RESUMO

Regulatory T (Treg) cells maintain immune tolerance through the master transcription factor forkhead box P3 (FOXP3), which is crucial for Treg cell function and homeostasis. We identified an IPEX (immune dysregulation polyendocrinopathy enteropathy X-linked) syndrome patient with a FOXP3 mutation in the domain swap interface of the protein. Recapitulation of this Foxp3 variant in mice led to the development of an autoimmune syndrome consistent with an unrestrained T helper type 2 (Th2) immune response. Genomic analysis of Treg cells by RNA-sequencing, Foxp3 chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by high-throughput DNA sequencing (ChIP-sequencing), and H3K27ac-HiChIP revealed a specific de-repression of the Th2 transcriptional program leading to the generation of Th2-like Treg cells that were unable to suppress extrinsic Th2 cells. Th2-like Treg cells showed increased intra-chromosomal interactions in the Th2 locus, leading to type 2 cytokine production. These findings identify a direct role for Foxp3 in suppressing Th2-like Treg cells and implicate additional pathways that could be targeted to restrain Th2 trans-differentiated Treg cells.

OBJECTIVE: Co-occurring anti-tripartite motif-containing protein 9 and 67 autoantibodies (TRIM9/67-IgG) have been reported in only a very few cases of paraneoplastic cerebellar syndrome. The value of these biomarkers and the most sensitive methods of TRIM9/67-IgG detection are not known. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, multicenter study to evaluate the cerebrospinal fluid and serum of candidate TRIM9/67-IgG cases by tissue-based immunofluorescence, peptide phage display immunoprecipitation sequencing, overexpression cell-based assay (CBA), and immunoblot. Cases in which TRIM9/67-IgG was detected by at least 2 assays were considered TRIM9/67-IgG positive. RESULTS: Among these cases (n = 13), CBA was the most sensitive (100%) and revealed that all cases had TRIM9 and TRIM67 autoantibodies. Of TRIM9/67-IgG cases with available clinical history, a subacute cerebellar syndrome was the most common presentation (n = 7/10), followed by encephalitis (n = 3/10). Of these 10 patients, 70% had comorbid cancer (7/10), 85% of whom (n = 6/7) had confirmed metastatic disease. All evaluable cancer biopsies expressed TRIM9 protein (n = 5/5), whose expression was elevated in the cancerous regions of the tissue in 4 of 5 cases. INTERPRETATION: TRIM9/67-IgG is a rare but likely high-risk paraneoplastic biomarker for which CBA appears to be the most sensitive diagnostic assay. ANN NEUROL 2023;94:1086-1101.

We report two novel cases of autoimmune cerebellar ataxia (ACA) associated with anti-glutamate receptor δ2 antibodies (Gluδ2-Abs). The first case was confirmed by indirect immunofluorescence and cell-based assays: a 29-year-old woman presented after 5 days of headache and vomiting, a pancerebellar syndrome, downbeat nystagmus, decreased visual acuity linked to bilateral retrobulbar optic neuritis (RON), and lymphocytic pleocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) without any abnormality detected using cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Second-line immunotherapy allowed progressive clinical improvement, with full recovery achieved after a 4-year follow-up. Thereafter, we retrospectively tested Gluδ2-Abs in 350 patients with a suspicion of autoimmune encephalitis without characterized autoantibody. We identified a second case, a 12-year-old boy who developed 10 days after a respiratory infection, a static cerebellar syndrome with lymphocytosis in the CSF, and right cerebellum hyperintensity in MRI. Five days of corticosteroid treatment allowed a quick clinical improvement. No tumor was identified in both cases, whereas laboratory analyses revealed autoimmune stigma. The present cases suggested that ACA associated with Gluδ2-Abs is an extremely rare but treatable disease. Therefore, testing for Gluδ2-Abs might be considered in the setting of suspected ACA and no initial antibody identification. The visual deficits and ocular motility abnormalities observed in the first reported case might be part of the clinical spectrum of Gluδ2-Abs ACA. Young age, infectious prodromes, lymphocytic pleocytosis, and autoimmune background usually appear together with this syndrome and should lead to discuss the initiation of immunotherapy (after ruling out differential diagnosis, especially infectious causes).

Optical wireless communication is a promising emerging technology that addresses the limitations of radio-frequency-based wireless technologies. This study presents a new hybrid modulation method for optical camera communication (OCC), which integrates two waveforms transmitted from a single transmitter light-emitting diode (LED) and receives data through two rolling shutter camera devices on the receiver side. Then, a smart camera with a high-resolution image sensor captures the high-frequency signal, and a low-resolution image sensor from a smartphone camera captures the low-frequency signal. Based on this hybrid scheme, two data streams are transmitted from a single LED, which reduces the cost of the indoor OCC device compared with transmitting two signals from two different LEDs. In the proposed scheme, rolling-shutter orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing is used for the high-frequency signals, and M-ary frequency-shift keying is used for the low-frequency signals in the time domain. This proposed scheme is compatible with smartphone and USB cameras. By controlling the OCC parameters, the hybrid scheme can be implemented with high performance for a communication distance of 10 m.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs) are a group of diseases mainly characterised by recurrent optic neuritis and/or myelitis. Most cases are associated with a pathogenic antibody against aquaporin-4 (AQP4-Ab), while some patients display autoantibodies targeting the myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibodies (MOG-Abs)). Anti-Argonaute antibodies (Ago-Abs) were first described in patients with rheumatological conditions and were recently reported as a potential biomarker in patients with neurological disorders. The aims of the study were to investigate if Ago-Abs can be detected in NMOSD and to evaluate its clinical usefulness. METHODS: Sera from patients prospectively referred to our centre with suspected NMOSD were tested for AQP4-Abs, MOG-Abs and Ago-Abs with cell-based assays. RESULTS: The cohort included 104 prospective patients: 43 AQP4-Abs-positive cases, 34 MOG-Abs positive cases and 27 double-negative patients. Ago-Abs were detected in 7 of 104 patients (6.7%). Clinical data were available for six of seven patients. The median age at onset of patients with Ago-Abs was 37.5 [IQR 28.8-50.8]; five of six patients tested positive also for AQP4-Abs. Clinical presentation at onset was transverse myelitis in five patients, while one presented with diencephalic syndrome and experienced a transverse myelitis during follow-up. One case presented a concomitant polyradiculopathy. Median EDSS score at onset was 7.5 [IQR 4.8-8.4]; median follow-up was 40.3 months [IQR 8.3-64.7], and median EDSS score at last evaluation was 4.25 [IQR 1.9-5.5]. CONCLUSION: Ago-Abs are present in a subset of patients with NMOSD and, in some cases, represent the only biomarker of an autoimmune process. Their presence is associated with a myelitis phenotype and a severe disease course.

In this study, the features of resistive random access memory (RRAM) employing a straightforward Cr/MAPbI3 /FTO three-layer structure have been examined and clarified. The device displays various resistance switching (RS) behavior at various sweep voltages between 0.5 and 5 V. The RS effect has a conversion in the direction of the SET and RESET processes during sweeping for a number of cycles at a specific voltage. The directional change of the RS processes corresponds to the dominant transition between the generation/recombination of iodide ion and vacancy in the MAPbI3 perovskite layer and the electrochemical metallization of the Cr electrode under the influence of an electric field, which results in the conductive filament (CF) formation/rupture. At each stage, these processes are controlled by specific charge conduction mechanisms, including Ohmic conduction, space-charge-limited conduction (SCLC), and variable-range hopping (VRH). By identifying the biased voltage and the quantity of voltage sweep cycles, one can take a new approach to control or modulate the pathways for effective charge transport. This new approach is made possible by an understanding of the RS characteristics and the corresponding mechanisms causing the variation of RS behavior in the structure.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent reductions in Vietnam, malaria transmission persists in some areas in forests and farmlands where a high density of Anopheles mosquitoes relative to other environments occurs. To inform effective malaria control measures, it is important to understand vector bionomics and the malaria transmission role of Anopheles spp. in the highland regions of Vietnam. This study was conducted to quantify the abundance, composition and biting behaviour of the Anopheles mosquito population, and the proportion of Plasmodium spp. infected mosquitoes collected from forest and agricultural farm sites in Gia Lai province, Vietnam. METHODS: Forest and agricultural farm sites in Gia Lai province were selected for mosquito collections (total eight sites). Mosquito collection was performed by Human-baited Double Net Trap (HDNT), animal-baited traps (ABT) using cattle, and CDC light traps. Captured mosquitoes were identified morphologically, and salivary glands of Anopheles mosquitoes were examined for sporozoites using microscopy. Plasmodium infection was determined by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and identification of blood meal type was determined by PCR and diffuse serum agglutination assay. RESULTS: A total of 1815 Anopheles mosquitoes belonging to 19 species were collected by ABT (n = 1169), HDNT (n = 471) and CDC light trap (n = 175). Anopheles abundance and diversity varied by district and environment. Capture by HDNT of Anopheles of vectorial concern was observed between early evening and early morning. Plasmodium vivax infection was determined by PCR in two Anopheles dirus specimens captured by HDNT in forest sites. Blood from a range of hosts could, including human blood, could be detected in species considered primary and secondary vectors An. dirus, and Anopheles aconitus, and Anopheles maculatus, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A low number of Anopheles spp. considered primary vectors of concern and very low numbers of Plasmodium spp. infected Anopheles mosquitoes were captured at the end of the rainy season in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. However, capture species of vectorial concern by HDNT throughout the early to late evening demonstrates that use of additional personal protective measures could supplement current preventative measures, such as bed nets to prevent exposure to vectors of concern in this region.

A chiral 3D coordination compound, [Gd2(L)2(ox)2(H2O)2], arranged around a dinuclear Gd unit has been characterized by X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption measurements in the context of density functional theory studies. Core level photoemission of the Gd 5p multiplet splittings indicates that spin orbit coupling dominates over j-J coupling evident in the 5p core level spectra of Gd metal. Indications of spin-orbit coupling are consistent with the absence of inversion symmetry due to the ligand field. Density functional theory predicts antiferromagnet alignment of the Gd2 dimers and a band gap of the compound consistent with optical absorption.

Plastics, micro- and nano-plastics pollution are undoubtedly a severe and crucial ecological threat due to the durability of plastics and their destructive impacts on humans and wildlife. Most scientific investigations have addressed the classification, types, distribution, ingestion, fate, impacts, degradation, and various adverse effect of plastics. Heretofore, scanty reports have addressed implementing strategies for the remediation and mitigation of plastics. Therefore, in this paper, we review the current studies on the degradation of plastics, micro- and nano-plastics aided by microorganisms, and explore the relevant degradation properties and mechanisms. Diverse microorganisms are classified, such as bacteria, fungi, algae, cyanobacteria, wax worms, and enzymes that can decompose various plastics. Furthermore, bio-degradation is influenced by microbial features and environmental parameters; therefore, the ecological factors affecting plastic degradation and the resulting degradation consequences are discussed. In addition, the mechanisms underlying microbial-mediated plastic degradation are carefully studied. Finally, upcoming research directions and prospects for plastics degradation employing microorganisms are addressed. This review covers a comprehensive overview of the microorganism-assisted degradation of plastics, micro- and nano-plastics, and serves as a resource for future research into sustainable plastics pollution management methods.

Influenza virus infection causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Humans fail to make a universally protective memory immune response to influenza A. Hemagglutinin and Neuraminidase undergo antigenic drift and shift, resulting in new influenza A strains to which humans are naive. Seasonal vaccines are often ineffective and escape mutants have been reported to all treatments for influenza A. In the absence of a universal influenza A vaccine or treatment, influenza A will remain a significant threat to human health. The extracellular domain of the M2-ion channel (M2e) is an ideal antigenic target for a universal therapeutic agent, as it is highly conserved across influenza A serotypes, has a low mutation rate, and is essential for viral entry and replication. Previous M2e-specific monoclonal antibodies (M2e-MAbs) show protective potential against influenza A, however, they are either strain specific or have limited efficacy. We generated seven murine M2e-MAbs and utilized in vitro and in vivo assays to validate the specificity of our novel M2e-MAbs and to explore the universality of their protective potential. Our data shows our M2e-MAbs bind to M2e peptide, HEK cells expressing the M2 channel, as well as, influenza virions and MDCK-ATL cells infected with influenza viruses of multiple serotypes. Our antibodies significantly protect highly influenza A virus susceptible BALB/c mice from lethal challenge with H1N1 A/PR/8/34, pH1N1 A/CA/07/2009, H5N1 A/Vietnam/1203/2004, and H7N9 A/Anhui/1/2013 by improving survival rates and weight loss. Based on these results, at least four of our seven M2e-MAbs show strong potential as universal influenza A treatments.IMPORTANCE Despite a seasonal vaccine and multiple therapeutic treatments, Influenza A remains a significant threat to human health. The biggest obstacle is producing a vaccine or treatment for influenza A is their universality or efficacy against not only seasonal variances in the influenza virus, but also against all human, avian, and swine serotypes and, therefore, potential pandemic strains. M2e has huge potential as a target for a vaccine or treatment against influenza A. It is the most conserved external protein on the virus. Antibodies against M2e have made it to clinical trials, but not succeeded. Here, we describe novel M2e antibodies produced in mice that are not only protective at low doses, but that we extensively test to determine their universality and found to be cross protective against all strains tested. Additionally, our work begins to elucidate the critical role of isotype for an influenza A monoclonal antibody therapeutic.

We have examined the effect of electron-phonon coupling on photoluminescence and ultrafast response of electron doped monolayer MoS2, using a combination of density functional theory, time dependent density functional theory, and many-body theory. For small doping (∼1-3%) of interest here, the electron-phonon coupling parameter is modest (∼0.1-0.2) but its effect on the emissive properties and response of the system to femtosecond (fs) laser pulses is striking. We find an ultrafast (fs) relaxation of the electronic subsystem as well as a high fluence of visible light emission induced by electron phonon interaction. Together with high carrier mobility, these features of monolayer MoS2 may be relevant for optoelectronic technologies.

Vietnam has a high thalassemia burden. We collected blood samples from 5880 pregnant Vietnamese women during prenatal health checks to assess thalassemia carrier frequency using combined gap-polymerase chain reaction (gap-PCR) and targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS). Thalassemia carriers were identified with prevalence of 13.13% (772), including 7.82% (460) carriers of α-thalassemia (α-thal), 5.31% (312) carriers of ß-thalassemia (ß-thal), and 0.63% (37) concurrent α-/ß-thal carriers. Deletional mutations (368) accounted for 80.0% of α-thal carriers, of which, --SEA (Southeast Asian) (n = 254; 55.0%) was most prevalent, followed by the -α3.7 (rightward) (n = 66; 14.0%) and -α4.2 (leftward) (n = 45; 9.8%) deletions. Hb Westmead (HBA2: c.369C>G) (n = 53) and Hb Constant Spring (Hb CS or HBA2: c.427T>C) (in 28) are the two most common nondeletional α-globin variants, accounting for 11.5 and 6.0% of α-thal carriers. We detected 11 different ß-thal genotypes. Hb E (HBB: c.79G>A) (in 211) accounted for 67.6% of ß-thal carriers. The most common ß-thal genotypes were associated with mutations at codon 17 (A>T) (HBB: c.52A>T), codons 41/42 (-TTCT) (HBB: c.126_129delCTTT), and codon 71/72 (+A) (HBB: c.217_218insA) (prevalence 0.70%, 0.68%, and 0.2%, respectively). Based on mutation frequencies calculated in this study, estimates of 5021 babies in Vietnam are affected with clinically severe thalassemia annually. Our data suggest a higher thalassemia carrier frequency in Vietnam than previously reported. We established that combining NGS with gap-PCR creates an effective large-scale thalassemia screening method that can detect a broad range of mutations.

Vesicular release is one of the release mechanisms of various signaling molecules. In neurons, the molecular machinery involved in vesicular release has been designed through evolution to trigger fast and synchronous release of neurotransmitters. Similar machinery with a slower kinetic and a slightly different molecular assembly allows astrocytes to release various transmitters such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), glutamate, and D-serine. Astrocytes are important modulators of neurotransmission through gliotransmitter release. We recently demonstrated that microglia, another type of glia, release ATP to modulate synaptic transmission using astrocytes as intermediate. We now report that microglia regulate astrocytic gliotransmission through the regulation of SNARE proteins in astrocytes. Indeed, we found that gliotransmission triggered by P2Y1 agonist is impaired in slices from transgenic mice devoid of microglia. Using total internal reflection fluorescence imaging, we found that the vesicular release of gliotransmitter by astrocytes was different in cultures lacking microglia compared to vesicular release in astrocytes cocultured with microglia. Quantification of the kinetic of vesicular release indicates that the overall release appears to be faster in pure astrocyte cultures with more vesicles close to the membrane when compared to astrocytes cocultured with microglia. Finally, biochemical investigation of SNARE protein expression indicates an upregulation of VAMP2 in absence of microglia. Altogether, these results indicate that microglia seems to be involved in the regulation of an astrocytic phenotype compatible with proper gliotransmission. The mechanisms described in this study could be of importance for central nervous system diseases where microglia are activated.

A mononuclear complex [Fe(tBu2qsal)2] has been obtained by a reaction between an Fe(II) precursor salt and a tridentate ligand 2,4-di(tert-butyl)-6-((quinoline-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol (tBu2qsalH) in the presence of triethylamine. The complex exhibits a hysteretic spin transition at 117 K upon cooling and 129 K upon warming, as well as light-induced excited spin-state trapping at lower temperatures. Although the strongly cooperative spin transition suggests substantial intermolecular interactions, the complex is readily sublimable, as evidenced by the growth of its single crystals by sublimation at 573 → 373 K and ∼10-3 mbar. This seemingly antagonistic behavior is explained by the asymmetric coordination environment, in which the tBu substituents and quinoline moieties appear on opposite sides of the complex. As a result, the structure is partitioned in well-defined layers separated by van der Waals interactions between the tBu groups, while the efficient cooperative interactions within the layer are provided by the quinoline-based moieties. The abrupt spin transition is preserved in a 20 nm thin film prepared by sublimation, as evidenced by abrupt and hysteretic changes in the dielectric properties in the temperature range comparable to the one around which the spin transition is observed for the bulk material. The changes in the dielectric response are in excellent agreement with differences in the dielectric tensor of the low-spin and high-spin crystal structures evaluated by density functional theory calculations. The substantially higher volatility of [Fe(tBu2qsal)2], as compared to a similar complex without tBu substituents, suggests that asymmetric molecular shapes offer an efficient design strategy to achieve sublimable complexes with strongly cooperative spin transitions.

Single-layer, defect-laden hexagonal boron nitride (dh-BN) is attracting a great deal of attention for its diverse applications: catalysis on the one hand, and single photon emission on the other. As possible probes for identifying some common defects in single-layer h-BN, we present results of ab initio calculations for the adsorption and vibrational characteristics of syngas molecules (H2, CO, CO2) on dh-BN containing one of four types of defects: nitrogen vacancy (VN), boron vacancy (VB), Stone-Wales defect (SW), and nitrogen substituted by boron (BN). Through a comparative examination of adsorption features, charge transfer, electronic structure, and vibrational spectrum, we obtain a deep understanding of the interaction of these molecules with dh-BN and the role of the defect states. We find that while CO, CO2 and atomic hydrogen chemisorb, molecular H2 physisorbs on dh-BN with the four considered defect types. VN and VB show strong affinity for CO and CO2 since the defect states induced by them lie close to the Fermi level. SW does not favor adsorption of these small molecules, as the process for each is endothermic. In the case of BN, CO adsorbs strongly but CO2 only weakly. Vibrational frequencies of notable modes localized at the adsorbed molecules are analyzed and suggested as measures for identification of the defect type. Through a simple comparison of adsorption characteristics of the molecules on these defects, we propose dh-BN with VN to be a good catalyst candidate for CO2 hydrogenation.

In the quest for cheap and efficient catalysts for alcohol synthesis from syngas, a material of interest is single-layer MoS2 owing to its low cost, abundancy, and flexible structure. Because of the inertness of its basal plane, however, it is essential to find ways that make it catalytically active. Herein, by means of density functional theory based calculations of reaction pathways and activation energy barriers and accompanying kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we show that while S vacancy row structures activate the MoS2 basal plane, further enhancement of chemical activity and selectivity can be achieved by interfacing the MoS2 layer with a metallic support. When defect-laden MoS2 is grown on Cu(111), there is not only an increase in the active region (surface area of active sites) but also charge transfer from Cu to MoS2, resulting in a shift of the Fermi level such that the frontier states (d orbitals of the exposed Mo atoms) appear close to it, making the MoS2/Cu(111) system ready for catalytic activity. Our calculated thermodynamics of reaction pathways lead to the conclusion that the Cu(111) substrate promotes both methanol and ethanol as the products, while kinetic Monte Carlo simulations suggest a high selectivity toward the formation of ethanol.

The reaction of CO and O2 with submonolayer and multilayer CoOx films on Pt(111), to produce CO2, was investigated at room temperature in the mTorr pressure regime. Using operando ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high pressure scanning tunneling microscopy, as well as density functional theory calculations, we found that the presence of oxygen vacancies in partially oxidized CoOx films significantly enhances the CO oxidation activity to form CO2 upon exposure to mTorr pressures of CO at room temperature. In contrast, CoO films without O-vacancies are much less active for CO2 formation at RT, and CO only adsorbed in the form of carbonate species that are stable up to 260 °C. On submonolayer CoOx islands, the carbonates form preferentially at island edges, deactivating the edge sites for CO2 formation, even while the reaction proceeds inside the islands. These results provide a detailed understanding of CO oxidation pathways on systems where noble metals such as Pt interact with reducible oxides.

We investigated the gut microbiota of rabbit fish larvae at three locations in Vietnam (ThuanAn-northern, QuangNam-intermediate, BinhDinh-southern sampling site) over a three-year period. In the wild, the first food for rabbit fish larvae remains unknown, while the juveniles and adults are herbivores, forming schools near the coasts, lagoons, and river mouths, and feeding mainly on filamentous algae. This is the first study on the gut microbiota of the wild fish larvae and with a large number of individuals analyzed spatially and temporally. The Clostridiales order was the most predominant in the gut, and location-by-location alpha diversity showed significant differences in Chao-1, Hill number 1, and evenness. Analysis of beta diversity indicated that the location, not year, had an effect on the composition of the microbiota. In 2014, the gut microbiota of fish from QuangNam was different from that in BinhDinh; in 2015, the gut microbiota was different for all locations; and, in 2016, the gut microbiota in ThuanAn was different from that in the other locations. There was a time-dependent trend in the north-south axis for the gut microbiota, which is considered to be tentative awaiting larger datasets. We found limited variation in the gut microbiota geographically and in time and strong indications for a core microbiome. Five and fifteen OTUs were found in 100 and 99% of the individuals, respectively. This suggests that at this life stage the gut microbiota is under strong selection due to a combination of fish-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions.

Rational design of novel catalytic materials used to synthesize storable fuels via the CO hydrogenation reaction has recently received considerable attention. In this work, defect poor and defect rich 2D-MoS2 as well as 2D-MoS2 decorated with Mo clusters are employed as catalysts for the generation of acetylene (C2H2) via the CO hydrogenation reaction. Temperature programmed desorption is used to study the interaction of CO and H2 molecules with the MoS2 surface as well as the formation of reaction products. The experiments indicate the presence of four CO adsorption sites below room temperature and a competitive adsorption between the CO and H2 molecules. The investigations show that CO hydrogenation is not possible on defect poor MoS2 at low temperatures. However, on defect rich 2D-MoS2, small amounts of C2H2 are produced, which desorb from the surface at temperatures between 170 K and 250 K. A similar C2H2 signal is detected from defect poor 2D-MoS2 decorated with Mo clusters, which indicates that low coordinated Mo atoms on 2D-MoS2 are responsible for the formation of C2H2. Density functional theory investigations are performed to explore possible adsorption sites of CO and understand the formation mechanism of C2H2 on MoS2 and Mo7/MoS2. The theoretical investigation indicates a strong binding of C2H2 on the Mo sites of MoS2 preventing the direct desorption of C2H2 at low temperatures as observed experimentally. Instead, the theoretical results suggest that the experimental data are consistent with a mechanism in which CHO radical dimers lead to the formation of C2H2 that presents an exothermic desorption.

Metal-ligand complexation at surfaces utilizing redox-active ligands has been demonstrated to produce uniform single-site metals centers in regular coordination networks. Two key design considerations are the electron storage capacity of the ligand and the metal-coordinating pockets on the ligand. In an effort to move toward greater complexity in the systems, particularly dinuclear metal centers, we designed and synthesized tetraethyltetra-aza-anthraquinone, TAAQ, which has superior electron storage capabilities and four ligating pockets in a diverging geometry. Cyclic voltammetry studies of the free ligand demonstrate its ability to undergo up to a four-electron reduction. Solution-based studies with an analogous ligand, diethyldi-aza-anthraquinone, demonstrate these redox capabilities in a molecular environment. Surface studies conducted on the Au(111) surface demonstrate TAAQ's ability to complex with Fe. This complexation can be observed at different stoichiometric ratios of Fe:TAAQ as Fe 2p core level shifts in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Scanning tunneling microscopy experiments confirmed the formation of metal-organic coordination structures. The striking feature of these structures is their irregularity, which indicates the presence of multiple local binding motifs. Density functional theory calculations confirm several energetically accessible Fe:TAAQ isomers, which accounts for the non-uniformity of the chains.
