RESUMO

The present cross-sectional serosurvey constitutes the first effort to describe the varicella zoster virus (VZV) seroepidemiology in Serbia. An age-stratified serum bank of 3570 residual samples collected between 2015 and 2016 in each of the seven districts of the Vojvodina Province was tested for IgG anti-VZV antibodies with an enzyme immunoassay. Results were standardised into common units according to the European Sero-Epidemiology Network (ESEN2) methodology. Univariable and multivariable analyses were used to examine the relationships between standardised anti-VZV positivity or logarithmically transformed antibody titres and demographic features of study subjects. Seropositivity (85% overall) increased with age, in parallel with geometric mean titres. By the time of school entry, 68% of children were immune. The slower subsequent acquisition of immunity leaves epidemiologically relevant proportions of adolescents (7%), young adults (6%) and especially females of reproductive age (6%) prone to more severe forms of varicella. In the ongoing pre-vaccine era, natural infection provides a high level of collective immunity, with the highest VZV transmission in children of preschool age. The detected gaps in VZV immunity of the Serbian population support the adoption of the official recommendations for varicella immunisation of non-immune adolescents and young adults, including non-pregnant women of childbearing age.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Multimarker quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) represents an effective method for detecting circulating tumour cells in the peripheral blood of patients with melanoma. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the phenotype of circulating melanoma cells represents a useful indicator of disease stage, recurrence and treatment efficacy. METHODS: Peripheral blood was collected from 230 patients with melanoma and 152 healthy controls over a period of 3years and 9months. Clinical data and blood samples were collected from patients with primary melanoma (early stages, 0-II, n=154) and metastatic melanoma (late stages, III-IV, n=76). Each specimen was examined by qRT-PCR analysis for the expression of five markers: MLANA, ABCB5, TGFß2, PAX3d and MCAM. RESULTS: In total, 212 of the patients with melanoma (92%) expressed markers in their peripheral blood. Two markers, MLANA and ABCB5, had the greatest prognostic value, and were identified as statistically significant among patients who experienced disease recurrence within our study period, being expressed in 45% (MLANA) and 49% (ABCB5) of patients with recurrence (P=0·001 and P=0·031, respectively). For patients administered nonsurgical treatments, MCAM expression correlated with poor treatment outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Circulating tumour cells were detectable at all stages of disease and long after surgical treatment, even when patients were considered disease free. Specifically, expression of ABCB5 and MLANA had significant prognostic value in inferring disease recurrence, while MCAM expression was associated with poor patient outcome after treatment, confirming multimarker qRT-PCR as a potential technique for monitoring disease status.

RESUMO

From 16 January to 30 April 2012, a total of 119 cases of mumps were notified in Novi Sad, Serbia. Of these cases, 89 (75%), were among students. The average age of cases was 22 years-old (range 3-37). The outbreak is still ongoing in Novi Sad and is spreading to other parts of the Vojvodina province. As of 30 April, 209 cases have been notified in the province among those 119 from Novi Sad.

RESUMO

From 27 January to 10 February 2012, a total of 43 cases of Q fever were notified in the village of Nocaj, Srem county, Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Republic of Serbia. Q fever was laboratory confirmed in 37 notified cases. Alhough, the outbreak is considered over, the outbreak investigation is still ongoing in order to identify aetiologic factors relevant for this outbreak.

RESUMO

Accreditation in pathology and neuropathology in Germany is based on the requirements of the DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020 standard, which defines general requirements for the bodies performing inspections. In Germany, the national accreditation body of the Federal Republic of Germany (DAkkS) assumes the official task of accreditation. Evaluation in this area is based on a comprehensive assessment by board-certified pathologists (inspection) and is focused on correct diagnosis. The requirement of the DIN EN ISO 15189 standard on quality and competence in medical laboratories is taken into account. In Germany, more than 100 institutes of pathology and neuropathology have successfully performed the accreditation process. Interest in accreditation has been significantly growing in recent months, especially due to changes in the European law with the "Verordnung EO 2017/746 des Europäischen Parlaments und des Rates vom 05. April 2017 über Invitro-Diagnostica".However, accreditation is a demanding process that requires very good preparation. Necessary resources for accreditation should be secured before starting the process. Important framework conditions and requirements, but also some challenges that can arise during the accreditation process, are summarized in this article.

RESUMO

Preparedness planning for two large mass gatherings events were considered in Serbia in the context of pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009. Planning included approaches to prevention, detection and response in order to mitigate the situation at this early stage of the epidemic in Serbia. Cases of influenza A(H1N1)v were identified nationally immediately prior to the mass gatherings but also identified in association with both events, as expected in the context of the pandemic situation. This article describes the experiences of planning and the epidemiological situation during the period of the mass gathering events.

RESUMO

The muscular dystrophy is a progressive genetically determined disease of skeletal muscles. Thanks to the development of molecular genetics there have been identified genes responsible for synthesis of the corresponding proteins of the muscular membrane, whose deficiency causes certain types of muscular dystrophy. Thus, recently has been reported that deficiency of sarcoglycan (alpha, beta, gamma and sigma) is responsible for the appearance of four different types of autosomal recessive limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (2D, 2E, 2C, 2F), and that the lack of merosin is the cause of serious merosin deficiency, of congenital muscular dystrophy. The paper presents the nature, function and importance of the main components of sarcolemma, as well as the basic characteristics of muscular dystrophies caused by their deficiency. It is important to know the genetic product whose deficiency is responsible for certain types of muscular dystrophy as only by confirming their deficiency in the biopsy material the precise diagnosis can be established even without molecular-genetic analyses. This is of great importance for accurate genetic advising.
