RESUMO

Novel physical properties appear when the size of a superconductor is reduced to the nanoscale, in the range of its superconducting coherence length (ξ0). Such nanosuperconductors are being investigated for potential applications in nanoelectronics and quantum computing. The design of three-dimensional nanosuperconductors allows one to conceive novel schemes for such applications. Here, we report for the first time the use of a He+ focused-ion-beam-microscope in combination with the W(CO)6 precursor to grow three-dimensional superconducting hollow nanowires as small as 32 nm in diameter and with an aspect ratio (length/diameter) of as much as 200. Such extreme resolution is achieved by using a small He+ beam spot of 1 nm for the growth of the nanowires. As shown by transmission electron microscopy, they display grains of large size fitting with face-centered cubic WC1-x phase. The nanowires, which are grown vertically to the substrate, are felled on the substrate by means of a nanomanipulator for their electrical characterization. They become superconducting at 6.4 K and show large critical magnetic field and critical current density resulting from their quasi-one-dimensional superconducting character. These results pave the way for future nanoelectronic devices based on three-dimensional nanosuperconductors.

RESUMO

Nickel is capable of discharging electric and magnetic shocks in aerospace materials thanks to its conductivity and magnetism. Nickel nanowires are especially desirable for such an application as electronic percolation can be achieved without significantly increasing the weight of the composite material. In this work, single-crystal nickel nanowires possessing a homogeneous magnetic field are produced via a metal-organic precursor decomposition synthesis in solution. The nickel wires are 20 nm in width and 1-2 µm in length. The high anisotropy is attained through a combination of preferential crystal growth in the ⟨100⟩ direction and surfactant templating using hexadecylamine and stearic acid. The organic template ligands protect the nickel from oxidation, even after months of exposure to ambient conditions. These materials were studied using electron holography to characterize their magnetic properties. These thin nanowires display homogeneous ferromagnetism with a magnetic saturation (517 ± 80 emu cm-3), which is nearly equivalent to that of bulk nickel (557 emu cm-3). Nickel nanowires were incorporated into carbon composite test pieces and were shown to dramatically improve the electric discharge properties of the composite material.

RESUMO

The selective oxidation of ethylene to ethylene epoxide is highly challenging as a result of competing reaction pathways leading to the deep oxidation of both ethylene and ethylene oxide. Herein we present a novel catalyst based on silver and copper oxide with an excellent response in the selective oxidation pathway towards ethylene epoxide. The catalyst is composed of different silver nanostructures dispersed on a tubular copper oxide matrix. This type of hybrid nanoarchitecture seems to facilitate the accommodation of chlorine promoters, leading to high yields at low reaction temperatures. The stability after the addition of chlorine promoters implies a substantial improvement over the industrial practice: a single pretreatment step at ambient pressure suffices in contrast with the common practice of continuously feeding organochlorinated precursors during the reaction.

RESUMO

Transition-metal nanocatalysis represents a novel alternative currently experiencing flourishing progress to tackle the tumor microenvironment (TME) in cancer therapy. These nanomaterials aim at attacking tumor cells using the intrinsic selectivity of inorganic catalysts. In addition, special attention to tune and control the release of these transition metals is also required. Understanding the chemical reactions behind the catalytic action of the transition-metal nanocatalysts and preventing potential undesired side reactions caused by acute cytotoxicity of the released ionic species represent another important field of research. Specifically, copper-based oxides may suffer from acute leaching that potentially may induce toxicity not only to target cancer cells but also to nearby cells and tissues. In this work, we propose the synthesis of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) nanostructures capable of triggering two key reactions for an effective chemodynamic therapy (CDT) in the heterogeneous phase: (i) glutathione (GSH) oxidation and (ii) oxidation of organic substrates using H2O2, with negligible leaching of metals under TME-like conditions. This represents an appealing alternative toward the development of safer copper-iron-based nanocatalytic materials with an active catalytic response without incurring leaching side phenomena.

RESUMO

The paper describes a novel and straightforward wet-chemical synthetic route to produce biocompatible single-crystalline gold tabular nanoparticles, herein called nanoprisms (NPRs) due to their characteristic shape. Besides the novelty of the method to produce NPRs with an unprecedented high yield, the synthesis avoids the use of highly toxic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), the most widely used surfactant for the synthesis of gold anisotropic nanoparticles such as nanorods or nanoprisms. The method presented here allows for tuning the edge length of NPRs in the range of 100-170 nm by adjusting the final concentration/molar ratio of gold salt and reducing agent (thiosulfate), while the thickness of NPRs remained constant (9 nm). Thus, the surface plasmon band of NPRs can be set along the near-infrared (NIR) range. The resulting NPRs were derivatized with heterobifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) and 4-aminophenyl ß-D-glucopyranoside (glucose) chains to improve their stability and cellular uptake, respectively. The heating properties of colloidal solutions of NPRs upon 1064 nm light illumination were evaluated. As a proof of concept, the biocompatibility and suitability of functional NPRs as photothermal agents were studied in cell cultures. Due to their biocompatibility (avoiding CTAB), ease of production, ease of functionalization, and remarkable heating features, the NPRs discussed herein represent a significant advance in the biocompatibility of nanoparticles and serve as an attractive alternative to those currently in use as plasmonic photothermal agents.

RESUMO

Objectives: Exposure to silica nanoparticles has been associated with pleural effusions (PEs) in animal models and case series. We hypothesized that some PEs labelled as "idiopathic" could, in fact, be secondary to inhalation of silica. Methods: A retrospective case control study was designed utilizing a prospectively maintained pleural database. Cases, represented by idiopathic PEs, were matched by age and gender to control patients who had been diagnosed with malignant, cardiac, or infectious PEs. A survey consisting of questions about occupational life and possibility of silica inhalation was conducted. In a subgroup of patients, pleural fluid concentrations of silica were quantified by plasma atomic emission spectrometry analysis. Also, the pleural biopsy of a silica-exposed case was subjected to an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to identify the mineral, the size of which was determined by electron microscopy. Results: A total of 118 patients (59 cases and 59 controls) completed the survey. There were 25 (42%, 95% CI 31-55%) and 13 (22%, 95% CI 13-34%) silica-exposed workers in case and control groups, respectively. The exposure attributable fraction was 0.62 (95% CI 0.14-0.83). Four of eight exposed cases showed detectable levels of silica in the pleural fluid (mean 2.37 mg/L), as compared to none of 16 tested controls. Silica nanoparticles of 6-7 nm were identified in the pleural biopsy of an exposed case patient. Conclusions: It is plausible that some idiopathic PEs could actually be caused by occupational silica inhalation.

RESUMO

Here, we synthesize a Au@Fe3O4 core@shell system with a highly uniform unprecedented star-like shell morphology with combined plasmonic and magnetic properties. An advanced electron microscopy characterization allows assessing the multifaceted nature of the Au core and its role in the growth of the peculiar epitaxial star-like shell with excellent crystallinity and homogeneity. Magnetometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy revealed a pure magnetite shell, with a superior saturation magnetization compared to similar Au@Fe3O4 heterostructures reported in the literature, which is ascribed to the star-like morphology, as well as to the large thickness of the shell. Of note, Au@Fe3O4 nanostar-loaded cancer cells displayed magneto-mechanical stress under a low frequency external alternating magnetic field (few tens of Hz). On the other hand, such a uniform, homogeneous, and thick magnetite shell enables the shift of the plasmonic resonance of the Au core to 640 nm, which is the largest red shift achievable in Au@Fe3O4 homogeneous core@shell systems, prompting application in photothermal therapy and optical imaging in the first biologically transparent window. Preliminary experiments performing irradiation of a stable water suspension of the nanostar and Au@Fe3O4-loaded cancer cell culture suspension at 658 nm confirmed their optical response and their suitability for photothermal therapy. The outstanding features of the prepared system can be thus potentially exploited as a multifunctional platform for magnetic-plasmonic applications.

RESUMO

Currently, the patterning of innovative three-dimensional (3D) nano-objects is required for the development of future advanced electronic components. Helium ion microscopy in combination with a precursor gas can be used for direct writing of three-dimensional nanostructures with a precise control of their geometry, and a significantly higher aspect ratio than other additive manufacturing technologies. We report here on the deposition of 3D hollow tungsten carbide nanowires with tailored diameters by tuning two key growth parameters, namely current and dose of the ion beam. Our results show the control of geometry in 3D hollow nanowires, with outer and inner diameters ranging from 36 to 142 nm and from 5 to 28 nm, respectively; and lengths from 0.5 to 8.9 µm. Transmission electron microscopy experiments indicate that the nanowires have a microstructure of large grains with a crystalline structure compatible with the face-centered cubic WC1- x phase. In addition, 3D electron tomographic reconstructions show that the hollow center of the nanowires is present along the whole nanowire length. Moreover, these nanowires become superconducting at 6.8 K and show high values of critical magnetic field and critical current density. Consequently, these 3D nano-objects could be implemented as components in the next generation of electronics, such as nano-antennas and sensors, based on 3D superconducting architectures.

RESUMO

A key challenge for designing hybrid materials is the development of chemical tools to control the organization of inorganic nanoobjects at low scales, from mesoscopic (~µm) to nanometric (~nm). So far, the most efficient strategy to align assemblies of nanoparticles consists in a bottom-up approach by decorating block copolymer lamellae with nanoobjects. This well accomplished procedure is nonetheless limited by the thermodynamic constraints that govern copolymer assembly, the entropy of mixing as described by the Flory-Huggins solution theory supplemented by the critical influence of the volume fraction of the block components. Here we show that a completely different approach can lead to tunable 2D lamellar organization of nanoparticles with homopolymers only, on condition that few elementary rules are respected: 1) the polymer spontaneously allows a structural preorganization, 2) the polymer owns functional groups that interact with the nanoparticle surface, 3) the nanoparticles show a surface accessible for coordination.

RESUMO

The development of reproducible protocols to synthesize hard/soft nano-heterostructures (NHSs) with tailored magnetic properties is a crucial step to define their potential application in a variety of technological areas. Thermal decomposition has proved to be an effective tool to prepare such systems, but it has been scarcely used so far for the synthesis of Co-based metal/ferrite NHSs, despite their intriguing physical properties. We found a new approach to prepare this kind of nanomaterial based on a simple one-pot thermal decomposition reaction of metal-oleate precursors in the high boiling solvent docosane. The obtained NHSs are characterized by the coexistence of Co metal and Co doped magnetite and are highly stable in an air atmosphere, thanks to the passivation of the metal with a very thin oxide layer. The investigation of the influence of the metal precursor composition (a mixed iron-cobalt oleate), of the ligands (oleic acid and sodium oleate) and of the reaction time on the chemical and structural characteristics of the final product, allowed us to rationalize the reaction pathway and to determine the role of each parameter. In particular, the use of sodium oleate is crucial to obtain a metal phase in the NHSs. In such a way, the one-pot approach proposed here allows the fine control of the synthesis, leading to the formation of stable, high performant, metal/ferrite NHSs with tailored magnetic properties. For instance, the room temperature maximum energy product was increased up to 19 kJ m-3 by tuning the Co content in the metal precursor.

RESUMO

We report a single-step chemical synthesis of iron oxide hollow nanospheres with 9.3 nm in diameter. The sample presents a narrow particle diameter distribution and chemical homogeneity. The hollow nature of the particles is confirmed by HRTEM and HAADF STEM analysis. Electron and x-ray diffraction show that the outer material component is constituted by 2 nm ferrite crystals. Mössbauer data provide further evidence for the formation of iron oxide with high structural disorder, magnetically ordered at 4.2 K and superparamagnetism at room temperature. An unusual magnetic behavior under an applied field is reported, which can be explained by the large fraction of atoms existing at both inner and outer surfaces.

RESUMO

The Linear Response Theory (LRT) is a widely accepted framework to analyze the power absorption of magnetic nanoparticles for magnetic fluid hyperthermia. Its validity is restricted to low applied fields and/or to highly anisotropic magnetic nanoparticles. Here, we present a systematic experimental analysis and numerical calculations of the specific power absorption for highly anisotropic cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) magnetic nanoparticles with different average sizes and in different viscous media. The predominance of Brownian relaxation as the origin of the magnetic losses in these particles is established, and the changes of the Specific Power Absorption (SPA) with the viscosity of the carrier liquid are consistent with the LRT approximation. The impact of viscosity on SPA is relevant for the design of MNPs to heat the intracellular medium during in vitro and in vivo experiments. The combined numerical and experimental analyses presented here shed light on the underlying mechanisms that make highly anisotropic MNPs unsuitable for magnetic hyperthermia.

RESUMO

The use of nanomaterials in real life applications is often hampered by our inability to produce them in large quantities while preserving their desired properties in terms of size, shape, and crystalline phase. Here we present a novel continuous method to synthesize nanostructures with an unprecedented degree of control regarding their properties. In particular, the excellent properties of microreactors for chemical synthesis are enhanced by the introduction of gas slugs of tailored composition. Slug dynamics accelerate mixing, reduce processing times (from hours in batch processes to minutes or even seconds), and, depending on the gas atmosphere used, allows one to accurately control the crystalline phase and shape of the resulting nanostructures. Inert (N2), oxidizing (O2), or reducing (CO, H2) gases were used, leading to different morphologies and crystalline structures in a high yield, highly reproducible fabrication process.

RESUMO

An exquisite control of synthesis parameters is generally required in nanomaterial synthesis to guarantee consistency in the essential characteristics such as size and shape. On the other hand, reliable scaled-up production of nanomaterials is required in order to achieve the production rates required for emerging nanotechnology applications while delivering a consistent product with the intended characteristics, avoiding the traditional batch-to-batch deviations. The continuous production of nanomaterials is challenging because of the difficulties involved in translating the complexity of nanomaterial synthesis into on-line operations. In this regard, microfluidic platforms stand out over conventional batch reactors due to their superior performance, easy scalability and reliability. Here, a continuous, scaled-up synthesis of high quality plasmonic hollow gold nanoparticles is reported for the first time. Not only was the throughput significantly higher than in a batch reactor, but also the microfluidic system allowed the on-line implementation of two new stages in nanomaterial production: surface functionalization and sterilization.

RESUMO

Ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (Au UNPs) represent a unique class of nanomaterials making them very attractive for certain applications. Herein, we developed an organometallic approach to the synthesis of Au UNPs stabilized with the C18H37-NHC ligand by the solvent free thermolysis of [RMIM][Au(C6F5)2] () or [Au(C6F5)(RNHC)] () (with R = C18H37-), by controlling the reactivity of pentafluorophenyl ligands as deprotonating or reductive elimination agents; Au UNPs can be achieved by solvent free thermolysis. Pentafluorophenyl Au(i) complexes and are synthesized from the corresponding ionic and neutral precursors. The presence of long alkyl chain imidazolium or carbene species in the complexes makes them to behave as isotropic liquids at moderate temperatures. The use of multinuclear NMR allows the description of the mechanism of formation of the UNPs as well as the surface state of the UNPs.

RESUMO

Here we report the chemical synthesis of cobalt aluminum oxide (CoAl2O4) nanoparticles by a non-aqueous sol-gel route. The one-pot procedure is carried out at mild temperatures (in the 150 to 300 °C range), and consists of the reaction between cobalt acetate and aluminium isopropoxide in benzyl alcohol. The resulting CoAl2O4 nanoparticles show an unusually low average size, between 2.5 and 6.2 nm, which can be controlled by the synthesis temperature. The colorimetric properties of the nanoparticles are also determined by the synthesis temperature and the characteristic blue color of CoAl2O4 pigments is achieved in samples prepared at T ≥ 200 °C. The nanoparticles are antiferromagnetically ordered below ∼27 K with an uncompensated configuration. The uncompensated moment shows the typical features of strongly interacting superparamagnetic nanoparticles and spin-glass systems.
