RESUMO

Human Papillomaviruses (HPV) are the cause of benign human anogenital lesions where HPV 6 and HPV 11 are most commonly found. Conversely, HPV 16, 18, 31 and 33 are frequently detected in genital carcinomas and are thus considered as oncogenic types. In order to analyze the prevalence of specific HPV types in an Argentine male population, 43 anogenital lesions from different patients with diagnosis of condyloma acuminata were analyzed. These lesions were localized in different regions of the male genitalia comprising the corona glandis, urethral meatus, skin of the penis, scrotum and anus. The biopsies were screened for the presence of HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 30, 31 and 33 by Southern blot at different stringent conditions of hybridization (Tm -48 degrees C and Tm -20 degrees C). HPV DNA was found in 41 examined cases (95.3%) with a clear prevalence of HPV 6 and HPV 11 types (51.2% and 23.3% respectively). Six samples (14.0%) were positive only under nonstringent conditions of hybridization. Mixed infections between HPV 16, 18, 30, 31, 33 or a HPV 30 related type with HPV 6 or HPV 11 were detected in 8 specimens (18.6%). Only one case was between HPV 16 and HPV 30. Two additional samples were only positive for HPV 30. Experiments in progress about the prevalence of HPV types in female lesions as well as in normal subjects will contribute to complete the description of the epidemiology of these infections in Argentina.

RESUMO

A case of Bowenoid Papulosis of the genitalia in a young man is reported: The clinical, etioly and pathogenic aspects are reviewed, as well as the bibliography. The existence of this entity should be very well kept in mind by dermatologists in order to avoid unnecessary mutilations.

RESUMO

Seventy patients with locally progressive and/or recurrent mammary cancer or with metastatic lesions located on the area of the surgical procedure were evaluated. Several clinical parameters related to the natural history of the disease were outlined. Some of them kept a close link with the therapeutical results. A dermatological classification of the local recurrencies was made based on the clinical aspects. The improvement of the local recurrencies was classified as total or partial according to the response to the treatment. The association of chemotherapy, anabolic drugs and corticosteroids was the uniform treatment for all the cutaneous lesions. Some of these patients achieve a good therapeutical result. These were the patients with a free interval of more than two years and those with bilateral cancer who have had surgical excision. The other group formed by patients where adrenalectomy was performed or with local recurrencies before the two years period has developed a shorter survival time than the first group. The combined of chemotherapy and hormone treatment is useful in dealing with local recurrent or metastatic skin lesions of mammary cancer.

RESUMO

The bone lesions usually seen in Kaposi's sarcoma are described. Three patients with moderately severe skin lesions who showed bone lesions are reported. X-rays examination showed different types of pathologic aspects which are described. A thorough evaluation searching for bone lesions should be made in all cases of Kaposi's sarcoma, mainly those with extensive cutaneous lesions.

RESUMO

A 23 year-old woman with sarcoidosis initiated her illness with painful nodules located in palms and soles. This is un unusual clinical finding. Sarcoidosis must be included in the differential diagnosis of painful palmoplantar nodules.

RESUMO

Fifty patients with various long lasting skin diseases were examined. Past history and digestive-nutritional symptoms were recorded. Two or three samples of distal duodenum, elimination of fecal fat and d-xylose absortion test were intended to be performed in all patients, but this coincident parameters were obtained in only 35 patients. Twenty two of these patients were classified as abnormal by 1 of the 3 investigations (62,85%), and 9 (25,71%) were abnormal by 2 criteria. In addition to these usual studies, vit B12 and folic acid absortion were tested in 12 and 23 cases respectively. Distribution does not allow for comparison of the "sensibility" of such tests with the forementioned ones. While only 2 of the 12 patients showed defective absorption of B12, 8 of 22 cases presented with defect of absorption of folic acid. Of this last group, 5 were cases of eritrodermia (the test was performed in 6 cases with this diagnosis). In the total series of 50 cases, including those not thoroughly studied, 27 (54%) presented at least with one abnormal study. These observations point to the possible frequency of intestinal absorption alterations, in several skin diseases, though of moderate degree and pertaining to variable absorption functions. They validate the prosecution of the study, with the aim of clarifying the etio-pathogenesis of some dermatological entities and trying to contribute to their therapy.

RESUMO

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa has a rare recessive polydysplastic vegetant variant, which was described by Nicolas et al. Two siblings are reported. The male was affected by urethral lesions, an exceptional finding in this disease. Many members in family died of renal insufficiency . A variety of therapeutics was indicated along ten years. Only hydantoins caused a marked involution of the lesions. An interesting feature was that high drug levels in the blood produced not only common side effects, such as macrulia , but also exacerbation of the dermatosis and growth of new lesions, which took on a botriomicoid aspect.

RESUMO

A multi-institutional double blind study was performed in 66 patients in order to evaluate the action of human leukocyte interferon, type alpha (IFN) in lesions produced by herpes simplex virus. Lesions were localized in genital area in 34 cases and in facial area in 32 of them. From the total, 38 patients were treated with 7,000 Ul/gm. of interferon ointment and 28 with carbowax 4,000 as placebo. The symptoms pain, ardor, itching and paresthesia were evaluated asking to patients. Erythema, vesicles, crust, scale adenopathy were objectivated. Signs and symptoms were controlled on days 3 and 7 of treatment. In 42 patients, lesions specimens were taken for virus isolation. In 23 of them, cytopathic effect was detected (54.76%). Results showed a rapid relief from pain (p less than 0.05), ardor (p less than 0.01) and paresthesia (p less than 0.001) and also accelerated healing of vesicles in patients treated with interferon. Tendency to reduce the total time of the disease in those patients treated with IFN was observed.

RESUMO

Three cases of Kaposi's sarcoma involving the conjunctiva are reported. The first patient had been affected by a single lesion on the glans penis. In the second patient the conjunctival lesion adopted a peculiar globular shape. The third patient had been treated with corticosteroids for pemphigus when the Kaposi's sarcoma lesion appeared. Although these conjunctival lesions are extremely rare, dermatologists should not rule out the possibility of Kaposi's sarcoma with ocular involvement, bearing in mind its higher incidence because of the epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and the increasing number of patients with immunosuppression.
