RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Pericoronitis of wisdom teeth along the jaw diffusion may be a rare diffusion pathway, which can cause osteomyelitis and maxillofacial space infection serious complications. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62-years-old male patient presented with swelling and discomfort of the right cheek for more than 1 year. The patient was previously healthy and denied various systemic medical histories. The patient's face was asymmetric, the right cheek was swollen, and the depressed edema was seen on the surface of the masseter area of the right parotid gland. Based on the preoperative cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging results, the initial diagnosis was: centralized osteomyelitis of the jaws. The surgical plan was minimally invasive extraction 48 and localized debridement of the lesion area. After three months of follow-up, the patient's symptoms were significantly improved without recurrence. DISCUSSION: Pericoronitis of wisdom teeth along the jaw diffusion is a rare diffusion pathway, which can lead to secondary jaw osteomyelitis, the treatment of which consists of lesion debridement, dead bone curettage and antibiotic therapy. CONCLUSION: Through literature review and summary of the diagnosis and treatment process of this case, such cases should be diagnosed as early as possible and conservative treatment should be actively used to avoid the occurrence of complications. In addition, the special diffusion pathway of this case may provide a new theoretical basis for the source of infection of central jaw osteomyelitis.

RESUMO

Obesity is an unhealthy condition associated with various diseases characterized by excess fat accumulation. However, in China, the prevalence of obesity is 14.1%, and it remains challenging to achieve weight loss or resolve this issue through clinical interventions. Sanghuangpours vaninii (SPV) is a nutritional fungus with multiple pharmacological activities and serves as an ideal dietary intervention for combating obesity. In this study, a long-term high-fat diet (HFD) was administered to induce obesity in mice. Different doses of SPV and the positive drug simvastatin (SV) were administered to mice to explore their potential anti-obesity effects. SPV regulated weight, serum lipids, and adipocyte size while inhibiting inflammation and hepatic steatosis. Compared with the vehicle-treated HFD-fed mice, the lowest decreases in total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were 9.72%, 9.29%, and 12.29%, respectively, and the lowest increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was 5.88% after treatment with different doses of SPV. With SPV treatment, the analysis of gut microbiota and serum lipids revealed a significant association between lipids and inflammation-related factors, specifically sphingomyelin. Moreover, Western blotting results showed that SPV regulated the toll-like receptor (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway in HFD-diet mice, which is related to inflammation and lipid metabolism. This research presents empirical proof of the impact of SPV therapy on obesity conditions.

RESUMO

The water-soluble neutral polysaccharide BEP2, with a molecular weight of 26.65 kDa, was isolated from the aqueous extract obtained from the fruiting bodies of Boletus aereus Bull. BEP2 primarily comprises Gal, with specific site substitutions speculated at partial positions, such as the substitution of -OCH3 at position H-3 or the branch at position C-2 including α-L-Fucp-(1→, α-D-Manp-(1 â†’ and α-D-Manp-(1 â†’ 3)-α-L-Fucp-(1 â†’ 6)-ß-D-Glcp-(1→. Treatment with BEP2 significantly enhanced learning, memory, and cognitive function, while concurrently reducing the accumulation of ß-amyloid and suppressing neuroinflammation within the brains of APP/PS1 mice. Based on the results of biochemical detection, gut microbiota analysis, and metabolomic profiling, we found that BEP2 significantly upregulated the abundance of two bacterial families while downregulation that of seven bacterial families within the intestinal ecosystem. Notably, the abundance of the S24-7 family was significantly increased. Treatment with BEP2 upregulated five metabolites, while downregulating three metabolites, including norepinephrine. Additionally, BEP2 decreased the levels of interleukin (IL)-1ß and IL-6, regulated the activities of microglial cells and astrocytes and increased the levels of the chemokine fractalkine (CX3CL1) and its receptor on microglia (CX3CR1), as well as that of transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1. These findings confirmed the suppressive effects of BEP2 on neuroinflammation.

RESUMO

Blue light (BL) irradiation has been a potentially efficient treatment for many kinds of tumors. In this study, a BL irradiation (centered at 453 nm in wavelength) was proposed to treat the common human liver cancer cell lines of SMMC-7721 and HepG2, examined by means of flow cytometry, western blot, fluorescence microscope assay. In comparison to control groups, the apoptosis and proliferation inhibition of both BL-treated cells are expressively enhanced by mitochondrial apoptosis. The mechanism of apoptosis is related to the more production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by BL and the corresponding changes in the expression of apoptosis-related Bcl-2, Bax and Bad proteins. In addition, the migration rate of the cancer cells could be reduced after BL irradiation. These results demonstrate that introducing BL irradiation is helpful to establish an effective and low toxicity strategy for the clinical treatment of liver tumors.

RESUMO

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) can be induced by excessive alcohol consumption, and has a worldwide age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of approximately 5.243%. Inonotus hispidus (Bull.) P. Karst. (IH) is a mushroom with pharmacological effects. In ALD mice, the hepatoprotective effects of IH were investigated. IH strongly ameliorated alcohol-induced pathological changes in the liver, including liver structures and its function-related indices. Intestinal microbiota and serum metabolomics analysis showed that IH altered the associated anti-inflammatory microbiota and metabolites. According to results obtained from Western blot, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), IH downregulated the levels of pro-inflammation factors interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), enhanced the expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and 15-hydroxprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), and inhibited the phosphorylated activation of Janus kinase (JAK) 1 and signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) 3, confirming the hepatoprotection of IH against alcohol damage via anti-inflammation. This study provides the experimental evidence for the hepatoprotective effects of IH in chronic ALD.

RESUMO

Obesity is frequently associated with dysregulated lipid metabolism and lipotoxicity. Inonotus hispidus (Bull.: Fr.) P. Karst (IH) is an edible and medicinal parasitic mushroom. In this study, after a systematic analysis of its nutritional ingredients, the regulatory effects of IH on lipid metabolism were investigated in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). In HFD-fed mice, IH reversed the pathological state of the liver and the three types of fat and significantly decreased the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and leptin (LEP) and increased the level of high-density liptein cholesterol (HDL-C) in serum. Meanwhile, IH ameliorated liver damage by reducing alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) levels in the liver and serum. Compared with HFD-fed mice, IH significantly modulated the gut microbiota, changed the relative abundances of microflora at different taxonomic levels, and regulated lipid levels. The results showed that 30 differential lipids were found. Results from Western blotting confirmed that IH regulated the nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway and oxidative stress. This study aimed to provide experimental evidence for the applicability of IH in obesity treatment.

RESUMO

Concrescence reveals a rare developmental anomaly in which two fully formed teeth are joined along the root surfaces by cementum, and generally occurs in maxillary molars, especially in a third molar and a supernumerary tooth. Very few cases have been reported about the concrescence of a third molar and a supernumerary fourth molar. Based on our available knowledge, this case report described a rare presentation in which concrescence is observed between a third molar and a supernumerary fourth molar in the mandible by diagnosing with cone-beam CT and histological examination.

RESUMO

Objectives: To characterize the microflora profile of supragingival biofilm in patients with and without full-crown prostheses. Methods: Plaque samples of full-crown prostheses and teeth in patients with porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, all-ceramic crowns, and no prostheses were collected (three patients per group), using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology to conduct DNA sequencing on the samples and using Qiime, R, and PICRUSt2 software to perform bioinformatics analyses and functional analyses on sequencing data. Results: In total, 110,209 valid sequences were obtained in the experiment, corresponding to 11 phyla and 120 genera. The predominant species shared by the three groups were phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Fusobacteria, and Proteobacteria and genera Rothia, Porphyromonas, Prevotella, Streptococcus, Veillonella, Leptotrichia, Neisseria, Citrobacter, and Pseudomonas. The species-difference analysis showed that genus Hameophilus significantly increased after the patient wore the dental prosthesis. Compared with the no-prosthesis samples, the functional analysis showed that cell motility increased in the samples from full-crown prostheses, while replication and repair, and translation decreased. Conclusions: This study reveals the changes in the oral microbial community of patients with full-crown prostheses, which could provide insights regarding the safety of materials for long-term use in the oral cavity.

RESUMO

Acute inflammation and hyperuricemia are associated with gouty arthritis. As an edible and therapeutic mushroom, Sanghuangporus vaninii (SV) has an inhibitory effect on tumorigenesis, and Inonotus hispidus (IH) exhibits anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In this study, uric acid (UA) and xanthine oxidase (XOD) levels in hyperuricemic mice were examined to determine the regulatory effects of SV and IH. SV and IH reversed the pathogenic state of elevated UA levels in the serum and reduced levels of XOD in the serum and liver of mice with hyperuricemia. SV and IH affected the inflammatory response in rats with acute gouty arthritis. Compared to vehicle-treated rats, monosodium urate crystals (MSU) increased the swelling ratio of the right ankle joints. SV and IH administration significantly reduced swelling and inflammatory cell infiltration. SV reduced the levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and chemokine ligand-2 (CCL-2), whereas IH reduced the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), CCL-2, and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), which were confirmed in articular soft tissues by immunohistochemistry. In summary, our data provide experimental evidence for the applicability of SV and IH in gouty arthritis and hyperuricemia treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of technique combination of implant-retented titanium lattice with decalcified dental matrix (DDM) implanting. METHODS: Six healthy male dogs (weighing of 10-20 kg) were randomly divided into 3 groups. All the premolars were extracted on both sides of the jaw in dogs. After 2 weeks, titanium lattice and implant were implanted in the maxillary premolar region with DDM on one side (experimental group), but without on the other side (control group) of each dog. After 4, 9 and 14 weeks, respectively, 2 animals were individually killed each time, and the samples were evaluated by general observation, X-ray examination, histological observation and histomorphometric analyses. RESULTS: General observation: Among the 6 dogs, there was no postoperative infection or death. The X-ray examination showed that the bone density of the experimental group was greater than the control group at 4 and 9 weeks, and had no significant difference as to the vicinity bone at 14 weeks. On the other hand, the density of the control group was very low under the titanium lattice and around the implant. The experimental group revealed a ridge augment of (1.93 +/- 0.24) mm, and control group (-1.02 +/- 1.20) mm (P < 0.05). Developed bone sponge could be found after 14 weeks. Histological observation showed that in the experimental group, the DDM surface was nearly absorbed at 4 weeks. A few new bones were formed at 9 weeks. The whole DDM was absorbed; the trabecular bone was thick and arranged regularly; and the intergradations of implant were observed at 14 weeks. In the control group, there were some inflammatory fibers around the neck of implant at 4 weeks. The inflammatory condition extended to the root of implant and the titanium lattice at 9 weeks. There was no newly-formed bone under the titanium lattice at 14 weeks. Histomorphometric analyses showed that the implant contact bone ratio approached 1:1, and showed no significant difference between the new bone fragment and former bone fragment in the experimental group. CONCLUSION: This augmentation of alveolar ridge evaluated by the study is applicable, but further study is necessary.
