RESUMO

In this work, composite coatings of chitosan and silver nanoparticles were presented as an antibacterial coating for orthopedic implants. Coatings were deposited on AISI 304L using the galvanic deposition method. In galvanic deposition, the difference of the electrochemical redox potential between two metals (the substrate and a sacrificial anode) has the pivotal role in the process. In the coupling of these two metals a spontaneous redox reaction occurs and thus no external power supply is necessary. Using this process, a uniform deposition on the exposed area and a good adherence of the composite coating on the metallic substrate were achieved. Physical-chemical characterizations were carried out to evaluate morphology, chemical composition, and the presence of silver nanoparticles. These characterizations have shown the deposition of coatings with homogenous and porous surface structures with silver nanoparticles incorporated and distributed into the polymeric matrix. Corrosion tests were also carried out in a simulated body fluid at 37 °C in order to simulate the same physiological conditions. Corrosion potential and corrosion current density were obtained from the polarization curves by Tafel extrapolation. The results show an improvement in protection against corrosion phenomena compared to bare AISI 304L. Furthermore, the ability of the coating to release the Ag+ was evaluated in the simulated body fluid at 37 °C and it was found that the release mechanism switches from anomalous to diffusion controlled after 3 h.

RESUMO

Interface tissue engineering (ITE) is used to repair or regenerate interface living tissue such as for instance bone and cartilage. This kind of tissues present natural different properties from a biological and mechanical point of view. With the aim to imitating the natural gradient occurring in the bone-cartilage tissue, several technologies and methods have been proposed over recent years in order to develop polymeric functionally graded scaffolds (FGS). In this study three-layered scaffolds with a pore size gradient were developed by melt mixing polylactic acid (PLA) and two water-soluble porogen agents: sodium chloride (NaCl) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Pore dimensions were controlled by NaCl granulometry while PEG solvation created a micropores network within the devices. Scaffolds were characterized from a morphological and mechanical point of view in order to find a correlation between the preparation method, the pore architecture and compressive mechanical behavior. Biological tests were also performed in order to study the effect of pore size gradient on the permeation of different cell lines in co-culture. To imitate the physiological work condition, compressive tests were also performed in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution at 37°C. The presented preparation method permitted to prepare three-layered scaffolds with high control of porosity and pore size distribution. Furthermore mechanical behaviors were found to be strongly affected by pore architecture of tested devices as well as the permeation of osteoblast and fibroblast in-vitro.

RESUMO

Image processing permits scientists to investigate morphological properties of three-dimensional structures starting from their bi-dimensional gray-scale representation. In many cases porous structure with complex architecture has to be designed in order to attempt specific properties such in the case of scaffold for tissue engineering. Traditional morphological characterization, like scanning electron microscopy, should be coupled with quantitative information such as pore size distribution (PSD) in order to get a deeper understanding of the influence of the porous structure on tissue regeneration processes and on other related applications, it is remarkable to study a quantitative analysis of porosity and of pores dimension. In this work it was developed as a software able to accomplish the segmentation of images containing pores of any geometry in a semi-automatic way with the aim to measure the PSD. Case study constituted by PLA porous scaffolds with different pore size was adopted. Results indicate that image processing methods well fit the pore size features of PLA scaffolds, overcoming the limits of the more invasive porosimetry techniques.

RESUMO

Although many investigators have evaluated the technical variability of quantitative angiographic techniques used to study atherosclerosis regression in native coronary arteries, few have studied the variability inherent in repeated studies of atherosclerotic saphenous vein grafts. This study describes 2 studies performed during the course of the Post Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Clinical Trial that were designed to assess the reproducibility of: (1) repeated angiographic views within a short time period; and (2) reproducibility of the total process of quantitative analysis of saphenous vein graft angiograms. Statistical methods are described that provide a more meaningful assessment of the impact of measurement variability in the analytic process versus the variability related to changes induced by pharmacologic interventions. One such method, the increase in standard deviation (SD) among patients (ISDP), showed that repeated angiographic views increased the variability of calculation of lesion minimal diameter by 1.5%, whereas the ISDP for repetition of the entire process of quantitative angiographic readings increased variability 6.4%. These data from the Post CABG trial reveal that technical variability is small and has negligible impact on the conclusions of the study.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess demographics, job characteristics, geographical regions, resources and commitment, which influence dental hygienists seeking international clinical practice employment opportunities. METHODS: Questionnaires were mailed to a convenience sample of members of the Dental Hygienists' Association of the City of New York. Statistical analyses were conducted and frequency distributions and relationships between variables were calculated. RESULTS: Seventy-two percent of respondents reported that they are or may be interested in working overseas. Italy and Spain (67%) were the regions of most interest. Salary (65%) was cited as the most influencing factor in selection, whereas non-compliance with the equivalency to Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards (74%) was the most frequently perceived barrier. Multiple language fluency was statistically significant (0.003) regarding interest in overseas employment. CONCLUSION: Policy makers, employers and educators need to be aware of these findings should recruitment be a possibility to render urgently needed oral hygiene care in regions where there is a perceived shortage of dental hygienists.
