RESUMO

This study describes the preparation of a lignin-based expandable flame retardant (Lignin-N-DOPO) using grafting melamine and covering 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) using the Mannich reaction. Then, through in situ growth, a metal-organic framework (MOF) HKUST-1 (e.g., Cu3(BTC)2, BTC = benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate)/lignin-based expandable flame retardant (F-lignin@HKUST-1) was created. Before that, lignin epoxy resin containing phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) components had been created by combining epoxy resin (EP) with F-lignin@HKUST-1. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to examine the thermal characteristics of epoxy resin (EP) composite. The findings indicate that the thermal stability of EP is significantly affected by the presence of F-lignin@HKUST-1. Last but not least, the activation energy (E) of EP/15% F-lignin@HKUST-1 was examined using four different techniques, including the Kissinger-SY iteration method, the Ozawa-SY iteration method, the Lee-Beck approximation-iteration method, and the Gorbatchev approximation-iteration method. It was discovered that the activation energy was significantly higher than that of lignin. Higher activation energy suggests that F-lignin@HKUST-1 pyrolysis requires more energy from the environment, which will be significant about the application of lignin-based flame retardants.

OBJECTIVE: Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) was proved to play an important role in numerous neurodevelopmental processes. In our study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the NRG1 gene polymorphism and the cognitive function of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) complicated with post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) before and after the psychological intervention. METHODS: Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), and Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) were used for cognitive function assessment. Serum level of NRG1 was detected by ELISA, and the correlation between NRG1 level and cognitive function was analyzed. The difference of cognitive function score of patients with HCC complicated with PTSD before and after psychological intervention was compared, and the relationship between rs35753505 and rs3924999 polymorphism with the score was analyzed. RESULTS: Patients with HCC complicated with PTSD showed decreased serum NRG1 level. NRG1 levels of patients in the HCC + PTSD group were positively correlated with MMSE, MoCA, and LOTCA scores. In rs35753505, the CC genotype was a risk factor for the occurrence of PTSD in patients with HCC, while in rs3924999, the GG genotype was a risk factor for the occurrence of PTSD in patients with HCC. After psychological intervention, the CC genotype at rs35753505 and the GG genotype at rs3924999 were susceptible genotypes. CONCLUSION: CC genotype at rs35753505 and GG genotype at rs3924999 of NRG1 gene increased the risk of PTSD in patients with HCC. CC and GG genotypes were susceptible after psychological intervention.

Delayed wound healing is a common and serious complication in diabetic patients, especially the slow healing of foot ulcers, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients and is also the most important risk factor for lower limb amputation. The multifunctional novel dressing prepared by loading the polymer nanofibers with anti-inflammatory and prohealing plant extracts can promote the wound repair of these ulcers by electrospinning technology. Liposomes are nanoparticles prepared from phospholipids and have been widely used as drug delivery systems. Liposomes can be combined with electrospun nanofibrous webs to facilitate local and sustained delivery of loaded bioactive substances. In this study, liposomes were prepared with astragaloside IV (AS) by employing a modified ethanol injection method and conducting the physical and chemical characterization (e.g., the particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and entrapment efficiency). Astragalus polysaccharides were extracted from Astragalus membranaceus. Subsequently, we prepared the electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/astragalus polysaccharide (APS)/astragaloside IV (AS) nanofibers. The morphology of the produced ASL/APS/PVA, APS/PVA, and PVA nanofibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and it turns out that the addition of astragalus extract made the fiber diameter smaller and the fibers arranged neatly with no dripping. An induced diabetic rat model was built, and a diabetic ulcer model was built by total cortical resection to assess the prorepair ability of the prepared nanofibers. According to in vivo animal experiments, the nanofibrous membrane loaded with APS and ASL was reported to inhibit the occurrence of wound inflammation, enhance the deposition of collagen fibers (P < 0.05) and the repair of regenerated epithelium (P < 0.05), and effectively strengthen the wound healing of diabetic rats (P < 0.05). In brief, PVA-loaded APS/ASL nanofibrous membranes refer to a prominent wound healing dressing material, which can effectively facilitate the healing of diabetic wounds, and they are demonstrated to be highly promising for application in diabetic wound dressings and tissue engineering.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) can accelerate recovery, improve pelvic lymph node dissection effects, and reduce serum tumor marker tumor specific growth factor (TSGF) levels in patients with bladder cancer. METHODS: A total of 96 patients with bladder cancer admitted to our hospital were recruited as the research participants. Among them, 43 patients who adopted radical cystectomy were enrolled in the control group (CG), and 53 patients treated with RARC were included in the research group (RG). The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative bowel recovery time, gastrointestinal function recovery, complication rate, clinical efficacy, changes of TSGF levels before and after operation, postoperative satisfaction and quality of life were observed. RESULTS: Compared with the CG, patients in the RG experienced longer operation times (P<0.05), less intraoperative blood loss (P<0.05), and faster time to bowel recovery, anal exhaust, and anal defecation (P<0.05); moreover, the RG had a lower incidence rate of complications (P=0.025) and TSGF levels (P<0.05), higher effective cure rate (P=0.023) and satisfaction degree (P=0.048), as well as superior quality of life scores in six dimensions (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The application of RARC can accelerate the recovery of patients with bladder cancer, improve the pelvic lymph node dissection effects, and reduce the serum levels of tumor marker TSGF.

BACKGROUND: Patients with initially unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) could achieve survival benefit from successful conversion therapy. Recently, Tumor Burden Score (TBS) was proposed as a valuable index to predict outcome following resection of CRLM. The study is aimed to investigate the association of TBS with conversion outcome. METHODS: A total of 234 patients who underwent first-line treatment in our center were enrolled as training cohort. The validation cohort was developed from 89 patients in our previous study. Cut-off value of TBS was calculated to stratify patients into two groups. Significance test and logistic regression model were used to examine the prediction value of TBS for conversion outcome after first-line systemic therapy. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazard model were applied to assess the prognostic value of TBS. RESULTS: TBS showed good discriminatory power [area under curve (AUC) 0.726, p < 0.001] with cut-off value defined as 14.3 in training cohort, which was validated in the validation cohort. Increasing TBS was related to adverse chemotherapy response and conversion outcome. Low TBS group had three times higher conversion rate than that in high TBS group (57.3% versus 19.0%, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis indicated that high TBS [odds ratio (OR) = 3.676, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.671-8.429, p = 0.002], first-line treatment response as stable disease (SD) or progressive disease (PD) (OR = 9.247; 95% CI 4.736-18.846, p < 0.001), and absence of targeted therapy (OR = 2.453, 95% CI 1.139-5.455, p = 0.024) were three independent risk factors for failure conversion outcome. High TBS was significantly associated with conversion outcome whatever chemotherapy response, addition of targeted therapy, and Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS) status. High TBS was also associated with worse overall survival. CONCLUSION: TBS should be applied in clinical practice to predict conversion outcome in patients with initially unresectable CRLM.

Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) is one of the most widely used tumor markers in gastrointestinal cancer. However, serum CA19-9 is not a recommended routine measurement in colon cancer. In this study, we evaluated the value of the preoperative serum CA19-9 level for the prediction of postoperative prognosis in stage III colon cancer. The medical records of 367 consecutive patients with stage III colon cancer who underwent curative resection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with oxaliplatin and capecitabine between December 2007 and April 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. We determined the optimal cutoff value of CA19-9 for 3-year recurrence using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) method. Differences in disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) rates stratified by CA19-9 level were compared by using Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify prognostic variables for DFS and OS. The statistically determined best cutoff value for CA19-9 was 24 U/ml. High CA19-9 levels (> 24 U/ml) were significantly associated with poorly differentiated tumors, abnormal carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, and a high cumulative incidence of lung metastasis. Additionally, compared with low CA19-9 levels, high preoperative CA19-9 levels were associated with inferior 3-year DFS and OS rates, especially for high-risk patients (T4Nany or TanyN2). Multivariate analyses revealed that CA19-9 was an independent factor associated with both DFS (hazard ratio [HR], 2.248; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.393-3.628; P = 0.001) and OS (HR: 2.081; 95% CI: 1.137-3.808; P = 0.017). The results of this study showed that high levels of preoperative serum CA19-9 indicated a worse prognostic outcome for stage III colon cancer patients. An early follow-up protocol to assess lung metastasis and a full course of adjuvant chemotherapy should be used for these patients.

ABSTRACT Calla lily chlorotic spot virus (CCSV) isolated from central Taiwan was recently identified as a tospovirus serologically but distantly related to Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV). To clarify the serological relationship between the two viruses, rabbit polyclonal antibody (PAb) to CCSV and mouse monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to WSMoV NP or CCSV NP were produced in this investigation, using purified nucleocapsid protein (NP) as immunogens. The PAb to CCSV NP reacted stronger with the homologous antigen than with the heterologous antigen, with much lower A(405) readings in indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and low-intensity banding in immunoblotting. MAbs produced to CCSV NP or WSMoV NP reacted specifically with the homologous antigens but not with the heterologous antigens in both ELISA and immunoblot analyses. The CCSV S RNA was determined to be 3,172 nucleotides in length, with an inverted repeat at the 5' and 3' ends and two open reading frames encoding the NP and a nonstructural (NSs) protein in an ambisense arrangement. A typical 3'-terminal sequence (5'-AUUGCUCU-3') that is shared by all members of the genus Tospovirus also is present in the CCSV S RNA. The CCSV NP and NSs protein share low amino acid identities of 20.1 to 65.1% and 19.9 to 66.1%, respectively, with those of reported tospoviruses. Phylogenetic dendrogram analysis indicates that CCSV is a distinct member in the genus Tospovirus. The results provide evidence that CCSV is a new species in the genus Tospovirus and belongs to WSMoV serogroup.
