RESUMO

This paper reports design, fabrication, and experimental demonstration of a silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The PIC is capable of conducting one-dimensional interferometric imaging with twelve baselines near λ = 1100-1600 nm. The PIC consists of twelve waveguide pairs, each leading to a multi-mode interferometer (MMI) that forms broadband interference fringes or each corresponding pair of the waveguides. Then an 18 channel arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) separates the combined signal into 18 signals of different wavelengths. A total of 103 sets of fringes are collected by the detector array at the output of the PIC. We keep the optical path difference (OPD) of each interferometer baseline to within 1 µm to maximize the visibility of the interference measurement. We also constructed a testbed to utilize the PIC for two-dimension complex visibility measurement with various targets. The experiment shows reconstructed images in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

We designed and demonstrated a tri-layer Si3N4/SiO2 photonic integrated circuit capable of vertical interlayer coupling with arbitrary splitting ratios. Based on this multilayer photonic integrated circuit platform with each layer thicknesses of 150 nm, 50 nm, and 150 nm, we designed and simulated the vertical Y-junctions and 3D couplers with arbitrary power splitting ratios between 1:10 and 10:1 and with negligible(< -50 dB) reflection. Based on the design, we fabricated and demonstrated tri-layer vertical Y-junctions with the splitting ratios of 1:1 and 3:2 with excess optical losses of 0.230 dB. Further, we fabricated and demonstrated the 1 × 3 3D couplers with the splitting ratio of 1:1:4 for symmetric structures and variable splitting ratio for asymmetric structures.

This paper demonstrates rapidly reconfigurable, high-fidelity optical arbitrary waveform generation (OAWG) in a heterogeneous photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The heterogeneous PIC combines advantages of high-speed indium phosphide (InP) modulators and low-loss, high-contrast silicon nitride (Si3N4) arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) so that high-fidelity optical waveform syntheses with rapid waveform updates are possible. The generated optical waveforms spanned a 160 GHz spectral bandwidth starting from an optical frequency comb consisting of eight comb lines separated by 20 GHz channel spacing. The Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) values of the generated waveforms were approximately 16.4%. The OAWG module can rapidly and arbitrarily reconfigure waveforms upon every pulse arriving at 2 ns repetition time. The result of this work indicates the feasibility of truly dynamic optical arbitrary waveform generation where the reconfiguration rate or the modulator bandwidth must exceed the channel spacing of the AWG and the optical frequency comb.

We demonstrate hybrid integration of modified uni-traveling carrier photodiodes on a multi-layer silicon nitride platform using total reflection mirrors etched by focused ion beam. The hybrid photodetectors show external responsivity of 0.15 A/W and bandwidth of 3.5 GHz for devices with a diameter of 80 µm. The insertion loss of the waveguide is 3 dB and the coupling efficiency of the total reflection mirror is -3 dB. The highest RF output power is -0.5 dBm measured at 3 GHz with 9 mA photocurrent and -9 V bias.

We demonstrate subwavelength bidirectional grating (SWG) coupled slot waveguide fabricated in silicon-on-sapphire for transverse electric polarized wave operation at 3.4 µm wavelength. Coupling efficiency of 29% for SWG coupler is experimentally achieved. Propagation loss of 11 dB/cm has been experimentally obtained for slot waveguides. Two-step taper mode converters with an insertion loss of 0.13 dB are used to gradually convert the strip waveguide mode into slot waveguide mode.

Paraquat (PQ), a toxic and nonselective bipyridyl herbicide, is one of the most extensively used pesticides in agricultural countries. In addition to pneumotoxicity, the liver is an important target organ for PQ poisoning in humans. However, the mechanism of PQ in hepatotoxicity remains unclear. In this study, we found that exposure of rat hepatic H4IIE cells to PQ (0.1-2 mM) induced significant cytotoxicity and apoptosis, which was accompanied by mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signals, including loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), cytosolic cytochrome c release, and changes in the Bcl-2/Bax mRNA ratio. Moreover, PQ (0.5 mM) exposure markedly induced JNK and ERK1/2 activation, but not p38-MAPK. Blockade of JNK and ERK1/2 signaling by pretreatment with the specific pharmacological inhibitors SP600125 and PD98059, respectively, effectively prevented PQ-induced cytotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptotic events. Additionally, PQ exposure stimulated significant oxidative stress-related signals, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and intracellular glutathione (GSH) depletion, which could be reversed by the antioxidant N-Acetylcysteine (NAC). Buffering the oxidative stress response with NAC also effectively abrogated PQ-induced hepatotoxicity, MMP loss, apoptosis, and phosphorylation of JNK and ERK1/2 protein, however, the JNK or ERK inhibitors did not suppress ROS generation in PQ-treated cells. Collectively, these results demonstrate that PQ exposure induces hepatic cell toxicity and death via an oxidative stress-dependent JNK/ERK activation-mediated downstream mitochondria-regulated apoptotic pathway.

We experimentally demonstrate simultaneous selective detection of xylene and trichloroethylene (TCE) using multiplexed photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) by near-infrared optical absorption spectroscopy on a chip. Based on the slow light effect of photonic crystal structure, the sensitivity of our device is enhanced to 1 ppb (v/v) for xylene and 10 ppb (v/v) for TCE in water. Multiplexing is enabled by multimode interference power splitters and Y-combiners that integrate multiple PCWs on a silicon chip in a silicon-on-insulator platform.

We experimentally demonstrated photonic crystal microcavity based resonant sensors coupled to photonic crystal waveguides in silicon nano-membrane on insulator for chemical and bio-sensing. Linear L-type microcavities are considered. In contrast to cavities with small mode volumes, but low quality factors for bio-sensing, we showed increasing the length of the microcavity enhances the quality factor of the resonance by an order of magnitude and increases the resonance wavelength shift while retaining compact device characteristics. Q~26760 and sensitivity down to 15 ng/ml and ~110 pg/mm2 in bio-sensing was experimentally demonstrated on silicon-on-insulator devices.

We experimentally demonstrate highly efficient coupling into a slow light slotted photonic crystal waveguide. With optical mode converters and group index tapers that provide good optical mode matching and impedance matching, a nearly flat transmission over the entire guided mode spectrum of 68.8 nm range with 2.4 dB minimum insertion loss is demonstrated. Measurements also show up to 20 dB baseline enhancement and 30 dB enhancement in the slow light region, indicating that it is possible to design highly efficient and compact devices that benefit from the slow light enhancement without increasing the coupling loss.

A solution approach based on Au(CN)(2)(-) chemistry is reported for the formation of nanoparticles. The covalent character of the Au(CN)(2)(-) precursor was exploited in the formation of sub-10 nm nanospheres (≈2.4 nm) and highly monodisperse icosahedral Au nanoparticles (≈8 nm) at room temperature in a one-pot aqueous synthesis. The respective spherical and icosahedral Au morphologies can be controlled by either the absence or presence of the polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Using Au(CN)(2)(-) as a metal ion source, our findings suggest that the addition of citrate ions is necessary to enhance the particle formation rate as well as to generate a more homogeneous colloidal dispersion. Because of the presence of oxygen and the operation of a CN(-) etching process associated with Au(CN)(2)(-) complex formation, an interesting reversible formation-dissolution process was observed, which allowed us to repeatedly prepare spherical and icosahedral Au nanoparticles. Time-dependent TEM images and UV/Vis spectra were carefully acquired to study the reversibility of this formation-dissolution process. In view of the accompanying generation of toxic cyanide anions, we have developed a protocol to recycle cyanide in the presence of citrate ions through ferric ferrocyanide formation. After completion of particle formation, the residual solutions containing citrate ions and cyanide ions were processed to stain iron oxide nanoparticles endocytosized in cells. Additionally, the as-prepared 8 nm Au icosahedra could be isolated and grown to larger 57 nm-sized icosahedra using the seed-mediated growth approach.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect and mechanism of ulinastatin (UTI) on development of lungs in fetal rabbits with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). METHODS: Twenty pregnant rabbits were equally divided into normal, IUGR, UTI, and LY groups. The normal group was only injected with saline and marked with tattoo ink. IUGR models were established by injecting N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester in the rabbits of IUGR, UTI, and LY groups. The three groups were injected with saline, UTI, or UTI + LY294002 (PI3K inhibitor) respectively, and then marked with tattoo ink. After cesarean section, neonatal weights, and levels of dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), nitric oxide (NO), P-Akt, P-eNOS, and pulmonary surfactant-associated protein A (SP-A) were determined in tissues of the lungs. Radial alveoli count (RAC), pulmonary interstitial ratio, and ultrastructural changes in type II alveolar epithelial cells (AEC II) were also determined through light and electron microscopy. RESULTS: Compared with control, the IUGR group showed significantly decreased weight, RAC, lamellar bodies in AEC II, and levels of P-Akt, P-eNOS, DPPC, NO, and SP-A, and increased pulmonary interstitial ratio (p < .05). The UTI treatment did not affect the weight; however, all other parameters were opposite to those observed in the IUGR group (p < .05). Furthermore, these UTI-mediated changes were inhibited by LY294002. CONCLUSIONS: Intraperitoneal UTI injection can promote the development of lungs and increase pulmonary surfactant production in IUGR fetal rabbits, potentially by activating PI3K/Akt/eNOS/NO signaling.

We demonstrate a 300 µm long silicon photonic crystal (PC) slot waveguide device for on-chip near-infrared absorption spectroscopy, based on the Beer-Lambert law for the detection of methane gas. The device combines slow light in a PC waveguide with high electric field intensity in a low-index 90 nm wide slot, which effectively increases the optical absorption path length. A methane concentration of 100 ppm (parts per million) in nitrogen was measured.

Corrosion protection of complex surface is an active area of research due to its importance to commercial applications such as electrochemical fabrication. However, conventional coatings exhibit limited conductivity, thermal stability, and durability and are thus not suitable. Recent work has shown the potential of graphene, a two-dimensional carbon allotrope, for corrosion protection. The studies, however, limited themselves to simple planar geometries that provide limited insight in the applicability to relevant morphologies such as mesh electrodes and roughened surfaces. We here study the corrosion protection ability of tubular graphene (TG) on Ni-wires as a model system for such complex geometries. TG-covered Ni wires of approximately 50 µm diameters were produced by the annealing of cellulose acetate (CA) on Ni. The high quality of the TG coating was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electrical measurements. We show that the graphene layer number could be controlled by adjusting the CA membrane quantity. We found a direct relation between the degree of corrosion inhibition with the variation of graphene layer number. The increase of graphene layers on a Ni surface could enhance its corrosion inhibition in acidic, basic, and marine environments, which shows the potential of our approach for future applications.

A total of 112 cases of Naja atra envenomation were examined at two referring hospitals: Taichung Veterans General Hospital in central Taiwan and Taipei Veterans General Hospital (VGH-TP) in northern Taiwan. Overall, 77% (86/112) of cases developed clinically suspected wound infections and 54% (61/112) required surgery secondary to tissue necrosis, finger or toe gangrene, and/or necrotizing fasciitis. Morganella morganii was the most abundant gram-negative bacterial strain isolated from bite wounds, followed by Proteus spp., Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Providencia spp. in descending order; Enterococcus spp. were the most common gram-positive bacteria and Bacteroides spp. were the only anaerobic bacteria. A few episodes of bacteremia were caused by Bacteroides and Shewanella spp. There were no significant variations in the distribution of bacterial species between these two hospitals except for a higher incidence of M. morganii, Enterococcus spp., and polymicrobial infection observed at VGH-TP, which may have been related to variations in the fecal flora of prey and oral flora of individual snakes in different geographic areas in Taiwan. According to the susceptibility test involving various pathogens, first-line drug options for the management of N. atra snakebite wound infections may include monotherapy with ureidopenicillin or combination therapy with aminopenicillin and a third-generation cephalosporin or fluoroquinolone. A prospective evaluation of empiric antibiotic therapy for the management of N. atra snakebite should be considered.

Flexible inorganic electronic devices promise numerous applications, especially in fields that could not be covered satisfactorily by conventional rigid devices. Benefits on a similar scale are also foreseeable for silicon photonic components. However, the difficulty in transferring intricate silicon photonic devices has deterred widespread development. In this paper, we demonstrate a flexible single-crystal silicon nanomembrane photonic crystal microcavity through a bonding and substrate removal approach. The transferred cavity shows a quality factor of 2.2×10(4) and could be bent to a curvature of 5 mm radius without deteriorating the performance compared to its counterparts on rigid substrates. A thorough characterization of the device reveals that the resonant wavelength is a linear function of the bending-induced strain. The device also shows a curvature-independent sensitivity to the ambient index variation.

We demonstrate experimentally that in photonic crystal sensors with a side-coupled cavity-waveguide configuration, group velocity of the propagating mode in the coupled waveguide at the frequency of the resonant mode plays an important role in enhancing the sensitivity. In linear L13 photonic crystal microcavities, with nearly same resonance mode quality factors ∼7000 in silicon-on-insulator devices, sensitivity increased from 57 nm/RIU to 66 nm/RIU as group index in the coupled waveguide increased from 10.2 to 13.2. Engineering for highest sensitivity in such planar integrated sensors, thus, requires careful slow light design for optimized sensor sensitivity.

We experimentally demonstrate label-free photonic crystal (PC) microcavity biosensors in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) to detect the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) transcription factor, ZEB1, in minute volumes of sample. Multiplexed specific detection of ZEB1 in lysates from NCI-H358 lung cancer cells down to an estimated concentration of 2 cells per micro-liter is demonstrated. L13 photonic crystal microcavities, coupled to W1 photonic crystal waveguides, are employed in which resonances show high Q in the bio-ambient phosphate buffered saline (PBS). When the sensor surface is derivatized with a specific antibody, the binding of the corresponding antigen from a complex whole-cell lysate generates a change in refractive index in the vicinity of the photonic crystal microcavity, leading to a change in the resonance wavelength of the resonance modes of the photonic crystal microcavity. The shift in the resonance wavelength reveals the presence of the antigen. The sensor cavity has a surface area of ∼11µm(2). Multiplexed sensors permit simultaneous detection of many binding interactions with specific immobilized antibodies from the same bio-sample at the same instant of time. Specificity was demonstrated using a sandwich assay which further amplifies the detection sensitivity at low concentrations. The device represents a proof-of-concept demonstration of label-free, high throughput, multiplexed detection of cancer cells with specificity and sensitivity on a silicon chip platform.

Current trends in photonic crystal microcavity biosensors in silicon-on-insulator (SOI), that focus on small and smaller sensors have faced a bottleneck trying to balance two contradictory requirements of resonance quality factor and sensitivity. By simultaneous control of the radiation loss and optical mode volumes, we show that both requirements can be satisfied simultaneously. Microcavity sensors are designed in which resonances show highest Q ≈ 9300 in the bio-ambient phosphate buffered saline (PBS) as well as highest sensitivity among photonic crystal biosensors. We experimentally demonstrated mass sensitivity 8.8 atto-grams with sensitivity per unit area of 0.8 pg/mm(2). Highest sensitivity, irrespective of the dissociation constant K(d), is demonstrated among all existing label-free optical biosensors in silicon at the concentration of 0.1 µg/ml.

We experimentally demonstrate a method to create large-scale chip-integrated photonic crystal sensor microarrays by combining the optical power splitting characteristics of multi-mode interference (MMI) power splitters and transmission drop resonance characteristics of multiple photonic crystal microcavities arrayed along the length of the same photonic crystal waveguide. L13 photonic crystal microcavities are employed which show high Q values (~9300) in the bio-ambient phosphate buffered saline (PBS) as well as high sensitivity, experimentally demonstrated to ~98 atto-grams. Two different probe antibodies were specifically detected simultaneously with a control sample, in the same experiment.
