RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) often develop pulmonary hypertension but frequently fail to respond to vasodilator therapy, for instance because of an altered pulmonary vasoreactivity. Investigating such alterations in vivo is impossible. We hypothesised that these alterations are also present in fetoplacental vessels, since both vasculatures are exposed to the same circulating factors (e.g. endothelin-1) and respond similarly to certain stimuli (e.g. hypoxia). As proof-of-concept, we compared fetoplacental vasoreactivity between healthy and CDH-affected placentas. METHODS: Fetoplacental vascular function of healthy and antenatally diagnosed left-sided CDH fetuses was assessed by wire myography. Placental expression of enzymes and receptors involved in the altered vasoreactive pathways was measured using quantitative PCR. RESULTS: CDH arteries (n = 6) constricted more strongly to thromboxane A2 agonist U46619 (p < 0.001) and dilated less to bradykinin (p = 0.01) and nitric oxide (NO)-donor sodium nitroprusside (p = 0.04) than healthy arteries (n = 8). Vasodilation to prostacyclin analogue iloprost and adenylate cyclase stimulator forskolin, and vasoconstriction to endothelin-1 were not different between both groups. Angiotensin II did not induce vasoconstriction. Phosphodiesterase inhibitors sildenafil and milrinone did not affect responses to sodium nitroprusside, forskolin, or U46619. The mRNA expression of guanylate cyclase 1 soluble subunit alpha 1 (p = 0.003) and protein kinase cyclic guanine monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent 1 (p = 0.02) were reduced in CDH versus healthy placentas. DISCUSSION: The identified changes in the thromboxane and NO-cGMP pathways in the fetoplacental vasculature correspond with currently described alterations in the pulmonary vasculature in CDH. Therefore, fetoplacental arteries may provide an opportunity to predict pulmonary therapeutic responses in infants with CDH.

RESUMO

The Pechini type polymerizable complex decomposition method is employed to prepare LiTi(2)(PO(4))(3) at 1000 °C in air. High energy ball milling followed by carbon coating by the glucose-method yielded C-coated nano-LiTi(2)(PO(4))(3) (LTP) with a crystallite size of 80(±5) nm. The phase is characterized by X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement, thermogravimetry, SEM, HR-TEM and Raman spectra. Lithium cycling properties of LTP show that 1.75 moles of Li (~121 mA h g(-1) at 15 mA g(-1) current) per formula unit can be reversibly cycled between 2 and 3.4 V vs. Li with 83% capacity retention after 70 cycles. Cyclic voltammograms (CV) reveal the two-phase reaction mechanism during Li insertion/extraction. A hybrid electrochemical supercapacitor (HEC) with LTP as negative electrode and activated carbon (AC) as positive electrode in non-aqueous electrolyte is studied by CV at various scan rates and by galvanostatic cycling at various current rates up to 1000 cycles in the range 0-3 V. Results show that the HEC delivers a maximum energy density of 14 W h kg(-1) and a power density of 180 W kg(-1).

RESUMO

In many applications of quantum information science, high-dimensional entanglement is needed. Quantum teleportation is used for transferring information from one place to another using Einstein-Podolsk-Rosen pairs (EPR) and two classical bits of communication in a channel. Since we cannot produce multiple copies of an unknown state for amplification, we will generate multiple EPR pairs. However, after the distribution of the EPR pairs, they will have decreased fidelity with the ideal EPR state. So, to maintain the quantum states and maximize the quantification of the entanglement without losing the strength of the states, we propose to denoise the channel for a few types of noise. We created a random noise source and filtered out the irrelevant information without affecting the relevant information encoded in the quantum states. The proposed model is used for successful denoising of GHZ states from spin flips and bit flip errors. Much of the research work is not carried out by using machine-language-based neural networks for noise-reduction in quantum channels. In this paper, we propose a denoiser called quantum denoiser CNQD, which uses a feedforward convolution neural network model. We tuned our model with highly entangled GHZ states with zero phases and phase between [0, ∏] mixed with different kinds of noise. Finally, the proposed model can be used for optimal quantum communication via noisy quantum channels using GHZ states.

RESUMO

Co/Co3O4 nanocomposite particles of various morphologies were synthesized by the reverse micelle technique. Equiaxed, rod and faceted crystals with rectangular, pentagonal and hexagonal cross sections were observed. Annealing resulted in the formation of a composite of cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and fcc cobalt (Co). Removal of boron residues from the final product was established by surface characterization. Magnetic moment of these nanocomposite particles is relevant to magnetic field processing.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The Q-switched Nd: YAG (QSNY) laser is considered the standard device of choice for laser tattoo removal. Newer concepts such as R0 , R20 methods aided in faster clearance of tattoos. The Kerby-Desai scale [KD scale] has been proposed to predict the approximate number of sessions needed for tattoo clearance. OBJECTIVE: To access the efficacy of R0 technique for tattoo removal in skin types IV to VITo evaluate the Kerby-Desai scale and its correlation to the number of sessions actually required for tattoo clearance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients with single colored amateur were treated using modified R0 technique and the number of sessions were corelated with Kirby Desai scale. RESULTS: We found that R0 method require significantly less sessions than predicted by KD scale. CONCLUSION: Tattoo removal with the R0 technique using PFD allows faster clearing of tattoos and significantly cuts down the total treatment duration needed for tattoo removal.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of the study was to explore the factors causing delay in seeking treatment among adult patients diagnosed with CAAs acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and compare the factors between timely and late treatment seeking groups. METHOD: A total of 93 subjects were included in the study diagnosed with AMI interviewed within 48h of hospitalization. Data were collected from onset of symptoms to arrival at hospital on demography, clinical profile, clinical factors, cognitive factors and social support factors. Subjects were categorized in two study groups i.e. timely treatment seeking group (<120min from onset of symptoms) and delayed treatment seeking group (>120min from onset of symptoms). RESULTS: The minimum and maximum time took by subjects to seek treatment was 10 and 5450min, respectively. The mean pain score of subjects who sought delayed treatment (2.2619) is less than those who sought timely treatment (3.3725). The mean knowledge score (12.2754), mean symptom perception (3.6667), mean perceived seriousness (4.7647) is more in subjects who sought timely treatment than those who sought delayed treatment (5.7381), (1.3095), (1.8333) respectively. The mean family support score (57.4492), mean non-family support score (24.902), mean social support score (48.3002) is more in timely treatment group than in delayed treatment seeking group (42.6829), (4.7619), (29.2138) respectively. CONCLUSION: Decreased pain, knowledge about AMI, symptom perception, perceived seriousness respectively and inadequate family & non-family support i.e. social support were the factors related to treatment seeking delay among adults diagnosed with AMI.

RESUMO

Decolorization of recalcitrant dyes by an indigenous strain of white rot fungus isolated from bark of dead tree, WR-1 identified as Ganoderma sp. was investigated. The fermentation medium was optimized using a combination of one factor at a time and orthogonal array method. Maximum decolorization (96%) of 100 ppm amaranth was achieved in 8 h with optimized medium containing 2% starch and 0.125% yeast extract. Rate of dye decolorization by the indigenous isolate Ganoderma sp. WR-1 was very high compared to the most widely used strains of Trametes versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The broad-spectrum decolorization efficiency of the isolate was assessed using chemically different dyes. The isolate was further evaluated for the decolorization of industrial effluent. Complete decolorization was achieved in 12 days.

RESUMO

Laccase production by solid-state fermentation (SSF) using an indigenously isolated white rot basidiomycete Ganoderma sp. was studied. Among the various agricultural wastes tested, wheat bran was found to be the best substrate for laccase production. Solid-state fermentation parameters such as optimum substrate, initial moisture content, and inoculum size were optimized using the one-factor-at-a-time method. A maximum laccase yield of 2,400 U/g dry substrate (U/gds) was obtained using wheat bran as substrate with 70% initial moisture content at 25 degrees C and the seven agar plugs as the inoculum. Further enhancement in laccase production was achieved by supplementing the solid-state medium with additional carbon and nitrogen source such as starch and yeast extract. This medium was optimized by response surface methodology, and a fourfold increase in laccase activity (10,050 U/g dry substrate) was achieved. Thus, the indigenous isolate seems to be a potential laccase producer using SSF. The process also promises economic utilization and value addition of agro-residues.

RESUMO

A new hexacyclic pyridoacridine alkaloid, nordehydrocyclodercitin (1), from an ascidian, Aplidium sp., cf. Aplidium cratiferum collected at Arab Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Australia is reported. Nordehydrocyclodercitin is structurally related to stellettamine (2) and cyclodercitin (3), which are sponge metabolites, and cycloshermilamine D (4) which was isolated from the marine tunicate Cystodytes violatinctus. The structure of nordehydrocyclodercitin was determined by interpretation of spectroscopic data, particularly those obtained from HMBC correlations, and by comparison with reported data for known related pyridoacridine alkaloids.

RESUMO

This study confirms the fact that in different respiratory disorders, the status of plasma oxidants and antioxidants shifts from normal. The status of oxidants in plasma as represented by malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased significantly in the conditions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, bronchiectasis and bronchial asthma. The two vitamin antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E showed decreased levels than in controls. In patients with COPD the endogenous antioxidant viz. reduced glutathione (GSH) estimated from whole blood was comparable to that of control group, whereas in patients with emphysema, bronchiectasis and bronchial asthma, GSH concentration was increased to that of control group. The activity of enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly decreased in all study groups. Pulmonary function tests were found to have no correlation with MDA and antioxidants.

RESUMO

The persistence of a previously characterized spumavirus strain (strain SV-522) was investigated utilizing various laboratory media and waters, including Eagle's minimal essential medium (EMEM) plus 0% fetal bovine serum (EMEM-0%), EMEM-2%, EMEM-10%, Chlamydia transport medium (CTM), phosphate-buffered saline, distilled, estuarine, and marine water, human serum, and the germicides, ethyl alcohol (70%) and sodium hypochlorite (10%). Experiments were performed at 4 degrees C and/or 23 degrees C. Infectivity endpoints were determined in stock aliquots upon initiation of testing and then after 3, 5, 7, and 10 days. The virus was reisolated from all diluents after 5 days at 23 degrees C and in EMEM-10% after 7 days. The virus was detected in CTM, EMEM-2%, EMEM-10%, and estuarine and marine waters after 7 days at 4 degrees C. Differences in the persistence of the virus may be ascribed to temperature and organic load. Water ionic strengths (e.g., estuarine vs. marine water) had no effect on modifying persistence of viral particles. Infectivity of spumavirus was undetectable after 30 s in 70% ethanol or 10% sodium hypochlorite. After 30 min at 23 degrees C, spumavirus infectivity in normal but not heat-inactivated human serum increased by almost 100-fold. Persistence of infectivity of primate spumavirus after 7 days in media and waters, and the agent's infectious potential in the human host, emphasize a need for cautious recognition during the manipulation of primate cells/organs and in the handling of primates themselves.

RESUMO

The effect of pranayama a controlled breathing practice, on exercise tests was studied in athletes in two phases; sub-maximal and maximal exercise tests. At the end of phase I (one year) both the groups (control and experimental) achieved significantly higher work rate and reduction in oxygen consumption per unit work. There was a significant reduction in blood lactate and an increase in P/L ratio in the experimental group, at rest. At the end of phase II (two years), the oxygen consumption per unit work was found to be significantly reduced and the work rate significantly increased in the experimental group. Blood lactate decreased significantly at rest in the experimental group only. Pyruvate and pyruvate-lactate ratio increased significantly in both the groups after exercise and at rest in the experimental group. The results in both phases showed that the subjects who practised pranayama could achieve higher work rates with reduced oxygen consumption per unit work and without increase in blood lactate levels. The blood lactate levels were significantly low at rest.

RESUMO

Twelve normal healthy volunteers (6 males and 6 females) undergoing yoga training for 90 days were studied for the effect of yoga on exercise tolerance. Their ages ranged from 18 to 28 years. The volunteers were taught only Pranayama for the first 20 days and later on yogic asanas were added. Sub-maximal exercise tolerance test was done on a motorized treadmill by using Balke's modified protocol, initially, after 20 days (Phase-I) and after 90 days of yoga training (Phase-II). Pyruvate and lactate in venous blood and blood gases in capillary blood were estimated immediately before and after the exercise. Minute ventilation and oxygen consumption were estimated before and during the test. Post exercise blood lactate was elevated significantly during initial and Phase-I, but not in Phase-II. There was significant reduction of minute ventilation and oxygen consumption only in males in Phase-I and II at the time when the volunteers reached their 80% of the predicted heart rate. Female volunteers were able to go to higher loads of exercise in Phase-I and II.

RESUMO

We report the formation and extraordinary Li-storage properties of TiO2 hollow nanofibers by co-axial electrospinning in both the half-cell and full-cell configurations. Li-insertion properties are first evaluated as anodes in the half-cell configuration (Li/TiO2 hollow nanofibers) and we found that reversible insertion of ~0.45 moles is feasible at a current density of 100 mA g(-1). The half-cell displayed a good cyclability and retained 84% of its initial reversible capacity after 300 galvanostatic cycles. The full-cell is fabricated with a commercially available olivine phase LiFePO4 cathode under optimized mass loading. The LiFePO4/TiO2 hollow nanofiber cell delivered a reversible capacity of 103 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) with an operating potential of ~1.4 V. Excellent cyclability is noted for the full-cell configuration, irrespective of the applied current densities, and it retained 88% of reversible capacity after 300 cycles in ambient conditions at a current density of 100 mA g(-1).

RESUMO

Conditions like hypertension, atherosclerosis and diabetes are known to be the result of endothelial dysfunction which could begin early in the life of an individual. The markers of endothelial dysfunction studied in the present work are plasma hemoglobin, serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and plasma nitrite and nitrate. We studied the onset of endothelial dysfunction with increase in age as well as in disease condition like newly detected hypertensives and of hypertensive diabetic patients. The mean plasma hemoglobin and hsCRP values were found to increase with age. hsCRP and plasma hemoglobin levels were significantly higher in patient groups as compared to aged-matched controls. On the other hand nitrate and nitrite was significantly higher in patients who suffered from both diabetes and hypertension together and nitrate values were significantly lower in patients who suffered from hypertensive alone. Plasma hemoglobin and hsCRP are associated with endothelial dysfunction and increases both with age as well as in disease condition.
