RESUMO

Mechanochemical reactions can be induced in a solution by the collision of balls to produce high-temperature and high-pressure zones, with the reactions occurring through a dissolution-precipitation mechanism due to a change in solubility. However, only a fraction of the impact energy contributes to the mechanochemical reactions, while the rest is mainly consumed by the wear of balls and the heat generation. To clarify whether the normal or tangential component of collisions makes a larger contribution on the reaction, herein we studied the effect of collision direction on a wet mechanochemical reaction through combined analysis of the experimental reaction rates and simulated ball motion. Collisions of balls in the normal direction were found to contribute strongly to the wet mechanochemical reaction. These results could be used to improve the synthesis efficiency, predict the reaction, and lower the wear in the wet mechanochemical reactions.

RESUMO

We have developed a novel process for recovering metals from alloy-wastes by using a mechanochemical (MC) reaction. The process consists of co-grinding both alloy and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) samples, followed by washing with water and filtration. The co-grinding of the wastes causes a solid-state MC reaction to form metal chlorides and hydrocarbon in the product. The former products are soluble in water, so they can be recovered from the wastes by washing with water, followed by filtration. The PVC waste plays a significant role as a chlorine source in the MC reaction. After filtration, the solid residue can be used as a fuel, due to the absence of chlorine in the product, and the filtrate is subjected to hydrometallurgical process to extract metals from the solution.

RESUMO

A new process to produce hydrogen efficiently from sewage sludge (SWS) was developed with co-grinding operation of the dried SWS with calcium and nickel hydroxides (Ca(OH)2 and Ni(OH)2) and subsequent heating of the ground mixture at relatively low temperature below 600°C. A set of analytical methods were used to characterize the ground samples before heating and the gaseous and solid products after heating. Thermo-mass spectroscopic (TG-MS) analysis showed hydrogen occurrence around 450°C. Hydrogen yield over 70g per kg SWS with concentration of 93.6% was obtained with the hydroxide additions of Ca to C from SWS at 1:1 and Ni to C at 1:6, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the solid residues after heating confirmed the existences of calcium carbonate and nickel metal. Based on the obtained results, possible reaction pathway was proposed.

RESUMO

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was ground in air with CaO in the presence of quartz powder as a grinding aid by a small-scale planetary ball mill to investigate the relation of the dechlorination rate of PVC with the impact energy of the balls calculated from a computer simulation based on the Discrete Element Method under various conditions. Mechanochemical dechlorination proceeds as the grinding progresses and is improved with an increase in both the mill speed and the amount of balls introduced into the mill. The same trend can be seen in the relation between the specific normal impact energy of the balls and the rotational speed. The relationship between the observed dechlorination rate and the computed normal impact energy of the balls is linear, with a correlation coefficient of 0.965. This relationship can be used to estimate the dechlorination rate of PVC in a large-scale planetary ball mill.
