RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In schizophrenia patients the lateral ventricle enlargement has mostly been reported in relationship with smaller cortical and/or subcortical brain volumes; and it has been observed that ventricular system growth may be a consequence of the smaller caudate nucleus volume. Bicaudate parameters have been used in the Alzheimer dementia and Huntington's chorea diagnosing in order to evaluate brain changes and the enlargement of the lateral ventricles. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study has been carried out on 140 patients out of which 70 patients (30 men and 40 women) who met the ICD 10 criteria for schizophrenia and 70 healthy controls (30 men and 40 women) matched on sex and age with the studied group. All of them underwent direct caudatometry and volume computation based on MRI scans. RESULTS: Except for the bicorporal line, for all the parameters were obtained the statistically highly significant differences between the examined and control groups. Significant correlation was established for the majority of bicaudate parameters and volumes of the caudate nuclei and lateral ventricles. DISCUSSION: Enlargement of the lateral ventricles is one of the most frequent MRI finding in schizophrenia patients. Ventricles are enlarging gradually and frontal horns are more affected than other parts. The increased volumes of the caudate nuclei signalized that ventricular enlargement is not the consequence of the caudate atrophy. CONCLUSION: Bicaudate parameters are reliable parameters for the quick orientation in order to assess the enlarged ventricles in schizophrenia patients.

RESUMO

This paper describes the life and work of Dr. Atanasije Puljo (1878-1944). He was a volunteer in the Balkan wars, an active participant in the First World War; he was the first who noted the importance of team-work of a dentist and a surgeon in the care of jaw and facial injuries. He established primacy in this field, as he came up with this brilliant idea three years before other colleagues. His method of treatment of the upper jaw neglected fractures, called the Balkan method, was recognized worldwide. Dr. Puljo is the pioneer of dental radiology in Serbia, founder of the Odontology Clinic of the Medical Faculty and main supporter of the establishment of the School of Dentistry. Merits of Dr. Atanasije Puljo, medical practitioner with a broad knowledge in different fields, remain within the academic institution that was founded by this pioneer of dentistry in Serbia.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In the last decades psychiatric patients' quality of life attracts great attention of researchers. Improving the quality of life of schizophrenic patients is increasingly becoming an imperative in pharmacological therapy. OBJECTIVE: Analysis of certain aspects of quality of life in patients with schizophrenia treated with depot formulations of a typical antipsychotic (haloperidol) and injection preparation of a long-acting atypical antipsychotic (risperidone). METHODS: Research was conducted as a cross-sectional study that included 60 patients of both genders. Examinees diagnosed with schizophrenia (ICD-10, F20.0-F20.9) were divided into two groups: the group of patients that received haloperidol depot (n = 30) and the group of patients that received injection preparation of long-acting risperidone (n = 30). In order to assess the quality of life, social functioning scale (SFS), satisfaction with life scale (SWLS), and short version of World Health Organization quality of life scale (WHO-QoL-Brief) were applied. RESULTS: Results showed statistically significant differences when it comes to social activity and satisfaction with life in favour of patients treated with injection preparation of long-acting risperidone. Examinees from this group were much more satisfied with themselves, their health and sleep compared to those on haloperidol depot. There was no statistically significant difference found on the quality of life scale. CONCLUSIONS: Applying the scales for the assessment of the quality of life of schizophrenic patients in terms of psychosocial functioning, statistically significant difference between groups was found. Results showed higher scores in the group of patients treated with injection preparation of long-acting risperidone concerning social activities and life satisfaction.
