The mammalian hippocampus can generate new neurons throughout life. Known as adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN), this process participates in learning, memory, mood regulation, and forgetting. The continuous incorporation of new neurons enhances the plasticity of the hippocampus and contributes to the cognitive reserve in aged individuals. However, the integrity of AHN is targeted by numerous pathological conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases and sustained inflammation. In this regard, the latter causes cognitive decline, mood alterations, and multiple AHN impairments. In fact, the systemic administration of Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from E. coli to mice (a model of sepsis) triggers depression-like behavior, impairs pattern separation, and decreases the survival, maturation, and synaptic integration of adult-born hippocampal dentate granule cells. Here we tested the capacity of the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin to neutralize the deleterious consequences of LPS administration in female C57BL6J mice. This antibiotic exerted potent neuroprotective effects. It reversed the increased immobility time during the Porsolt test, hippocampal secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and AHN impairments. Moreover, azithromycin promoted the synaptic integration of adult-born neurons and functionally remodeled the gut microbiome. Therefore, our data point to azithromycin as a clinically relevant drug with the putative capacity to ameliorate the negative consequences of chronic inflammation by modulating AHN and hippocampal-related behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) is a silent and threatening dilation of the ascending aorta (AscAo). Maximal aortic diameter which is currently used for ATAA patients management and surgery planning has been shown to inadequately characterize risk of dissection in a large proportion of patients. Our aim was to propose a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of aortic morphology and pressure-flow-wall associations from four-dimensional (4D) flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) data in healthy aging and in patients with ATAA. METHODS: We studied 17 ATAA patients (64.7 ± 14.3 years, 5 females) along with 17 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (59.7 ± 13.3 years, 5 females) and 13 younger healthy subjects (33.5 ± 11.1 years, 4 females). All subjects underwent a CMR exam, including 4D flow and three-dimensional anatomical images of the aorta. This latter dataset was used for aortic morphology measurements, including AscAo maximal diameter (iDMAX) and volume, indexed to body surface area. 4D flow MRI data were used to estimate 1) cross-sectional local AscAo spatial (∆PS) and temporal (∆PT) pressure changes as well as the distance (∆DPS) and time duration (∆TPT) between local pressure peaks, 2) AscAo maximal wall shear stress (WSSMAX) at peak systole, and 3) AscAo flow vorticity amplitude (VMAX), duration (VFWHM), and eccentricity (VECC). RESULTS: Consistency of flow and pressure indices was demonstrated through their significant associations with AscAo iDMAX (WSSMAX:r = -0.49, p < 0.001; VECC:r = -0.29, p = 0.045; VFWHM:r = 0.48, p < 0.001; ∆DPS:r = 0.37, p = 0.010; ∆TPT:r = -0.52, p < 0.001) and indexed volume (WSSMAX:r = -0.63, VECC:r = -0.51, VFWHM:r = 0.53, ∆DPS:r = 0.54, ∆TPT:r = -0.63, p < 0.001 for all). Intra-AscAo cross-sectional pressure difference, ∆PS, was significantly and positively associated with both VMAX (r = 0.55, p = 0.002) and WSSMAX (r = 0.59, p < 0.001) in the 30 healthy subjects (48.3 ± 18.0 years). Associations remained significant after adjustment for iDMAX, age, and systolic blood pressure. Superimposition of ATAA patients to normal aging trends between ∆PS and WSSMAX as well as VMAX allowed identifying patients with substantially high pressure differences concomitant with AscAo dilation. CONCLUSION: Local variations in pressures within ascending aortic cross-sections derived from 4D flow MRI were associated with flow changes, as quantified by vorticity, and with stress exerted by blood on the aortic wall, as quantified by wall shear stress. Such flow-wall and pressure interactions might help for the identification of at-risk patients.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Heart transplant recipients (HTr) have a higher probability of suffer from severe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in comparison to general population, but their risk has changed over the course of the pandemic in relation to various factors. We conducted a prospective study including all HTr at risk of COVID-19 in a tertiary center between February 2020 and October 2022. The aim was to analyze how the prognosis (incidence of pneumonia and mortality) of COVID-19 in HTr has evolved over time, contextualizing variants, vaccination, and other treatments. RESULTS: Of 308 HTr included, 124 got the infection (39.2%). COVID and non-COVID HTr had similar baseline characteristics. COVID-19 patients with pneumonia had a poorer prognosis than those with less severe presentations, with a higher rate of hospitalization (93.3 vs. 14.1%, p < .001) and death (41.0 vs. 1.2%, p < .001). Multivariate analysis identified age ≥60 years (odds ratio [OR] 3.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.16-11.49, p = .027), and chronic kidney disease ≥3a (OR 4.95, 95% CI 1.39-17.54, p = .014) as predictors of pneumonia. Two-dose vaccination (OR 0.20, CI 95% 0.05-0.72, p = .02) and early remdesivir administration (OR 0.17, CI 0.03-0.90, p = .037) were protective factors. Over the course of the pandemic considering three periods in the follow-up (prevaccination February-December 2020, postvaccination January-December 2021, and post early remdesivir indication January-October 2022), we observed a reduction in pneumonia incidence from 62% to 19% (p < .001); and mortality (from 23% to 4%, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The prognosis of COVID-19 in HTr has improved over time, likely due to vaccination and early administration of remdesivir.

Acetonitrile (CH3CN) is present in the interstellar medium (ISM) in a variety of environments. However, at the ultracold temperatures of the ISM, radical-molecule reactions are not widely investigated because of the experimental handicap of getting organic molecules in the gas phase by conventional techniques. The CRESU (French acronym for Reaction Kinetics in a Uniform Supersonic Flow) technique solves this problem. For this reason, we present in this work the kinetic study of the gas-phase reaction of CH3CN with one of the most ubiquitous radicals, the hydroxyl (OH) radical, as a function of temperature (11.7-177.5 K). The kinetic technique employed to investigate the CH3CN + OH reaction was the pulsed laser photolysis-laser induced fluorescence. The rate coefficient for this reaction k(T) has been observed to drastically increase from 177.5 K to 107.0 K (about 2 orders of magnitude), while the increase in k(T) from 107.0 K to 11.7 K was milder (around 4 times). The temperature dependent expressions for k(T) are provided in the two distinct T-ranges, excluding the upper limit obtained for k(177.5 K): In addition, the rate coefficients estimated by the canonical competitive unified statistical (CCUS) theory show a similar behaviour to the experimental results, when evaluated within the high-pressure limit. This is consistent with the experimentally observed independence of k(T) with total gas density at selected temperatures. Astrochemical networks, such as the KIDA database or UMIST, do not include the CH3CN + OH reaction as a potential depletion process for acetonitrile in the ISM because the current studies predict very low rate coefficients at IS temperatures. According to the model (T = 10 K), the impact of the titled reaction on the abundances of CH3CN appears to be negligible in dark molecular clouds of the ISM (∼1% of the total depletion reactions included in UMIST network). With respect to the potential formation of the CH2CN radical in those environments, even in the most favourable scenario, where this radical could be formed in a 100% yield from the CH3CN + OH reaction, this route would only contribute around 2% to the current assumed formation routes by the UMIST network.

Cancer cells can survive chemotherapy-induced stress, but how they recover from it is not known. Using a temporal multiomics approach, we delineate the global mechanisms of proteotoxic stress resolution in multiple myeloma cells recovering from proteasome inhibition. Our observations define layered and protracted programs for stress resolution that encompass extensive changes across the transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome. Cellular recovery from proteasome inhibition involved protracted and dynamic changes of glucose and lipid metabolism and suppression of mitochondrial function. We demonstrate that recovering cells are more vulnerable to specific insults than acutely stressed cells and identify the general control nonderepressable 2 (GCN2)-driven cellular response to amino acid scarcity as a key recovery-associated vulnerability. Using a transcriptome analysis pipeline, we further show that GCN2 is also a stress-independent bona fide target in transcriptional signature-defined subsets of solid cancers that share molecular characteristics. Thus, identifying cellular trade-offs tied to the resolution of chemotherapy-induced stress in tumor cells may reveal new therapeutic targets and routes for cancer therapy optimization.

PURPOSE: Although previous studies have highlighted the clinical relevance of the anterior scalene muscle (AS) in patients with neck pain or nerve compressive syndromes, evidence reporting the diagnostic accuracy of shear wave elastography (SWE) for assessing the AS stiffness properties is lacking. This study aimed to analyze the SWE inter-examiner reliability for calculating the Young's modulus and shear wave speed of the AS muscle in asymptomatic subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a linear transducer, ultrasound images of the antero-lateral neck region at the C7 level were acquired in 35 healthy volunteers by one experienced examiner and one novice examiner. After codifying the images to blind the participants' identity, the trial, and the side, Young's modulus and shear wave speed were obtained by an independent experienced rater in randomized order. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), minimal detectable changes (MDC), and coefficient of variation (CV%) were calculated. RESULTS: The assessed AS metrics showed no side-to-side differences (p>0.05). Sex differences were found for muscle size (p=0.002), but muscle brightness and stiffness were similar (p>0.05). Inter-examiner reliability was good for determining the AS muscle stiffness (ICC = 0.881 for Young's modulus and 0.850 for shear wave speed). CONCLUSION: The obtained results suggest that assessing the AS stiffness properties in asymptomatic subjects is a reliable procedure. Further studies should verify the SWE capacity for discriminating healthy and clinical populations and identify potential factors contributing to the variance of measurement errors.

The levator scapulae muscle is a key structure in the etiopathology of neck and shoulder musculoskeletal pain. Although previous studies used shear-wave elastography (SWE) for characterizing this muscle elasticity, limited evidence assessed the inter-examiner reliability of this procedure. This study aimed to analyze the inter-examiner reliability for calculating Young's modulus and shear wave speed in a cohort of participants with and without chronic neck pain. A diagnostic accuracy study was conducted, acquiring a set of SWE images at the C5 level in participants with and without neck pain (n = 34 and 33, respectively) by two examiners (one experienced and one novel). After blinding the participants' identity, examiner involved, and side, the stiffness indicators were calculated by an independent rater in a randomized order. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), standard error of measurement, minimal detectable changes, and coefficient of variation were calculated. Both cohorts had comparable sociodemographic characteristics (p > 0.05). No significant levator scapulae elasticity differences were found between genders, sides, or cohorts (all, p > 0.05). Inter-examiner reliability for calculating Young's modulus and shear wave speed was moderate-to-good for assessing asymptomatic individuals (ICC = 0.714 and 0.779, respectively), while poor-to-moderate in patients with neck pain (ICC = 0.461 and 0.546, respectively). The results obtained in this study support the use of this procedure for assessing asymptomatic individuals. However, reliability estimates were unacceptable to support its use for assessing elasticity in patients with chronic neck pain. Future studies might consider that the shear wave speed is more sensitive to detect real changes in comparison with Young's modulus.

The hippocampus hosts the continuous addition of new neurons throughout life-a phenomenon named adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN). Here we revisit the occurrence of AHN in more than 110 mammalian species, including humans, and discuss the further validation of these data by single-cell RNAseq and other alternative techniques. In this regard, our recent studies have addressed the long-standing controversy in the field, namely whether cells positive for AHN markers are present in the adult human dentate gyrus (DG). Here we review how we developed a tightly controlled methodology, based on the use of high-quality brain samples (characterized by short postmortem delays and ≤24 h of fixation in freshly prepared 4% paraformaldehyde), to address human AHN. We review that the detection of AHN markers in samples fixed for 24 h required mild antigen retrieval and chemical elimination of autofluorescence. However, these steps were not necessary for samples subjected to shorter fixation periods. Moreover, the detection of labile epitopes (such as Nestin) in the human hippocampus required the use of mild detergents. The application of this strictly controlled methodology allowed reconstruction of the entire AHN process, thus revealing the presence of neural stem cells, proliferative progenitors, neuroblasts, and immature neurons at distinct stages of differentiation in the human DG. The data reviewed here demonstrate that methodology is of utmost importance when studying AHN by means of distinct techniques across the phylogenetic scale. In this regard, we summarize the major findings made by our group that emphasize that overlooking fundamental technical principles might have consequences for any given research field.

Our automated reaction discovery program, AutoMeKin, has been utilized to investigate the formation of glycolonitrile (HOCH2CN) in the gas phase under the low temperatures of the interstellar medium (ISM). The feasibility of a proposed pathway depends on the absence of barriers above the energy of reactants and the availability of the suggested precursors in the ISM. Based on these criteria, several radical-radical reactions and a radical-molecule reaction have been identified as viable formation routes in the ISM. Among the radical-radical reactions, OH + CH2CN appears to be the most relevant, considering the energy of the radicals and its ability to produce glycolonitrile in a single step. However, our analysis reveals that this reaction produces hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) and formaldehyde (CH2O), with rate coefficients ranging from (7.3-11.5) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 across the temperature range of 10-150 K. Furthermore, the identification of this remarkably efficient pathway for HNC elimination from glycolonitrile significantly broadens the possibilities for any radical-radical mechanism proposed in our research to be considered as a feasible pathway for the formation of HNC in the ISM. This finding is particularly interesing given the persistently unexplained overabundance of hydrogen isocyanide in the ISM. Among the radical-molecule reactions investigated, the most promising one is OH + CH2CHNH, which forms glycolonitrile and atomic hydrogen with rate coefficients in the range (0.3-6.6) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 within the 10-150 K temperature range. Our calculations indicate that the formation of both hydrogen isocyanide and glycolonitrile is efficient under the harsh conditions of the ISM.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of muscle mass and function, and thereafter, screening and diagnosis of sarcopenia, is a challenge and a need in hospitalized older adults. However, it is difficult in complex real-world old patients, because usually they are unable to collaborate with clinical, functional, and imaging testing. Ultrasound measurement of quadriceps rectus femoris (QRF) provides a non-invasive, real-time assessment of muscle quantity and quality, and is highly acceptable to participants with excellent inter-rater and intra-rater variability. However, normative data, protocol standardization, and association with longitudinal outcomes, needs further research and consensus. METHODS: Prospective exploratory multicenter study in older adults admitted to Acute Geriatric Units (AGUs) for medical reasons. 157 subjects from 7 AGUs of Spain were recruited between May 2019 and January 2022. Muscle ultrasound measurements of the anterior vastus of the QRF were acquired on admission and on discharge, using a previously validated protocol, using a Chieson model ECO2 ultrasound system (Chieson Medical Technologies, Co. Ltd, Wimxu District Wuxi, Jiangsu, China). Measurements included the cross-sectional area, muscle thickness in longitudinal view, intramuscular central tendon thickness, echogenicity, and the presence or absence of edema and fasciculations. Functional, nutritional, and DXA measurements were provided. Clinical follow-up was completed at discharge, and 30 and 90 days after discharge. Variations between hospital admission and discharge ultrasound values, and the relationship with clinical variables, will be analyzed using paired t-tests, Wilcoxon tests, or Mc Nemar chi-square tests when necessary. Prevalence of sarcopenia will be calculated, as well as sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound measurements to determine sarcopenia. Kappa analysis will be used to analyze the concordance between measurements, and sensitivity analysis will be conducted for each participating center. DISCUSSION: The results obtained will be of great interest to the scientific geriatric community to assess the utility and validity of ultrasound measurements for the detection and follow-up of sarcopenia in hospitalized older adults, and its association with adverse outcomes. PURPOSE: Meibomian gland contrast has been suggested as a potential biomarker in Meibomian gland dysfunction. This study analysed the instrumental factors related to contrast. The objectives were to determine whether the mathematical equations used to compute gland contrast (e.g., Michelson or Yeh and Lin), impact the ability to identify abnormal individuals, to ascertain whether contrast between the gland and the background could be an effective biomarker and to assess whether using contrast-enhancement on the gland image improves its diagnostic efficacy. METHODS: A total of 240 meibography images from 40 participants (20 controls and 20 having Meibomian gland dysfunction or blepharitis), were included. The Oculus Keratograph 5M was used to capture images from the upper and lower eyelids of each eye. The contrast of unprocessed images and those pre-processed with contrast-enhancement algorithms were analysed. Contrast was measured on the eight central glands. Two equations for contrast computation were used, and the contrast both between glands and within a gland were calculated. RESULTS: Significant differences were found between the groups for inter-gland area in the upper (p = 0.01) and lower eyelids (p = 0.001) for contrast measured with the Michelson formula. Similar effects were observed when using the Yeh and Lin method in the upper (p = 0.01) and lower eyelids (p = 0.04). These results were obtained for images enhanced with the Keratograph 5M algorithm. CONCLUSIONS: Meibomian gland contrast is a useful biomarker of disease related to the Meibomian glands. Contrast measurement should be determined using contrast-enhanced images in the inter-gland area. However, the method used to compute contrast did not influence the results.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the care of patients with other diseases. Difficulty in access to healthcare during these months has been especially relevant for persons with HIV infection (PWH). This study therefore sought to ascertain the clinical outcomes and effectiveness of the measures implemented among PWH in a region with one of the highest incidence rates in Europe. Methods: Retrospective, observational, pre-post intervention study to compare the outcomes of PWH attended at a high-complexity healthcare hospital from March to October 2020 and during the same months across the period 2016-2019. The intervention consisted of home drug deliveries and preferential use of non face-to-face consultations. The effectiveness of the measures implemented was determined by reference to the number of emergency visits, hospitalisations, mortality rate, and percentage of PWH with viral load >50 copies, before and after the two pandemic waves. Results: A total of 2760 PWH were attended from January 2016 to October 2020. During the pandemic, there was a monthly mean of 106.87 telephone consultations and 2075 home deliveries of medical drugs dispensed to ambulatory patients. No statistically significant differences were found between the rate of admission of patients with COVID-HIV co-infection and that of the remaining patients (1172.76 admissions/100,000 population vs. 1424.29, p = 0.401) or in mortality (11.54% vs. 12.96%, p = 0.939). The percentage of PWH with viral load >50 copies was similar before and after the pandemic (1.20% pre-pandemic vs. 0.51% in 2020, p = 0.078). Conclusion: Our results show that the strategies implemented during the first 8 months of the pandemic prevented any deterioration in the control and follow-up parameters routinely used on PWH. Furthermore, they contribute to the debate about how telemedicine and telepharmacy can fit into future healthcare models.


Introducción: La pandemia causada por el SARS-CoV-2 ha afectado a la atención de pacientes con otras enfermedades. La dificultad en el acceso a la asistencia sanitaria durante estos meses es especialmente relevante en las personas con infección por VIH (PCV). El objetivo del estudio fue conocer los resultados clínicos y la efectividad de las medidas implementadas en PCV en una de las regiones con mayor incidencia de Europa. Métodos: Estudio observacional retrospectivo, pre-postintervención, comparando los resultados de PCV atendidos en un hospital de alta complejidad entre marzo-octubre de 2020 y el mismo periodo de 2016 a 2019. La intervención consistió en el envío a domicilio de medicamentos y la realización preferente de consultas no presenciales. La efectividad de las medidas implementadas se determinó por el número de visitas a urgencias, hospitalizaciones, mortalidad y porcentaje de PCV con carga viral > 50 copias antes y después de 2 olas pandémicas. Resultados: Se atendieron 2.760 PCV entre enero de 2016 y octubre de 2020. Durante la pandemia se realizaron una media mensual de 106,87 consultas telefónicas y 2.075 envíos a domicilio de medicamentos de dispensación ambulatoria. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la frecuentación de pacientes con coinfección COVID-VIH respecto al resto (1.172,76 ingresos/100.000 habitantes vs. 1.424,29, p = 0,401), ni en su mortalidad (11,54 vs. 12,96%, p = 0,939). El porcentaje de PCV con carga viral > 50 copias fue similar antes y después de la pandemia (1,20% prepandemia vs. 0,51% en 2020, p = 0,078). Conclusión: Nuestros resultados revelan que las estrategias implementadas durante los 8 primeros meses de pandemia han evitado el deterioro en parámetros de control y seguimiento empleados habitualmente en PCV. Además, contribuyen a la reflexión sobre el encaje de la telemedicina y telefarmacia en modelos asistenciales futuros.

Ultrasound imaging (US) is a biosensing technique that is widely used in several healthcare disciplines (including physiotherapy) for assessing multiple muscle metrics, such as muscle morphology and quality. Since all biosensors need to be tested in order to demonstrate their reliability, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, identifying factors that affect their diagnostic accuracy is essential. Since previous studies analyzed the impact of sociodemographic but not body composition characteristics in US errors, this study aimed to assess whether body composition metrics are associated with ultrasound measurement errors. B-mode images of the lumbar multifidus muscle at the L5 level were acquired and analyzed in 47 healthy volunteers by two examiners (one experienced and one novice). The cross-sectional area, muscle perimeter, and mean echo intensity were calculated bilaterally. A correlation analysis and a multivariate linear regression model were used for assessing the inter-examiner differences with respect to body composition metrics. The results demonstrated good-to-excellent reliability estimates for the cross-sectional area, muscle perimeter, aspect ratio, roundness, circularity, and mean brightness metrics (all ICC > 0.85). However, solidity showed unacceptable reliability (ICC < 0.7). Age, height, total lean mass, trunk lean mass, and water volume were associated with inter-examiner disagreement on mean echo intensity. Cross-sectional area, perimeter, and roundness measurement errors were associated with lean mass and water volume.

The rodent hippocampus generates new neurons throughout life. This process, named adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN), is a striking form of neural plasticity that occurs in the brains of numerous mammalian species. Direct evidence of adult neurogenesis in humans has remained elusive, although the occurrence of this phenomenon in the human dentate gyrus has been demonstrated in seminal studies and recent research that have applied distinct approaches to birthdate newly generated neurons and to validate markers of adult-born neurons. Our data point to the persistence of AHN until the 10th decade of human life, as well as to marked impairments in this process in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Moreover, our work demonstrates that the methods used to process and analyze postmortem human brain samples can limit the detection of various markers of AHN to the point of making them undetectable. In this Dual Perspectives article, we highlight the critical methodological aspects that should be strictly controlled in human studies and the robust evidence that supports the occurrence of AHN in humans. We also put forward reasons that may account for current discrepancies on this topic. Finally, the unresolved questions and future challenges awaiting the field are highlighted.

RESUMO

As a result of a high-throughput compound screening campaign using Mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected macrophages, a new drug candidate for the treatment of tuberculosis has been identified. GSK2556286 inhibits growth within human macrophages (50% inhibitory concentration [IC50] = 0.07 µM), is active against extracellular bacteria in cholesterol-containing culture medium, and exhibits no cross-resistance with known antitubercular drugs. In addition, it has shown efficacy in different mouse models of tuberculosis (TB) and has an adequate safety profile in two preclinical species. These features indicate a compound with a novel mode of action, although still not fully defined, that is effective against both multidrug-resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and drug-sensitive (DS) M. tuberculosis with the potential to shorten the duration of treatment in novel combination drug regimens. Hydrofluoroethers (HFEs), such as CF3CH2OCH3 (HFE-263fb2), CHF2CF2CH2OCH3 (HFE-374pcf), and CF3CF2CH2OCH3 (HFE-365mcf3), have been proposed in the last few decades as the third-generation replacements for perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) because of their zero stratospheric ozone depletion potentials and relatively low global warming potentials (GWPs). These GWPs depend on the radiative efficiency (RE) and the atmospheric lifetime (τOH) of HFEs due to the reaction with hydroxyl (OH) radicals. The temperature and pressure dependencies of the OH-rate coefficient (kOH(T)) for HFE-263fb2, HFE-374pcf, and HFE-365mcf3 are not known. Therefore, in this paper, we present the first study on the temperature (263-353 K) and pressure (50-500 torr of helium) dependence of kOH(T) for the titled HFEs. No pressure dependence of kOH(T) was observed in the investigated range. From kOH(298 K), estimated τOH are 17 days (for HFE-263fb2), 12 days (for HFE-374pcf), and 13 days (for HFE-365mcf3). The observed T-dependencies of kOH(T) (in cm3 molecule-1 s-1) are well described by (3.88 ± 0.89) × 10-12 exp[-(508 ± 69)/T] for HFE-263fb2, (2.81 ± 0.33) × 10-12 exp[-(312 ± 35)/T] for HFE-374pcf, and (2.60 ± 0.31) × 10-12 exp[-(319 ± 35)/T] for HFE-365mcf3. A correlation between log kOH(298 K) and the activation energy (Ea) of the process is presented, allowing the prediction of Ea for OH-reactions with other HFEs, exclusively investigated at room temperature. In addition to the kinetic measurements, the infrared absorption cross sections of HFE-263fb2, HFE-374pcf, and HFE-365mcf3 were determined between 520 and 3100 cm-1. Lifetime corrected REs and GWPs relative to CO2 at 100 years' time horizon were reexamined. The impact of the investigated HFEs on the radiative forcing of climate change would be negligible.

Nitrogen-bearing molecules, like methylamine (CH3NH2), can be the building blocks of amino acids in the interstellar medium (ISM). At the ultralow temperatures of the ISM, it is important to know its gas-phase reactivity towards interstellar radicals and the products formed. In this work, the kinetics of the OH + CH3NH2 reaction was experimentally and theoretically investigated at low- and high-pressure limits (LPL and HPL) between 10 and 1000 K. Moreover, the CH2NH2 and CH3NH yields were computed in the same temperature range for both pressure regimes. A pulsed CRESU (French acronym for Reaction Kinetics in a Uniform Supersonic Flow) apparatus was employed to determine the rate coefficient, k(T), in the 11.7-177.5 K range. A drastic increase of k(T) when the temperature is lowered was observed in agreement with theoretical calculations, evaluated by the competitive canonical unified statistical (CCUS) theory, below 300 K in the LPL regime. The same trend was observed in the HPL regime below 350 K, but the theoretical k(T) values were higher than the experimental ones. Above 200 K, the calculated rate coefficients are improved with respect to previous computational studies and are in excellent agreement with the experimental literature data. In the LPL, the formation of CH3NH becomes largely dominant below ca. 100 K. Conversely, in the HPL regime, CH2NH2 is the only product below 100 K, whereas CH3NH becomes dominant at 298 K with a branching ratio similar to the one found in the LPL regime (≈70%). At T > 300 K, both reaction channels are competitive independently of the pressure regime.

The gas-phase reaction between trans-2-hexenal (T2H) and chlorine atoms (Cl) was studied using three complementary experimental setups at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. In this work, we studied the rate constant for the titled oxidation reaction as well as the formation of the gas-phase products and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). The rate constant of the T2H + Cl reaction was determined using the relative method in a simulation chamber using proton-transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) to monitor the loss of T2H and the reference compound. An average reaction rate constant of (3.17 ± 0.72) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 was obtained. From this, the atmospheric lifetime of T2H due to Cl reaction was estimated to be 9 h for coastal regions. HCl, CO, and butanal were identified as primary products using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The molar yield of butanal was (6.4 ± 0.3)%. Formic acid was identified as a secondary product by FTIR. In addition, butanal, 2-chlorohexenal, and 2-hexenoic acid were identified as products by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry but not quantified. A reaction mechanism is proposed based on the observed products. SOA formation was observed by using a fast mobility particle sizer spectrometer. The measured SOA yields reached maximum values of about 38% at high particle mass concentrations. This work exhibits for the first time that T2H can be a source of SOA in coastal atmospheres, where Cl concentrations can be high at dawn, or in industrial areas, such as ceramic industries, where Cl precursors may be present.

BACKGROUND: This study compares the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections caused by Alpha, Delta or Omicron variants in periods of co-circulation in Spain, and estimates the variant-specific association of vaccination with severe disease. METHODS: SARS-CoV-2 infections notified to the national epidemiological surveillance network with information on genetic variant and vaccination status were considered cases if they required hospitalisation or controls otherwise. Alpha and Delta were compared during June-July 2021; and Delta and Omicron during December 2021-January 2022. Adjusted Odds Ratios (aOR) were estimated using logistic regression, comparing variant and vaccination status between cases and controls. RESULTS: We included 5,345 Alpha and 11,974 Delta infections in June-July and, 5,272 Delta and 10,578 Omicron in December-January. Unvaccinated cases of Alpha (aOR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.46-0.69) or Omicron (0.28; 0.21-0.36) had lower probability of hospitalisation vs. Delta. Complete vaccination reduced hospitalisation, similarly for Alpha (0.16; 0.13-0.21) and Delta (June-July: 0.16; 0.14-0.19; December-January: 0.36; 0.30-0.44) but lower from Omicron (0.63; 0.53-0.75) and individuals aged 65+ years. CONCLUSION: Results indicate higher intrinsic severity of the Delta variant, compared with Alpha or Omicron, with smaller differences among vaccinated individuals. Nevertheless, vaccination was associated to reduced hospitalisation in all groups.

Despite the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2, Spanish educational centers were reopened after six months of lockdown. Ventilation was mostly adopted as a preventive measure to reduce the transmission risk of the virus. However, it could also affect indoor air quality (IAQ). Therefore, here we evaluate the ventilation conditions, COVID-19 risk, and IAQ in secondary school and university classrooms in Toledo (central Spain) from November 2020 to June 2021. Ventilation was examined by monitoring outdoor and indoor CO2 levels. CO2, occupancy and hygrothermal parameters, allowed estimating the relative transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 (Alpha and Omicron BA.1), H r, under different scenarios, using the web app COVID Risk airborne . Additionally, the effect of ventilation on IAQ was evaluated by measuring indoor/outdoor (I/O) concentration ratios of O3, NO2, and suspended particulate matter (PM). University classrooms, particularly the mechanically ventilated one, presented better ventilation conditions than the secondary school classrooms, as well as better thermal comfort conditions. The estimated H r for COVID-19 ranged from intermediate (with surgical masks) to high (no masks, teacher infected). IAQ was generally good in all classrooms, particularly at the university ones, with I/O below unity, implying an outdoor origin of gaseous pollutants, while the source of PM was heterogeneous. Consequently, controlled mechanical ventilation systems are essential in educational spaces, as well as wearing well-fitting FFP2-N95 masks indoors is also highly recommended to minimize the transmission risk of COVID-19 and other airborne infectious diseases.
