Silicon monoxide (SiO)-based materials have gained much attention as high-capacity lithium storage materials based on their high capacity and stable capacity retention. However, low initial Coulombic efficiency associated with the irreversible electrochemical reaction of the amorphous SiO2 phase in SiO inhibits the wide usage of SiO-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Magnesiation of SiO is one of the most promising solutions to improve the initial efficiency of SiO-based anode materials. Herein, we demonstrate that endothermic dehydrogenation-driven magnesiation of SiO employing MgH2 enhanced the initial Coulombic efficiency of 89.5% with much improved long-term cycle performance over 300 cycles compared to the homologue prepared by magnesiation of SiO with Mg and pristine SiO. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy with thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the endothermic dehydrogenation of MgH2 suppressed the sudden temperature rise during magnesiation of SiO, thereby inhibiting the coarsening of the active Si phase in the resulting Si/Mg2SiO4 nanocomposite.

Topical corticosteroids (TCs) are widely used to treat dermatological conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It can be a safe and effective treatment when used appropriately. However, misguided information and corticosteroid phobia appear to contribute to inadequate adherence to therapy, leading to unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. Therefore, community pharmacists (CPs) are in a prime position to inform patients about the appropriate use of medicine. The aim of this study was to examine how the knowledge and perceptions of CPs, as well as other factors, associate CPs' patient counseling practice around the use of TCs. A structured, validated questionnaire was distributed to CPs in the Republic of Korea, and additional focus group discussions were implemented to obtain a deeper understanding of the survey findings. We analyzed the survey results by applying a modified knowledge-perception-practice model. In addition, we used path analysis to validate the model and assessed how knowledge level and perceptions of barriers affect CPs' counseling behavior. We ran a multiple regression to identify factors that associate CPs' practice levels. A total of 1018 surveys were analyzed. In general, respondents had sufficient knowledge to provide appropriate patient counseling on TC use. An increase in knowledge level positively associated the quality of practice, and more knowledge increased the perception of barriers that negatively associated patient counseling. Location in rural areas and pharmacists' perception of counseling barriers negatively associated the quality of practice. A higher level of knowledge, training in ADEs, higher proportion of OTC TC sales, and increased time for counseling positively associated the quality of practice. Therefore, minimizing barriers such as negative perceptions is very important in facilitating CPs' counseling practice around TC use.

Acinetobacter strain KNF2022T was isolated from tobacco plant roots during the screening of antiviral substances having inhibitory effects on Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and examined by phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genetic characterization. It was a nonmotile, Gram-negative bacterium. This strain contained Q-9 as the main respiratory quinone. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were 16:0, 18:1 w9c, and 16:1 w7c/15 iso 2OH. The DNA base composition was 44 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA sequence revealed that the isolate formed an evolutionary lineage distinct from other Acinetobacter species. Based on the evaluation of morphologic, physiologic, and chemotaxonomic characteristics, DNA-DNA hybridization values, and 16S rRNA sequence comparison, we propose the new species Acinetobacter antiviralis sp. nov., the type strain of which is KNF2022T(=KCTC0699BPT).

A streptomycete strain producing broad-spectrum antifungal substances was taxonomically characterized. The strain, designated KNF 2047(T) (= SH-09(T) = KCTC 10586BP(T)), was found to form extensively branching aerial and substrate mycelia, and produce spiny-ornamented spores with loose spiral chains. The whole cell hydrolyzates contained major amount of LL-diaminopimelic acid. The major fatty acids of the phospholipids were saturated and branched fatty acids containing 14~17 carbons, and the major isoprenoid quinones were hexa-and octa-hydrogenated menaquinones with 9 isoprene units. The phylogenetic analysis using the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the strain belongs to the genus Streptomyces but forms an independent phyletic line. These results clearly demonstrate that strain KNF2047(T) forms a new center of taxonomic variation within Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces neopeptinius sp. nov. is proposed.

Efforts to control viral diseases in crop production include several types of physical or chemical treatments; antiviral extracts of a number of plants have also been examined to inhibit plant viral infection. However, treatments utilizing naturally selected microorganisms with activity against plant viruses are poorly documented. Here we report isolation of a soil inhabiting bacterium, Pseudomonas oleovorans strain KBPF-004 (developmental code KNF2016) which showed antiviral activity against mechanical transmission of tobamoviruses. Antiviral activity was also evaluated in seed transmission of two tobamoviruses, Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) and Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), by treatment of seed collected from infected pepper and watermelon, respectively. Pepper and watermelon seeds were treated with culture supernatant of P. oleovorans strain KBPF-004 or control strain ATCC 8062 before planting. Seeds germinated after treatment with water or ATCC 8062 yielded about 60% CGMMV or PMMoV positive plants, whereas < 20% of KBPF-004-treated seeds were virus-infected, a significantly reduced seed transmission rate. Furthermore, supernatant of P. oleovorans strain KBPF-004 remodeled aggregation of PMMoV 126 kDa protein and subcellular localization of movement protein in Nicotiana benthamiana, diminishing aggregation of the 126 kDa protein and essentially abolishing association of the movement protein with the microtubule network. In leaves agroinfiltrated with constructs expressing the coat protein (CP) of either PMMoV or CGMMV, less full-size CP was detected in the presence of supernatant of P. oleovorans strain KBPF-004. These changes may contribute to the antiviral effects of P. oleovorans strain KBPF-004.

In recent years, the worldwide use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has increased exponentially. PET wastewater contains ethylene glycol (EG) and terephthalic acid (TPA). In this study, we present a unique method for producing combustible gases like CH4 and H2 from PET wastewater by electrochemical reaction of EG and TPA. The non-diaphragm-based electrochemical (NDE) method was used to treat PET wastewater. The electrochemical removal of EG and TPA from PET wastewater was examined and the optimal conditions for their reduction to CH4 and H2 were determined. Using the proposed system, 99.9% of the EG and TPA present in the PET wastewater samples were degraded to produce CH4 and H2, at applied voltages lower than 5 V. The highest Faradaic efficiency achieved for EG and TPA reduction was 62.2% (CH4, 25.6%; H2, 36.6%), at an applied voltage of 0.8 V. Remarkably, CH4 was produced from EG decomposition and H2 from TPA decomposition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported instance of CH4 and H2 production from EG and TPA, respectively. The electrochemical reductive treatment will be an important discovery for reducing water contamination and replacing fossil fuels with respect to generating green energy.
