that make it ideal for IPECP despite the resource constraints. Future studies can investigate the rural-IPECP interface through a patient lens.

Literature regarding simulation for learning interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) indicates a need to include a range of health professions and to focus on students' development of team communication and conflict resolution skills in day-to-day healthcare delivery. This study evaluated the impact of interprofessional simulation for occupational therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, and nursing students on interprofessional collaboration competencies, specifically collaborative communication and conflict resolution during day-to-day interactions, and their intention for IPCP during placement. A series of simulations featuring the potential for interprofessional conflict and involving explicit coaching on communication and conflict resolution were conducted. A single cohort pre-test post-test design included the Students' Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education Revised (SPICE-R), the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS), and an open response survey question on future intended practice. A total of 237 students participated in the simulation experience. Overall scores and scores on all IPCP competencies in the ICASS (n = 193) and SPICE-R (n = 226) improved for all professions post-simulation. The mean score of the ICCAS increased for 98% of the respondents and similarly the mean score of the SPICE-R increased for 71% of the respondents. Open-ended responses indicated students' intentions to pursue self-leadership in IPCP. Students who participated in an interprofessional simulation reported perceived improvements in IPCP competencies and were encouraged to initiate IPCP when on placement in the practice setting.

There is limited evidence about how physical activity (PA) programs should be provided for older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Recently two groups of Aboriginal Elders on Noongar Boodja (Country) in Western Australia participated in the Ironbark PA program. ISSUE ADDRESSED: The objective of this study was to explore the views of key stakeholders about the barriers and enablers to delivering a successful PA program and provide feedback for future program delivery. METHODS: The research took a 'Nih (listening), Waangkiny (learning), Kaadatjiny (knowing)' approach. The lead researcher, a Noongar Wadjuk woman, conducted semi-structured interviews (n = 17) with key stakeholders: Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal workers who assisted to deliver the program, and family and local members of the communities. Data were also collected through weekly program notes and researcher diary entries. Data were analysed thematically. RESULTS: The overarching theme highlighted that stakeholders felt a sense of building a PA program that was culturally appropriate. They reflected that the program attracted older Aboriginal people because it was designed to make them feel welcomed with a sense of belonging. Five major themes were identified: Relationships, Belonging, Program structure, Benefits of the program and Future planning. Positive changes observed in Elders' health and well-being were a source of inspiration for team workers. CONCLUSIONS: Key enablers to delivering a PA program for older Aboriginal people are building a culturally strong program that creates a sense of belonging for the participants. SO WHAT?: Practitioners who are planning PA programs for older Aboriginal people should prioritise the development of cultural safety and security.

Simulation enables learners to practice new skills in a supportive environment. Largely driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, simulation via telepractice, i.e., telesimulation, has emerged. Viable delivery of telesimulation requires consideration of the adaptations needed to conduct simulation via telepractice. The aim of this study was to design and pilot test the feasibility of using telesimulation to provide training in infant feeding management. An iterative process was used across four phases: (1) simulation design, (2) telesimulation adaptations, (3) user testing, feedback, and modifications, and (4) user testing of modified simulation, feedback, and final modifications. During Phases 1 and 2, team members worked together to design and test telepractice adaptations for a simulation experience. During Phases 3 and 4, the telesimulation was pilot tested with a group of speech pathologists, with feedback sought via open-ended survey questions and/or an optional focus group. Manifest content analysis was used to interpret user feedback. In Phase 2, several adaptations were explored to optimize telesimulation delivery and engagement, including Zoom® functions (e.g., 'spotlighting,' digital backgrounds) and supplementary video/auditory files. There were 11 participants across Phases 3 and 4. Specific feedback centered around simulation preparation and structure, session practicalities, supports for realism, Zoom® functions, group dynamics, participants' experiences, and future enhancements. An overall list of recommendations for telesimulation was generated. Telesimulation for feeding management was considered feasible and participant feedback was favorable. Further research is required to investigate if the learner outcomes of telesimulation are comparable to in-person simulation for infant feeding management.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the effects of different scaling and polishing techniques on the surface roughness of four different restorative materials. METHODS: 72 specimens were prepared, molded to a size of 8.0 by 2.0 mm, and cured according to the manufacturers' instructions. The specimens were stored at 37°C for 24 hours and then thermocycled for 5,000 cycles (from 55°C to 5°C) to simulate 6 months of clinical use. Surface roughness (Ra/average and Rz/max-overall heights) was calculated using a stylus profilometer by subtracting the simulated treatments of hand scaling, ultrasonic scaling, and air polishing from the baseline measurements. The difference in Ra and Rz data were compared independently for each measurement using a two-way ANOVA on Ranks and the Holm-Sidak test, with α< 0.05 used to determine significance. RESULTS: Irrespective of the scaling or polishing technique employed, flowable bulk fill demonstrated the lowest Ra and Rz values. Hand scaling exhibited the highest roughness and variability among the other techniques, regardless of the materials tested (P< 0.001). Air polishing with glycine resulted in the lowest roughness values across all tested materials, with the exception of the tested bioactive restorative material group. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Regarding surface roughness, air polishing with glycine may be an effective and safe intervention for periodontal maintenance of subgingival restorations compared to the other tested scaling methods.

PURPOSE: To compare the microhardness values and bottom/top hardness ratios of different composites after being cured in 2 or 4 mm increments. METHODS: Two bulk fill composites, methacrylate-based and ormocer-based, and one conventional composite were tested. 36 cylindrical discs were prepared (n=12/composite, with six for 2 mm, and six for 4 mm thickness) by pressing each composite into a mold between two glass slides covered by Mylar strips. The top and bottom surfaces of each sample were evaluated using a Buehler hardness tester for Knoop microhardness, with a 50 g static load applied for 10 seconds at three different locations of the central part of each sample. The bottom/top hardness ratio was calculated for each sample. The Knoop microhardness data and bottom/top ratio percentages were analyzed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Holm-Sidak post hoc test, with significance at P< 0.05. RESULTS: The tested methacrylate-based bulk fill had the highest overall microhardness among the three tested composites. All three composite types showed a significant difference in microhardness between the top and bottom of the 4 mm discs. The bottom/top ratio percentages differed significantly for both tested bulk fill composites across different thicknesses. Both tested bulk fill materials had a bottom/top ratio of ≥ 80% at the deepest level of a 4 mm increment. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The type of material significantly affected both the bottom and top microhardness values under the experimental conditions used. While both tested bulk fill composites showed a decline in microhardness at the bottom of the 4 mm depth, they had clinically acceptable microhardness ratios at greater depths.

This unique study investigated the educational and service delivery impacts of a team-based, innovative model of interprofessional education (IPE) namely the Rural Interprofessional Education and Supervision (RIPES) model on participating students, clinical educators, and their workplaces, in rural Australian healthcare settings. Participating professions included dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech pathology. Outcomes from the RIPES model were compared with regular uni-professional placement models. A multi-site, pre-post, comparative design was used. The main data collection measures included were the Students Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education - Revised scale, the Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale, and time-usage data. The RIPES model resulted in significant improvement in students' beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes that underpin interprofessional socialization and collaborative practice in healthcare settings. Importantly, students were able to benefit from the RIPES learning activities without compromising their contact time with patients. Clinical educators spent significantly more time in non-patient contact activities than the uni-professional group. This important work was undertaken in response to previous calls to address a gap in IPE models in rural areas. It involved students from multiple professions and universities, measured impacts on multiple stakeholders, and followed international best practice interprofessional education research recommendations.

This paper explores the development and evaluation of the video Observation Tool for Interprofessional Skills (VOTIS). We describe the development of an authentic interprofessional assessment tool that incorporates video reflection and allows formative and summative assessment of individual learners' interprofessional skills within an authentic interprofessional context. We then investigate its validity and reliability. The VOTIS was developed using a modified Delphi technique. The tool was piloted with 61 students and 11 clinical educators who completed the VOTIS following team meetings where students interacted about their interprofessional clinical work. The following were calculated: internal consistency; students' proficiency levels; inter-rater reliability between students and clinical educators; and inter-rater reliability between clinical educators and an independent rater. Results indicate that the VOTIS has acceptable internal consistency and moderate reliability and has value in evaluating students' interprofessional skills. Study outcomes highlight the need for more explicit wording of tool content and instructions and further clinical educator training to increase the utility and reliability of the VOTIS as a learning and assessment tool.

Effective interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) requires a new way of working characterized by distributed leadership skills, shared decision-making, and the adoption of uniprofessional and interprofessional identities. Health professional educators are tasked with preparing clinicians for IPCP through interprofessional education (IPE). Numerous IPE teaching interventions have been developed, ranging in length from hours to semesters, designed to introduce students to interprofessional ways of working - usually evaluated in terms of student satisfaction, perceptions of other disciplines and conceptual knowledge. However, working interprofessionally also requires integrating dispositional knowledge into one's emerging interprofessional habits and values. In this paper, we describe a learning activity, inspired by a new video-reflexive methodology, designed to foster dispositional learning of interprofessional skills using a video-based assessment tool: the Video Observation Tool for Interprofessional Skills (VOTIS). Based on focus group and interview data, we suggest the activity's usefulness in fostering conceptual, procedural and dispositional knowledge, as well as reflexive feedback literacy. Overall, our qualitative evaluation of the VOTIS suggests the merits of drawing on video-reflexive methodology and pedagogical theory to re-imagine IPE as a dynamic process, requiring the development of interprofessional skills that must be appropriated into students' emerging (inter)professional identities.

BACKGROUND: Falls remain a common and debilitating problem in hospitals worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of falls prevention interventions on falls rates and the risk of falling in hospital. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. PARTICIPANTS: Hospitalised adults. INTERVENTION: Prevention methods included staff and patient education, environmental modifications, assistive devices, policies and systems, rehabilitation, medication management and management of cognitive impairment. We evaluated single and multi-factorial approaches. OUTCOME MEASURES: Falls rate ratios (rate ratio: RaR) and falls risk, as defined by the odds of being a faller in the intervention compared to control group (odds ratio: OR). RESULTS: There were 43 studies that satisfied the systematic review criteria and 23 were included in meta-analyses. There was marked heterogeneity in intervention methods and study designs. The only intervention that yielded a significant result in the meta-analysis was education, with a reduction in falls rates (RaR = 0.70 [0.51-0.96], P = 0.03) and the odds of falling (OR = 0.62 [0.47-0.83], P = 0.001). The patient and staff education studies in the meta-analysis were of high quality on the GRADE tool. Individual trials in the systematic review showed evidence for clinician education, some multi-factorial interventions, select rehabilitation therapies, and systems, with low to moderate risk of bias. CONCLUSION: Patient and staff education can reduce hospital falls. Multi-factorial interventions had a tendency towards producing a positive impact. Chair alarms, bed alarms, wearable sensors and use of scored risk assessment tools were not associated with significant fall reductions.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in a residential transition care setting to measure older adults' functional outcomes. METHODS: A convenience sample of older adults (n = 10) and staff (n = 4) was recruited. The feasibility of using assessment tools that comprise a CGA to comprehensively measure function in physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains was evaluated pre- and post-rehabilitation. RESULTS: 10 older adults (mean ± SD age = 78.9 ± 9.1, n = 6 male) completed a CGA performed using assessments across physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains. The CGA took 55.9 ± 7.3 min to complete. Staff found CGA using the selected assessment tools to be acceptable and suitable for the transition care population. Older adults found the procedure to be timely and 60% found the assessments easy to comprehend. Participating in CGA also assisted older adults in understanding their present state of health. The older adults demonstrated improvements across all assessed domains including functional mobility (de Morton Mobility Index; baseline 41.5 ± 23.0, discharge 55.0 ± 24.0, p = 0.01) and quality of life (EQ-5D-5L; baseline 59.0 ± 21.7, discharge 78.0 ± 16.0, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating CGA to evaluate functional outcomes in transition care using a suite of assessment tools was feasible and enabled a holistic assessment.

BACKGROUND: Bridging the research-practice gap in autism communication services is an identified priority for improving services. Limited research has investigated the views of practitioners regarding this research-practice gap. Investigation of the barriers experienced and facilitators used in clinical practice may assist to identify scalable and sustainable strategies to increase use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in the delivery of communication services to children with autism. AIMS: To elucidate how Australian speech pathologists engage with external evidence and how communication outcomes are measured to demonstrate the effectiveness of service provision to children with autism. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 15 Australian speech pathologists, with experience ranging from less than 1 to more than 16 years, participated in three focus groups. Data from focus groups were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis within an interpretive phenomenological paradigm. OUTCOMES & RESULTS: Seven themes were identified. Participants reported on the diversity of individuals with autism, their experiences of resource constraints, seeking collegial advice and accessing a diverse range of evidence sources, the role of clinical expertise in translating evidence to practice, the barriers experienced in outcome measurement and use of stakeholders to facilitate data collection to demonstrate outcomes. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Individual practitioner skill and beliefs are facilitators to translating research to practice. Interventions to improve clinician use of EBP should address the skill and belief barriers, aiming to increase a clinician's EBP self-efficacy and increasing their expectation that investing in EBP activities will result in improved services for children with autism. Modelling and reflective practice are two strategies that may have an application as interventions to improve EBP use in clinical practice. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Constrained resources, especially lack of time, is a barrier to routine uptake of best available evidence in clinical services for children with autism. What this paper adds to existing knowledge In this study, the perception that speech pathologists lacked time to engage in EBP activities was linked with the speech pathologist's research skill and their beliefs about the benefits of engaging in EBP. Speech Pathologists reported using a range of information sources, as "evidence" but also reported feeling uneasy when using evidence of disputable, or unknown quality. Accessibility and relevance to their individual client were highly prioritised in selecting evidence. Clinical expertise was an essential skill for research translation. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? Interventions which target professional beliefs and research translation capability are requisite for motivating speech pathologists to improve their use of EBP. Modelling of EBP use, individual reflective practice and collegial active listening to facilitate reflective practice, might be useful strategies which target beliefs and capability of individual speech pathologists; thereby changing their EBP use.

The objective of this qualitative systematic review was to synthesize all evidence to understand the barriers and enablers to older Indigenous peoples (aged 40 years and older) engaging in physical activity. Four databases were searched. Study quality was assessed from an Indigenous perspective, using an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander quality appraisal tool. Data were analyzed using thematic synthesis. There were 4,246 articles screened with 23 articles and one report included from over 30 Indigenous communities across four countries. Cultural Safety and Security was a key enabler, including developing physical activity programs which are led by Indigenous communities and preference Indigenous values. Colonization was a key barrier that created mistrust and uncertainty. Social Determinants of Health, including cost, were supported by successful programs, but if not addressed, were demotivators of engagement. Older Indigenous peoples identified barriers and enablers that can direct the development of sustainable, culturally appropriate physical activity programs.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: How the loading rate might affect the mechanical properties of interim materials and interim fixed dental prostheses is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the material stiffness, material strength, and structural strength of interim 3-unit fixed dental prostheses fabricated from 3 interim materials when stressed at different loading rates. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bar-shaped specimens and anatomically correct interim 3-unit fixed dental prostheses with a modified-ridge lap pontic were fabricated from polyethyl methacrylate resin (Trim) and 2 bis-acrylic composite resins (TempSmart; Integrity) (n=10). Flexural modulus and strength of the bar specimens, representing material stiffness and strength, were determined with a 4-point bend test in a universal testing machine. The structural strength of the prosthesis was assessed from the failure load from a vertical force applied on the occlusal surface of the pontic. Three loading rates, 0.5, 5, or 10 mm/min, were evaluated. Results were statistically analyzed with 2-way analysis of variance and multiple comparisons (α=.05). RESULTS: Loading rate and material significantly affected flexural modulus, flexural strength, and structural strength (P<.05). Increasing loading rate significantly increased the flexural modulus of all materials (P<.05), but the effect of loading rate on the flexural strength of bis-acrylic composite resins was mostly insignificant. Polyethyl methacrylate specimens did not fracture when loaded at 0.5 or 5 mm/min, and the interim fixed dental prostheses made from polyethyl methacrylate did not fracture at the 0.5 mm/min loading rate. Dual-polymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin had significantly higher flexural modulus and strengths than autopolymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin. CONCLUSIONS: Polyethyl methacrylate resin had the lowest stiffness among the interim materials tested and did not fracture but excessively deformed at the low loading rate. Dual-polymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin consistently had higher stiffness and material strength and provided higher structural strength than the autopolymerizing bis-acrylic composite resin. Loading rate significantly affected the mechanical properties of polyethyl methacrylate resin (P<.05), but the effect was indistinct for the bis-acrylic materials.

Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) has been recognized as invaluable in delivering safe, high-quality patient care with finite resources. However, despite a decade of advances in interprofessional (IP) research, policy, and competency frameworks, IPCP does not always occur in practice. One reason may be the influence of a clinician's identity in an IP context. The purpose of this scoping review was to understand the nature of IP identity in healthcare clinicians. The PRISMA framework was used to support a comprehensive search strategy and screening of 1746 articles. Inclusion criteria included original research, theses, and reviews, a primary focus on IP identity or professional identity (PI) in an IP team, and a focus on health professionals, including students transitioning to practice. Ninety-five papers met the eligibility criteria, though once charted, just four of the 95 papers focused on IP identity in clinicians. Three further papers examined shared team identity, 25 papers referred to, but did not focus on IP identity, and the remaining 63 papers explored PI in an IP team. While limited studies on clinician IP identity restrict conclusive findings, patterns were identified to direct further research on the nature of IP identity in clinicians. These include values and beliefs, individual and personal factors, profession and professional experience, education, socialization, context, leadership, and the process of IP identity development. While identity is undeniably central to being a clinician, the values, beliefs, attributes, and experiences that contribute to clinician IP identity, how clinician IP identity develops, and factors that influence IP identity remain unclear. The results of this review highlight the value of further investigation of the nature of IP identity, the interplay between PI and IP identity, and identity in an IP context.
