RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Influence of early atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation, particularly cryoballoon ablation (CBA), on clinical outcome during long-term follow-up has not been clarified. The objective was to determine whether an early CBA (diagnosis-to-ablation of ≤6 months) strategy could affect freedom from AF recurrence after index CBA. METHODS: The study included 2605 patients from Korean CBA registry data with follow-up >12 months after de novo CBA. The primary outcome was recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmias (ATs) of ≥30-s after a 3-month blanking period. RESULTS: Compared to patients in early CBA group, patients in late CBA group had higher prevalence of diabetes, congestive heart failure, and chronic kidney disease, and higher mean CHA2 DS2 -VAS score. During mean follow-up of >21 months, ATs recurrence was detected in 839 (32.2%) patients. The early CBA group showed a significantly lower 2-year recurrence rate of ATs than the late CBA group (26.1% vs. 31.7%, p = 0.043). In subgroup analysis, the early CBA group showed significantly higher 1-year and 2-year freedom from ATs recurrence than the late CBA group only in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) patients in overall and propensity score matched cohorts. Multivariate analysis showed that early CBA was an independent factor for preventing ATs recurrence in PAF (hazard ratio: 0.637; 95% confidence intervals: 0.412-0.984). CONCLUSION: Early CBA strategy, resulting in significantly lower ATs recurrence during 2-year follow-up after index CBA, might be considered as an initial rhythm control therapy in patients with paroxysmal AF.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The impact of early recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmia (ERAT) within the 90-day blanking period on long-term outcomes in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients undergoing cryoballoon ablation (CBA) is controversial. This study aimed to assess the relationship between ERAT and late recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmia (LRAT) post-CBA. METHODS: Utilizing data from a multicenter registry in Korea (May 2018 to June 2022), we analyzed the presence and timing of ERAT (<30, 30-60, and 60-90 days) and its association with LRAT risk after CBA. LRAT was defined as any recurrence of AF, atrial flutter, or atrial tachycardia lasting more than 30 s beyond the 90 days. RESULTS: Out of 2636 patients, 745 (28.2%) experienced ERAT post-CBA. Over an average follow-up period of 21.2 ± 10.3 months, LRAT was observed in 874 (33.1%) patients. Patients with ERAT had significantly lower 1-year LRAT freedom compared to those without ERAT (42.6% vs. 85.5%, p < .001). Multivariate analysis identified ERAT as a potential predictor of LRAT, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 3.98 (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.47-4.57). Significant associations were noted across all examined time frames (HR, 3.84; 95% CI, 3.32-4.45 in <30 days, HR, 5.53; 95% CI, 4.13-7.42 in 30-60 days, and HR, 4.29; 95% CI, 3.12-5.89 in 60-90 days). This finding was consistently observed across all types of AF. CONCLUSION: ERAT during the 90-day blanking period strongly predicts LRAT in AF patients undergoing CBA, indicating a need to reconsider the clinical significance of this period.

RESUMO

AIMS: Pulmonary vein isolation using cryoablation is effective and safe in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Although both obesity and underweight are associated with a higher risk for incident AF, there is limited data on the efficacy and safety following cryoablation according to body mass index (BMI) especially in Asians. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using the Korean Heart Rhythm Society Cryoablation registry, a multicentre registry of 12 tertiary hospitals, we analysed AF recurrence and procedure-related complications after cryoablation by BMI (kg/m2) groups (BMI < 18.5, underweight, UW; 18.5-23, normal, NW; 23-25, overweight, OW; 25-30, obese Ⅰ, OⅠ; ≥30, obese Ⅱ, OⅡ). A total of 2648 patients were included (median age 62.0 years; 76.7% men; 55.6% non-paroxysmal AF). Patients were categorized by BMI groups: 0.9% UW, 18.7% NW, 24.8% OW, 46.1% OI, and 9.4% OII. Underweight patients were the oldest and had least percentage of non-paroxysmal AF (33.3%). During a median follow-up of 1.7 years, atrial arrhythmia recurred in 874 (33.0%) patients (incidence rate, 18.9 per 100 person-years). After multivariable adjustment, the risk of AF recurrence was higher in UW group compared with NW group (adjusted hazard ratio, 95% confidence interval; 2.55, 1.18-5.50, P = 0.02). Procedure-related complications occurred in 123 (4.7%) patients, and the risk was higher for UW patients (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval; 2.90, 0.94-8.99, P = 0.07), mainly due to transient phrenic nerve palsy. CONCLUSION: Underweight patients showed a higher risk of AF recurrence after cryoablation compared with NW patients. Also, careful attention is needed on the occurrence of phrenic nerve palsy in UW patients.

RESUMO

AIMS: Idiopathic ventricular fibrillation (IVF) is a disease in which the cause of ventricular fibrillation cannot be identified despite comprehensive clinical evaluation. This study aimed to investigate the clinical yield and implications of genetic testing for IVF. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study was based on the multi-centre inherited arrhythmia syndrome registry in South Korea from 2014 to 2017. Next-generation sequencing-based genetic testing was performed that included 174 genes previously linked to cardiovascular disease. A total of 96 patients were clinically diagnosed with IVF. The mean age of the onset was 41.2 ± 12.7 years, and 79 patients were males (82.3%). Of these, 74 underwent genetic testing and four (5.4%) of the IVF probands had pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants (each having one of MYBPC3, MYH7, DSP, and TNNI3). All pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants were located in genes with definite evidence of a cardiomyopathy phenotype, either hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. CONCLUSION: Next-generation sequencing-based genetic testing identified pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in 5.4% of patients initially diagnosed with IVF, suggesting that genetic testing with definite evidence genes of cardiomyopathy may enable molecular diagnosis in a minority of patients with IVF. Further clinical evaluation and follow-up of patients with IVF with positive genotypes are needed to unveil concealed phenotypes, such as the pre-clinical phase of cardiomyopathy.

RESUMO

Using nationally representative income and expenditure data from South Korea, we show that single-person households suffered a much greater decrease in household income and expenditure compared to multi-persons households during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Negative effects on income were largest for the single-person households in ages 50-64, mostly driven by decreases in earned income rather than business income. There was no corresponding decrease in consumption expenditures, however, other than on transportation expenditure for young men. Notably, there were significant decreases in non-consumption expenditures that are related to formal and informal consumption-smoothing mechanisms, such as spending on insurances, pensions, and household transfers. Our findings highlight the disproportionately negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the middle-aged single-person households. With reduced spending on consumption-smoothing mechanisms, this group is likely to be even more vulnerable to negative income shocks in the future.

RESUMO

Atopic dermatitis is a typical chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects all age groups and requires basic skin care for treatment. Anti-inflammatory and antiallergy steroids are the most frequently used treatments but they are limited due to their side effects caused by a weakening of the immune system. Many consumers focus on performance as a criterion for selecting cosmetics. However, steroids have been illegally used to improve the performance of cosmetics, and consumers have been adversely affected by the corresponding side effects. In this paper, we propose a simple and rapid method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to simultaneously analyze ten non-permitted atopic therapeutic compounds in cosmetic products: chlorpheniramine maleate, ketotifen fumarate, doxepin hydrochloride, azelastine hydrochloride, bufexamac, clotrimazole, tranilast, fusidic acid, tacrolimus, and pimecrolimus. Additionally, the major characteristic fragment ions for tacrolimus, pimecrolimus, and clotrimazole were identified by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The specificity, linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, recovery, precision, accuracy, and stability of the proposed method were validated. The limit of detection and quantification were in the ranges of 5.05-203.30 pg/mL and 15.15-609.90 pg/mL, respectively. The proposed analysis method could help improve the safety management of cosmetics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite the known association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), whether NAFLD predicts future CVD events, especially CVD mortality, remains uncertain. We evaluated the relationship between fatty liver index (FLI), a validated marker of NAFLD, and risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) in a large population-based study. METHODS: We identified 3011,588 subjects in the Korean National Health Insurance System cohort without a history of CVD who underwent health examinations from 2009 to 2011. The primary endpoint was a composite of cardiovascular deaths, non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), and ischemic stroke. A Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was performed to assess association between the FLI and the primary endpoint. RESULTS: During the median follow-up period of 6 years, there were 46,010 cases of MACEs (7148 cases of cardiovascular death, 16,574 of non-fatal MI, and 22,288 of ischemic stroke). There was a linear association between higher FLI values and higher incidence of the primary endpoint. In the multivariable models adjusted for factors, such as body weight and cholesterol levels, the hazard ratio for the primary endpoint comparing the highest vs. lowest quartiles of the FLI was 1.99 (95% confidence interval [CIs], 1.91-2.07). The corresponding hazard ratios (95% CIs) for cardiovascular death, non-fetal MI, and ischemic stroke were 1.98 (1.9-2.06), 2.16 (2.01-2.31), and 2.01 (1.90-2.13), respectively (p < 0.001). The results were similar when we performed stratified analyses by age, sex, use of dyslipidemia medication, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the FLI, which is a surrogate marker of NAFLD, has prognostic value for detecting individuals at higher risk for cardiovascular events.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) has a survival benefit for the prevention of sudden cardiac death, ICD recipients commonly experience emotional distress as a consequence of ICD shocks. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether the association between ICD shocks and psychological distress (anxiety and depressive symptoms) is mediated by ICD-related concerns and perceived control among ICD recipients. METHODS: This was a multinational cross-sectional observational study of 334 ICD recipients. Patients reported the number of shocks received since ICD implantation and completed questionnaires to assess anxiety, depressive symptoms, ICD-related concerns, and perceived control. A path analysis was conducted to explore the relationship of receiving ICD shocks with anxiety and depressive symptoms and the mediating effects of ICD-related concerns and perceived control. RESULTS: Of the 334 ICD recipients, 39.2% experienced ICD shocks at least once since implantation. There was no direct effect of ICD shocks on anxiety and depressive symptoms. Experiencing ICD shocks was indirectly associated with an increased likelihood of anxiety and depressive symptoms via the pathways of ICD-related concerns and perceived control (indirect effects on anxiety = 0.060, 0.043; indirect effect on depressive symptoms = 0.025, 0.073). CONCLUSION: Experiencing defibrillator shocks was associated with psychological distress in ICD recipients; the relationship was fully mediated by ICD-related concerns and perceived control. These results suggest that clinicians should routinely assess ICD-related concerns and perceived control in patients with ICD. Research is needed to develop and test interventions to decrease emotional distress related to the ICD shock experience.

RESUMO

Auricular cartilage reconstruction represents one of the greatest challenges for otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The native structure and composition of the auricular cartilage can be achieved by combining a suitable chondrogenic cell source with an appropriate scaffold. In reconstructive surgery for cartilage tissue, autogenous cartilage is considered to be the best chondrogenic cell source. Polycaprolactone is mainly used as a tissue-engineered scaffold owing to its mechanical properties, miscibility with a large range of other polymers, and biodegradability. In this study, scaffolds with or without autogenous minced auricular cartilage were implanted bilaterally in rabbits for auricular regeneration. Six weeks (n = 4) and 16 weeks (n = 4) after implantation, real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and histology were used to assess the regeneration of the auricular cartilage. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the messenger RNA expression of aggrecan, collagen I, and collagen II was higher in scaffolds with 50% minced cartilage than the scaffold-only groups or scaffolds with 30% minced cartilage (P < 0.05). Furthermore, histological analysis demonstrated significantly superior cartilage regeneration in scaffolds with the minced cartilage group compared with the scaffold-only and control groups (P < 0.05). Autogenous cartilage can be easily obtained and loaded onto a scaffold to promote the presence of chondrogenic cells, allowing for an improvement of the reconstruction of auricular cartilage. Here, the regeneration of auricular cartilage was also successful in the 50% minced cartilage group. The results presented in this study could have clinical implications, as they demonstrate the potential of a 1-stage process for auricular reconstruction.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although cardiac manifestation of Behçet disease (BD) has been described in sporadic reports, its timely diagnosis remains difficult. The objective of this study was to describe early cardiac manifestations of BD. We also performed a comprehensive classification of systemic BD activity and compared their cardiac manifestations. METHODS: A prospective screening using speckle tracking echocardiography was performed in 85 patients with BD who had no history of heart disease. After excluding subjects with left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF) <50% (n = 1), atrial fibrillation (n = 2), or inadequate echocardiographic images (n = 1), we analyzed their clinical and echocardiographic parameters including LV global longitudinal strains (GLS) and compared them with those of an age- and gender-matched control group (n = 145). Systemic BD activity was classified as minimal (Group A), controlled (Group B), and active (Group C). RESULTS: In 81 study patients (59 females, age of 51 ± 11 years), echocardiography revealed a mean LVEF of 64 ± 5% without any significant valvular dysfunction or aortic aneurysm. Although there was no difference in LVEF between the control group and the patient group, the patient group showed significant reduction in GLS (-17.1 ± 2.9% vs -20.8 ± 2.2%, P < .001). Groups A (n = 21, 26%), B (n = 47, 58%), and C (n = 13, 58%) consistently showed reduction in GLS compared with the control group. However, there was no significant difference in cardiac manifestations among these groups according to systemic disease activity. CONCLUSION: Patients with BD present intrinsic LV dysfunction despite no apparent abnormality on routine echocardiography. However, their cardiac manifestations are not proportional to systemic BD activity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vitamin K antagonist (VKA) to prevent thromboembolism in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients has limitations such as drug interaction. This study investigated the clinical characteristics of Korean patients treated with VKA for stroke prevention and assessed quality of VKA therapy and treatment satisfaction. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, prospective, non-interventional study. Patients with CHADS2 ≥ 1 and treated with VKA (started within the last 3 months) were enrolled from April 2013 to March 2014. Demographic and clinical features including risk factors of stroke and VKA treatment information was collected at baseline. Treatment patterns and international normalized ratio (INR) level were evaluated during follow-up. Time in therapeutic range (TTR) > 60% indicated well-controlled INR. Treatment satisfaction on the VKA use was measured by Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication (TSQM) after 3 months of follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 877 patients (age, 67; male, 60%) were enrolled and followed up for one year. More than half of patients (56%) had CHADS2 ≥ 2 and 83.6% had CHA2DS2-VASc ≥ 2. A total of 852 patients had one or more INR measurement during their follow-up period. Among those patients, 25.5% discontinued VKA treatment during follow-up. Of all patients, 626 patients (73%) had poor-controlled INR (TTR < 60%) measure. Patients' treatment satisfaction measured with TSQM was 55.6 in global satisfaction domain. CONCLUSION: INR was poorly controlled in Korean NVAF patients treated with VKA. VKA users also showed low treatment satisfaction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is well-known for predicting the cardiovascular mortality and morbidity, its anticipated value is not demonstrated well concerning acute stroke. METHODS: Total 1557 patients with acute stroke who performed baPWV were enrolled. We evaluated the prognostic value of baPWV predicting all-cause death and vascular death in patients with acute stroke Results: Highest quartile of baPWV was ≥23.64 m/s. All-caused deaths (including vascular death; 71) were 109 patients during follow-up periods (median 905 days). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that patients with the highest quartile of baPWV had higher risk for vascular death when they are compared with patients with all other three quartiles of baPWV (Hazard ratio with 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.879 [1.022-3.456], p = .042 for vascular death). CONCLUSION: High baPWV was a strong prognostic value of vascular death in patients with acute stroke.

RESUMO

Obesity and metabolic syndrome is a worldwide pandemic and associated with high cardiovascular risk. Metabolic endotoxemia (ME) is thought to be an underlying molecular mechanism. It triggers toll-like receptor 4-mediated inflammatory adipokines and causes a chronic low grade inflammatory status, which results in cardiovascular risk increase. Exercise is the best nonpharmacological treatment to improve prognosis. In this study, we examined the circulating endotoxin level in Korean obese women and investigated effects of exercise on it. Women over body mass index (BMI) 25 kg/m² participated in a resistance training exercise, Curves. At baseline and after 12 weeks exercise, tests including blood samples were taken. In Korean obese women, the fasting endotoxin was 1.45 ± 0.11 EU/mL. Ingestion of a high calorie meal led to a peak level after 2 hours (postprandial 2 hours [PP2]) and a significant rise over the 4 hours (postprandial 4 hours [PP4]) in it (1.78 ± 0.15 and 1.75 ± 0.14 EU/mL for PP2 and PP4, P < 0.05 vs. fasting). After exercise, BMI and hip circumference were reduced significantly. The total cholesterol (TC) at fasting, PP2 and PP4 were decreased significantly. All levels of circulating endotoxin at fasting, PP2 and PP4 showed reduction. But, the peak change was only significant (baseline vs. 12 weeks for PP2; 1.78 ± 0.15 vs. 1.48 ± 0.06 EU/mL, P < 0.05). We report the circulating endotoxin level in Korean obese women for the first time. Also, we establish that energy intake leads to endotoxemia and exercise suppresses the peak endotoxemia after meal. It suggests an impact for a better prognosis in obese women who follow regular exercise.

RESUMO

High-mobility group box protein-1 (HMGB-1) plays a central role in the inflammatory network, and uncontrolled chronic inflammation can lead to excessive scarring. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) on scar formation. Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 30) underwent dorsal excision of the skin, followed by skin repair. PDRN (8 mg/kg) was administered via intraperitoneal injection for three (PDRN-3 group, n = 8) or seven (PDRN-7 group, n = 8) days, and HMGB-1 was administered via intradermal injection in addition to PDRN treatment for three days (PDRN-3+HMGB-1 group; n = 6). The scar-reducing effects of PDRN were evaluated in the internal scar area and by inflammatory cell counts using histology and immunohistochemistry. Western blot, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence assays were performed to observe changes in type I and type III collagen and the expression of HMGB-1 and CD45. Treatment with PDRN significantly reduced the scar area, inflammatory cell infiltration and the number of CD45-positive cells. In addition, the increased expression of HMGB-1 observed in the sham group was significantly reduced after treatment with PDRN. Rats administered HMGB-1 in addition to PDRN exhibited scar areas with inflammatory cell infiltration similar to the sham group, and the collagen synthesis effects of PDRN were reversed. In summary, PDRN exerts anti-inflammatory and collagen synthesis effects via HMGB-1 suppression, preventing scar formation. Thus, we believe that the anti-inflammatory and collagen synthesis effects of PDRN resulted in faster wound healing and decreased scar formation.

RESUMO

Severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is an often lethal complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The safety of clinical-grade mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has been validated, but mixed results have been obtained due to heterogeneity of the MSCs. In this phase I study, the safety of bone marrow-derived homogeneous clonal MSCs (cMSCs) isolated by a new subfractionation culturing method was evaluated. cMSCs were produced in a GMP facility and intravenously administered to patients who had refractory GVHD to standard treatment resulting after allogeneic HSCT for hematologic malignancies. After administration of a single dose (1×10(6) cells/kg), 11 patients were evaluated for cMSC treatment safety and efficacy. During the trial, nine patients had 85 total adverse events and the rate of serious adverse events was 27.3% (3/11 patients). The only one adverse drug reaction related to cMSC administration was grade 2 myalgia in one patient. Treatment response was observed in four patients: one with acute GVHD (partial response) and three with chronic GVHD. The other chronic patients maintained stable disease during the observation period. This study demonstrates single cMSC infusion to have an acceptable safety profile and promising efficacy, suggesting that we can proceed with the next stage of the clinical trial.

RESUMO

Accurate evaluation of the degree of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD) is crucial, as liver fibrosis is important in determining the prognosis of liver diseases. Currently, liver biopsy (LB) is considered the gold standard for staging liver fibrosis or cirrhosis. However, utilization of LB in clinical practice is often limited because of its invasive nature, sampling error and interobserver variability. Recently, transient elastography (TE) was introduced as a noninvasive, highly reproducible technique for assessing the degree of liver fibrosis. After extensive studies, TE is now regarded as a reliable surrogate marker for grading the severity of liver fibrosis in patients with CLD. In the past few years, the role of TE in monitoring liver stiffness and determining prognosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) or chronic hepatitis C (CHC) who are undergoing antiviral treatment has been investigated. In patients with CHB, liver stiffness values decrease with antiviral treatment. TE can also be used to predict the incidence of liver-related events during antiviral treatment. In patients with CHC, TE can be used to monitor potential regression of liver fibrosis after antiviral treatment and may predict the treatment outcome of CHC. In addition, TE is an adjunct tool for distinguishing inactive hepatitis B virus carriers from patients with chronic active hepatitis. This review article discusses the important findings from recent studies focusing on the clinical application of TE in patients with chronic viral hepatitis who are undergoing antiviral treatments.

RESUMO

Purpose : The visible Z-shaped upper lip scar that occurs after the Tennison and Randall triangular flap technique remains a cleft stigma. Herein, we present our curvilinear transformation technique for the Z-shaped upper lip scar by diamond-shaped excision and evaluate the results using photogrammetric analyses. Patients and Methods : From 1997 to 2006, 23 patients with secondary cleft lip deformity with the visible Z-shaped upper lip scar underwent correction with the technique. The scar was excised in the diamond shape above the muscle. After curvilinear closure, the elongated length of the upper lip was excised just below the nostril sill, as the measured Cupid's bow height discrepancy. The result was assessed by the authors' standardized photogrammetry technique. Results : There was a statistically significant decrease between the preoperative central limb of the Z-shaped scar and the width of the postoperative curvilinear upper lip scar. The pre- and postoperative Cupid's bow height differences were not statistically significant. Conclusions : The curvilinear transformation of the Z-shaped scar is an efficient procedure that provides (1) a significant decrease in the width of an upper lip scar to make it less conspicuous, (2) incorporation of the scar into the philtral column, (3) a biconcave natural philtral column shape in frontal view, and (4) formation of the natural concave philtral contour in profile view.

RESUMO

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is usually associated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower extremities. However, foreign bodies in the pulmonary arteries can rarely cause PE without evidence of DVT. In this report, we present a case of diffuse PE associated with a migrated thread-like structure of the right-side heart and pulmonary arteries in a 70 year-old woman. The patient underwent several episodes of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) to treat compression fractures. The thread-like foreign bodies were identified as the bone cement injected during the previous PV procedures. We present this case study to emphasise that clinicians should consider the possibility of PE as a late complication, especially those with a history of PV.

RESUMO

Mouse bone marrow-derived clonal mesenchymal stem cells (mcMSCs), which were originated from a single cell by a subfractionation culturing method, are recognized as new paradigm for stem cell therapy featured with its homogenous cell population. Next to proven therapeutic effects against pancreatitis, in the current study we demonstrated that mcMSCs showed significant therapeutic effects in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced experimental colitis model supported with anti-inflammatory and restorative activities. mcMSCs significantly reduced the disease activity index (DAI) score, including weight loss, stool consistency, and intestinal bleeding and significantly increased survival rates. The pathological scores were also significantly improved with mcMSC. We have demonstrated that especial mucosal regeneration activity accompanied with significantly lowered level of apoptosis as beneficiary actions of mcMSCs in UC models. The levels of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-17 were all significantly concurrent with significantly repressed NF-κB activation compared to the control group and significantly decreased infiltrations of responsible macrophage and neutrophil. Conclusively, our findings provide the rationale that mcMSCs are applicable as a potential source of cell-based therapy in inflammatory bowel diseases, especially contributing either to prevent relapse or to accelerate healing as solution to unmet medical needs in IBD therapy.
