RESUMO

We previously reported that 5-[4-(4-fluorophenoxy) phenyl] methylene-3-{4-[3-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)propoxy]phenyl}-2-thioxo-4-thiazolidinone dihydrochloride (KSK05104) has potent, selective and metabolically stable IKKß inhibitory activities. However, the apoptosis-inducing of KSK05104 and its underlying mechanism have not yet been elucidated in human colon cancer cells. We show that KSK05104 triggered apoptosis, as indicated by externalization of Annexin V-targeted phosphatidylserine residues in HT-29 and HCT-116 cells. KSK05104 induced the activation of caspase-8, -9, and -3, and the cleavage of poly (ADP ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1). KSK05104-induced apoptosis was significantly suppressed by pretreatment with z-VAD-fmk (a broad caspase inhibitor). KSK05104 also induced release of cytochrome c (Cyt c), apoptosis inducing factor (AIF), and endonuclease G (Endo G) by damaging mitochondria, resulting in caspase-dependent and -independent apoptotic cell death. KSK05104 triggered endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and changed the intracellular calcium level ([Ca2+]i). Interestingly, treatment with KSK05104 activated not only ER stress marker proteins including inositol-requiring enzyme 1-alpha (IRE-1α) and protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK), but also µ-calpain, and caspase-12 in a time-dependent manner. KSK05104-induced apoptosis substantially decreased in the presence of BAPTA/AM (an intracellular calcium chelator). Taken together, these results suggest that mitochondrial dysfunction and ER stress contribute to KSK05104-induced apoptosis in human colon cancer cells.

RESUMO

A polysaccharide fraction from Diospyros kaki (PLE0) leaves was previously reported to possess immunostimulatory, anti-osteoporotic, and TGF-ß1-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition inhibitory activities. Although a few beneficial effects against colon cancer metastasis have been reported, we aimed to investigate the anti-metastatic activity of PLE0 and its underlying molecular mechanisms in HT-29 and HCT-116 human colon cancer cells. We conducted a wound-healing assay, invasion assay, qRT-PCR analysis, western blot analysis, gelatin zymography, luciferase assay, and small interfering RNA gene silencing in colon cancer cells. PLE0 concentration-dependently inhibited metastasis by suppressing cell migration and invasion. The suppression of N-cadherin and vimentin expression as well as upregulation of E-cadherin through the reduction of p-GSK3ß and ß-catenin levels resulted in the outcome of this effect. PLE0 also suppressed the expression and enzymatic activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and MMP-9, while simultaneously increasing the protein and mRNA levels of the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP-1). Furthermore, signaling data disclosed that PLE0 suppressed the transcriptional activity and phosphorylation of p65 (a subunit of NF-κB), as well as the phosphorylation of c-Jun and c-Fos (subunits of AP-1) pathway. PLE0 markedly suppressed JNK phosphorylation, and JNK knockdown significantly restored PLE0-regulated MMP-2/-9 and TIMP-1 expression. Collectively, our data indicate that PLE0 exerts an anti-metastatic effect in human colon cancer cells by inhibiting epithelial-mesenchymal transition and MMP-2/9 via downregulation of GSK3ß/ß-catenin and JNK signaling.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of udenafil 75 mg once daily in patients with erectile dysfunction following bilateral nerve-sparing robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (BNS-RALP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multi-center, prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind study was conducted. Among patients with localized prostate cancer with international index of erectile function-erectile function domain (IIEF-EF) score of 18 or higher before BNS-RALP, those who developed postoperative erectile dysfunction (IIEF-EF score 14 or less at 4 weeks after BNS-RALP) were enrolled. Enrolled patients were randomly assigned to the udenafil 75 mg daily group or the placebo group in a 2:1 ratio. Each subject was followed up at 8 weeks (V2), 20 weeks (V3), and 32 weeks (V4) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of udenafil. RESULTS: In all, 101 patients were screened, of whom 99 were enrolled. Of the 99 patients, 67 were assigned to the experimental group and 32 to the control group. Ten (14.93%) patients in the experimental group and 10 (31.25%) in the control group dropped out of the study. After 32 weeks of treatment, IIEF-EF score of 22 or higher was seen in 36.51% (23/63) of patients in the experimental group and 13.04% (3/23) patients in the control group (p=0.021). The proportion of patients with IIEF-EF improvement of 25% or more compared to the baseline was 82.54% (52/63) in the experimental group and 62.96% (17/27) in the control group (p=0.058). CONCLUSIONS: Udenafil 75 mg once daily after BNS-RALP improved the erectile function without any severe adverse effects.

RESUMO

The unripe fruits of Rubus coreanus (Rosaceae) are used in traditional Chinese medicine to relieve kidney dysfunction. In the present study, we evaluated the protective effects of the triterpenoid glycoside niga-ichigoside F1 (NIF1) and of its aglycone 23-hydroxytormentic acid (23-HTA) isolated from the unripe fruits of Rubus coreanus (Rosaceae) against cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in renal epithelial LLC-PK1 cells. Pretreating LLC-PK1 cells with 23-HTA or NIF1 was found to prevent cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis. In addition, 23-HTA or NIF1 pretreatment significantly improved the changes associated with cisplatin toxicity by increasing levels of glutathione (GSH) and decreasing levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The activity of antioxidant enzymes including catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly lower in cisplatin-treated LL-PK1 cells, and 23-HTA or NIF1 treatment notably increased the these enzyme activity and protein and mRNA levels of CAT and manganese SOD (MnSOD). Moreover, cisplatin caused a significant decrease in nuclear levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and pretreatment with 23-HTA or NIF1 significantly suppressed the cisplatin-induced translocation of Nrf2 in LLC-PK1 cells. Taken together, these results suggest that 23-HTA ameliorates cisplatin-induced toxicity via modulation of antioxidant enzymes through activation of Nrf2 in LLC-PK1 cells.

RESUMO

Previously, the authors demonstrated that the triterpenoid glycoside niga-ichigoside F1 (NIF1) and its aglycone 23-hydroxytormentic acid (23-HTA) isolated from the unripe fruits of Rubus coreanus (Rosaceae) ameliorate cisplatin-induced toxicity in renal epithelial LLC-PK1 cells. In the present study, the nephroprotective effects of NIF1 and 23-HTA were investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats with acute renal injury induced by a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of cisplatin (7 mg/kg). Pretreatment with 23-HTA (10 mg/kg/d, per os (p.o.)) significantly reduced cisplatin-induced elevations in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine level, whereas NIF1 (10 mg/kg, p.o.) slightly reduced these levels. In addition, pretreatment with 23-HTA prevented cisplatin-induced hydroxyl radical generation, malondialdehyde (MDA) production, glutathione (GSH) depletion, and cisplatin-induced changes in the activities of oxidant and antioxidant enzymes in rat renal tissues. In addition, histopathological examinations showed that 23-HTA pretreatment reduced cisplatin-induced acute tubular necrosis and histological changes. In contrast, NIF1 was found to have a slight or no influence on cisplatin-induced oxidative enzymes and acute tubular necrosis. Taken together, these results suggest that protective effect of 23-HTA pretreatment on cisplatin-induced renal damage is associated with the attenuation of oxidative stress and the preservation of antioxidant enzymes.

RESUMO

Shear stress could be considered in the context of cellular uptake and cell-killing efficiency. Thus, mimicking the dynamic characteristics of in vivo environment is important in targeted drug delivery. We investigated the intracellular uptake and cell-killing efficiency of doxorubicin (DOX) in a free and liposomal form (Doxil(®)) under biomimetic shear stress to mimic in vivo environment. In this dynamic environment, cells demonstrated significantly higher fluorescence intensity than that of the static environment, and fluorescence microscopy images indicated increased intracellular uptake of DOX in the presence of fluidic shear stress. In cells treated with free DOX and liposomal Doxil(®), cell-killing efficiency was affected by shear stress. Taken together, shear stress, affecting drug uptake and cell-killing efficiency, is important in intracellular drug targeting.

RESUMO

Previously, we reported that 6-(3,4-dihydro-1H-isoquinolin-2-yl)-N-(6-methylpyridin-2-yl) nicotinamide (DIMN) analogues inhibited the growth of prostate cancer cells as an anti-androgenic compound. In the present study, we evaluated cytotoxic effects of these DIMN derivatives and found that DIMN-26 most potently inhibited the proliferation of the LNCap-LN3 androgen-dependent and DU145 androgen-independent prostate cancer cells through induction of G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and subsequent apoptosis. The G2/M phase arrest was found due to increases in the activation of cdc2 (also known as cyclin-dependent kinase 1, CDK1)/cyclin B1 complex. DIMN-26 also induced apoptosis in LNCap-LN3 and DU145 prostate cancer cells through activation of caspase-3, -8, and -9, and cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1). In addition, DIMN-26 caused the dephosphorylation and mitochondrial accumulation of Bad protein and induced the loss of mitochondria membrane potential, consequently releasing cytochrome c into the cytosol of the cell. Furthermore, overexpression of AKT protein significantly reduced DIMN-26-induced PARP-1 cleavage and p-Bad decrease and cdc2 activation. In addition, DIMN-26 inhibited the 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-induced cell growth and proliferation and nuclear translocation and transcriptional activities of androgen receptor (AR) in LNCap-LN3 prostate cancer cells. Consistent with these findings, DIMN-26 significantly inhibited the DHT-induced expression of AR-response genes (ARGs), such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA), AR, ß2-microglobulin (B2M), selenoprotein P (SEPP1), and ste20-related proline-alanine-rich kinase (SPAK) in LNCap-LN3 prostate cancer cells. Taken together, these results suggest that DIMN-26 plays a therapeutic role not only in induction of G2/M arrest and apoptosis but also in suppression of androgen receptor signaling in androgen-dependent and androgen-independent prostate cancer cells.

RESUMO

The antimicrobial effects of a lactic acid producing bacteria culture condensate mixture (LCCM) were assessed against Salmonella enteritidis. In the presence of LCCM, bacterial growth was assessed in vitro by the measurement of optical density (OD) and viable bacterial counting. At concentrations of 1.25 and 2.5% LCCM, OD values were significantly lower than that of the control broth, and at concentrations of 5 and 10% LCCM, OD values did not increase for the entire period of experiment. At 8 h after incubation, the viable bacterial numbers in 5% and 10% LCCM-containing broths were remarkably lower than that in the control broth. This antimicrobial ability of the LCCM was fundamentally attributed to causing cell death rather than inhibiting growth. Even when the pH of LCCM-containing broth was adjusted to 7.2, the number of viable bacteria was significantly lower in the broths containing LCCM over 2.5% than that in control broth at 8 h after incubation. However, the OD value of each culture in the presence of each concentration of the LCCM increased over 1.0 at the completion of the experiment. The in vivo antimicrobial effects of the LCCM against S. enteritidis were also assessed. In S. enteritidis-infected mice, the LCCM decreased both the viable bacteria found in the feces and the mortality rate of the mice. These findings showed that the LCCM might have an antimicrobial ability against S. enteritidis.

RESUMO

Primary schwannomas of the urinary bladder are extremely rare. They arise from Schwann's cells in nerve sheaths and are often associated with von Recklinghausen's disease. In these cases, open partial cystectomy has been the choice of treatment. We performed laparoscopic partial cystectomy in a 35-year-old man who showed a 3.5-cm solid bladder mass on pelvic CT. The lesion was found to be a primary schwannoma of the urinary bladder without evidence of von Recklinghausen disease.

RESUMO

The safety assessment of Bifidobacterium longum SPM1205 isolated from healthy Koreans and this strain's inhibitory effects on fecal harmful enzymes of intestinal microflora were investigated. The overall safety of this strain was investigated during a feeding trial. Groups of SD rats were orally administered a test strain or commercial reference strain B. longum 1 x 10(9) CFU/kg body weight/day for four weeks. Throughout this time, their feed intake, water intake and live body weight were monitored. Fecal samples were periodically collected to test harmful enzyme activities of intestinal microflora. At the end of the four-week observation period, samples of blood, liver, spleen, kidney, and gut tissues were collected to determine for hematological parameters and histological differences. The results obtained in this experiment demonstrated that four weeks of consumption of this Bifidobacterium strain had no adverse effects on rat's general health status, blood biochemical parameters or histology. Therefore, it is likely to be safe for human use. Fecal harmful enzymes such as beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, tryptophanase and urease, were effectively inhibited during the administration of the B. longum SPM1205. These results suggested that this B. longum SPM 1205 could be used for humans as a probiotic strain.

RESUMO

A Lactobacillus isolate was collected from the feces of a healthy Korean individual and named as Lactobacillus ruminus SPM0211. It was further characterized by subjecting it to an antibiotic resistance test and genetic analysis. In the antibiotic resistance test, all tested Lactobacillus spp. were classified as "high resistance" for multiple antibiotics, such as isoniazid, ethambutol, cycloserine, and vancomycin. L. ruminus SPM0211 was classified as "high resistance" for streptomycin also, while the other tested Lactobacillus spp. were classified as low resistance. This suggests that the antimicrobial spectra may be a good indicator in the discrimination of this strain among the tested Lactobacillus spp. In a polymerase chain reaction-random amplified polymorphic DNA (PCR-RAPD) analysis using the Microbial Uniprimer kit, L. ruminus SPM0211, and L. suebicus were clustered as a group with a 74.3% similarity level, suggesting that these two species are genetically related. Thus, our data suggest that the PCR-RADP method using the Microbial Uniprimer kit may be valuable in discriminating L. ruminus SPM0211 from other Lactobacillus spp.

RESUMO

The intestinal microbiota are important to the host with regard to resistance they impart against bacterial infections and their involvement in mediating metabolic functions. Lactic acid producing bacteria such as Lactobacillus play an important physiological role in these matters. The aim of the present study was to isolate Lactobacillus sp. that inhibits enteric pathogens. Initially, 17 isolates from healthy Koreans were collected on Lactobacillus selective medium. Resistance of the isolates to antibiotics including rifampicin, streptomycin, clindamycin and vancomycin was measured. One of the isolate was identified as Lactobacillus ruminus on the basis of bacterial cell morphology, cultural characteristic and biochemical characteristics, 16S rRNA sequence analysis and PCR-RAPD. Antimicrobial activity of the bacterium against Vancomycin Intermediate Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) was measured. About 10(4) cells of VISA or VRE were mixed with 1, 5, and 9 mL of L. ruminus SPM 0211 and the final volume was adjusted to 10 mL with brain heart infusion (BHI) broth. The cell suspension was incubated for 3, 6, 9, and 24 h, serially diluted and then plated on BHI agar plates. As numbers of L. ruminus SPM 0211 were increased, viable cell count of VISA and VRE decreased. The strongest antimicrobial activity of SPM 0211 was observed after 9 h incubation in any mixture, almost completely inhibiting the growth of these two bacteria. The results suggest that the freshly isolated L. ruminus SPM 0211 may be used as a pro-biotic microbe that prevents the colonization of enteric pathogens and can thereby promote good gastrointestinal health.

RESUMO

In various applications involving liquid crystals, the manipulation of the nanoscale molecular assembly and microscale director alignment is highly useful. Here we show that a nematic-isotropic mixture, a unique bi-liquid system, has potential for the fabrication of microstructures having an ordered phase within a disordered phase, or vice versa. The volume expansion and shrinkage, migration, splitting, mergence and elongation of one phase within the other are easily accomplished via thermal treatment and dielectrophoretic manipulation. This is particularly achievable when one phase is suspended in the middle. In that case, a highly biased ordered-phase preference of surfaces, that is, the nematic-philic nature of a polyimide layer and the nematic-phobic nature of a self-assembled monolayer of chlorosilane derivatives, is used. Further, by combining this approach with photopolymerization, the patterned microstructure is solidified as a patterned polymer film having both isotropic and anisotropic molecular arrangements simultaneously, or as a template with a morphological variation.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Rectal volume and movement are major factors that influence prostate location. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a rectal enema on intrafraction prostate motion. METHODS: The data from 12 patients with localised prostate cancer were analysed. Each patient underwent image-guided radiotherapy (RT), receiving a total dose of 70 Gy in 28 fractions. Rectal enemas were administered to all of the patients before each RT fraction. The location of the prostate was determined by implanting three fiducial markers under the guidance of transrectal ultrasound. Each patient underwent preparation for IGRT twice before an RT fraction and in the middle of the fraction. The intrafraction displacement of the prostate was calculated by comparing fiducial marker locations before and in the middle of an RT fraction. RESULTS: The rectal enemas were well tolerated by patients. The mean intrafraction prostate movement in 336 RT fractions was 1.11 ± 0.77 mm (range 0.08-7.20 mm). Intrafraction motions of 1, 2 and 3 mm were observed in 56.0%, 89.0% and 97.6% of all RT fractions, respectively. The intrafraction movements on supero-inferior and anteroposterior axes were larger than on the right-to-left axes (P < 0.05). The CTV-to-PTV margin necessary to allow for movement, calculated using the van Herk formula (2.5Σ + 0.7σ), was 1.50 mm. CONCLUSIONS: A daily rectal enema before each RT fraction was tolerable and yielded little intrafraction prostate displacement. We think the use of rectal enemas is a feasible method to reduce prostate movement during RT.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of tadalafil 5 mg once daily use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) after robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study retrospectively evaluated 92 patients who underwent RALP at Dong-A University Hospital. The patients were surveyed by use of the abridged five-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire, which was self-administered before surgery and at 6 months and 1 year after surgery. The 92 patients were classified into the tadalafil group (n=47) and the non-tadalafil group (n=45). Each group was then classified depending on the nerve-sparing (NS) procedure used: bilateral NS or unilateral NS. RESULTS: At 6 months, the total IIEF-5 scores of the tadalafil group and the non-tadalafil group were 10.0±3.4 and 7.0±4.0, respectively. At 1 year, the total IIEF-5 score in the tadalafil group was significantly greater than that in the non-tadalafil group (13.2±5.6 vs. 7.7±4.8, p<0.0001). Statistically significant improvements (p<0.05) were observed in the tadalafil group for all 5 domains of the IIEF-5 score, whereas in the non-tadalafil group there was no significant improvement in any of the domains at 1 year. The reported side effects were flushing (8.5%, n=4), headache (4.3%, n=2), and dizziness (2.1%, n=1). CONCLUSIONS: In ED patients after NS RALP, a once-daily dose of tadalafil 5 mg was well tolerated and significantly improved EF compared with that in the non-tadalafil group.

RESUMO

Lymphangioma is a rare, benign mesenchymal neoplasm, which is characterized by numerous intercommunicating cystic spaces containing lymphatic fluid. It is considered a congenital disease resulting from the obstruction of regional lymph drainage during the developmental period. Lymphangioma may be focal/unilateral or diffuse/bilateral, and in the latter case, it is referred to as lymphangiomatosis. Here, we report a case of a 38-year-old man with perirenal lymphangiomatosis. The patient's chief complaint was left flank pain, and left pleural effusion was found on radiological examination. After radical nephrectomy, the pathological examinations revealed that the kidney was enclosed by a multicystic mass with intrarenal cystic dilatations. RESUMO

We previously demonstrated that 7-hydroxyl-1-methylindole-3-acetonitrile (7-HMIA), a synthesized analog of arvelexin, showed the strong inhibitory effects on LPS-induced NO and PGE2 production in macrophages. In this study, we focused on elucidating the anti-inflammatory properties of 7-HMIA and the mechanisms involved using in vitro and in vivo experimental models. In LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages, 7-HMIA significantly inhibited the release of proinflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). We also found that 7-HMIA suppressed PGE2 production not by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression or activity, but rather by suppressing the mRNA stability of microsomal prostaglandin E synthase (mPGES-1). Furthermore, 7-HMIA mediated attenuation of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), TNF-α, and IL-6 was closely associated with suppression of transcriptional activities of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), by decreasing p65 nuclear translocation and Akt phosphorylation. Animal studies revealed that 7-HMIA potently suppressed the carrageenan-induced paw edema and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in paw tissues. Taken together, our data indicated that the molecular basis for the anti-inflammatory properties of 7-HMIA involved the inhibition of mRNA stability of mPGES-1 and PI3K/Akt-mediated NF-κB pathways.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe our initial experience with the second-generation Single Port Instrument Delivery Extended Reach (SPIDER) laparoendoscopic single-site surgical system in a porcine model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In four swine weighing approximately 32 to 35 kg, five nephrectomies, four adrenalectomies, three pyeloplasties, and three partial cystectomies and closures were performed by a single surgeon. The swine were placed in the lateral flank position under general anesthesia. The SPIDER surgical system was introduced through a single incision and the various urological procures were performed by use of flexible instrumentation. RESULTS: All five nephrectomies, four adrenalectomies, three pyeloplasties, and three partial cystectomies and closures were performed successfully without additional skin incisions. The mean time to set up the SPIDER platform was 3.5 minutes. The mean operative time for the right and left nephrectomies was 45.4 minutes and 47.8 minutes, respectively. The mean operative time for the right and left adrenalectomies was 37.6 minutes and 35.4 minutes, respectively. The mean operative time for the pyeloplasties for one right and two left ureters was 45.6 minutes and 47.3 minutes, respectively. The mean operative time for the partial cystectomies and closures was 18.6 minutes. There were no noticeable intraoperative complications except for minimal urine leakage in the first pyeloplasty. CONCLUSIONS: In this initial pilot evaluation, the second-generation SPIDER surgical system offered intuitive instrument maneuverability and restored triangulation. However, retraction was challenging because of the lack of strength and the limited ability for precise manipulation of the tip. Future refinements of the technology and prospective studies are needed to optimize the application of this technology in urology.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) by age and current condition as a first-line treatment for pediatric and adolescent urolithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The computerized records of 55 children were retrospectively reviewed from March 1991 to July 2007. The children were below 18 years of age and had undergone ESWL monotherapy for urolithiasis. There were 36 boys (65.5%) and 19 girls (34.5%), with a mean age of 8.5 years (range, 0.5-18 years). There were 24 patients aged 7 years or less and 31 patients aged more than 7 years. RESULTS: The mean size of the stones was 9.48 mm (range, 4-22 mm). The overall success rate of ESWL was 90.9% (50 children). The mean number of ESWL sessions was 2.02 (range, 1-10). The mean number of ESWL sessions for the patient group aged 7 years or less was 1.16 (range, 1-2) and that for the patient group aged more than 7 years was 2.97 (range, 1-10; p=0.037). There was also a statistically significant difference in the mean number of ESWL sessions between the younger and older patients who needed general anesthesia (1.16 vs. 2.2 sessions, respectively; 0.042). CONCLUSIONS: In the patient group aged 7 years or less, the number of ESWL sessions and the complication rate were comparable with those for endoscopic management. Thus, ESWL is an effective first-line treatment modality for patients aged less than 7 years.

RESUMO

In this work, high-reflectance brilliant white color magnetic microspheres comprising a Fe/TiO2/Ag core-shell structure with a continuous, uniform compact silver layer were successfully fabricated by TiO2-assisted electroless plating in a simple and eco-friendly method. The coating procedure for TiO2 and Ag involved a sol-gel reaction and electroless plating with ultrasound treatment. The electroless plating step was carried out in an eco-friendly manner in a single process without environmentally toxic additives. The TiO2 layer was used as a modification layer between the Fe microspheres and the silver layer to improve adhesion. A continuous and compact silver layer could be formed with a high degree of morphological control by introducing ultrasonication and adjusting the ammonium hydroxide concentration.
