In this paper, a method for the separation of triadimenol stereoisomers using ultra-performance convergence chromatography and an analytical method for the determination of triadimenol stereoisomer residues in pumpkin puree, apple puree, and tomato puree as a supplement for infants are established. Test samples were extracted with acetonitrile and successively purified with graphitized carbon black and Florisil column. Afterward, Acquity Trefoil AMY1 column was adopted for chiral separation of chromatographic column, and gradient elute was carried out with supercritical carbon dioxide-methanol as the mobile phase and with external standard method for quantitation. Results showed that the linearly dependent coefficient of the four kinds of triadimenol stereoisomers within 1.0 and 50 mg/L was greater than 0.9997, and the limit of quantitation of the four kinds of triadimenol stereoisomers was 0.05 mg/kg. Recovery experiment was carried out within 0.05 and 1.0 mg/kg scope, the recoveries were 81.0-107%, and the relative standard deviation was 2.3-7.6%. This method implemented the separation of triadimenol stereoisomers and its residue test in pumpkin puree, apple puree, and tomato puree as a supplement for infants, and it can provide reliable technical support for the analysis of pesticide residue and assessment of product quality.

Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) is a rare benign tumor of the central nervous system. Bilateral lateral ventricle CPP is extremely uncommon. In this case report, we described a case of bilateral lateral ventricle CPP in a 4-month-old female patient conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF). Neurological examination and imaging were performed. In neurological examination, meningeal irritation signs and sunset phenomenon were positive. Brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) displayed masses located in the trigone of the bilateral lateral ventricle with hydrocephalus. Contrast-enhanced MRI showed intense homogeneous enhancement. The diagnoses of bilateral lateral ventricle CPP related to hydrocephalus and extravasation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were made. Repeated surgical procedures via parietotemporal craniotomy were performed, and the diagnosis was confirmed by histopathology examination. The patient presented with delayed development during a follow-up period of 1 year. In conclusion, imaging is an effective approach of investigation. CPP could be highly suspected according to the features of hydrocephalus, lobulated appearance, and homogeneous enhancement on imaging. Total surgical removal is a valid curative method for CPP.

Marine diatom Skeletonema costatum is an important prey in the marine food web and is often used as a standard test organism in ecotoxicological studies. In this study, in vivo experiments were performed to analyze the effects of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C8mim]Br) on the growth, photosynthetic activity, and oxidative stress in S. costatum using 96h growth tests with a batch-culture system. The growth of S. costatum was significantly inhibited by [C8mim]Br with 48 and 96h-EC50 of 17.9 and 39.9mgL(-1), respectively. The maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and the light use efficiency (α) were inhibited by [C8mim]Br, which affected the growth of S. costatum. Subsequent biochemical assays in S. costatum revealed that [C8mim]Br induced changes of Chl a content, soluble protein content, and SOD activity, which had significant increases in low [C8mim]Br treatments (≤20mgL(-1)), but decreased in high [C8mim]Br exposures (≥40mgL(-1)). The increase of SOD activity at low concentrations (≤20mgL(-1)) may be considered as an active defense of S. costatum against [C8mim]Br stress by reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching. In addition, [C8mim]Br increased ROS level and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in S. costatum, suggesting that the physiological effects of [C8mim]Br are resulted from ROS generation.

Two pillared-layer metal-organic frameworks (MOFs; PMOF-55 and NH2 -PMOF-55) based on 1,2,4-triazole and terephthalic acid (bdc)/NH2 -bdc ligands were assembled and display framework stabilities, to a certain degree, in both acid/alkaline solutions and toward water. They exhibit high CO2 uptakes and selective CO2 /N2 adsorption capacities, with CO2 /N2 selectivity in the range of 24-27, as calculated by the ideal adsorbed solution theory method. More remarkably, the site and interactions between the host network and the CO2 molecules were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed that the main interaction between the CO2 molecules and PMOF-55 is due to multipoint supramolecular interactions of C-H⋅⋅⋅O, C⋅⋅⋅O, and O⋅⋅⋅O. Amino functional groups were shown to enhance the CO2 adsorption and identified as strong adsorption sites for CO2 by X-ray crystallography.

This paper studied the HPLC and NIRS fingerprints of Chrysanthemum with different processing methods, including directly drying, drying after steamed, and drying after fried. The method of discriminant analysis of TQ software was used to analysis the NIRS fingerprint of Chrysanthemum with three different processing methods, and the results were consistent with HPLC fingerprint similarity analysis. NIRS and HPLC fingerprints were of different characteristics, and the combination of the two methods can quickly and accurately identify Chrysanthemum with different processing methods.

A label-free and sensitive fluorescence method for recognition of sequence-specific DNA using DNA-intercalating dye and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is developed. Here, MIL-101 (Cr3F(H2O)2O[(O2C)-C6H4-(CO2)]3·nH2O) is introduced as a quenching platform to decrease the high background fluorescence of SYBR Green I (SG)/probe DNA complex. Mechanism investigations show that MIL-101 can strongly adsorb the SG/probe DNA complex through π-π stacking and electrostatic interactions, and as a consequence, the fluorescence of the SG dye is greatly quenched. While in the presence of target DNA, the as-formed rigid double-stranded (ds) structure of DNA will be far away from the surface of MIL-101; meanwhile, the SG dye can be bound with the dsDNA in the mode of intercalation and minor groove binding, resulting in enhancement of the SG dye fluorescence. The increased signal-to-background ratio has a linear relationship with the concentration of target DNA in the range of 0.1-14 nM. It is confirmed that the detection limit is 73 pM (3σ), which is much lower than that based on the carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide platform. Moreover, one-base-mismatched target DNA can be discriminated effectively. With the introduction of MIL-101, the signal-to-background ratio has been improved ∼8-fold, demonstrating that MIL-101 is an efficient low-background signal platform.

In weak acid medium, aluminum(III) can react with chlorophosphonazo III [CPA(III), H(8)L] to form a 1:1 coordination anion [Al(OH)(H(4)L)](2-). At the same time, proteins such as bovine serum albumin (BSA), lysozyme (Lyso) and human serum albumin (HSA) existed as large cations with positive charges, which further combined with [Al(OH)(H(4)L)](2-) to form a 1:4 chelate. This resulted in significant enhancement of resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS), second-order scattering (SOS) and frequency doubling scattering (FDS). In this study, we investigated the interaction between [Al(OH)(H(4)L)](2-) and proteins, optimization of the reaction conditions and the spectral characteristics of RRS, SOS and FDS. The maximum RRS wavelengths of different protein systems were located at 357-370 nm. The maximum SOS and FDS wavelengths were located at 546 and 389 nm, respectively. The scattering intensities (ΔI) of the three methods were proportional to the concentration of the proteins, within certain ranges, and the detection limits of the most sensitive RRS method were 2.6-9.3 ng/mL. Moreover, the chelate reaction mechanism or the reasons for the enhancement of RRS were discussed through absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra and circular dichroism (CD) spectra.

In Britton-Robinson (BR) buffer medium (pH 3.3), carbazochrome sodium sulfonate (CSS) can react with some aromatic amino acids such as tryptophan (Trp), tyrosine (Tyr) and phenylalanine (Phe) to form a 1:1 complex by electrostatic attraction, aromatic stacking interaction and Van der Waals' force, resulting in fluorescence quenching of these amino acids. Maximum quenching wavelengths were located at 352 nm (CSS-Trp system), 303 nm (CSS-Tyr system) and 284 nm (CSS-Phe system), respectively. The fluorescence quenching value (ΔF) was proportional to the concentration of CSS in a certain range. The fluorescence quenching method for the determination of CSS showed high sensitivity, with detection limits of 31.3 ng/mL (CSS-Trp system), 44.6 ng/mL (CSS-Tyr system) and 315.0 ng/mL (CSS-Phe system), respectively. The optimum conditions of the reaction conditions and the effect of coexisting substances were investigated and results showed that the method had good selectivity. The method was successfully applied for the rapid determination of CSS in blood and urine samples. Based on the bimolecular quenching constant Kq , the effect of temperature and Stern-Volmer plots, this study showed that quenching of fluorescence of amino acids by CSS was a static quenching process.

Iron (Fe) can promote hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and hydroxyl radical generation in the colonic surface and promote growth of Fe-dependent bacteria. Some Lactobacillus strains are resistant to oxygen free-radicals, allowing them to survive in a Fe-modulated mucosal environment and influence colon microbial ecology and redox state. Here, we investigated the capacity of lactobacilli with different antioxidant abilities to modify the bacterial profile and prevent oxidative stress in the colon of Fe-overloaded mice. Survival time of Lactobacillus rhamnosus LGG (LGG) in the presence of H(2)O(2) and hydroxyl radical was significantly longer compared with the mid- and non-antioxidative strains, Lactobacillus paracasei Fn032 and Lactobacillus plantarum Fn001, respectively. Different Lactobacillus strains are specific in free-radical scavenging activities of their cell-free extracts, which increased to varying extent depending on strains when bacteria were exposed to simulated gastric and pancreatic juice. Fe-overloaded mice showed increased colonic luminal ferrous Fe content, Enterococcus and Escherichia coli concentrations, mucosal malondialdehyde and free-radicals, and decreased mucosal total antioxidative capacity and oxidative enzymatic activity. Translocation of endotoxin to the liver was also significantly increased (P < 0.05). Lactobacilli inhibited ferrous Fe accumulation, especially in LGG and Fn032. LGG significantly inhibited the increase of colonic mucosal free-radicals and malondialdehyde content (P < 0.05). Fn032 only inhibited malondialdehyde (P < 0.05). LGG and Fn032 significantly inhibited increases in colonic Enterococcus (P < 0.05). Fn001 showed no significant antioxidative ability in vivo. The difference of these effects in vivo were well agreed with scavenging activities against reactive oxygen species (ROS) of simulated gastrointestinals fluid pretreated cells in vitro. In conclusion, ROS scavenging activities was essential for Lactobacillus to prevent oxidative stress in vivo and inhibition of ROS-producing bacterial growth and mucosal barrier injury.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of colostrum application on the establishment of normal flora in the intestinal tracts and oral cavities of extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWI). METHODS: A prospective cohort study design was adopted following the STROBE guidelines (Supplementary File 1). Colostrum was administered immediately after obtaining maternal breast milk using a special sterile cotton swab. There were no specific treatments for infants who did not receive colostrum. This experiment was completed on day 5 post-birth and the patients were divided into the colostrum and control groups, corresponding to whether or not colostrum was administered. Throat swabs and stool samples were collected on days 1 and 5 post-birth. RESULTS: Using the conventional bacteria cultivation technique, the detection rate of bacteria in 98 cases of meconium at birth was 15.31%. On day 5, the detection rates of Staphylococcus in the colostrum and control groups were 36.54% and 34.78%, with no significant difference between them (P = 0.856), and that of Enterococcus was 26.92% and 13.04%, respectively, with no statistically significant difference (P = 0.089). Likewise, at birth, the detection rate of bacteria in 98 cases of throat swabs was 27.55%. On day 5, the detection rate of Streptococcus in the colostrum and control groups was 78.85% and 50.00%, respectively, recording a statistically significant difference this time (P = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Colostrum application had limited effects on intestinal flora colonization but contributes to physiological oral flora colonization.

Objective: To elaborate the clinical characteristics of congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasia in a neonate with hydrops fetalis. This could be an alert in considering it as a differential diagnosis for neonates with acute respiratory failure. Methods: We reviewed and analyzed single-center registry patients who underwent cadaveric autopsies in the Department of Pathology at Children's Hospital from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2021. We aimed to explore the perinatal clinical manifestations associated with congenital pulmonary lymphangiectasis (CPL). Literature was reviewed to summarize the common features of CPL in pregnancy from individual cases, and to facilitate prenatal and intrapartum diagnosis prognosis, and assessment of medical emergencies. Results: Thirty-four patients were included, and the main causes of death were intrauterine infection (n = 6), severe pneumonia (n = 11), spontaneous pneumothorax (n = 3), hemorrhagic shock (n = 2), CPL (n = 1), and other non-respiratory failure manifestations (n = 12). The manifestations of respiratory distress in CPL were different from those of intrauterine infections and respiratory failure due to parenchymal lung lesions. These include prenatal presentation of fetal edema, postnatal presentation of uncorrectable respiratory failure with severe hypoproteinemia, pneumothorax and interstitial emphysema on imaging, and poor response to treatment with surfactant-like substances. Thus, when the pregnancy tests reveal fetal edema and postnatal presentation of acute, respiratory distress, the diagnosis of CPL should be considered first, and corresponding medical care should be implemented to improve the survival rate. Conclusions: CPL is a rare pulmonary defect, and its perinatal clinical manifestations can often be neglected. For children with prenatal fetal edema who die after birth due to progressive respiratory distress, a timely autopsy is of utmost importance to clarify the etiology, improve understanding of CPL, and diagnose early to allow for proper prenatal and postnatal care.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the matching degree between the donated supply and demand, clinical characteristics of both donors and recipients, along with the operation cost. Methods: From January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021, the data on human milk donation and usage, the clinical characteristics of donors and recipients, and the cost of each operating center were collected from the Manual Donation Registration Form and Information Management System of the selected human milk bank. Results: During the four years that the human milk bank was in operation, the volume of donated milk was slightly greater than the volume of consumed milk. A total of 1364 donors donated 2434.63 liters of qualified human milk, for RMB 1,791,000 (USD 257, 202), ie, RMB 385.3 (USD 55.3)/L; 97.8% of the donors were preterm puerperae, and 59% of the donors donated between 1 week and 1 month after delivery. All recipients were preterm infants and received donated human milk for a duration of 9.4 days on average. During the four years of operation, the proportion of donors who had previously received donated milk among all donors showed an overall increasing trend, while the incidence of NEC in preterm infants gradually decreased. Conclusions: The increasingly optimized structure of donors, the more economical operation, and the fact that the use of donated milk may not affect breastfeeding of the recipients have made it a human milk bank operation mode worthy of promotion.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Pulsatilla decoction (PD), is an herbal formula commonly used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) in clinical practice, but the mechanism of PD alters the colitis remains elusive. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the intervention effect of PD on Dextran Sodium Sulfate (DSS)-induced UC based on gut microbiota and intestinal short-chain fatty acid (SCFAs) metabolism, and to investigate the mechanism of action of PD in treating UC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3% (wt/vol) DSS-induced ulcerative colitis model in C57BL/6 male mice was used to evaluate the effect of oral PD in treating UC. The changes in gut microbiota in mice were analyzed by 16SrDNA gene sequencing, and the content of SCFAs in the intestinal contents of mice was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was applied to analyze the expression of inflammatory cytokines in serum and colonic tissues, and western blotting (WB) was applied to analyze the expression of tight junction proteins in colonic tissues. RESULTS: PD can alleviate the symptoms of UC mice, Pulsatilla Decoction high dose treatment group (PDHT) shows the best effect. Compared with the DSS group, the PDHT had significantly lower body mass, disease activity index (DAI) score, colonic macroscopic damage index (CMDI) score, and pathological damage score, at the phylum level, the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes increased while that of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria decreased, at the Genus level, the abundance of Bacteroides and Lachnospiraceae.NK4A136.group increased while that of Clostridium. sensu.stricto。, Escherichia. shigella and Turicibacter decreased. Compared with the DSS group, acetate, propionate, and total SCFAs in the PDHT with significantly higher levels. The concentrations of interleukin-1ß (L-1ß), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-17 (IL-17) decreased whereby the concentration of interleukin-10 (IL-10) increased in the PDHT group. The expression levels of Occludin, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), Claudin1, Claudin5, G protein-coupled receptor43 (GPR43) protein, and the relative expression of ZO-1 and Occludin mRNA were significantly increased PDHT group. CONCLUSIONS: PD has a good therapeutic effect on UC mice. The pharmacological mechanism is probably maintaining the homeostasis and diversity of gut microbiota, increasing the content of SCFAs, and repairing the colonic mucosal barrier.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the value of gemstone spectral imaging (GSI) combined with an 80 mm wide-body detector in head-neck CTA. METHODS: Ninety patients with head-neck CTA were prospectively selected and randomly divided into a control group and a test group, with 45 patients in each group. The control group was scanned conventionally. With a tube voltage of 100 kVp and detector width of 40 mm, a 70 ml contrast agent was injected at a flow rate of 5.0 ml/s. The test group used GSI. With a tube current fixed of 445 mAs and a detector width of 80 mm, the contrast agent was injected at a flow rate of 3.5 ml/s and 0.6 ml/kg body weight, and the 55 keV virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) were automatically reconstructed. Finally, the target vessel CT values, background noise (BN), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), subjective scores, contrast agent dose, CT dose index volume (CTDIvol), and dose length product (DLP) were recorded. The DLP was converted to the effective dose (ED). RESULTS: The target vessel CT values, BN, SNR, CNR, and subjective scores of the two groups were not statistically significant (all P > 0.05), and the image quality of both groups was the same and met the diagnostic requirements. The contrast agent dose and effective dose (ED) in the test group were approximately 44% and 26% lower than that of the control group, respectively (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In head-neck CTA examination, the Revolution CT GSI combined with an 80 mm wide-body detector can reduce the contrast agent dose and radiation dose while ensuring image quality.

Objective: This study aims to explore the difficulties related to fresh colostrum feeding for very (extremely) low birth weight infants (VLBWI/ELBWI) and optimize the colostrum administration process. Methods: The VLBWI/ELBWI who were admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit from January to December 2021, were enrolled as the experimental group, and an optimized colostrum feeding process was adopted. The VLBWI/ELBWI admitted from January to December 2020 were enrolled as the control group, and a conventional feeding process was adopted. The general situation of colostrum supply, number of adverse feeding events, maternal breastfeeding rate at the critical time points. Results: There were no significant differences between the baseline charatcteristics of the 2 groups. In the experimental group, compared with the control group, the time to first colostrum collection was significantly shorter (64.8% vs. 57.8% p < 0.05), and the rates of colostrum feeding (44.1% vs. 70.5% p < 0.001), and of maternal breastfeeding at 2 weeks after birth (56.1% vs. 46.7%, p < 0.05) and on the day of discharge (46.2% vs. 37.8%, p < 0.05) were significantly higher. Before and after process optimization, the average total time required for the time for nurses to receive the colostrum in the NICU reduced from 7.5 min/time to 2 min/time, and no feeding-related adverse events occurred. Conclusion: Fresh colostrum feeding process optimization for VLBWI/ELBWI, improves the colostrum feeding rate, shortens the time to first colostrum collection, saves the working time of nurses, and improves the maternal breastfeeding rate at key time points.

The number of studies on plant transcriptomes using ONT RNAseq technology is rapidly increasing in recent. It is a powerful method to decipher transcriptomic complexity, particularly alternative splicing (AS) event detection. Citrus plants are the most important widely grown fruit crops. Exploring different AS events in citrus contributes to transcriptome improvement and functional genome study. Here, we performed ONT RNAseq in 9 species (Atalantia buxifolia, Citrus clementina, C. grandis, C. ichangensis, C. reticulata, C. sinensis, Clausena lansium, Fortunella hindsii, and Poncirus trifoliata), accompanied with Illumina sequencing. Non-redundant full-length isoforms were identified between 41,957 and 76,974 per species. Systematic analysis including different types of isoforms, number of isoforms per gene locus, isoform distribution, ORFs and lncRNA prediction and functional annotation were performed mainly focused on novel isoforms, unraveling the capability of novel isoforms detection and characterization. For AS events prediction, A3, RI, and AF were overwhelming types across 9 species. We analyzed isoform similarity and evolutionary relationships in all species. We identified that multiple isoforms derived from orthologous single copy genes among different species were annotated as enzymes, nuclear-related proteins or receptors. Isoforms with extending sequences on 5', 3', or both compared with reference genome were filtered out to provide information for transcriptome improvement. Our results provide novel insight into comprehending complex transcriptomes in citrus and valuable information for further investigation on the function of genes with diverse isoforms.

To the best of our knowledge, thus far there are no reported cases of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) with multiple complications. In this case report, we describe the clinical phenotype of MNTI in a 9-month-old female infant associated with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), a congenital heart defect, and congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Our study showed that the growth of MNTI was delayed by a lower dosage of levothyroxine (L-T4) that was prescribed to treat CH because of the presence of TOF, a severe congenital heart disease. However, the standardized dosage of L-T4 improved thyroid function but stimulated the rapid growth of MNTI. Our report demonstrated that treatment with L-T4 affects the progression of MNTI. Our findings demonstrated the role of thyroid hormone in MNTI growth and progression. Furthermore, our study suggested that the treatment of co-morbidities in children with MNTI requires careful consideration of their effects on the growth and progression of MNTI.

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) is the 7th most common type of cancer in the world. Through the advantages of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) large-scale sequencing-based genome analysis technology, we can explore the potential molecular mechanisms that can improve the prognosis of HNSC patients. Methods: The HNSC transcriptome and clinical data were downloaded from TCGA database. A univariate survival analysis and differential expression analysis were conducted to obtain the intersection gene set. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis, modular analysis, and Gene Ontology (GO)/Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional enrichment analysis were then conducted to identify the hub genes. Clinical correlation analysis, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed on the identified hub genes to determine the prognostic impact of hub genes on HNSC patients. Results: In total, 601 intersecting gene sets were obtained. A modular analysis was conducted, and the highest scoring module was 19.304. Based on the GO/KEGG enrichment analysis results, CD247 molecule (CD247) was ultimately selected as the gene for this study. The CD247 were divided into a high-expression group and a low-expression group. The Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the 2 groups (P<0.0001). The median survival time of the low-expression CD247 group was 30.9 months, and the 5-year survival rate was 36.4%. While the median survival time of the high-expression CD247 group was 68.8 months, and the 5-year survival rate was 52.3%. The clinical correlation analysis showed that CD247 was significantly negatively correlated with pathological tumor stage (pT) and pathological nodal extracapsular spread. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) showed that CD247 activating KEGG pathway hsa04650 and hsa04660. Conclusions: CD247 is an independent protective factor in the prognosis of HNSC patients. By activating the hsa04650 and hsa04660 pathways, the expression of interferon gamma, interleukin (IL)-2, and IL-10 is promoted, which in turn improves the tumor immune monitoring ability of the body, induces tumor cell apoptosis, and inhibits tumor cell growth. CD247 is a potential target for improving the clinical treatment effect of HNSC and the prognosis of patients.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis (AMS) is widespread mutualistic association between plants and fungi, which plays an essential role in nutrient exchange, enhancement in plant stress resistance, development of host, and ecosystem sustainability. Previous studies have shown that plant small secreted proteins (SSPs) are involved in beneficial symbiotic interactions. However, the role of SSPs in the evolution of AMS has not been well studied yet. In this study, we performed computational analysis of SSPs in 60 plant species and identified three AMS-specific ortholog groups containing SSPs only from at least 30% of the AMS species in this study and three AMS-preferential ortholog groups containing SSPs from both AMS and non-AMS species, with AMS species containing significantly more SSPs than non-AMS species. We found that independent lineages of monocot and eudicot plants contained genes in the AMS-specific ortholog groups and had significant expansion in the AMS-preferential ortholog groups. Also, two AMS-preferential ortholog groups showed convergent changes, between monocot and eudicot species, in gene expression in response to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis. Furthermore, conserved cis-elements were identified in the promoter regions of the genes showing convergent gene expression. We found that the SSPs, and their closely related homologs, in each of three AMS-preferential ortholog groups, had some local variations in the protein structural alignment. We also identified genes co-expressed with the Populus trichocarpa SSP genes in the AMS-preferential ortholog groups. This first plant kingdom-wide analysis on SSP provides insights on plant-AMS convergent evolution with specific SSP gene expression and local diversification of protein structures.

A continuous increase in ambient temperature caused by global warming has been considered a worldwide threat. As sessile organisms, plants have evolved sophisticated heat shock response (HSR) to respond to elevated temperatures and other abiotic stresses, thereby minimizing damage and ensuring the protection of cellular homeostasis. In particular, for perennial trees, HSR is crucial for their long life cycle and development. HSR is a cell stress response that increases the number of chaperones including heat shock proteins (HSPs) to counter the negative effects on proteins caused by heat and other stresses. There are a large number of HSPs in plants, and their expression is directly regulated by a series of heat shock transcription factors (HSFs). Therefore, understanding the detailed molecular mechanisms of woody plants in response to extreme temperature is critical for exploring how woody species will be affected by climate changes. In this review article, we summarize the latest findings of the role of HSFs and HSPs in the HSR of woody species and discuss their regulatory networks and cross talk in HSR. In addition, strategies and programs for future research studies on the functions of HSFs and HSPs in the HSR of woody species are also proposed.
