RESUMO

Sepsis arises from an uncontrolled inflammatory response triggered by infection or stress, accompanied by alteration in cellular energy metabolism, and a strong correlation exists between these factors. Alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG), an intermediate product of the TCA cycle, has the potential to modulate the inflammatory response and is considered a crucial link between energy metabolism and inflammation. The scavenger receptor (SR-A5), a significant pattern recognition receptor, assumes a vital function in anti-inflammatory reactions. In the current investigation, we have successfully illustrated the ability of α-KG to mitigate inflammatory factors in the serum of septic mice and ameliorate tissue damage. Additionally, α-KG has been shown to modulate metabolic reprogramming and macrophage polarization. Moreover, our findings indicate that the regulatory influence of α-KG on sepsis is mediated through SR-A5. We also elucidated the mechanism by which α-KG regulates SR-A5 expression and found that α-KG reduced the N6-methyladenosine level of macrophages by up-regulating the m6A demethylase ALKBH5. α-KG plays a crucial role in inhibiting inflammation by regulating SR-A5 expression through m6A demethylation during sepsis. The outcomes of this research provide valuable insights into the relationship between energy metabolism and inflammation regulation, as well as the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism.

Numerous studies have shown that RNA plays an important role in the occurrence and development of diseases, and RNA-disease associations are not limited to noncoding RNAs in mammals but also exist for protein-coding RNAs. Furthermore, RNA-associated diseases are found across species including plants and nonmammals. To better analyze diseases at the RNA level and facilitate researchers in exploring the pathogenic mechanism of diseases, we decided to update and change MNDR v3.0 to RNADisease v4.0, a repository for RNA-disease association (http://www.rnadisease.org/ or http://www.rna-society.org/mndr/). Compared to the previous version, new features include: (i) expanded data sources and categories of species, RNA types, and diseases; (ii) the addition of a comprehensive analysis of RNAs from thousands of high-throughput sequencing data of cancer samples and normal samples; (iii) the addition of an RNA-disease enrichment tool and (iv) the addition of four RNA-disease prediction tools. In summary, RNADisease v4.0 provides a comprehensive and concise data resource of RNA-disease associations which contains a total of 3 428 058 RNA-disease entries covering 18 RNA types, 117 species and 4090 diseases to meet the needs of biological research and lay the foundation for future therapeutic applications of diseases.

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is one of the main diseases of wheat worldwide. Mianyang of Sichuan province in Southwest China is one of main regions for winter Pst inoculum production and spring epidemic and provides urediniospores for infecting wheat in the surrounding regions. Understanding the urediniospore dynamics is important to predict and manage stripe rust. In this study, spore trapping coupled with a TaqMan real-time quantitative PCR method was used to monitor airborne Pst urediniospores from December 2019 to December 2022 in Mianyang. Weather conditions (temperature, relative humidity, daily sunshine duration, and precipitation) were collected for the same period. These data were used to study the relationship of airborne urediniospore density with climatic conditions. The results showed that Pst urediniospores were captured all year round, and the annual peak of urediniospore densities occurred in the period from March to April in which the urediniospores accounted for the largest proportion of the annual total urediniospores. The density of urediniospores in the period of March to April was linearly related to the average sunshine duration of 20 days and average temperature of 15 days prior to the final day of a 7-day trapping period. This relationship needs to be tested in other regions where Pst can sporulate during the winter before it can be integrated with Pst infection conditions to predict rust development.

Establishing an RNA-associated interaction repository facilitates the system-level understanding of RNA functions. However, as these interactions are distributed throughout various resources, an essential prerequisite for effectively applying these data requires that they are deposited together and annotated with confidence scores. Hence, we have updated the RNA-associated interaction database RNAInter (RNA Interactome Database) to version 4.0, which is freely accessible at http://www.rnainter.org or http://www.rna-society.org/rnainter/. Compared with previous versions, the current RNAInter not only contains an enlarged data set, but also an updated confidence scoring system. The merits of this 4.0 version can be summarized in the following points: (i) a redefined confidence scoring system as achieved by integrating the trust of experimental evidence, the trust of the scientific community and the types of tissues/cells, (ii) a redesigned fully functional database that enables for a more rapid retrieval and browsing of interactions via an upgraded user-friendly interface and (iii) an update of entries to >47 million by manually mining the literature and integrating six database resources with evidence from experimental and computational sources. Overall, RNAInter will provide a more comprehensive and readily accessible RNA interactome platform to investigate the regulatory landscape of cellular RNAs.

In this study, a series of BiTeX (X = Cl, Br, I) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The synthesis process involved dissolving BiX3 and Te powder in toluene to identify the most efficient material for photocatalytic activity. The main objective of this approach is to facilitate the conversion of carbon dioxide into sustainable solar fuels, such as alcohols and hydrocarbons, offering an appealing solution to address environmental concerns and energy crises. The BiTeX photocatalysts demonstrated significant proficiency in converting CO2 into CH4, particularly BiTeCl exhibited a notable photocatalytic conversion rate of up to 0.51 µmolg-1h-1. The optimized BiTeX photocatalysts displayed a gradual and selective transition from CO2 to CH4, ultimately producing valuable hydrocarbons (C2+). Furthermore, owing to their ability to reduce CO2, these photocatalysts show promise as materials for mitigating environmental pollution.

Fungicide abuse leads to the emergence of fungicide-resistant fungal pathogens, thus posing a threat to agriculture and food safety. Here, we developed an isothermal amplification refractory mutation system (termed iARMS) allowing us to resolve genetic mutations, enabling rapid, sensitive, and potentially field-applicable detection of fungicide-resistant crop fungal pathogens. iARMS yielded a limit of detection of 25 aM via a cascade signal amplification strategy of recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and Cas12a-mediated collateral cleavage at 37 °C within 40 min. Specificity for fungicide-resistant Puccinia striiformis (P. striiformis) detection was guaranteed by RPA primers and the flexible sequence of gRNA. The iARMS assay allowed us to detect as low as 0.1% cyp51-mutated P. striiformis that showed resistance to the demethylase inhibitor (DMI), which was 50 times more sensitive than the sequencing techniques. Thus, it is promising for the discovery of rare fungicide-resistant isolates. We applied iARMS to investigate the emergence of fungicide-resistant P. striiformis in western China and found that its proportion was over 50% in Qinghai, Sichuan, and Xinjiang Province. iARMS can serve as a molecular diagnostic tool for crop diseases and facilitate precision plant disease management.

Curcumin is a natural acidic polyphenol extracted from turmeric with a wide range of biological and pharmacological effects. However, the application of curcumin for animal production and human life is limited by a low oral bioavailability. In this study, natural curcumin was prepared for the curcumin ß-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (CUR-ß-CD), curcumin solid dispersion (CUR-PEG-6000), and curcumin phospholipid complex (CUR-HSPC) using co-precipitation, melting, and solvent methods, respectively. Curcumin complex formations were monitored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) techniques via the shifts in the microscopic structure, molecular structure, and crystalline state. Subsequently, twenty-four female beagle dogs were randomly divided into four groups to receive unmodified curcumin and three other curcumin preparations. The validated UPLC-MS assay was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic and bioavailability studies of curcumin in beagle dog plasma, which were collected after dosing at 0 min (predose), 5 min, 15 min, 30 min, 40 min, 50 min, 1.5 h, 3 h, 4.5 h, 5.5 h, 6 h, 6.5 h, 9 h, and 24 h. The relative bioavailabilities of CUR-ß-CD, CUR-PEG-6000, and CUR-HSPC were 231.94%, 272.37%, and 196.42%, respectively. This confirmed that CUR-ß-CD, CUR-HSPC, and especially CUR-PEG-6000 could effectively improve the bioavailability of curcumin.

Natural products--polyoxygenated cyclohexenes exhibited potent anti-tumor activity, such as zeylenone, which is a natural product isolated from Uvaria grandiflora Roxb. This article will attempt to establish a gram-scale synthesis method of (+)-zeylenone and explain the structure-activity relationship of this kind of compound. Total synthesis of (+)-zeylenone was completed in 13 steps with quinic acid as the starting material in 9.8% overall yield. The highlight of the route was the control of the three carbon's chirality by single step dihydroxylation. In addition, different kinds of derivatives were designed and synthesized. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8) assay was used for evaluating antitumor activity against three human cancer cell lines. The structure--activity relationship suggested that compounds with both absolute configurations exhibited tumor-suppressive effects. Moreover, hydroxyls at the C-1/C-2 position were crucial to the activity, and the esterification of large groups at C-1 hydroxyl eliminated the activity. Hydroxyl at the C-3 position was also important as proper ester substituent could increase the potency.

The therapeutic effects of cryotherapy on skin and subcutaneous tumors in dogs were retrospectively studied in 20 dogs with 37 tumor lesions, of which 30 were benign and seven were malignant. Our results showed that during follow-up, 94.5% of lesions were completely exfoliated, without relapse or metastasis (mean time = 245.7 days). To investigate the effects of cryotherapy, we compared histopathological observations and microstructural changes in healthy tissues and tumor tissues, before and after cryotherapy. After cryotherapy, both normal skin and tumor tissue exhibited edema and hyperemia, with inflammatory cell infiltration. The cell nuclei exhibited pyknosis, disintegration and necrosis, and tight junctions were decreased in size. Cell morphology was varied, along with fragmented cell nuclear envelopes, crenulated nuclei and indistinct and necrotic intracellular organelles. Vacuoles were apparent in the cytoplasm and intercellular desmosomes were absent. These observations suggested that cryosurgery inhibited skin and subcutaneous tumors via cold-induced injury to cells, and cellular microenvironment changes induced by apoptosis. The results suggested that cryosurgery prevented skin and subcutaneous tumors via cold-induced injury to cells, and cellular microenvironment changes induced by apoptosis. We believe these data will provide general cryotherapy guidance to scientists and veterinary surgeons.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to anterior urethral strictures of Chinese urologists and to compare with developed countries and the American Urologic Association guidelines. METHODS: Anonymous questionnaires were distributed to members of Official Wechat Account of urology from March 19, 2020 to April 10, 2020. Descriptive and multiple correspondence analysis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: A total of 1276 online questionnaires were received. The response rate was 21.7% (1276/5878). The most common diagnostic methods for anterior urethral stricture were urethrography (90.7%) and urethrocystoscopy (85.4%), while urethral dilation (92.3%) and internal urethrotomy (60.1%) were the main therapeutic procedures. End-to-end urethroplasty (45.2%) was the most common open surgery, followed by skin flap urethroplasty (14.9%) and free graft urethroplasty (12.4%). 76.2% of urologists used urethroplasty only after the failure of minimally invasive surgery (reconstructive ladder treatment strategy). Furthermore, middle-aged or elderly urologists who had attended trainings, had senior practice roles, and who utilized a reconstructive ladder treatment approach were most likely to perform urethroplasties. CONCLUSIONS: Anterior urethral stricture treatment in China is still dominated by minimally invasive surgery, with most urologists using the reconstructive ladder treatment strategy. In general, the overall diagnostic and therapeutic strategies were similar between China and developed countries, with some deviations from the American Urologic Association guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The high signal of paravertebral muscle (PVM) on T2-weighted image (T2WI) is usually considered to be fatty degeneration. However, it is difficult to distinguish inflammatory edema from fatty degeneration on T2WI. The purpose of this study was to identify different types of PVM high signal in patients with low back pain (LBP) through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and histology. METHODS: Seventy patients with LBP underwent MRI. The signal change of multifidus both on T2WI and fat suppression image (FSI) was quantified by Image J. Furthermore, 25 of the 70 patients underwent surgery for degenerative lumbar disease and their multifidus were obtained during the operation. Histological analysis of the samples was performed by HE staining. RESULT: Three types of PVM signal changes were identified from the MRI. Type 1 (n = 36) indicated fatty degeneration characterized by a high signal on T2WI and low signal on FSI. High signal on both T2WI and FSI, signifying type 2 meant inflammatory edema (n = 9). Type 3 (n = 25) showed high signal on T2WI and partial signal suppression on FSI, which meant a combination of fatty degeneration and inflammatory edema. Histological results were consistent with MRI. Among the 25 patients who underwent surgery, type 1 (n = 14) showed adipocytes infiltration, type 2 (n = 3) showed inflammatory cells infiltration and type 3 (n = 8) showed adipocytes and inflammatory cells infiltration. CONCLUSION: From our results, there are three types of pathological changes in patients with PVM degeneration, which may help to decide on targeted treatments for LBP.

Random skin flap is widely used in plastic surgery. However, flap necrosis caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury limits its clinical applications. Apigenin, a naturally occurring flavonoid mainly derived from plants, facilitates flap survival. In this study, we explored the effects of apigenin on flap survival and the underlying mechanisms. A total of 54 mice having a dorsal random flap model were randomly divided into control, apigenin, and apigenin +3-methyladenine groups. These groups were treated with dimethyl sulfoxide solution, apigenin, and apigenin +3-methyladenine, respectively. The animals were then euthanized to assess angiogenesis, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and autophagy levels through histological and protein analyses. Apigenin promotes survival of the skin flap area and reduces tissue edema. In addition, apigenin enhanced angiogenesis, attenuated apoptosis, alleviated oxidative stress, and activated autophagy. Interestingly, 3-methyladenine reversed the effects of apigenin on flap survival, angiogenesis, apoptosis, and oxidative stress through inhibition of autophagy. The findings of this study show that apigenin promotes angiogenesis, inhibits cell apoptosis, and lowers oxidative stress by mediating autophagy, thus the improving survival rate of random skin flaps.

PURPOSE: Using a quick electroretinography (ERG) protocol for rapid assessment of the retinal function of wild giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) performed in field conditions to demonstrate the range of ERG recordings in giant pandas of unknown retinal status. ANIMALS STUDIED: Nine free range giant pandas. PROCEDURE: All the giant pandas were anesthetized using an intramuscular dexMTZ injection, which is a combination of dexmedetomidine and tiletamine-zolazepam. After 20 mins of dark adaptation, scotopic ERGs were obtained by using three flash intensities: -25 dB (0.0087 cd·s/m2 ), 0 dB (2.75 cd·s/m2 ), and +5 dB (8.7 cd·s/m2 ). Next, photopic ERGs were acquired using a single flash protocol with a flash intensity of 3.0 cd·s/m2 after 10 minutes of light adaptation. RESULTS: In scotopic ERG at 0.0087 cd·s/m2 , mean b-wave amplitude and peak time were 82.26 µV (SD ± 16.65 and 95% CI 68.33-96.18) and 66.97 ms (SD ± 10.86 and 95% CI 57.90-76.05), respectively. This flash intensity was below a-wave threshold and resulted in b waves with greater peak times compared to those with higher intensities. At 2.75 cd·s/m2 , the mean a-wave amplitude and peak time were 53.95 µV (SD ± 11.63 and 95% CI 44.23-63.67) and 16.13 ms (SD ± 2.62 and 95% CI 13.94-18.31), and mean b-wave amplitude and peak time were 119.57 µV (SD ± 15.54 and 95% CI 106.57-132.56) and 32.00 ms (SD ± 6.47 and 95% CI 26.59-37.41). At 8.7 cd·s/m2 , the mean a-wave amplitude and peak time were 58.85 µV (SD ± 14.90 and 95% CI 46.39-71.31) and 15.59 ms (SD ± 2.63 and 95% CI 13.40-17.79), and the mean b-wave amplitude and peak time were 132.97 µV (SD ± 22.11 and 95% CI 114.48-151.46) and 32.66 ms (SD ± 6.87 and 95% CI 26.91-38.40). In photopic ERG at 2.75 cd·s/m2 , the mean a-wave amplitude and peak time were 62.08 µV (SD ± 16.61 and 95% CI 48.19-75.97) and 16.28 ms (SD ± 0.90 and 95% CI 15.53-17.03), and the mean b-wave amplitude and peak time were 214.93 µV (SD ± 70.41 and 95% CI 156.07-273.80) and 33.09 ms (SD ± 1.27 and 95% CI 32.03-34.15). CONCLUSION: Using a portable ERG system with a brief ERG protocol to perform electroretinographies in wild giant pandas is a practical, useful, and reliable method for the rapid assessment of their retinal function.

The first systematic synthesis of bismuth oxychloride/bismuth oxybromide/graphitic carbon nitride (BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4) nano-composites used a controlled hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and characteristic of BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4 photocatalyst were measured by XRD, UV-vis-DRS, FT-IR, FE-TEM, FE-SEM-EDS, PL, BET, HR-XPS and EPR. Under visible light irradiation, the photodegradation activity was evaluated for the decolorization of crystal violet (CV) and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (2-HBA) in aqueous solution. The catalytic performance showed that, when using sample BB2C1-4-250-30 wt% g-C3N4 composite as a photocatalyst, the best reaction-rate-constant (k) was 0.071 h-1. It was 1.5 times higher than the k value of BB2C1-4-250 as a photocatalyst. From the scavenging effect of various scavengers, the results of EPR showed that reactive OH was the main scavenger, while O2-, h+ and 1O2 were the second scavenger in CV degradation. In this study, a possible photodegradation mechanism was proposed and discussed. In this work, our method of BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4 preparation could be used for future mass production and the BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4 composite materials could be applied to the environmental pollution control in future.

Cartilage endplate (CEP) degeneration has been considered as one of important factors related to intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). Previous researches have showed that Rac1 played a pivotal role in chondrocyte differentiation. However, the effect of Rac1 during the process of CEP degeneration remains unclear. Herein, we explored the effect of Rac1 on CEP degeneration and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanism. We found expression of Rac1-GTP increased in human-degenerated CEP tissue and IL-1ß-stimulated rat endplate chondrocytes (EPCs). Our study revealed that Rac1 inhibitor NSC23766 treatment promoted the expression of collagen II, aggrecan and Sox-9, and decreased the expression of ADTAMTS5 and MMP13 in IL-1ß-stimulated rat EPCs. Moreover, we also found that NSC23766 could suppress the activation of Wnt/ß-catenin pathway, suggesting that the beneficial effects of Rac1 inhibition in EPCs are mediated through the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling. Besides, puncture-induced rats models showed that NSC23766 played a protective role on CEP and disc degeneration. Collectively, these findings demonstrated that Rac1 inhibition delayed the EPCs degeneration and its potential mechanism may be associated with Wnt/ß-catenin pathway regulation, which may help us better understand the association between Rac1 and CEP degeneration and provide a promising strategy for delaying the progression of IVDD.

PURPOSE: To establish a psychometric validated pelvic fracture-urethral injury postoperative erectile function patient reported outcome measure (PFUI pEF PROM). We also aim to explore PFUI patients' potential classification and suitable postoperative erectile function assessment pattern. METHODS: A total of 93 PFUI patients who treated by excision and primary anastomotic (EPA) urethroplasty from January 2020 to August 2022 were enrolled to this study. Patients who had intercourse completed the IIEF-5, those who had sexual stimulation other than intercourse finished PFUI pEF PROM, and those who performed both completed the IIEF-5, and PFUI pEF PROM. Erection Hardness Score (EHS) was completed by all patients. This PROM was performed psychometric validation and used to find PFUI patients potential classification through latent class analysis. Then, we determined the cut-off value though receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve and performed univariate analysis subgroups feature. RESULTS: The PFUI pEF PROM demonstrated high reliability and validity with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.928. It correlated significantly with IIEF-5 (r = 0.550, p < 0.001) and EHS (r = 0.909, p < 0.001). The latent class analysis identified three patient subgroups, with 14.5 as the subgroup cut-off value. Urethral stricture length, IIEF-5, and EHS score were identified as influence factors for maximal erection potential. An assessment pattern combining IIEF-5, EHS, and the PFUI pEF PROM covered 92.5% of patients. CONCLUSION: This PROM effectively addresses the current limitation in assessing erectile function in PFUI patients. This study provides a promising tool for stratified assessment, prediction erection recovery, and treatment guidance in the PFUI Erectile dysfunction field.

The spatter generated by the interaction between laser and powder during Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Melting (PBF-LM) can significantly affect the quality of printed parts. A high-speed camera is used to observe the dynamic process of spatter's behavior under different layer thickness and laser powers during the printing process, and to analyze the printed samples' surface roughness, microstructure, and mechanical properties. In terms of spatter image processing, employing an optical flow approach to track and quantify the number of spatters efficiently eliminates statistical redundancy and improves statistical correctness. It is found that under the same laser power, the number of spatters produced by the laser scan direction with the gas flow (LSD-W) is more than that by the laser scan direction against the gas flow (LSD-A), and the number of spatters produced increases with the increase of laser power. Analyzing the mechanical properties and surface roughness of the printed samples under different process parameters quantitatively reveals that differences in the spatter amount generated under different process parameters in the PBF-LM process is not the determining factor affecting the difference in tensile strength of printed parts. During LSD-W, the number of spatters generated at laser power of 170 W and layer thickness of 0.03 mm is 87, and the tensile strength of the printed sample is 618 MPa. During LSD-W, the number of spatters generated at laser power of 320 W and layer thickness of 0.05 mm is 211, and the tensile strength of the printed sample is 680 MPa. Instead, spatter generation has a more direct impact on the surface roughness of printed parts. The layer thickness is 0.03 mm, the laser power is 170 W, and (Ra = 2.372 µm) is the surface roughness of the sample. The layer thickness is 0.05 mm, the laser power is 320 W, and (Ra = 8.163 µm) is the surface roughness of the sample.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Atractylodis Rhizoma is extensively employed in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of skin and gastrointestinal ailments. Its active components have been proven to demonstrate numerous beneficial properties, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-ulcer activities. Furthermore, the volatile oil from Atractylodis Rhizoma (VOAR) has been reported to effectively inhibit and eradicate pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Of particular concern is Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, the predominant pathogen responsible for canine pyoderma, whose increasing antimicrobial resistance poses a serious public health threat. VOAR merits further investigation regarding its antibacterial potential against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aims to verify the in vitro antibacterial activity of VOAR against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. And a superficial skin infection model in mice was established to assess the in vivo therapeutic effect of VOAR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty strains of S. pseudintermedius were isolated from dogs with pyoderma, and the drug resistance was analyzed by disc diffusion method. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of VOAR were determined through the broth dilution method. The growth curve of bacteria in a culture medium containing VOAR was monitored using a UV spectrophotometer. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the effects of VOAR on the microstructure of S. pseudintermedius. The impact of VOAR on the antibiotic resistance of S. pseudintermedius was assessed using the disc diffusion method. Twenty mice were randomly divided into four groups: the control group, the physiological saline group, the VOAR group, and the amikacin group. With the exception of the control group, the skin barrier of mice was disrupted by tap stripping, and the mice were subsequently inoculated with S. pseudintermedius to establish a superficial skin infection model. The modeled mice were treated with normal saline, VOAR, and amikacin for 5 days. Following the treatment period, the therapeutic effect of each group was evaluated based on the measures of body weight, skin symptoms, tissue bacterial load, tissue IL-6 content, and histopathological changes. RESULTS: The MIC and MBC of VOAR against 30 clinical isolates of S. pseudintermedius were found to be 0.005425% and 0.016875%, respectively. VOAR could exhibit the ability to delay the entry of bacteria into the logarithmic growth phase, disrupt the bacterial structure, and enhance the antibacterial zone in conjunction with antibiotic drugs. In the superficial skin infection model mice, VOAR significantly reduced the scores for skin redness (P < 0.0001), scab formation (P < 0.0001), and wrinkles (P < 0.0001). Moreover, VOAR markedly reduced the bacterial load (P < 0.001) and IL-6 content (P < 0.0001) in the skin tissues of mice. Histopathological observations revealed that the full-layer skin structure in the VOAR group was more complete, with clearer skin layers, and showed significant improvement in inflammatory cell infiltration and fibroblast proliferation compared to other groups. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that VOAR effectively inhibits and eradicates Staphylococcus pseudintermedius in vitro while also enhancing the pathogen's sensitivity to antibiotics. Moreover, VOAR exhibits a pronounced therapeutic effect in the superficial skin infection model mice.

Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) staging scans are critical for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). We aimed to evaluate the application value of LAVA-Flex and T1WI-IDEAL sequences in MRI staging scans. Methods: Eighty-four newly diagnosed NPC patients underwent both LAVA-Flex and T1WI-IDEAL sequences during MRI examinations. Two radiologists independently scored the acquisitions of image quality, fat suppression quality, artifacts, vascular and nerve display. The obtained scores were compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. According to the signal intensity (SI) measurements, the uniformity of fat suppression, contrast between tumor lesions and subcutaneous fat tissue, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were compared by the paired t-test. Results: Compared to the T1WI-IDEAL sequence, LAVA-Flex exhibited fewer artifacts (P<0.05), better visualization of nerves and vessels (P<0.05), and performed superior in the fat contrast ratio of the primary lesion and metastatic lymph nodes (0.80 vs. 0.52, 0.81 vs. 0.56, separately, P<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in overall image quality, tumor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), muscle SNR, and the detection rate of lesions between the two sequences (P>0.05). T1WI-IDEAL was superior to LAVA-Flex in the evaluation of fat suppression uniformity (P<0.05). Discussion: LAVA-Flex sequence provides satisfactory image quality and better visualization of nerves and vessels for NPC with shorter scanning times.

Macroscopic fibres assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets are new and impressing type of fibre materials besides those from one-dimensional (1D) polymers, such as graphene fibres. However, the preparation and property-enhancing technologies of these fibres follow those from 1D polymers by improving the orientation along the fibre axis, leading to non-optimized microstructures and low integrated performances. Here, we show a concept of bidirectionally promoting the assembly order, making graphene fibres achieve synergistically improved mechanical and thermal properties. Concentric arrangement of graphene oxide sheets in the cross-section and alignment along fibre axis are realized by multiple shear-flow fields, which bidirectionally promotes the sheet-order of graphene sheets in solid fibres, generates densified and crystalline graphitic structures, and produces graphene fibres with ultrahigh modulus (901 GPa) and thermal conductivity (1660 W m-1 K-1). We believe that the concept would enhance both scientific and technological cognition of the assembly process of 2D nanosheets.
