RESUMO

We present a monolithic InP-based photonic integrated circuit (PIC) consisting of a widely tunable laser master oscillator feeding an array of integrated semiconductor optical amplifiers that are interferometrically combined on-chip in a single-mode waveguide. We demonstrate a stable and efficient on-chip coherent beam combination and obtain up to 240 mW average power from the monolithic PIC, with 30-50 kHz Schawlow-Townes linewidths and >180 mW average power across the extended C-band. We also explored hybrid integration of the InP-based laser and amplifier array PIC with a high quality factor silicon nitride microring resonator. We observe lasing based on gain from the interferometrically combined amplifier array in an external cavity formed via feedback from the silicon nitride microresonator chip; this configuration results in narrowing of the Schawlow-Townes linewidth to ∼3 kHz with 37.9 mW average power at the SiN output facet. This work demonstrates a new approach toward high power, narrow linewidth sources that can be integrated with on-chip single-mode waveguide platforms for potential applications in nonlinear integrated photonics.

RESUMO

We demonstrate an innovative variable-focus flat liquid-crystal diffractive lens (LCDL) with 95% diffraction efficiency and millisecond switching times using a +/-2.4 V ac input. This lens is based on the electrical modulation of a 3 mum layer of nematic liquid-crystal sandwiched between a Fresnel zone electrode structure and a reference substrate. Each zone is divided into 12 subzones to digitize the phase profiles and define the phase wrapping points. The focusing power can rapidly be switched by electrically changing the number of subzones and re-establishing the wrapping points. Potential applications include zooms with no moving parts and autofocus lenses for compact imaging devices.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a compact optical phoroptor consisting of adjustable astigmatic and defocus lenses. The lenses are fluidically controlled and allow for an arbitrary refractive error to be corrected without mechanically moving lenses. Shack-Hartmann measurements were used to characterize the optical properties of the individual lenses. The lenses were then assembled into the phoropter and controlled with three separate fluid controls. The phoroptor was verified by correcting the vision of a model eye with an induced refraction error.

RESUMO

Fluidic lenses have been developed for ophthalmic applications with continuously varying optical powers for second order Zernike modes. Continuously varying corrections for both myopic and hyperopic defocus have been demonstrated over a range of three diopters using a fluidic lens with a circular retaining aperture. Likewise, a six diopter range of astigmatism has been continuously corrected using fluidic lenses with rectangular apertures. Imaging results have been characterized using a model eye.

RESUMO

Mammalian cell attachment studies were conducted on a variety of common microchip surfaces for potential use in cell based biosensors. COS-7 cell attachment to Au, Pt or ITO, per unit area was greater than to SiO(2) surfaces. The number of cells that would attach was essentially maximized 3 h after cell seeding. HL-1 cells attached more readily to surfaces precoated with fibronectin, but by 3 h equivalent number of cells had attached independent of fibronectin precoating. Inclusion of serum in media during the initial period of attachment decreased the number of COS-7 cells attached to SiO(2) surfaces, but no dependence on serum was seen for ITO surfaces. The number of cells attached per unit area varied with the composition of the surface. However, no differences were observed in the percentage of cells transfected with a green fluorescent protein gene, or in the level of reporter gene expression over the population of transfected cells on ITO, SiO(2), Pt, Ag, or Au surfaces. Similar FACS analysis of transfected Hep G2 cells revealed lower levels of both transfection efficiency and levels of GFP fluorescence. Hep G2 cells plated on Ag did not remain attached for analysis, but there were no significant differences between tissue culture plastic and the other biosensor surfaces in the percentage of cells transfected. This suggests that, in general, cells will attach to the various conducting and nonconducting biosensor surfaces studied and will provide comparable data in reporter gene expression assays.

RESUMO

We have developed a custom analog CMOS circuit to perform the signal processing for an optical coherence tomography imaging system. The circuit is realized in a 1.5 microm low-noise analog CMOS technology. The circuitry extracts the Doppler frequency from the signal and electrically mixes this with the original signal to provide a filtered A-scan. The circuitry was used to produce a two-dimensional image of an onion.

RESUMO

We report on two fluidic lenses that have been developed for ophthalmic applications. The lenses use a circular aperture to demonstrate optical powers between -20 and +20 D and a rectangular aperture to demonstrate astigmatism with values ranging from 0 to 8 D. Measurements of image quality were made with the fluidic lens using a model eye. Both lenses were variable and controllable by adjusting the fluid volume of the lens. To the best of our knowledge this is the first demonstration of a continuously variable lens for control of astigmatism.

A CMOS circuit was designed and fabricated for optical coherence tomography (OCT) signal detection and processing. The circuit includes a photoreceiver, differential gain stage and lock-in amplifier based demodulator. The photoreceiver consists of a CMOS photodetector and low noise differential transimpedance amplifier which converts the optical interference signal into a voltage. The differential gain stage further amplifies the signal. The in-phase and quadrature channels of the lock-in amplifier each include an analog mixer and switched-capacitor low-pass filter with an external mixer reference signal. The interferogram envelope and phase can be extracted with this configuration, enabling Doppler OCT measurements. A sensitivity of -80 dB is achieved with faithful reproduction of the interferometric signal envelope. A sample image of finger tip is presented.

RESUMO

Presbyopia is an age-related loss of accommodation of the human eye that manifests itself as inability to shift focus from distant to near objects. Assuming no refractive error, presbyopes have clear vision of distant objects; they require reading glasses for viewing near objects. Area-divided bifocal lenses are one example of a treatment for this problem. However, the field of view is limited in such eyeglasses, requiring the user to gaze down to accomplish near-vision tasks and in some cases causing dizziness and discomfort. Here, we report on previously undescribed switchable, flat, liquid-crystal diffractive lenses that can adaptively change their focusing power. The operation of these spectacle lenses is based on electrical control of the refractive index of a 5-mum-thick layer of nematic liquid crystal using a circular array of photolithographically defined transparent electrodes. It operates with high transmission, low voltage (<2 Vrms), fast response (<1 sec), diffraction efficiency > 90%, small aberrations, and a power-failure-safe configuration. These results represent significant advance in state-of-the-art liquid-crystal diffractive lenses for vision care and other applications. They have the potential of revolutionizing the field of presbyopia correction when combined with automatic adjustable focusing power.
