Objectives: In this selective review we provide an overview of the current pre- and postnatal screenings up to 18 years established in Germany to inform physicians of different medical fields (gynecologists, pediatricians, general practitioners, other medical specialists who treat children, adolescents or pregnant females). Current State: Research on screening for different types of cancer has frequently failed to show any benefit. Thus, there is a need to broaden the evidence basis related to medical screenings especially for children and adolescents. Outlook: Potential future developments of pre- and postnatal screenings are illustrated including their social impact. The lack of an early detection of mental health problems is pointed out. An interdisciplinary collaboration and research is required to accumulate evidence with regard to medical screenings and to consider health economic and ethical aspects.

[Presurgical neuropsychological assessment in epilepsy: the Wada test].

37 candidates for epilepsy surgery underwent the intracarotid amytal procedure (IAP; also known as the Wada test) to determine hemispheric speech dominance and memory capacity. 31 demonstrated left hemisphere speech dominance, 2 showed evidence for bilateral language and 4 demonstrated right hemispheric language dominance. Our study supports a correlational relationship between handedness, lesion laterality and age of onset of seizures, as reported in earlier studies. Left-handed patients with a left hemisphere lesion whose seizures began to an early age had a strong tendency for reversed language dominance. Asymmetry of at least 20% in performing the memory test was taken as the cutoff score for demonstrating laterality of lesions. The asymmetry score correctly predicted laterality of lesions in all 28 patients; 6 did not have asymmetry scores and 3 were examined for language only. None of the patients who successfully passed the Wada memory test had any significant postsurgical memory deficits; 1 had transient reduction in verbal memory and 4 who did not pass the test were not operated on for this reason. Our results demonstrate the importance of the Wada test in determining cerebral speech dominance, in predicting post-surgical amnesia, and support its usefulness in predicting laterality of seizure focus in candidates for temporal lobectomy.

Synthesis of a water-soluble protein cross-linking reagent.

2,4-Difluoro-5-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid has been synthesized by the sulfonation of 2,4-difluoronitrobenzene, and precipitated with KCl as the potassium sulfonate. The structure was confirmed by chemical and spectroscopic methods (IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 19F-NMR, UV, MS and ultimate organic analysis). Lysozyme was cross-linked with the potassium sulfonate and with 1,5-difluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene. The products were analysed by SDS-PAGE and compared. The cross-linking conditions were optimized.
